Staff were lovely and helpful, setting was beautiful, and the accommodation was clean and comfortable! Location is slightly out of the way if you haven’t got a car, as walking on the side of the road is sketchy. But fantastic value for money - would recommend it to everyone on a budget :)

This is a sprawling set of several buildings and smaller cabins. We were in the Begonia building at the end which requires a short walk around one building and down two flights of stairs from the parking lot. The view of Mount Kinabalu from this far building is unobstructed and beautiful. The wifi is only available near the cafe and registration building. The breakfast is included and consisted of fried rice, noodles and white toast with sweet coconut spread. For drinks coffee and tea were available. The rooms are basic and clean same goes for the bathroom which had good water pressure and hot water. The windows are louvered so they don't keep the breeze out. The temperature went down to 16 or 17 degrees C. It was cool but manageable. We were in a ground suite and the footsteps from above of two little girls was quite noticeable. Overall a nice little gem as long as you are ok with a somewhat rustic style.

Old tin room, with nails on the walls. Bad flooring etc etc, all our allergies started living in this old place. I am surprised it is listed as a house, I understand a little bit of wild living but this was plainly bad as seen in picture.
Luckily we could get it changed on the last day, but allergies continued with cat in the restaurant not helping.
The reception was accommodating in facilitating the change, but frankly it should not be listed in hotels.com as a house/room option.
The restaurant menu for breakfast or dinner is the same with no variation, it is good to skip it for now.

Wake up to a magnificent view of Mt Kinabalu just infront of our unit.

They could improve on the water system. The unit we stayed has no hot water and the pressure was very low. I was freezing cold after a cold shower.

Other than that we loved the place and enjoyed our stay.

There were many ants.The condition is like an old kampung house. The DVD player wasnt working and had to get someone to exchange with another DVD player next door. Cats and dogs around the premise, caterwauling until we fed them.The worse part was the presence of something in the room with bunk beds. My son was able to see it and my hubby was disturbed by it.

It is cheaper to book on the spot / call the hotel for advance booking then to book online.
The room doesn't support weak WIFI...and there was no TV.
Toilet door was broken when we got in.
Breakfast was very bad, don't put too much hope on it

Don't book the cheapest room

We booked the cheapest room at the lodge and it was a very small room with concrete floors, a low ceiling, gaps in the walls and no mosquito net. I would suggest paying more for a better room. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the food was fairly good but nothing to write home about.

Superb location. Near to Kinabalu Park Enterance. Breathtaking view. Very cold at night. One thing that remains a problem and will always be a problem for all guest, the thin wall. If you talk loud, it can be heard by other guess at other room.

I was given the impression, based on the price I have paid on this place (for my room), there would be no issues at all.

Unfortunately, in a terrible way, this place has done worse. I have been travelling for a few years. I have been staying in several different hotels and accommodations like Sabah, Sarawak, Penang, KL, Perak and Pahang. All of them have their own goods and bads but none of them have ever disappointed me except this Mile 36 Lodge.

I don't know or I am not sure, are this place really wanted to be in the business of leisure or accommodation? Are those guys in this place really wanted to serve their guest with their inadequate amenities? No iron for my shirt? Not enough hot water? Not enough parking? Wifi, internet? Too slow even my grandma can run faster than their internet.

Congratulation Mile 36 Lodge, you have won, in the first place, in my own categories, The Worst Expedia Experience of 2019.

I am even sorry for Expedia themselves for having this place in their system. You should get rid of this place ASAP from your booking system.

I had Chin Bungalow during my stay that could accomodate 9 people and 1 kid. From our room we can see the view of Mount Kinabalu and the Bungalow has everything, except towel.

Nice environment for family holidays

The final nite I couldnt sleep due to group of youth having bbq infront of my room and making noice till late nite. Please also indicate the food provided is halal or otherwise. I also lost a WD watch but was called otw back saying that the watch was found under my bed (??)..Anyway tks for being honest. Overall my family and I found the 36 lodge was very nice and exclusive and we will definately come back.

A budget stay with decent breakfast

What you see in the pics is what you gonna get. Dont expect too much on the budget room. The rooms are absolutely no sound proof so you can absolutely hear everything from upstairs esp when theres kids playing, running & jumping around. For the water heater, get shower early before other rooms finished the water & itll take some time for the water heater to boil some more. The breakfast is pretty decent, the noodles are usually good, but the fried rice kinda dry. But again, its pretty worth the price since its absolutely hard to find a much cheaper homestay around tht area with free breakfast

The picture of the room is misleading

I was expecting a room like what they showed in the pictures but instead I was given a room which is quite slanted, dark, and has cockroaches. To be fair, it is situated near a forest (hence the cockroaches maybe) but they could just be more honest with the condition of their room.

Bad Experience

Came with my family, got the room for 4 and we couldn't wait to get out of our room.
The place is aged, just repainted without any upgrade on basic facilities (didn't even have a fan or any ventilation, including the toilet so imagine the smell after you have used it). Bathroom and sink look like they have been there since the 60's. Also, there was a gigantic spider under the eaves right outside of our room.
Staff gave us a kettle that has the words \"Don't give to guest, won't stop after boiling\" written on it, which we found out to be true.
The room door has no latch as well.
Worst of all, I found a COOKED fly in my breakfast after I was almost done!
Only the beds are satisfactory. Avoid if possible, there are better options out there I am sure.

A cozy little lodge in the mountains

Mile 36 Lodge is about a 20min walk from Kinabalu Park. Walking around here is a good way to get acclimated to the higher elevation, especially if you plan to do more hikes in Kinabalu Park or even climb Mt. Kinabalu. Mile 36’s location is excellent, in a beautiful & peaceful setting, where you can get a view of Mt. Kinabalu (when not covered in clouds) from its open garden & grounds. For 3 nights, I stayed in a Budget Twin Room, which was actually a separate cabin/hut on its own & several steps away from the other lodges. It has its own bathroom that is attached to the bedroom…“attached” meaning that I still had to go outside to get to it. It’s not a problem as it’s still covered & just next door, but it’s not as convenient or comfortable when you still have to go outside in the middle of the night when it’s cold or raining and there are bugs or insects flying nearby, which are attracted to the lights :-). There is a hot water shower, but the water isn’t really hot or warm, so be prepared esp. if you plan to shower at night after a long day of hiking in Kinabalu Park. So you definitely get a mountain feel when you stay here, as if you’re secluded, so this is a good place to stay & a good experience overall. At night, all you hear are the insects or the heavy rain. They have an onsite restaurant that is open for breakfast & dinner only. Breakfast is included in the room rate. For lunch, you can walk about 10min to a nearby lodge/restaurant or take a 10min taxi to Kundasang.

Just for the night

I have read reviews on this place before I made my reservation. I decided to try it out. I had a family suite which included 2 rooms and a living area. Yes, it is spacious enough and the view is okay. My mum likes the garden view. However, the rooms are just too close to each other that we can clearly hear what others were talking about from where we stayed. Or may be because our rooms are just above the general dining area? I would recommend getting the bungalow if you're coming with your family.

The first thing I entered the room is to check on the washrooms. I was met by an unconscious cockroach. It is still acceptable, I guess. Then the heater, we're lucky that it was working well. It just needed some time to heat up.

When I thought I can finally settle down and rest, water dripped from the ceiling. It rained quite heavily on that day. Fortunately, the maintenance team was very helpful and efficient. They came to fix it after I informed the receptionist. By the way, there are games that you can borrow for free at the reception hut.

With the package, we're provided with breakfast. It was okay, just that may be they can try to keep the food warm and add more varieties to the selection of food.

Overall, the staff are friendly and helpful. But they really need to buck up to provide better service,go into details. And the place really need some touch up to make it shines.

My room was in the ground floor, just next to the small parking area. Can hear people/car come & go. Also,due to the thin floor board, i can hear guests on the upper floor walking, talking/laughing, flushing the toilet. Can't sleep throughout the night.

Peaceful \"kampung style\" to stay. Far from any groceries and cafe unless you have your own a transportation. The only one cafe available nearby only open base on scheduled. Buy your own snakes at nearest town before you come and staying here.

It's good for the price you pay and it's really close to the Kinabalu Park entrance and not too far from Kundansang. I had a problem with the shower, it wasn't delivering water that is hot enough. I complained but nothing was done about it.

I have rented the family room (Chin House) for RM420 per night. It is not worth it with the value paid. Towel is not supplied and you have to rent towels at RM5 per piece. The water supply is very bad. The water is too cold and the hot water supply was bad...when there is hot water running, it was too hot that it can burnt you skin. In the morning, the water was very cold like ice and no hot water running.
Note: Don't rent the family house. I think its better to rent the several small lodge if you have a big family.

We called many times for the staffs to repair for the water heater as Kundasang weather is very cold and we need to use hot/warm water to take bath. They just procrastinate. After that when i asked them where is their boss, they just come and repair. After repaired, the water still freezing cold.

Room unfit for occupation

The quad room facing garden given was not fit for occupation due to 4 reasons:
1) the toilet doors were just covering 2/3 of the toilet door frame. Hence we could smell the foul odour the moment we entered our room.

2) there was no fan nor aircond. Hence our room was poorly ventilated.

3) there was sewage water dripping from the ceiling from the bathroom upstairs. We had to move out that very night, as they could not offer an alternative accommodation.

4) also the room given was next to the workers' quarters.

Pleasant family trip to Kundasang

Stayed for one night with 2A, 4C. Booked for Union room but was accidentally cancelled by the Lodge. Replaced with Quadruple room (got bunkbed - quite unique) with same price with added sofa bed but breakfast was not added. Room no TV, hot water not reliable, parking was limited. However, the facilities for loan/borrowing were good eg. board games, magazines, props for photography. A bit noisy when upper room was occupied (foot steps, water drainage). Staffs were friendly.

36 Mile lodge was only a 15 minute walk to Mt Kinabalu Nation Park which was perfect. The Lodge is in a beautiful location and the onsite restaurant was fine. I stayed in the single room for 2 nights which was clean and spacious however I found it to be quite noisy on the first night from the room above though I would stay here again.

Quiet getaway

The lodge is easy to find. However it is located some distance from the main road, allowing its guests some much needed privacy. The place we stay was a triple room, very comfy beds with clean sheets. Hot water and towels are provided. Receptionist was awesome, they waited for us despite us checking in late due to the rain. The place had beautiful flowers all over, friendly doggies. However my muslim friends had some difficulty praying as there's no kiblat. We managed with our phones compasses. Wifi signal was strong. All in all an awesome stay. Thanks Mike 36 lodge! :-)

Relaxing, Quiet Stay near the Mountain

Great, relaxing 2-night stay. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was good, we told them in advance that we're vegetarian, and they always made sure we had lots to eat.
We stayed in the building farthest from the main road, which meant it was very quiet and we had a stunning view of Mt Kinabalu from our private balcony.
Lots of reviews complained about the water - we didn't have a problem. Just turn it on some time before you want to have a hot shower, take in the view, no problem.
Can't beat the price, and I would definitely stay here again!
