The staff was friendly and courteous, but the hotel was in bad need of an update. Stained carpets in the hallways and rooms (we had 3), cracked and stained sinks in the rooms, and scuffs on the walls. The rooms were extremely cramped and it was impossible to do anything without being on top of each other with two people in a room. Just barely enough space for a single person.

The onsen was the hotel's saving grace. It was very nice and well-maintained. We stayed at the Dormy Inn at Asahikawa as well, and that location was far and away better in every way. Clean, more spacious, and felt good to be there. I would not stay at the Otaru location again.

The staff and amenities were awesome. I booked it mainly for the onsen and it did not disappoint. They also had free washers for laundry. You had to pay to dry the clothes but 20 minutes for ¥100 was very affordable. I would definitely stay here again.

I had just finished saying to my wife that I wish we had Dormy Inns back in Canada, as it was my favourite hotel chain. We stayed at Morioka and Aomori and both properties were exceptional value for the price. Otaru, however, was incredibly dated and grimy; torn and damaged furniture right in the lobby with exposed insulation and significant wear ad tear, rooms incredibly dated and old, walls scuffed and holes in the basement and lobby, and really scuzzy rooms; kind of like a room above a crappy bar. It was also the most expensive off the 3 Dormy rooms we had. Management of this location needs to pull up their socks, invest in their property (it was very busy, so clearly there's revenue to do upgrades) too bad, as it tainted an otherwise great Dormy experience.

Run down. Two of the three leather chairs in the lobby had large holes where you sat. After living in Japan for 4 years and the memories I had (1989-1993), I felt it was intolerable for their usual standards.
High volume of budget travelers and constant activity in the lobby. Our rooms were sadly a disappointment in size and feel; it felt shabby and musty.
Our Japanese friend who accompanied us on this trip actually took our room in exchange as theirs was a corner unit with windows and well light, while ours was similar to the feeling of being in a closet.
Being from Oahu and growing up with an economy dependent on tourism it was a familiar feeling of feeling overwhelmed at certain attractions with large tourist buses and having to wait in long lines for everyday services. With this in mind, the Japanese do use on service is what keeps quaint towns like Otaru vibrant and enjoyable. But we are in search of towns with heart and soul and not overrun with tourists.

I was not prepared to stay in a room with cracked sink, old and dirty carpet and dirty walls. I contacted the front-desk and requested to change the room. I was told that most of the rooms were the same condition. Sure enough, I checked another available room, it was the same. One the positive side, the staff was very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was amazing. It was definitely worth the money if you don't mind a less than desirable room.

It would be a lot more efficient if the staff instead of standing by the check in machine instructing us each step but keying in the required info for us. He didn’t provide us any info about the hotel facilities and the operating hours. I had to look them up.

I frequently booked and stayed in Dormy Inn with breakfast included during past visits to Japan. I booked one night in Dormy Inn Tomakomai and 2 nights in Otaru for this trip. I was sure the I booked rooms inclusive of breakfast because my wife and I like the breakfast but we were told breakfast is not included. Don’t understand what happened. Anyway, we paid for the breakfast in Tomakomai and not eat breakfast in Otaru.

My first impression was of a cheap tourist hotel. Indeed the room was small, a bit Spartan and well worn. However, the public spaces are excellent, in particular the hot springs public bath was great. They have free washing machines including soap (200 yen for dryer), free ramen service in the evening and free coffee in the lobby ( in addition to coffee on the room). Location is good, next to main train station, and a reasonable walk to the local sites.

Great location, but lots of low quality guests

Many of the hotel’s guests are loud groups that’ll chat over others in the public onsen and smoke in supposedly non-smoking rooms (it’s fairly easy to tell since when they do it, the cigarette smell and fume will flood the corridor and get into your room!)

Given the rather large number of rooms in the building, the laundry facilities are a bit too few too (only 3 sets of washer and dryers in each sex’s onsen). The female ones are always fully occupied

The hotel staff were helpful by providing additional air purifiers in our room, though it’s just a shame that the experience was compromised by bad tourists

#1 choice in Otaru!!

Well located hotel right in front of the Otaru train station. Service is best in class. Onsen offers variety of choices including outdoors and indoors. 9 to 11 pm offers free ramen and ice cream. In the morning it offers free yogurt drink and welcome snacks. Little things add up to an unforgettable experience. My wife and daughter enjoy the stay very much. Also, it is 3 minute walk from fish market with lots of fresh seafood options. The whole town with many landmarks, museums, shops and restaurants, this is the ultimate #1 first stop in Hokkaido. We highly recomend this hotel for your stay in Otaru.

The hotel is so convenient directly across from the train station. Easy check in and helpful staff with some English spoken. The room was efficient with walk in shower, but no frills. The hotel is right on two major streets, but still very quiet. A taxi stand is located right in front of the hotel. The housekeeping staff are the stars of the show and took care of us.

Defies expectations

The hotel was clean and comfortable overall. While the building and lobby furnishings felt a bit outdated, and the front desk service could use some improvement. The room was clean and cozy, almost as if I had traveled back in time. What truly made my stay unforgettable was the onsen, the breakfast(kaisen-don), and the complimentary evening snacks(ramen). These three elements were so exceptional that they made up for any shortcomings in other areas.

It had excellent facilities and was a pleasant place to relax (and get clean). The one thing that surprised me was the hugely tattooed gentleman that used the \"no tattoo\" facility.

I am a big fan of Dormy Inn, and I was so looking forward to staying at this hotel in Otaru. All staff are very kind and professional, and I felt very comfortable with their hospitality. I understand the hotel is very popular and it was a high season, and they provided a QR code to help us see if the onsen or dining room is crowded; however, making a line everywhere (even at a public hot bath) made me a little tired. But please don't get me wrong--that hotel service and meals are more than wonderful and I really enjoyed staying there.

I stayed for one night in Dec 2022 and I thought the hotel wifi was working but not. I tried to get help from the front desk and there was one service staff Japanese lady who spoke really fluent English was really helpful and kind she asked to come up to my room to help us resolve the wifi issue! I stayed on the 9th level and when I hung up the phone, she rang my room bell in almost 1 minutes!

The room table/tv setup looked a bit dated, but they served their functions. My room was a little tight space, but I was just sleeping one night so it wasn't a problem. The baths were nice EXCEPT for their posters avout tattoos. I know onsens overall have terrible policies preventing people with Tattoos use baths, but the poster saying it wasn't band was in poor choice. I don't have a tattoo but this poster was so small minded and stereo typing that all tattooed people are thugs and criminals. Hotel needs to review their decor (and policies) to be less discriminating of people.

- Extraordinarily convenient - you walk out of Otaru station and there it is!
- Amazing breakfast buffet - so much food, so much variety, high quality sashimi and other ingredients
- Sizable onsen baths, perfect way to relax after a long trip
- The area is very walkable to shopping districts, the canal, etc, and Otaru station connects you with buses and trains to go anywhere else you need

ロケーションはまさに駅前で非常に便利です。ただ、運河などに観光に行くには少し距離があります。
部屋は木目調で高級感があり、ベッドがとても広くて気持ちがいいです。ハンガーがたくさんあるのも良いです。
大浴場が大きくて、お湯の質も良いです。
もし次回泊まるとすれば確実に選択肢に入れるでしょう。

This time in Otaru, they encouraged self-service check-in machines, and both the late-night soba and breakfast were quite crowded. Overall, it didn’t feel like the same level of hospitality as my previous stay...
