One of the friendliest hotels I’ve ever stayed in. Fabulous staff, friendly locals, good beer & food and free parking right outside the door. To top it all off the breakfast is amazing. I’d stay here again next time I’m travelling this way.

The stairs are a huge problem if anyone has any difficulty in walking or climbing.
Lack of room numbers to point you in the direction of your room. I was confused by the fire door sign on the door and thought i could not enter so spent ages trying to find my room whilst struggling with the stairs until I was refused by a delightful young staff member who carried. my luggage to my room.

Had a lovely overnight stay here. I arrived early as I was attending a wedding and was able to access my room no problem to get ready.
Room has recently been re-furbished and is beautiful.
The staff are very friendly and helpful and the breakfast is good too. I would have no hesitation in returning.

The staff and food were fantastic. The hotel was being refurbished, but we were not informed about it, until we arrived. It involved, quite a convoluted detour around back stairs to get to our room, and those areas were very dusty. On the plus side, they did give a small discount as redress, but I felt it was still very overpriced for the stay.

We were attending a wedding. Things got delayed, and I checked in by phone. The lady said the key would be left on the bar for collection. Later they rang me and said if I hadn't collected the key by 10.30/10.45 they would have gone and we wouldn't have a room. Had to leave Reception early to ensure we had a bed. Room spotlessly clean, although bin not emptied. Stair carpet very dirty and worn, and room smelt of state cigarette smoke. Breakfast I ordered porridge which never arrived and received a fried egg at breakfast rather than the scrambled I requested.

We booked in for one night on our way back from John O' Groats. Our room was upstairs no lift and no offer of help with my suitcase. I have arthritis in both of my hands and wrists. Our room was alright. But it was all a bit jaded. We were provided with enough coffee sachets a milk for 2 cups of coffee, however the kettle had to be plugged in and boiled on the floor because the lead was not long enough to reach any flat surface. Choice of breakfast. I provided my own cereal as they didn't provide a gluten free option. Carpets were all a bit shabby and looked like they needed a good clean. Booked in for evening meal which was excellent and also they had a gluten free menu, so we were very pleased wirh that. We had stayed here a few years ago for several days and noticed how much things had deteriorated. I doubt if will stay there again.

A perfect overnight stay.

I was only looking for an overnight stay on a business trip to Scotland and this fitted the bill perfectly. I was late to check in, but the hotel called me to make sure I was ok and still coming, which I thought was a nice touch.
I had a beer in the (busy) bar before bed, a good breakfast to start the next day, and great hospitality throughout.
No issues at all, and I’d happily recommend it.

Fantastic wee hotel and the staff are all superb. It’s right in the heart of Biggar so an ideal location for the surrounding wedding venues. It definitely feels like a warm family run business that cares about their guests well-being. Breakfast was pre ordered and freshly served after your teas and coffees. My only say would be, plan ahead of your visiting as parking is limited with it being a town square. Will definitely be booking in again!

This was a pleasant overnight stay, the room was lovely and clean. The staff we met were friendly and helpful.
The one thing that was a bit of a shame was no vegetarian option on the breakfast menu other than to exclude meat, it would have been nice to have a vegetarian sausage or even some mushrooms as an option. We would certainly consider staying here again. Location fabulous!

We attended a Christening which was lovely. The food was absolutely gorgeous. Not only at the function, but the party went on so long the dinner was just as nice. Perfect steak.

The room was ok, single room was only available. The only thing i would seriously report back is the kettle. When you boiled it, the kettle handle itself was really hot so i burned my hand when making tea.
We were also asked to pre order breakfast straight after dinner which i am not a fan of, but when arriving at breakfast changes were allowed which i was so happy with.

The hotel obviously really look after locals and the service was outstanding.

What a lovely little find this place was. Just needed one night’s stay to accommodate myself and my dogs, as I was attending a dog show the next day. It’s often difficult to find a place that takes dogs so willingly. Very pet friendly, and accommodating. I had a super room, which was more than adequate. I requested a bigger room (family) as I prefer space and that’s what I got. Huge room with large Double bed. Very comfy looking bunk beds in the corner if needed. Great large bathroom, which was in fact a wet room, so ideal for my dogs to be in, and nice and easy to keep clean and hygiened. Lovely and clean, comfortable, with settee, table etc.
Went for an evening meal, and what a super menu that was, with everything you could want. Very pleasant breakfast, although has to be preordered the night before. This is primarily a pub and restaurant, and although nice and simple in decor and design it had everything I needed. The staff were beyond helpful and very pleasant. Indeed I had left my phone charger at home, and they provided me one to use overnight. I was even offered easier access to my room avoiding too many stairs with all my doggie stuff. Extremely good value for money and a bonus… no charge for the dogs. Would stay here again in a heartbeat. Thank you for a lovely stay. I’m only sorry I didn’t get staff names so I could mention them in person.
Look forward to staying again.

Very pleasant hotel in a very nice location with free parking. Staff were very polite at all times and very helpful and hard working. Our room was very clean but could do with a redecoration but the bed was very comfortable. Noise from adjoining room was heard as sound proofing probably difficult to achieve as an old building with plenty of character. Didn’t affect our stay but some may not like. My other family members stayed in room 9 outstanding room as was very large family room well decorated and comfortable. Food in hotel was top quality and I would recommend this hotel to anybody visiting Biggar it surrounding area. Thanks to the staff for a very pleasant stay.

Ok for one night

The hotel was ok but our room was dated and did not have any windows! The bed was comfortable and the bathroom was fine. The food in the hotel was excellent both at dinner and breakfast. Staff were pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately there was a party in their function suite which didn't end until 12.30pm with a lot of noise continuing after this time which meant we couldn't sleep. It would have been helpful to have been informed of this either when booking or checking in, but it was not.

This is the second time we have stayed here and it did not disappoint. We had a warm welcome on arrival and we managed to get a table for dinner despite being very busy. The room was clean although the mattress was a little soft for my liking. An excellent buffet breakfast awaits you in the Morning. Would certainly recommend. 5 stars all the way.

The quirky building has its own charm., and tardis like with Roaring fire as you enter, rooms were clean and very comfortable bed, had everything we needed. Not ultra modern, but sympathetically updated but staff are wonderful and helpful. Breakfast was good, and lunch/dinner menus are excellent. As we came for a wedding in nearby castle and met people who had came from other hotels for the food. Only disappointment was dessert. Portion size of cheesecake was ultra small for the price. But generally very happy with my stay.

Family run Hotel with wonderful service

I was attending a family wedding nearby and booked The Elphinstone Hotel a few months before my visit.
I booked in early afternoon and discussed the possibility of returning to my room during the night. This presented no problems to the staff and I was given a set of keys for 2 outside doors.
The double room itself was large, very clean and brightly decorated with a wall mounted television and a radio alarm clock
There were 3 or 4 sockets available if I needed to charge my phone, use laptop etc.....
The bathroom with both a shower and bath was a pleasant surprise.
The breakfast menu had a comprehensive list including a Traditional Scottish breakfast. This was freshly cooked to order and tasted wonderful

The staff were very peasant and helpful
I'd reccomend The Elphinstone Hotel for both single nights and longers stays as the village is situated close to the M74
