This hotel is absolutely amazing! It’s so clean and beautiful. The staff are incredibly helpful and friendly, always going the extra mile. For example, when we checked out early, they prepared croissants to take away. We also forgot our water bottle on reception when leaving, but one of the staff members ran it to us in a car park!

The restaurant on site is fabulous. The food is really good, and the atmosphere is nice. The views are breathtaking. There’s also a sauna, which is a nice touch. The Black Beach Walk is also scenic.

The hotels location is incredible; close to not one but two waterfalls plus other great attractions. Dont go to the black sand beach with all the tourists because the hotel has access to your own, private black sand beach. The staff was warm, professional and accommodating. They come tell you or grab you from the dinner table (as they did with us) when the aurora was showing! The rooms were small but nice. Only complaint about the room was the bathroom sink; it was too small that any time we washed up we got water all over the place! The food was delicious however the menu is small so if you’re eating dinner on site more than 2 nights in a row you may get bored.

Overall, we would absolutely recommend Umi!!!

I stayed at Umi following a business trip, as I began a 4 day solo adventure.

Pros: excellent location, beautiful view, quiet surroundings, beautiful walk down to the black sand beach (though be weary - it is not so much a beach as a stream, but still beautiful), polite staff.

Cons: The noise in the hallway bordered on unbearable - people talking even in the most respectable way, carried and echoed all the way down the hall, and the doors did not close well so there was a lot of slamming. There is *technically* room service available, but there are NO PHONES in the room, so if you want any, you have to walk down to reception (which is literally beside the restaurant) and order it, which really defeats the purpose of room service (though to be fair the food was delicious), the hotel itself was more run down that the online photos suggest.

All in all, the location really made this stay for me, and the limited occupancy made parking and such always very easy. However, the hotel itself, and what it offered, was generally underwhelming. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't as unique an experience as I was hoping for.

From the moment we arrived, we felt welcome. The staff were always attentive and friendly while still being down to earth. Both breakfast and dinner were just lovely, with locally sourced ingredients and creative cocktails. The sauna and yoga room proved necessary at the end of each day of hiking and exploring the area - it’s so close to Skógafoss, Seljalandsfoss, Solheimajökull, Reynisfjara, and Vik. This is a beautiful property, with awe-inspiring scenery from every angle, so bring your camera. The walk to the beach takes a bit longer than they say, but it’s worth it. We got lucky early on our first evening with a short but unexpected burst of aurora activity - just standing outside looking at the stars in the right place at the right time! - but they do have a wake-up service for anyone wishing to see the northern lights when they start up. My only (minor) demerit was for the bed comfort, but it’s certainly not the worst I’ve had in Iceland or anywhere else in Europe, so it’s barely worth mentioning. I will definitely return to UMI! <3

Not good value for money - at $600/ night and an exceptional rating I had high expectations and this was not met. Breakfast was very poor. Meals in restaurant hit or miss (gnocchi was inedible not only for me but a lady at a nearby table said she had sent it back the night before). During the day, ironing boards are out in the hallway for the linens - have never seen this before. The welcome gift of a bottle sparking wine was a miniature for 2 guests. Overall disappointing and would not be back.

Beautiful, small boutique hotel in great location off the Ring road route near Skógafoss and 30 min from Dyrhólaey and black sand beach. Staff is lovely and dinner is great. It is somewhat isolated so dining at the hotel is the easiest as it’s probably a 40 minute drive to Vik. There is a 15 min private walk on property to black sand beach with virtually no one in sight for miles - stunning. At night horses came from the nearby farm to drink from the little pond outside our window and guests were feeding them. A great, peaceful hotel.

Best hotel in the area in my opinion. Definitely would recommend if you're travelling through. Breakfast was nice and the evening restaurant food was very impressive. Only issue i found was the price tag on using the sauna, very expensive, hence why i didnt use it.

Quite a disappointing experience given the stellar reviews. We were very excited to visit. When we got there, we were given a twin bed room (vs double) without asking which really ruined the experience for us on the first night. While they fixed this quickly day 2, the biggest disappointment was that we signed up for a wake up call to see the northern lights and they didn’t knock on our door. We travelled thousands of kms to come see it and while they appeared that night (as confirmed by the reception) they missed knocking on our door. If they didn’t offer that service we would have been alert on our own but we depended on the hotel and was disappointed by the service.

Amazing hotel on south coast near waterfalls

The location is amazing, and the hotel is super beautiful. You can walk 10 min down to a black sand beach. The restaurant is incredible—one of the best meals we had in Iceland. The bar area is great as well. Everything was perfect except the shower didn’t drain well and was fixed after our shower, otherwise, it would have been perfect. As a bonus, there seems to be a house that loves hanging around all the time.

Don’t expect to get much sleep

We enjoyed our time here. We did find vegan options at the restaurant and breakfast. The staff alerted us that the northern lights were visible. It was breathtaking. We couldn’t believe how strong the aurora we saw was.

Some of the other guests really played a role in our stay not being as pleasant as we had hoped. The rooms have no sound proofing. You can hear everything in the hallway. So many people were up early, shouting, children yelling + running. I am usually a heavy sleeper that can sleep through nonstop music and construction but this was something else. We would not stay here again due to the noise.

UMI hotel was by far the most magical stay during our trip. Sometimes pictures of a hotel don’t align in real-life, in this case the UMI hotel was actually better than pictured. The location is perfect for those seeing the south of Iceland. The hotel itself if only a 15 min walk to a quiet beach, and the neighbors horses are frequent visitors, which was a bonus for me. The hotel does wake up calls for the northern lights, and we got to experience them both nights of our stay (very end of October). Their dinner menu is is broad enough to keep you interested for multiple nights, they have a great breakfast spread which is included, and I love their little bar/lounge for an after dinner drink. The rooms are modern and clean and beds and pillows are very comfortable. And on top go all that a great staff. Overall wonderful experience and would stay there again in a heartbeat.

We went to the UMI for a few nights to celebrate my 60th birthday. Staff was lovely and so nice upon our arrival. Our room was so clean and so pretty and overlooked the grass fields and could see the waves crashing onto the beach about 20 minutes away. We immediately (upon Jason's recommendation!) took a walk out to the beach. He said to wear appropriate shoes as it was very marshy. We had hiking poles and walked out there in about 20 minutes - never had an issue. We were the only people on the beach and it was amazing. So beautiful and peaceful.. Great place! Breakfast was very nice, happy hour was lovely, and my birthday dinner at their wonderful restaurant was both delicious and fun! They sang happy birthday! I highly recommend this hotel - we will DEFINITELY go there again on our next Iceland trip!

There were pros and cons to our stay. I will still give 10/10 because the dinner we had was amazing, the property and walk to the beach was stunning, and the staff was incredibly friendly.
However, the rooms were smaller than the other stays in Iceland. It also got very hot at night and the window would only open an inch or so. No black out curtains but this wasn't a problem for us during our September stay. The bathroom sink would spill over if turned on full blast. These things were annoying and might deter some but we would probably stay again and recommend to family and friends!

The hotel is very peaceful and it was also nice to be able to open the window in our room to let in some cool air in July when we were there. We enjoyed the complimentary breakfast -the food and coffee was very good. We would stay at Umi Hotel again.
