The hotel staff were very good. The room was clean and large. The internet connection was poor in our original room but the helpful staff moved us to another room which had a very good connection. The location was good and being a converted old monastery the hotel had lots of character although some things about our room and the hotel generally did seem a bit tired,
We did find it disappointing that there was no coffee/tea making facilities in the room Also the coffee machines at breakfast produced rather strong bitter coffee but breakfast was generally good.

The property is a Monastery as stated…the side where our room was very dingy and smelled. The carpets in the halls were dirty with stains. The bathroom was weird with layout. The toilet was literally so close to the sink my legs were under the sink . The shower was a step in shower bath with mold all over. Was not worth it at all. I felt unclean. Not the mention the eerie feel from all the pictures on the falls and darkness in hallways. Didn’t like it at all.

However, close to many restaurants and walking around.

The facilty was really nice. Like the architecture and rooms were spacious and comfortable. Convenient location to restaurants, coffee shops, boardwalk, etc.

It’s not that I didn’t like, but there wasn’t a desk in the room and basically no available outlets to plug in phone, accessories, or computer without unplugging the lights or TV. The rooms had plenty of additional space to provide a desk or space to work, but just wasn’t available.

The toilet didn’t work but staff expedited to get fixed but l also offered to relocate me to another room. They also provided me a complementary bottle of wine which is of course fantastic.

I’d stay here again but would call prior or request a desk.. I work too much :-)

Good trip with some reservations

There were good and bad aspects to the hotel. For example, on the good side; the hotel was well located (half way between the train station and down town), the staff was friendly and helpful, the room was big and comfortable.

On the negative side; the hotel had the worst WIFI I ever experienced in a hotel and some of the towels and rugs were a bit worn.

Overall it was a good experience.

Rooms are nice, AC is good and good showers,
Only think I noticed that I am not happy about is No Coffee or Tea Facilities in Room, and No Toiletries in the Bathroom, sounds silly but to me its just expected

Disappointing stay

The bedroom was very old fashioned and it was located next to a very noisy street. There were some machines in the hotel next to the bedroom that made a horrible noise all through the night, which kept us awake all night. The bedroom was boring and lacked character without any pictures on the walls, flowers or ornaments. One of the bedside lamps was broken. The television was sitting on a table that blocked most of the mirror, which is nonsensical. The bathroom was old and in very poor condition, as were the wardrobes.
The towels were old and very uncomfortable (too rough for the body and dry) The curtains in the bedroom were old and dirty with holes in them and there were several blood stains on the curtains. The swimming pool was nice, however, there was only one parasol available in the complete pool area and the parasol was broken. We’d booked to stay three nights, but we left the next morning after the first night because we weren’t going to endure any further discomfort. We received a refund but no compensation or any gesture of goodwill from the management for the inconvenience caused.

I paid Euro 159 for a one night stay which was not value for money for a very basic run down room with no amenities. Ok it was a monastery which is interesting for a walk around but as a hotel it was not fair value. The superb rating on my booking agency website was a total mis-representation.

Really excellent stop in a lovely hotel. Staff were first rate and the building is incredible. We parked under the hotel for free and the safe was free as well. Breakfast was very good and reception were very helpful, with extra pillows etc.
My only small gripe is that it was extremely warm as it’s too early in the year to switch AC on!!

This is a beautiful building, well furnished and spotlessly clean. It was great value for our stay in February. The only downside is that the free parking immediately outside the hotel is limited to 15 minutes. There is then a secure car park below the hotel that costs 10 euros per night.
Overall, highly recommended.

The small pool was a delight although crowded every afternoon. Insufficient space for guests due to lack of lounger space.

Booked a superior room which we were lead to believe from the pictures, that it had a lounge area too. The room we had was a good double room with balcony which was fine but we did feel mislead. Also, it would have been nice to have tea/coffee making facilities in the room.
Reception staff were a credit to the hotel. The hotel itself had plenty of character. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Cafeteria menu was limited but tasty. Would've liked to have seen a couple of traditional Spanish dishes on the menu though.

A holy feeling.

The room we were allocated initially was dreadful, depressing and a nasty drainage smell, we were upgraded quickly however it came with an extra cost of 20 euro a night. There is no doubt it’s a beautiful building full of religious artefacts but the rooms are a little Spartan and the corridors are cold. We ate in the bar/cafeteria one evening and the food was poor however the breakfasts were extremely good. On the whole though good value for money.

This was our second visit to this hotel. Lovely old building. Check in was a bit slow. Room ok but for a 4* hotel really missed a few details - no hair conditioner or body lotion. For a light snack in the evening only the bar was open and between four of us, each item that we wanted to order was not available..... bad luck i suppose.

Hotel's policy is non-smoking and a room that was flooded with tobacco smell was asigned to me. When asked at the registration counter the answer was: we can't control if guests smoke in the room and there is no other room available (End of quote) !

Nice hotel. Unfortunately the first room we were put in had an awful droning sound (I think from air conditioning units or maybe the kitchen) and made sleeping very difficult. The hotel staff were very happy to move us. Our second room was better for noise, but a little tired.

Breakfast is a standard buffet, with a very nice selection of fruits, cereals, etc. that would suit almost everyone. Even cookies.

Swimming pool is great; Well kept, and cool.

The building itself is quite beautiful in my opinion.

Tried ordering room service late one night but we were told we’d get a ring back. Never did and the kitchen closed. Ended up going out instead; there are plenty of bars and restaurants close by.

Would probably stay again, but maybe spend more for a high quality room.

Right Hotel, Wrong Time and Place!

I had asked Hotels.com for a hotel in Cádiz. Unfortunately Cádiz city was half an hour away by train or Catamaran, and Monasterio was in a small town of minimal interest, especially over Christmas when many places were closed. I’m sure I would have a much better impression in spring or summer.

A hotel with a difference

We arrived an hour before check in but were pleased to find our room ready, the bedroom is very spacious, enormous bed and lots of storage. Bathroom had hairdryer and toiletries All the staff were helpful and reception sorted a taxi to the airport €32euros. The pool/garden area was never crowded and there is lots of seating areas around the hotel, which is so beautiful and historic. It really has a very special feel and is very different but classy and very reasonably priced. Buffet breakfast €10 cafe bar reasonable e.g. €10pizza €12chicken. Be aware that in the old town which the hotel is situated in, it's difficult to find food 2-6 but then food is served everywhere until 12ish.The nearest beach is on the same side of the water as the hotel and takes 25min to walk and is beautiful quiet and unspoilt with no bars or shops so take your own drinks/food. The other beach is over the bridge and again vast and beautiful but is a good 45min walk with nowhere to stop on the way, it has more of a typical holiday feel with lots of bars/restaurants along the front, a bus does go to this area from near the hotel. Santa Maria is a beautiful place with lovely people and safe feeling.

We stayed in superior room for 4 nights, adequate room, quite large and clean, good size balcony overlooking pool with views over town and countryside. Quiet and relaxing, conversion from monastery very good with many original features. Large safe and secure parking in basement. Exterior of building looking tired.
Big let down was the dining room, would return to hotel again but would eat elsewhere.
Cold buffets for breakfast and dinner were adequate so called hot buffet was barely lukewarm and strange selection. 2 nights dinner no potatoes of any kind were provided, 1 night pork chop was served with pizza slices, another night horrible mini burgers were served with a greasy rice and bean mix, inedible. No member of staff appeared to watch when supplies of food were becoming empty and it took long time to be replenished. Do not compare food shown on website to what is actually served.

Excellent value for money, El Puerto de Santa Maria is a nice town currently undergoing a bit of refurbishment. Monasterio de San Miguel has a fantastic interior which exudes character and the rooms are comfortable and spacious. Only thing missing (must be a UK/US thing) is coffee making facilities in the room although it did contain a fridge.
Definitely worth a visit.

Spain at it's finest!

The hotel was a gorgeous renovation (opened in the 1980s) of an actual Spanish monastery, obvious by both the architecture and original artwork. Luxurious with friendly staff (many multilingual) and easy walking distance to downtown, the train station and ferry to Cadíz. The beach area is a 35 minute walk, but perfect for me as I love to walk everywhere. The price, €43/night, was exceptional for my two-day weekend stay (although the street directly in front of the hotel was under significant repair at the time, so the low rate may have been a temporary reflection of the construction due to the timing of my stay.)

I will definitely stay here again when I return to southern Spain!

Great hotel with easy access to many places

Close to bus/train station. Can walk everywhere in El Puerto. Beautiful old monastery hotel with nice public areas (garden, pool, terraces ). Excellent breakfast. Our room was probably the most basic but was spacious and clean with comfortable beds. If you hire a car you can park in the 'central' public underground parking for €3.95 for 24 hours, otherwise avoid driving as you do not need a car there and can go to Cadiz by catamaran for a couple of euros. We hired a car for a few days to visit inland - Los pueblos blancos and the coast, and driving around is easy. We enjoyed our stay there very much.

A lovely well appointed hotel. The building is delightful, cool and peaceful. A nice pool, good breakfast but the town itself offered very little for our three night stay. Fortunately we caught the train to Jerez for one day and the catamaran to Cadiz on another day but El Puerto de Santa Maria was nondescript and generally closed! Some good eateries offering local food however.

We stayed at this hotel during the Jerez Moto GP weekend. Location was good, just away from the centre but close enough to see everything with a short walk. Only down side was it was hard to get served a drink in the bar when seated outside, and most of the time it was quicker to go to the bar yourself. But overall very good.

A very pleasant day in your beautiful Hotel. A sensitive and very attractive renovation with many of the original features retained. Service excellent --staff kind and courteous. Bedrooms and bathrooms spotless with good quality towels and toiletries.

A nice enough conversion of an old monastery, that is if you don't mind the odd resemblance to the hotel in the shining. Old priestly paraphernalia – cool & creepy – abound and the spaniard still insist on pretending that two twin beds pushed up against each other are an acceptable substitute for a real double bed for grown adults. Nice pool and centrally located near the 'downtown' area. On-site parking is a huge plus in a town where parking is not easy

This was a beautiful hotel, although recently renovated to a high standard it retains many original features, well located for town centre and about 20 minutes walk to the beach, a shuttle bus to the beach is provided in high season. The hotel was exceptionally clean throughout. The staff were friendly and helpful especially those on reception who spoke perfect English. I would definately stay here again.

The hotel is large and impressive. I would call it \"overstuffed\". The lobbies are very opulent, but the halls leading to our room looked a little worn. The room was adequate but had a heavy perfumed smell that seemed to be covering up cigarette smoke or who-knows what. We decided to forego housekeeping to spare us from a fresh application of the fragrance.

The pool is quite nice, and the reception staff was very helpful. The hotel is fine, but I feel we could have gotten better value elsewhere. Definitely a hotel for a slightly older set.

Monasterio San Miguel in El Puerto de Santa Maria

Driving to the hotel in torrential rain is not easy. When we eventually found the hotel down the narrowest street passable we entered the car park and left our car there for the duration of our stay - it is not easy to navigate the streets of EPdSM. The entry to the hotel via the car park with luggage is difficult with a dingy staircase to negotiate. However once in the hotel it is magnificent with antique furniture and art everywhere. Our room did not match the public rooms - in need of some TLC but adequate. Enjoyed coffees and cakes in the cafe bar but dinner there was very disappointing - did not use the restaurant.. It is situated 400 metres from the seafront (public car park). The resort is not the pretiiest and looked 'well worn', perhaps with a bit of sunshine it may look different but unlikely. We caught the train into Cadiz, the station is 800 metres from the hotel. This was well worth it with the fare less than €5 return and the station in Cadiz right at the harbour and within 800 metres of the cathedral - it really beats getting the car out.

Lastly on the hotel, it is huge and takes up a complete block and finding your room can be a trial. A better direction from reception on check in would have helped initially.

Would we go back to EPdSM - definitely not which is a pity because the hotel was just right for our needs.

This was a truley lovely hotel. Having the underground car parking was an asset although 13 euros per night to park there we felt was a bit expensive. The breakfast was really nice and the staff were very efficient and polite. We would certainly use this hotel again if we were to visit the area again

The Monasterio San Miguel

A lovely old hotel full of fabulous antiques. A very cordial staff. The room, however, was small and crowded with a service bar practically in the center of the room and blocking a very small window. Try not to get room 170. The continental breakfast was excellent, so much more than the usual croissants. The hotel was located close to the center of Puerto de Santa Maria, and was in walking distance of the tourist office, the trains, and a wonderful market. The hotel has a very good coffee shop with many selections, as well as good value for the price of food.

Would recommend

Stayed here as we got a good bargain. Nice and friendly staff. 20 min walk to the beach or there is a pool to lounge beside if you prefer. Great buffet breakfast. Beside all the lovely restaurants.

Lovely hotel (once we found it). It it stunning and serene once inside with many original artworks and curioisities from its monastary days. It is very quiet and has a relaxing quality. On the downside, there was a constant smell of sewerage, not only in our room but around the rest of the hotel 24/7. The staff were not very friendly and I always find it cheeky for hotels to charge £18 per day to park in their own underground hotel! The hotel staff seemed more concerned with what extras you had and your payment method than worrying about customers needs. A lovely hotel and with work this really should be a 5/5...sadly it isnt though for reasons outlined.

Would definitely recommend it

Hotel was lovely - very large, you could easily get lost in it. Beach was located 5 kms away though - you had to drive to it. Only a port in the town.
