Staff were friendly. Big single glazed windows right across the room felt very over looked. Noisy from main room it was extremely hot in room but still had to close windows because of the noise. Turned up for breakfast and had to search for someone to ask. Found the cleaner who was cleaning even though we had booked a time slot. Then waited 45 mins for it which was not worth the wait. It was very greasy.it served a purpose to see a friend and room was clean . Felt a bit like fawlty towers No coffee had to ask the an instant jar of melow birds arrived. Toaster but no bread.

Great hospitality, very friendly and helpful staff. Nice room with lovely bathroom. A bit stuffy due to weather, would help if main window could be opened slightly to allow air to circulate. Good breakfast, so will definitely recommend the Boars Head, and all going well will return later this year.

Great location, friendly staff

We only stayed for a night and it was hot, but the room was airy with the window open a little. The staff were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately I hadn't realised breakfast was included because we'd have got up a little earlier but we managed a piece of toast before we had to checkout.

The main road outside is a little noisy but it seems that entertainment in Middlewich for youngsters is limited to driving around...

However, the Boars Head was still a great place to stop over before our canal trip!

The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was good and reasonably priced. The room I eventually stayed in still suffered with noise from passing traffic. The room although clean was dated with poor quality furniture, the wall behind the bed was dirty with lots of spill marks and the paint needed refreshing. There was a lack of sockets, it would have been impossible to use a PC. I had to pull a bedside cabinet out to recharge my phone. The water pressure was low so only a trickle of hot water, the shower was the same. The on/off switch for the shower was in the bedroom and after searching as to why I had no hot water I found it - no instructions given. There is no double glazing so in many of the rooms there is road noise.

Worst nights sleep in well over 10 years

Early check-in good. Nice big room comfortable bed. That’s end of positives.
Room faces busy main road with relentless traffic noise. Trying to get to sleep after midnight was impossible. Open window was at 7-8 ft high and impossible to reach to close. After 1am group of people sat down at the tables directly below my room outside and proceeded to speak, shout and laugh loudly until well after 2am. However traffic noise continued making sleep impossible. At 3.30am have not had a single minute of sleep had had enough. Looked for a way of closing window. Chair didn’t look strong enough to stand on so resulting in swinging cushion multiple times until knocked the arm of the catch up which particles the window but still pretty noisy. At some point after managed to get a bit of sleep only to be re-woken at 5.30 and that was it. The worst nights sleep I have had in well over 10 years. This at a time I was already tired after a busy day including 3 hours driving.
Arranged to have the included breakfast at 9am. Went down to find no one serving or taking orders, all help yourself. Only coffee option was a glass container containing mixture of granules see photo, no thanks. Not enough milk to have any cereal. At 9.40, only 20 minutes before check-out time someone came to take my order. 3 times I told her what to remove from full English, including it being written down still got it wrong getting no mushrooms. Sausage herby and awful, bacon very fatty. So just beans waffle

We arrived at the hotel and reported to reception a nice chap showed us our room and gave us one key, we went out for a meal and arrived back to be locked out front door wouldn’t open with our one room key and the back door was locked so after a while we managed to get in through the kitchen no mention of breakfast or time so we went down at 8-30am nobody about so made a coffee and a lady turned up and said would we like breakfast which we had and it was first class . This is not a complaint but hope it helps

Strong recommend

1) Traditional pub room for 2 night stay
2) Friendly & helpful staff esp “Liz”
3) Food very good (excellent English bedroom)
4) After midnight you need to ring a mobile for staff to let you in
5) Freeview reception in room #3 was patchy
6) Approx 6 parking spaces from & rear (some street parking also)
7) Free Wifi is one of those “sign-up” marketing ones which I declined good 4G receptions

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid

Had to wipe my feet on the way out.
Went and bought my own towel as the one provided smelt.
Bathroom was a disgrace, definitely wasn’t cleaned for quite some time, the windows were dirty, the TV didn’t work and the food in the restaurant was disgusting. Only ate in there the first night of my 4 night stay.
Ended up checking out early as couldn’t stick it any longer.

The stay started fine with great service from a lovely Irish lady. However the following morning when I went for breakfast the place was in darkness with no sign of any staff. I waited for 10 minutes then returned to my room. I tried again 15 minutes later and it was still in darkness. The 3rd time there was 3 other guests waiting...... We found a kettle and made a drink and waited. No sign of any member of staff. I couldn't wait any longer so I left to find breakfast elsewhere at my own expense.
Don't think I'll be back....

Not deserving of review score

Location suited my last minute visit, price was cheap and review score was promising (8.4) for bed and breakfast which was all I needed, so I booked.

Minimal interaction with staff, shown to room, all ok.

Room had no TV reception (cable missing connector so not plugged in). Only ceiling lights as all wall fittings missing bulbs and shower doors didn't shut properly (managed not to flood bathroom).
The mattress was very basic and sank as soon as I sat on it & the pillow was too firm for a soft mattress, so with the summer weather, it was not a restful night.

Breakfast was help yourself and a very basic continental.
For the price I can't complain too much, it was clean at least, but wouldn't stay again.

Other issue was a noisy guest who had their TV (that worked) on very loud until gone midnight, not the hotels fault but thank god I always take ear plugs.

OK basic accommodation in old school pub.

Old school pub accommodation but my room was relatively modern and ok for a short stay.
Beware the pub / hotel is on a busy road so if you get a room at the front you will need to keep the windows shut, but handily they do give you a fan.
No cooked breakfast available during my stay, only a DIY continental breakfast which was adequate and varied. Limited parking on site (can only fit max 6 cars in car park and it also serves as pub CP so difficult to get a space. Unofficial parking opposite hotel on side road outside a DIY store.

A hotel needs to do two basic things. Provide a good nights sleep and be clean. The Board Head did neither of these. The springs poked through the mattress and there was a water pump (or something) which would hourly groan for a minute or so waking us up. While the sheets were clean, even the floor hadn’t been hoovered, there was dust EVERYWHERE, and the bathroom was grimy. If the sheets hadn’t been clean, and our stay had been longer than 10 hours we would have left.

Positives.. The staff were absolutely lovely, and it was cheap

Large sprawling pub / hotel full of old world character. Friendly and efficient staff who oversaw everything from check in, serving at the bar and providing a lovely fresh cooked breakfast. Great value for money so we’ll definitely be back in the future

Shambolic

Bedding clean and comfortable. Only positive really. Bathroom OK but shower tiles and grout very grubby. Breakfast first morning waited 15 minutes with no sign of any staff, then went wandering and calling out, with no response. Found way into kitchen where all breakfast foods were laid out on the worktop, un- covered, part cooked bacon and cooked sausages, health hazard, presumably to microwave to heat them yuck! Still no sign of any staff so did another tour of calling. Then a lady appeared and said they'd been out the back???!!!!. She directed us to help ourselves to items from the fridge for juice and milk, but the milk jug was empty, there was no cutlery out. Kettle was on top of the fridge but no water available!! Had to ask for white bread and marmalade. She took cooked breakfast order which I declined having seen the open cooked /part cooked meats in the kitchen. Breakfast day 2 was no better. When we got into the breakfast room there were already 2 people there. No milk available, no water to fill kettle and again no bread and no teabags. Eventually there were 14 people seated with so many basic breakfast items not available. The same lady said she hadn't realised that they hadn't realised they'd finished the bread yesterday. By this time the brown bread had finished too. She sent someone out to buy some bread!! By this time there was a fair bit of good humoured banter amongst the guests. Talk about Fawlty towers! WHole place could do with a deep clean.

Lovey place but the road noise is terrible

Right next to a main road - constant noise all night therefore didn’t sleep too well. It’s not the hotels fault obviously.

Nice friendly hotel

Room was nice and clean. Traffic noise was very load and kept us awake most of the nights. Nothing they can do about that tho. Request 2 vegetarian breaks for 2 nights stay. Request was not made. Therefore you would think you would get more of the none meat items, which we did not, disappointed with that but overall the breakfast was nice. All the staff was friendly and helpful.
