Great location, free car parking for guests, and nice room with a comfy bed and lovely bedding. Bathroom could do with updating, and shower wasn’t really useable as temperature kept fluctuating from hot to cold. Empty shower gel, so no toiletries provided, but we had our own. Leaking shower screen with a gap underneath it, no water glasses and only 1 bath towel provided for a 2 person booking - managed to collect one from reception after 2 trips and double checking there wasn’t another towel in the wardrobe. Could do with deep cleaning / vacuuming under furniture as some of visible carpet was grim, lots of limescale in the loo etc. Very short staffed at breakfast, so difficult to get attention when everything was running out (hot water, ketchup, orange juice). Could have been a good stay, just lacked a bit round the edges which made us grumble!

Whilst I can accept that the building is very old and wonky and tired (there's only so much you can do to buildings if that nature) what I can't accept is the utter state of the bed itself.

Literally the worst mattress I have ever slept on. It almost folded in half when I so much as looked at the edge it was so old and weak. When I finally climbed into bed it was like sleeping in a bowl - there was no structure at all to it. The mattress was on a bed base that was too small for it and the undersheet was too small for the mattress.

When this was combined by the loud creaking floorboards everytime someone walked past, light spilling under the big gap under the door etc it didn't make for a very peaceful night's sleep.

The 2 x staff I interacted with were very friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was again poor though. Poached eggs were cooked so long they were almost inedible. Yoghurts were very low quality, cheap UPF with no fruit. Muesli more dust than cereal.

Just felt like they were clinging on to existence.

Seemed to be the only option in Tonbridge. Unfortunatley, despite the convenience for my location on that day, I'd rather stay elsewhere and commute in if I am to ever need to visit again.

Been staying in this hotel many times over the years and it is sadly going down hill. Whilst the main hotel is older and quirky the annex part in the car park really needs an overhaul.
Lots of little things like blown bulbs, bathroom heating not working, missing sink plugs, no plastic tumblers in the rooms anymore, badly stocked bar..I could go on.
The whole place is just looking very tired and all the little comforts in the rooms are no longer provided.

The staff were helpful but the room and amenities were dire. To enter the room, which was in the annexe, you had to walk through hundreds of cigarette ends and a bin which had not been emptied for ages, based on mess around it. To say the room was tired is an understatement. The carpet was threadbare and torn, the net curtains ripped and the bed ……. How do I describe that? Uncomfortable is being kind. I have never been on anything like it. Worn out, lumpy and the edges unyielding. Two single mattresses pushed together with a hard ridge at the join. No mattress cover either. On top of that the room is infested with clothes moths. The bathroom tiles had filthy grout and the shower head should be thrown out. Water taps needed persuading ……. How this hotel has a three star rating is beyond me. I am sorry but the staff are the only thing preventing one star.

The cleanliness and condition of my room were unacceptable. There were cobwebs in the bedroom, and the wallpaper was ripped in several areas. The bathroom was also in very poor condition, not clean with lots of visible mould, a dirty shower curtain, and multiple black stains across different areas of the ceiling. In addition, the carpet outside the bathroom was damp throughout my stay, and the room had not been properly cleaned, with sticky stains left on the furniture.
The bar service was also far below standard. The drink selection was extremely limited, with basic options such as lemonade and orange juice unavailable.

I also found that the photos on your website are misleading and do not reflect the current state of the rooms, particularly the bathrooms, which are in significantly worse condition than depicted. These should be updated to accurately show the actual quality.

My stay at the hotel above the Rose and Crown was genuinely awful from start to finish. When I checked in, the room wasn’t just dirty, it was unhygienic to a shocking level. There were used condoms in the toilet, human faeces left in the toilet, and old pizza boxes scattered around. I asked to be moved, hoping it was a one-off, but the second room wasn’t any better. Again, there was human faeces in the toilet, showing the rooms hadn’t been cleaned at all.

To make things worse, when I ordered a drink downstairs, the pint I was served had visible floaters in it. When I asked for a refund, I was told they were unable to provide one, despite the drink clearly being undrinkable.

The entire place felt like a genuine health hazard. Because of the appalling conditions, we checked out just a few hours later. The whole experience was completely unacceptable and extremely unpleasant.

I have photos but they aren’t “family friendly” to share on this platform

AVOID!!!

The Rose & Crown was THE place to stay in Tonbridge 40 years ago. Now, it is neglected, there is no restaurant, the bar which used to be packed was empty. What a shame. In the room, the curtain was hanging off the rail, there were no tooth mugs and the door closer flapped in the breeze. I had my wedding reception there in 1982. Then, it was good.

Cleanliness...there were cobwebs on the ceiling right above my bed, grime around taps in bathroom, no toilet paper, or bin liner in bathroom. We would have had a nice view from our window if the grass had been cut...it was so overgrown & uncut that it actually really let the place down 👎👎👎 windows could have been doing with a clean 👎
Im disabled & on the first night l had nowhere to park as a works van was parked in the disabled bay, my 2 sisters & niece had to get out of my car & guide me into a very tight space (the only space left in the car park). I did get toilet paper once l asked at reception 👍
Our beds were very comfortable, we where in the ground floor rooms through the car park. It was quite...a consideration to maybe take on board is at night when going into the room, is very dark as the lighting was past our room so trying to find the lock on the door was difficult.

We did enjoy our stay & would stay again.

We booked a room whilst working in the area, having been before earlier in the year. The room was comfortable enough, but the bathroom was much more modern and updated. Staff were friendly and service was good, but unfortunately, the parking really let the site down. There were lots of contractors and vans blocking various areas, and as the parking is also used as a public car park with JustPark, it made it busier. We had to ask around what time people were going and ask them to swap and block us in, just to get parked, so it was far from ideal. It would have taken less time and effort to drive away from the area and stay at a corporate chain, which is likely what we would do next time, as it removed all convenience this time. If parking is sorted, we would happily return.

A creaking floor in an old building is quaint but the whole of the floor creaks, bedroom corridor is is too much. The room had a basic clean but the toilet needs descaling. It's not nice to use a toilet like this. The carpets are threadbare to the point our room had a big rip in the carpet which is a trip hazard that I had daily. Staff are pleasant. Parking good. Bar void of people, atmosphere and everything. The biggest bug bare was no evening food. Outside it boasts about food and grill. Reality, no evening dining

Disappointed - Avoid

What a disappointment. If you’re expecting what you see in the photos advertised…don’t.

Arrived and the first room we were allocated was grim.

- The toilet didn’t flush
- The toilet was dirty, the kind of dirty where it doesn’t look like it’s been cleaned properly for some time and simple deep clean would have done the job
- Sink also covered in old grime, again easily sorted with a deep clean
- Carpet that was snagged and dirty
- Bed - one of its legs looked to be holding on for dear life
- No loo roll
- Cobwebs
- Grubby old yellowing shower curtain
- General stains and splashes on wall
- No shower gel etc just one small bar or soap to share
- Complimentary tray (tea, coffee, water etc) nothing like the photo.

Asked for a change of room due to none flushing toilet and the customer service was terrible. General body language and the tone of the conversation made us feel very uncomfortable and like we were very much an inconvenience.

Second room marginally better, but still no loo roll, stains on walls, poor quality mattress and dirty toilet again.

We were meant to be staying two nights but only did one and booked ourself into another local hotel at our cost. We just didn’t feel comfortable, particularly safe or welcome.

Says it has a restaurant, it doesn’t and the whole place was just tired and feels like it’s on its way out. When I used the toilet in the main reception, AGAIN no toilet roll.

Convenient to everything ddowntown around the Cardiff Castle. Staff was excellent and very helpful. It was a little hard to find and we had to park in the multi level car park a few blocks away. But loved the place.
The only negative thing was the orange juice at breakfast. I'm sure it was a mistake I had already taken a few large gulps of it before I tasted it was very furmented. I didn't do very well from 12 to 24hrs after that because of that. However, the rest of the breakfast was top notch and food excellent. I think someone just loaded a bad batch of orange juice in their container.

We were given a top-floor, city view room during 30c weather. The room was crooked. The floor was uneven. The bed was slanted. The heat made the room sticky and unbearable. Opening the window made it smell of pigeon poop. The bathroom was mouldy with a disgusting shower curtain, a metal holder that my husband cut his head on, no temperature control on the very hot water, and tub sides that were painful to climb over. A complaint lead us to another room on the garden/parking side that was much better. The staff who assigned us the horrible room was unfriendly almost to the point of rudeness. The staff who reassigned us the next morning was very friendly and helpful. We do not recommend a city view room. Fair value for close to high street but chose a garden room in the newer wing.

Not good

I went for a deluxe room but there certainly was nothing deluxe about only the size.
The room was so hot I could hardly sleep. The towel rail was on fully and could not be turned off.
Bathroom was like a sauna and shower head full of scale with a trickle of water coming out.

Not somewhere I would ever return to, it was dirty, the toilet had not been flushed from previous occupant, terrible drain smell, broken lamp in room, only one mug for us to either share or take it in turns to have a cuppa, uncomfortable bed, very ratty, no redeeming qualities whatsoever!!

I stayed for a week and the best part of the stay was the bed. It was super comfy and got a great nights sleep each night. The bathroom was ok, but the shower was small, so a bit of a squeeze. There was also a step in my room, from the bathroom to the bed part which took a bit of getting use to. The staff I met were very friendly and helpful.

I stayed for one night with breakfast included, and unfortunately, the cost is not justified by the level of service or the state of the hotel. The bathroom was unhygienic—dirty toilet, no water pressure in the cold shower, and water leaked everywhere. The coffee setup was poor: a dirty cup, barely any coffee in the sachets, and no spoon provided.

The bed was uncomfortable, with a noticeable dip in the mattress and a constant squeaking sound. I could hear music from the bar and footsteps from other guests, which made it hard to sleep. There was no air conditioning, and the dirty windows were covered in pigeon droppings.

The only positive was the charm of the building’s original style, which I appreciated. However, the place desperately needs attention, upgrades, and proper maintenance.

This is not a best western hotel

We booked last minute under the impression that this hotel was part of the best western group
According to Various google searches
But became very obvious upon arrival that the standards and decor were not what you would expect from a best western hotel
Carpets were filthy, dusty surfaces , no plug which didn't matter as the sink took ages to drain away
Mattress was uncomfortable and noisy due to springs
Pre booked so felt we wouldn't get our money back if cancelled after checkin
Very disappointing as the photos do not give a true impression of what was probably a nice coachhouse several years ago

Sadly this hotel is extremely old fashioned, has issues with cleanliness within the room to the point where I felt filthy, no breakfast after certain times although advertised as ran out and issues with pigeons right outside the window of my room.

I have complained to Expedia. Good location but aside from that sadly everything about this hotel is not good!

The hotel is in a good central area for Tonbridge with easy access to shops and Tonbridge School which was were my daughter was getting married.

All the staff we met were polite so had no problem there.

Unfortunately what let's the hotel down is that it is in dire need of renovation.

Room 5,the bathroom shower could not be adjusted from scalding hot, so impossible to have a proper shower, there was also lack of basics with barely enough toilet paper for my wife and myself.

The bar had run out of half the shown drinks on the pumps when used.

We did not have breakfast so unable to comment on that.

We are repeat visitors to the Rose & Crown. There's no other hotel with location and free parking. As usual we had a twin bed room in the annex. The beds were okay, not fantastic. Room was clean, and the hotel was quiet at night. All the staff we spoke to were friendly and helpful. Although, we did have to ask for towels and loo roll for the bathroom when we arrived. Shower was the biggest let down - nonexistent water pressure - but there's a bath if you want it instead.

Almost fine

Good location on Tonbridge High Street, decent price at the last minute. Staff friendly when around.

However, the room was cold and the radiator didn't work; there was no cover on the mattress (sheet straight onto mattress is weird); and the shower was dirty and didn't work properly.

Shower: body hair on the wall and shower curtain, water pressure/temperature awful. The water was so hot, and the cold pressure so low, that a hot low pressure dribble was all I could achieve. It was as disappointing a start to the day as it sounds.

There was no one at reception when I checked out.

It's an old 'characterful' building, but there's no excuse for the dirty shower.

Pleasant Stay

Pleasantly surprised after reading negative reviews. Staff were friendly and helpful. Room was warm, clean and comfortable. Yes, the floors creaked but its what you would expect in an old building such as this. Plenty of hot water for bath/shower. However shower lost pressure due to lots of people showering at the same time each morning. There was a good choice for breakfast and cooked to order. Excellent location in the centre of town.

Shockingly Awful

The only positive is the staff were friendly. The state of the place is not what is shown on the website. When we arrived and were shown to our twin room, we walked into a furnace. The room was so hot, we turned to radiator off straight away and opened the windows. We had to leave them open. After we came back for the night the radiator was still so hot you couldnt put your hand on it. I only slept for two hours as my mattress was so old and the springs were loud and digging in to me. The following day i went to the front desk and told them we were leaving and not staying the second night. He offered us a different room and we accepted. The room was just as hot, he turned off the radiator. Now being on the ground floor we couldnt leave the windows open. When we came back that evening there was only one small light working in the hall. It was really dark.Going in to the room it was as hot as we had left it, the radiator still hot. Also the doors to the rooms are NOT fire doors and the catches don't lock. My mattress was not quite as bad, but the other one was. When i told them that we hadn't slept well and about the lights not working. He did not have anything to say. Not so much as a sorry or either a discount or complementary breakfast. Nothing. It is a Best Western Hotel, we expected more. A total rip off. Do not believe the photos on here or the website, it does not reflect the state of the place.

I stayed for 2 nights whilst working in the area and despite some terrible reviews, I found it to be more than reasonable, with good access to local amenities, parking was great on site and I was able to use it for the 3 days of work, and it was clean too.

Staff were friendly and helpful, the coffees from the bar were also decent, and it was quiet at night too.

The bed was a little old and had seen better days but was fine for being comfortable, the room was a little old fashioned and the floors were a bit noisy with creaky floorboards, but it is an old pub, so I felt it was fitting with the character. I'd happily book again.
