Pros: Great location with an amazing beachfront experience, a pretty good breakfast, and the staff let us hang out in the hotel area a few hours before our check-in.

Cons: A bit old rooms, very cold inside with no possibility of making it warmer. We are from Ukraine, and the staff was trying to talk in Russian to us, literally the whole stay. We repeated several times that we don't speak Russian and we don't understand them, but they didn't care.

I felt it was important to share my feedback as my experience fell significantly short of expectations. The rooms were subpar.
The food was especially disappointing, with very little variety and flavor. Overall, it was a lacklustre experience, and honestly, I was hoping for so much more. If you want to ensure customers return, there's a lot of room for improvement in both service and quality.

Dear Owner of Citrus Hotels. I am a mother and my two children. We had a terrible situation Citrus Hikkaduwa. On the night of 30th April, 200 dollars were stolen from our bag in the room. They entered at night when we were sleeping in the room through our open balcony. 01.05 - we spent time in the hotel. Around 15:00 we discovered the theft. When we went to the reception about this outrageous incident, the manager openly laughed at us and mocked us, saying that we will not prove anything, and that it is our fault because we did not keep the money in the safe. NO, I repeat, it happened at night when we were in the room and sleeping. And this is already a deliberate entry. We went to the police, explained to them what happened, and they understood that they tried to compensate us at least with a gift to close the 22,000 rupees in the hotel account. But the manager tried to twist everything in Sinhala and make us look like fools. He even threatened my son that either we pay or we will be in trouble! We are upset and disappointed and are sure that this manager will arrange this scam of stealing from the room that night. He was not interested in investigating this incident. Now we are afraid and warning guests that at the Citrus Hotel the manager arranges thefts from the rooms and sleeps there dangerously at night. Please take steps to investigate this outrageous situation. I truly believe that your guests deserve to be protected during their holiday.

Tired, basic hotel that could do with a refresh

It's an old hotel. 50 yrs. So it's tired and needs a refurbish. Rooms are OK, but bathroom leaks water from the shower leaving puddles of water in the bathroom. Could smell urine in room 205 when using the shower so probably linked to the drainage system. Pool needs redone as several broken tiles and there were 3 people I saw who cut themselves including a member of staff and my daughter.

Restaurant and bar is very good, great choice and food options are lovely.

Staff are excellent and very friendly.

Opposite a supermarket which is handy.

So overall a really nice hotel, pretty basic but has great potential with a bit of investment.

I call this side the city view side of the hotel the forgotton section of the hotel. Prior to this I was in the ocean view room, for 10 days, all connected to the hotel with easy access to any part of the hotel.And I paid less for the room with breakfast included.For the city view rooms I paid more and extra for breakfast. To get to the main building I had to come out of the side of the hotel and walk pass the little shop and enter through the reception anytime of day or night.
I also felt that the rooms on this side of the hotel were given less attention. I had to inquire about the cleaning people that were very visible on the other side and did not see on this side. On request my room was cleaned and with a call to the house keeping the beverage supplies were brought to the room.
Given the choice I will not stay in Citrus if I had to settle for the city view rooms. All the staff were very friendly and caring.

Just basic, bare bones accommodation. One of the members of our group said it was more like a lodge than a hotel. There were rust spots around the room and fixtures, even in the kettle. The room was clean but the quality of everything belongs in a much cheaper property. the mattresses, sheets, bathrooms, shower, were all below average. The AC didn't work properly. All round, quite a disappointment. Some of the staff were very friendly and helpful, esp at reception, but that wasn't true of the staff in the restaurant and elsewhere. We even got charged for something we hadn't ordered!

The only good thing about this place was the beach and the location. If I would have known that the quality of the building and the room was that bad I would spend another $100+ just to get a clean renovated or new room. This was a guest house quality -.
Will not recommend unless your budget is max $60 per night.

Galle Cricket stay.

Over for the England cricket and it is just coming into season. Lively hotel when the Barmy Army were here and a lot quieter afterwards. It's a good hotel right on the beach and by the main road. Super swimming pool. Buffet breakfast is fine. We had a 6th floor room with a.great view of the Ocean. If you're travelling ton Hikkaduwa it's worth considering. John, Coventry, Barmy Army.

Check in experience was fantastic. Hotel is right on the beach. Turn left for some nice restaurants and surfing sea. We had a room at the back of the hotel facing road but the rooms with a sea view look good.

Good location for a relaxing stay

After having done a lot of travelling we just wanted a few days of relaxation. The hotel fulfilled our brief reasonably well. It has a good pool, and on one side of the hotel is the beach and on the other the main road of the town. Traffic can be [only a little bit] noisy and you may get woken early by the horn of the local train. This did not spoil our stay - but get a room that overlooks the pool and beach.The town is bustling, and there are a few restaurants for you to try, but we ate in the hotel; the breakfasts and dinners were good and lunch was available too. What made it a good experience for us, apart from just doing nothing, was the staff. They were extremely helpful to us, especially when we had a transport problem, and they were happy in their jobs. All were ready with a smile, and to have a laugh and a joke.

The hotel fabric was in dire need of refurbishment. It looks 'tired', but our bedroom was very clean and comfortable.

Adequate accommodations for a week

Very friendly and polite staff. Staff training needs some input, although the staff was always polite and tried to help. Bar staff were particularly slow.
Electrics need upgrading in rooms for charging up gadgets New mini fridges too.. Activities on site need clearer notifications.
We had immediate action from staff when they knew we were not happy with our room and appreciated a room with a better view..
I will recommend it with reservations.

I rated staff with 3* because I have booked room with sea view and they reserved 2 rooms in basement without any view from room. After our guide complaint and ask for new rooms they changed rooms to 2nd floor on our 2nd night onwards.
Overall nice experience.

Mold, Mildew, Mismanagement, and Missing Clothes

I had such high hopes for the Citrus. The location is perfect and the photos look very inviting. Be advised that the photos online are extremely outdated and the hotel is very rundown and full of mold. Everything is broken and dingy and mildewed. Bathrooms smell strongly of urine like they haven't been properly cleaned in years.

Be prepared to ask multiple times for anything you need; it took me hours to get the WiFi password while staff lounged around the lobby without a care in the world. The phone in my room was broken so I had to walk downstairs every time I had a request. Every time, I asked them to replace the phone. I was there for two weeks and that never happened.

There is incredibly loud poolside karaoke until the wee hours of the morning EVERY. SINGLE. NIGHT. Even if there are only one or two people in the bar, they will blast the music so loud that earplugs will not help. Do you have any idea what it's like to hear the same drunk Russian guy butcher the same Cat Stevens song over and over again, night after night? Don't do this to yourself.

Other reviews rave about the food, which makes me worry what they're eating at home. Everything is served buffet style here, and laid out for hours (in the outdoor dining room) so if you enjoy your food crawling with flies like an infomercial for international hunger relief...bon apetite.

I only received half of my clothes back from the laundry, and there was no explanation or apology. What else did I expect?

Excellent views of the beach, and very comfortable rooms. It's a large property so we found the service slightly more impersonal than nearby boutique hotels. I ordered a bottle of beer from the bar and it arrived warm, the bar tender was surprised that I considered that a problem. Eventually he brought me a bucket of ice instead of replacing it with a cold bottle.

Christmas on the beach

We stayed here at the end of our trip for Christmas. Originally we were given a small room on the ground floor close to reception. It was really noisy so we asked to change and the hotel kindly accommodated us. We had a slightly larger room with a balcony. The hotel was still quite noisy. Not because of rowdiness but just poor soundproofing. We could hear conversations in the stairwell through a gap under the door. The hotel does need updating especially in the bathrooms. The staff were friendly and the food was nice. They gave us little Christmas cakes on Christmas Eve even though we didn't attend the party. All in all a nice place to stay.

We really enjoyed our week-long stay in Hikkaduwa.
Each day at the resort started with an ample buffet breakfast which alternated dishes keeping things fresh!
When we requested a room change, the staff were able to fulfill it.
When I needed a hairdryer- a converter- matches- they were very prompt and accommodating!
I lost my water bottle by the pool and the front desk attendant left it and came to find it with me.
I was very impressed.
By the end of the trip, many of the workers knew our names and it was refreshing to be greeting genuinely by these wonderful people!
The cleaning staff were efficient- the grounds were kept clean- the location was very good, too!

I loved it to stay there! Would have liked to stay longer. I came alone and just wanted to take a rest and calm down at the beach during my whole trip. Just after I arrived in the lobby I got an icetea without asking. Unfortunately I just spent there 2 nights. Everyone was so friendly. I totally recommend the hotel.

Comfortable stay at a reasonable price

A large hotel in a busy area that still managed to keep the personal touch. Rooms were great, but overall look of hotel needed a touch up. Pool area and restaurant were very comfortable, family friendly and a great place to spend your time. Staff were friendly and attentive. Food was pretty good, but could do with more vegie options. If you want a cheap comfortable stay with nice views in the centre of the Hikkaduwa action, this is the place to stay.
A few previous reviews have mentioned loose tiles in the pool, this is because for some bizarre reason the pool was never grouted and they have started to come out... this is a typically Sri Lankan way of finishing building jobs, but still unexplainable. Not best hygienic and feel uncomfortable underfoot.

Hotel is well located on the beachfront.

On our arrival we were well greeted and made to feel welcome. My good impression soon passed when we found out that the 2nd room I had booked for my teenage children did not have twin beds as listed in my reservation. After some debate they did find us a twin room on the ground floor level, whilst we were on the 6th floor. Not ideal but nothing could be done.
The Hotel itself was quite a suprize. We had booked it because it was very well priced. The rooms themselves were very clean & spacious. Beds were very comfortable but pillows big & rock hard. Location was beachfont with easy access to snorkelling and surfing.
There are a number of beachfront cafes to eat at but we found the quality of the food in our Hotel was great.
The buffet breakfast had a massive selection.
The only fault was that the pool needs a bit of work, and the reception area could be a bit more inviting.

The first room we were put in was tiny and very dirty there was a hair in the shower, mould on the ceiling. The room we moved to was better but still wasn't very clean shaving foam on the wall all week. Breakfast terrible.

More expected for that price

We booked the Citrus Hotel because we wanted to have one really nice hotel in Sri Lanka to stay. We booked the Economy Budget Room. This was a mistake, the Superior Room was just 6 USD more expensive and would have been a lot nicer. However, we were a little bit dissappointed from the hotel as it was quite expensive for Sri Lanka and didn't have the standard we expected from it. The pool was the worst of the hotel, it looked very damaged and untidy. Moreover the water couldn't be clean as the water level was below the filter system, so no water could flow into that. The breakfast buffet and dinner buffet was really good and also eastern and not western style. The service staff was very friendly and helpful. All-in-all therefore a 4 of 5 star rating for this hotel.

Good food at Lemon Fish Al a Carte restaurant but buffet dinner options were quite expensive for mediocre selection. Breakfast was good for the price of our B&B room. Hotel itself was clean but needs a major refurbishment to fix problems; our bathroom light stopped working because of a dodgy fitting so we changed rooms (which they were really great about giving us an upgrade) and in the new room our balcony door was in very bad condition. Bent metal frame and holes in the bottom, it wouldn't close without a lot of effort! Also we found lots of little flying ants and flies in both rooms because of the holes/gaps to the balcony. The air conditioning units are effective but extremely loud! Towels (and beach towels) were provided as were some toiletries. Plug adaptors were not provided. The staff were lovely on the whole, but we did have one waiter ask us over and over to use his friends tour company that was nothing to do with the hotel, which spoilt dinner/breakfast a little. The supermarket across the road was great, as were the restaurants along the street outside. Also, Citrus Vacations organised our taxi pick up from the airport which was efficient, but it cost us $90 which is very expensive, so we organised our own return from a local company near the hotel for £37. The hotel is right on the beach which is great, and you can walk down and feed the wild sea turtles! We enjoyed our stay, but my not return to Citrus in the future.

Don't let bad reviews put you off

I booked this hotel last minute and afterwards I read a lot of bad reviews and panicked.

I shouldn't have. The hotel itself is right on the beach which you can easily access for a stroll - the sea is too dangerous to enter though.

Rooms - I booked a superior room for £20pn. It was spacious with a separate bathroom and a balcony overlooking the sea.

AC worked perfectly, clean, housekeeping came daily. There was a little rust around the balcony door but normal to find at properties near the sea due to salt air.

There's a mini bar, tea station & you get 1 litre of water FOC daily. Some amenities provided in bathroom.

Breakfast buffet really good. I opted for room only so buffet was 1000 rupees, around 30 dirhams / £5 & its worth it.

A la carte menu limited but food is good enough. Atmosphere of the restaurant is nice - open plan at the beach & they have musicians playing in the evening.

It appears the hotel has been upgraded at some point as its like there's an old part & new part joined together. We were on the new side so I have no idea if the rooms are the same condition throughout the property.

Spa - Great treatments at great prices.

Pool - view of the sea / beach. I didn't use it, but did notice them cleaning it Daily.

I think after a walk along the beach this hotel is one of the better ones in Hikkaduwa. I certainly enjoyed my stay and would recommend it. Really good deal!

A very nice beach holiday in Hikkaduwa

We had a great time! Check in was quick and smooth. Only took about 6 or 7 minutes.
The hotel staff were courteous and responsive. The breakfast spread was great and included continental and Sri Lankan food with live counters for eggs and waffles.
The fish buns were amazing! The pool was clean though a few of the small tiles were missing. The view from the beach side rooms is fantastic. Our ground floor rooms opened out to a great sea view and the beach was only about 30 meters away. The sea was quite rough and not suitable for swimming while we were there (may 10 to may 13) but the weather was great with a couple of light showers. The rooms were clean and the beds very comfortable. Wifi was a little spotty in the rooms but worked perfectly in the dining areas, lobby, poolside and lounging areas. Hotel staff responded well to specific requests for housekeeping as well as dining. The hotel is located on the beach and there are many dining options around the hotel within a few minutes walk. Prices everywhere seemed reasonable. There is a bus stop just outside the hotel from where we took a bus to Galle which is about 30 minutes away. Very nice. All in all, great value for families. We loved it.

We were excited to stay here after travelling through the rural area of Sri lanka. It was an oasis with amazing beach front. The wait staff was great for check but one of the staff is very rude. The room was sweet on the top floor but the elevator would work intermittently. We elected to take the stairs. Nice restaurant. Definitely great value for money.

Hotel Citrus Hikkaduwa is on the beach and has a great beach front area with grass and plenty of chairs with beach towels supplied.

The room we booked said it would have beach and ocean views but it looked directly onto the dining room with no other view.

Walking into the room smelled very damp like soil and the room was basically an 80s truck stop motel with a balcony. Very old and tired.

The sheets were clean at least but I would expect a lot more for the money we were paid, very poor value.

We ordered a chicken Caesar salad and a salmon and ricotta dish one day. The chicken ceasar salad had no chicken and tasted like it was 2 days old and refrigerated. The ricotta was actually chopped up processed cheese.

We would never stay here again not recommend it to anyone.

Nice close to the Beach

Despite having paid Expedia for a the cost of an extra bed for a child, this was not the case, the hotel demanded that we pay again which prevented us being checked - in promptly. After a lengthy discussion and some delay the hotel relented ...... it would appear that Expedia failed to pay the hotel for an extra bed. This also meant our room was not ready until about 3.30 pm. Poor show by Expedia!!!

Good hotel next to the beach

Our stay at the Citrus Hikkaduwa was pleasant and comfortable. The hotel is as described on the website and most definitely one of the best property around (keep in mind this is a surfer spot - lots of guesthouses and independent rooms rather than hotels). We arrived early and the staff at the reception worked hard to find us a room (and succeeded). The view on the ocean from our balcony was beautiful, the room was spacious and quite clean. It could have been cleaner, but only for things such as dust in the vents on the ceiling and a bit of mold at the bottom of the shower which also bothered me a bit (tropical climate so quite normal I guess...they could just have cleaned it). The bed was comfortable, but lacking a comforter (only a sheet), noise coming from the street (but not much at night) and key needed for electricity and the AC turns off when you leave the room - that's not good. The pool is nice, there are enough chairs for the guests to soak up the sun, the beach is nice and a short walk from all the bars (5-10 minutes). The food was very good, decently priced and so were the drinks. Overall it was a very good experience and I would recommend the hotel, it just needs a bit more attention but it is good.

Was central to shops restaurants and Tuktuk drivers who would take you anywhere you wanted to go ! Hotel staff very helpful and friendly room cleaned every day , nice pool and easy to walk to a swimming beach Would go back again !

Walk around 200ft to the right from the hotel and you'll find a great snorkeling area with numerous reef fish. If you continue around 1km you'll likely see a bunch of turtles on the beach. The reef in that area is in pretty bad shape imo either due to the 2004 tsunami &/or pollution. The hotel room itself was quite reasonable for the price.

The Staff was very courteous and helpful for the most part. The hotel is right on the beach but you cannot use it, as it is all reef. You have to walk some ways out to swim in front of another hotel. the restaurant was good. the breakfast was great, but dinner not as much. The room was clean but did not smell fresh. The room smelled mildewy. the elevator smelled bad as well. The room was very noisy; i believe the front door and the balcony door did not seal well.

Good choice in Hikkaduwa

This was a very comfortable relaxing place to stay. We had a deluxe room and it was clean, comfortable and had everything you need. The outside facilities could do with a bit of an upgrade but really everything was good. Great price offered by hotels.com and one of the better places to stay in Hikkaduwa. Surrounded by local shops and restaurants the location is good. Most hotels in SL are not of the same standard you would get elsewhere so this hotel stood out in many ways. Would recommend. Ask for lower floor room if you don't like heights as upper floors are accessed by a narrow walkway on the outside of the building.

The hotel cannot be faulted. Pool/bar/beach area perfect for relaxing to sound of the ocean. View from room/balcony overlooking the water was idillic. Food very good. Would highly recommend, especially as responsibly priced.

It is an inexpensive 3 star hotel in an eexcellent location besides the sea with a great swimming pool and lovely staff. Many rooms suffer road noise or poor location. They are clean, nicebalcony views but basic although functional. Breakfast fine, bar prices good and i would stay again.

Great budget hotel with 5 star treatment pop beach

Awesome time at the hotel, the pool and the beach... Anita (a non-sri lankan working there..) helped us out with renting a taxi (which isn't part of the hotel deal... she didn't have to but she did. sweet of her) Free wifi near the lobby... awesome pool warm till 7pm... the corals and sea life at your feet just a stones throw away from the hotel... wow. some good music in the evening... awesome privacy... overall an unforgettable experience. thanks citrus.

Nice Place with a perfect location

We stayed for 6 nights , and our room was nice with amazing ocean view . the break fast was good enough to relay on . the reception staff was very nice and helpful , and so was the cleaning/room service staff . But the waiters at the restaurant should learn how to keep enough distance from women , I have drawn the attention of one of them to that , but he repeated to come close to my gf 5 min after , seems like he is frustrated . The reception staff helped us planning many tours and arranged driver/guide . the beach is beautiful and quite but you cant swim in ( there is a near by beach for swimming), the pool is ok . the hotel area is full of options ( transportation , restaurants , bars , massage centers , and even textile shops ). as I see , Hikkaduwa is the best place in SL an Citrus is the right place to stay in Hikkaduwa .

One of the best hotel in Hikkaduwa

Good hotel by Hikkaduwa standards and it has all the comforts you would expect from an international hotel, and probably one of the better hotels in Hikkaduwa, though for the price you might expect more during high season. One or two problems, Internet doesn't work despite promises to fix it and if you need access then you have to go to the lobby and fight for bandwidth. They also have the router in an office behind the reception desk so the signal is very weak. Staff ont he reception desk don't speak very good English and so service there is a bit confused and slow. Restaurant is typical hotel, ok but uninspiring.

We loved our stay at Citrus Hikkaduwa. The staff were wonderful and always keen to help. The hotel itself was lovely and so was our room! We had a beautiful view of the pool and the sea. Its also in a great location, right by the beach and close to shops, bars, restaurants, etc. We cannot fault our stay at Citrus Hikkaduwa and will definitely be staying there again. We strongly recommend that others stay there too!!

The hotel was amazing but the staff members were racist towards me as I was of British indian origin... The staff would not serve me as well as the rest of the guests during breakfast I had to ask three different staff members to get tea whereas the other guests were served efficiently and were seated appropriately. Additionally at the poolside I was not offered towel for the sunbeds and was treated in a different manner to the rest of the guests which was rather frustrating! But the hotel is the best on the beach. Just diasapointed with their prejudgment

Clean hotel with a great view of the beach

A quaint lil place that opens out to the beach, Citrus Hikkaduwa is a lovely hotel with great service. With simple, clean rooms this place offers a relaxed atmosphere to holidayers. The buffet breakfast and service staff are both good. Couple of points for improvement would be to offer outgoing call facility from the rooms (right now you will have to go to the busy reception to make a call). Introduction of room service would also add a nice touch. Overall, this a great getaway hotel which has a spa, swimming pool and al fresco restaurants that open to the beach.

Avoid if you can..They only care about tour groups

We stayed at Citrus for 3 nights over NYE. The first room we were given was disgusting.. No other words for it. The smell of cigarettes was overpowering, the room was tiny, everything old and well past prime, the window opened directly onto the main restaurant (literally 2 meters between the balcony and the buffet with people sitting down to eat). All of this we waited in the lobby for \"10 minutes\".. 2 hours later with no communication from staff out ro was ready. We later found out that this room was only normally used for staff quarters, which we discovered at 1 am when a chef banged on our door looking for his staff. We asked to be moved immediately but they told us they were fully booked that night. We would have gone elsewhere and given up the money but everything in Hilkaduwa was booked out. They did move us grudgingly the next day, the first receptionist told us we had to wait and then another magically found a prepared room immediately.. Very poorly managed from the get go. The second room was fine but nothing special. Needs an update and a lot of training of front desk staff. The housekeeper was very nice and waiters ok.
