Hi, you had to change our hotel to the Queens Hotel as the Royal beach couldn't book us due to unforeseen circumstances whatever that means, however the Queens Hotel and staff were excellent, got a welcome pack for the dog, and they get 11/10, so cant comment or review the Royal beach

A very enjoyable stay

The hotel is not modern but was clean and the staff were some of the most pleasant we have found anywhere, much better than many of the more expensive \"wan-a-be\" hotels in the UK. The decor is a little bit tired in places and the plumbing in our room was \"interesting\" but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The room was quite large and the sea view was great, to be able to watch ships coming and going and to hear the waves at night was what we stayed here for and we were not disappointed. Again i must say the staff were excellent

bed bugs share your bed

Was awaken just after 4 in the morning with bed bugs crawling over me and the bed. We were moved to another room but obviously didn’t feel clean enough to be able to sleep. Had no alternative to stay as was visiting a sick relative and hotel was the closest. I have been offered a refund but I’m still waiting after a week!

We arrived at 9pm
We’re advised no food available from the restaurant and no bar food. We asked if we could order a take away and eat in the bar - were told a stern “no we do not allow food from outside”…..we would have gladly ordered several bottles of wine from the bar so the hotel list out completely. We had to walk to a pub along from the hotel. We will not be returning. Hotel was very poor condition and service was appalling. I’m also very disappointed to see that hotels.com rate of £148 when the rack rate displayed at the hotel was £95. Why have I been charged £148 from Hotels.com? I am a loyal client! This is very concerning the difference in room rate. Please explain?

The receptionist Hannah was extremely helpful.
The building is old and tired but the customer service was excellent.
I did feel that the staff in the restaurant could have served the breakfast from the buffet to reduce the amount of guests handling the serving utensils rather than standing in the corner chatting.
Breakfast was very good with a very good selection of hot and cold food.
Location was excellent just across the road from the South Pier
The Number 23 bus to and from Portsmouth is near to the hotel.

Hotel needs a re-vamp as it's outdated but it is on the beachfront and it was clean and comfortable. Windows need cleaning as paid for sea view but windows were dirty. Very large room with a plug in fan not air con and unable to open windows but nice comfy big bed. Pillows too high for me and no alternative in the wardrobe. Coffee and tea making facilities and biscuits provided also decent toiletries in the large bathroom. We arrived late afternoon so no parking left and had to pay £12 to park on the street. Bars and restaurants are a 15-20 minute walk away. Staff on front desk very friendly and polite.

Fantastic position for the area and considering it’s age they have maintained it very well indeed. Great hotel with a nice charm about it and a very interesting history. Worth every penny and we love it

I had a very unpleasant sleep at Royal Beach and in the morning I found out why - BED BUGS. According to the General Manager they are prevalent in all Hotels but this is the first time I have come across them in the UK. The GM Chris Gilmore promised me a refund but some 3 weeks later I have not received it. Wont be staying at The Royal Beach again

Room looked onto a building site - work started at 8am sharp every morning with a huge amount of noise. One morning movement on the building site started at 6.40am. My windowsill was flaky and filthy. The net curtains were definitely in need of a wash.
The loo seat was loose and sliding around when you sat on it (quickly changed well done)
One day a sheet of paper was left by housekeeping saying please stay in your room tonight from 10.45pm to 5am for cleaning of the carpets!
The one lift was very slow because the builders on floors 2 and 1 kept using it. What a mess you could see when the lift doors opened on floor 1 in error.

Enormous room overlooking the beach and pier. With a bit of redecoration the room would be excellent. Even so, the room is fine as it is with a king size bed, settee and table with two chairs. Recommended.

Not the room we booked!

Although staff were friendly and helpful and generally the hotel was clean the room we booked wasn’t the room we got. We were put in a back small double tired bedroom with a small window facing another wall complete with scaffolding, the room we booked should have be sea view with Queen bed.They weren’t able to change for us as they were full. They did knock off drinks charge however as our room couldn’t be changed. I’m not sure whether the problem was with Hotels.com who we booked with or the hotel itself.

Great for location, looks and historical interest. They have a small parking area which we managed to get parked daily but it was stressful not knowing if you were going to get a space. Food superb, service great. Bar manager, Sandy was very helpful and chatty.

Naturally the hotel is due a makeover from its age, however the rooms are more than for for purpose and the hotel is very clean. The service and the staff are 100%, nothing was too much trouble and they certainly were top of the score board.

The location of the hotel was ideal and the surrounding views were lovely. The hotel was clean but tired looking. The fire alarm went off in our room at 8.40am on Friday morning, wasn’t happy about this. A fault with their system but only in our room. Building works going on outside that wasn’t nice either.

Pleasant stay in June

The room was clean and a decent 3* standard, although the Victorian plumbing is showing its age a bit. COVID-19 measures meant that room cleaning is only between stays, with replenishments for coffee etc on request. The staff were very helpful and friendly. My one real criticism was the bar - prices are similar to those in an upscale bar in the town centre, but the drinks quality and atmosphere don't match. A vodka and orange was very small and used orange juice out of a carton. This is fine when you're charging a low price, but with a beer the round for two came to almost £10 - comparable to smart independent bars in the area with far nicer decor / atmosphere / music etc. This sort of hotel bar should either be cheap or high quality - but this one is neither and it feels like poor value - we drank elsewhere on other nights.

The location is excellent and within short walking distance of the sea. A good bus service takes you into Southsea, which has some great restaurants. Portsmouth centre and the Isle of Wight are also easily accessible.

Dog friendly which is vital for us and our 2 doggos
All staff were very friendly and we had lovely meal on Saturday evening in the bar the man on duty there was on his own and did a remarkable job as it was busy
He was from Yorkshire but I didn’t get a name
He deserves special mention

Stayed at this hotel as a stop off but very pleased to have found it. Staff were amazingly friendly and welcoming. Location was good although parking is a little limited.

Room was spotlessly clean and amazingly had lights. Most hotels have mood lights but this one had really good bright lights so easy to read, put on make up, feel comfortable in the room. Bed was comfy.

From checking in to leaving the following day I can't thank the staff enough.
My daughter and I booked the night away for her birthday, the hotel staff went above and beyond. From upgrading our room to a sea view, to the towels and banner decorating the room.
Staff were so friendly, helping sort out a parking spot even though the parking lot was full. We would throughly recommend this hotel. Clean rooms, tidy hotel we loved it

I booked this hotel for proximity to my son's uni digs, while helping him move in.

The hotel has seen better days. While clean and well maintained, the decor is original 1980's and not up to the standards one would expect. While most of this is cosmetic, there are also limitations, including:

1. A tiny car park. There is not enough space for even half the residents. While I'm sure if you booked direct, they'd point this out, booking through Expedia does not make clear the first-come-first served nature of parking. On top of that, there is a hard (180cm?) height restriction, also not mentioned, so I had to remove the roof rack to get into the car park.
2. While the bathroom is (unnecessarily) large, the 1970's tiling is matched only by the poor water pressure and archaic, painfully slow-flushing toilet.

The in-room facilities are not terrible (32\" flat screen, kettle, small wardrobe, while not terrible, are only just on par with the competition at the low budget-end (other budget chain hotels are much better in this respect and cost the same).

There are positives. Staff are keen to overcome any issues you have. The room size for even the basic room is large, so you won't be constantly tripping over your travel companion. Additionally, they have put in place great controls around COVID-19, including distance guides, restrictions in narrow corridors and elevators, and hand gel almost everywhere. Overall, OK, but not great. Would prefer a chain.

The bar area was crammed so left well alone. Little coop next door so bought our own drinks for our room. On the bonus side you are right on the pier.
Parking... Get there early or risk parking on the road.

Now as you can guess. Typical outdated but at least you can get out bothsides of the bed.
Downside
Walls and doors are not sound proofed. Got woken up at 3 am during a fight between residents put a spoiler on what was an otherwise not overly terrible best western stay...

Rooms were spacious and clean, however very dated and extremely hot to the point it was hard to sleep. Luckily I called reception for an iron and although I didn’t receive one, I did end up with a fan sent to the room. There was then a fire alarm at about 2am in the morning. Didn’t even realise it was a fire alarm as it was fairly quiet and sounded from corridors not the room so thought initially it was another building. Followed the signs to the exit and waited outside the back of the building, where there were no staff and everyone was confused surrounded by fire engines. Seems most had exited from the front of the building but no staff came to the back, revision of fire safety procedures is definitely needed.
Overall, okay for a cheap nights stay for one night in very good location but cannot understand why this hotel does not invest in refurbishing the rooms (decor from before I was born). Poor fire safety, lucky it was only a minor fire.

The service on reception and restaurant/bar is a little slow but i guess that's a consequence of Covid19 restrictions. The food is unpredictable. I had 1 delicious breakfast and 1 very basic breakfast. I also had a salad for dinner which was 90% lettuce. It cost £10 and came with no bread so i had to order separately sweet potato fries (they were delicious!)

The staff are helpful disability aware (I am blind and stayed with my guide dog) and the facilities and room well maintained, pleasant and roomy. It was well placed for buses into the centre of Portsmouth, Gunwharf and hovercraft or ferry to the I o Wight. The promenade is directly opposite and the common, castle, D Day Museum and Sealife centre a gentle stroll away.

Enjoyed our stay but was let down by house keeping,towel taken away and not replaced on day two ,bed not made and sugar biscuits not replenished on day three .also when we checked out no curtesy show .on arrival We where made to feel welcome .

Lovely time

The stay was good and the location suited us with nice walks along the coastal shore with plenty of very good eating places.

The property is tired and dated, but the staff are very friendly and go above and beyond to help you. A good refurbishment would not go a miss though.

My stay at the Royal Beach started with a Warm welcome - just the job on a wet and cold winter's night, and it got better from there - the view on the next morning was amazing and the breakfast was also great - THANKS!

Good location on the seafront and handy for the early ferry to France. Parking is a bit of a problem especially on a Saturday night.
