We stayed in a suite and it was a grand room. The hotel is pretty central and walking distance from most touristy spots. It has its own beautiful campus with 5 other 5 star hotels along with beautiful gardens around. The buildings really look grand and from an different era. Our room was comfortable, spacious and with good amenities and comforts. Staff is friendly and helpful. Recommended while in Xian.

Very helpful front desk staff and courteous lobby personnel. Large comfortable bed. The room cleaning staff also do a great job. There is complimentary access to a swimming pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. The breakfast selection is large and of excellent quality.

The hotel was very good and I would generally recommend to anyone. However, if you stay, you should know that the hotel does not have a pool of its own, despite how it appears on the website. Instead, you have full access to the pool and spa at the Sofitel which is in the same complex. To reach the pool you do need to leave the Mercure, walk about 100 yards up a quiet road and access the Sofitel we did not know this when we booked and equally, did not have a problem with it when we realised. However, if you are looking for the pool and spa,to be in the same building, this might not be the hotel for you. Important to add here, the hotel staff did give us a free room upgrade. Our room was very comfortable and had one of the biggest beds I’ve ever seen (greater than super king). The Wi-Fi also did not work and no one we spoke to managed to get it to work either.

Maybe I am just being mean for not giving this property a five star. The porperty is in a very good condition, not as close to the touristic areas within the city wall. Receptionists do not speak very good english but they did their very best to help me especially when I was contacting my Didi driver for my pick-up. I would definitely stay in this property again though.

Nice hotel, but not for me

Nice hotel, but not something I’ll recommend to the elderly or if you’re looking for a lively environment. The hotel is within a compound of 3 different hotels, not easily accessible. My immediate feedback:

1) Secluded location
2) Long building, with breakfast in one end. So imagine if you’re staying at the other end of the hotel.
3) All the facilities like gym n swimming pool are not within the building. You’ll need to walk about 8min outdoors to Sofitel hotel to use the facilities.
4) Room is dated. The standard Queen size room is very small. I upgraded the room, as the original room felt uncomfortable.
5) Shower room floor is very slippery. I fell twice during my stay.
6) There’s constructions behind the hotel, which lasted until almost mid night.
7) Most of the staff didn’t smile. There’s that unwelcoming feeling each time I stepped into the hotel.
8) It’s important to pin the hotel correctly as there’s only one entrance. My cab dropped me off at the back gate and I had to walk 20min with my luggage in order to reach the hotel.

The hotel is not only outdated but decadent. Installations, rooms, facilities, appliances, breakfast and almost everything are not even close to a grand mercure standard.
One day, in the middle of the night there was a power shortage in our room (electrical installation malfunction) and the emergency light was lit on our faces making it necessary to call maintenance before morning and wait for repairs.
It has haf its glory days but today couldn't be classified anything above 3 stars.
On the positive side the bed was very good and comfortable.

The building and the room has the old english theme which is very unique. i totally understand if the hotel management want to keep to the theme but some refurbishments are needed as the room look worn out i.e bathroom tiles, the cabinets, carpets. Overall, the room was clean and bed was comfortable.

When we arrived at 10pm we were greeted by a room upgrade with a welcome cake for our anniversary: simply magnificent: brilliant location, staff excellent all the time, impossible to rate other than as 10/10. Only one small item to comment on: more a cultural difference than anything: the fridge was not cold, probably because the locals like warm drinks including beer. However, plenty of ice freely available on request. In summary, we loved it.

The hotel and service is beyond great! Very quiet and clean. They offer a five star breakfast buffet that includes both local and International food options. Our family enjoys the food and service a lot during our stay. The hotel room is spacious and beautiful. We will definitely book the hotel again when we visit XI’An next time!

I think this was the best stay in the whole China trip for me. I enjoyed the place, shower & bath, comfortable bed, breakfast, and hospitality staff. The location was a bit distanced from the station but taxi makes a big difference to come back here. I wish Japanese restaurant was open but I enjoyed the Chinese restaurant at Sofitel as well.

Grand Mercury is a beautiful old world hotel with dark wooden decor in the rooms. We checked in easilly. I was a little disappointed to find out that all the restaurants and swimming pool were not in this hotel, they were within a complex of hotels and you had to cross the grounds to access the other hotels facilities. Eg the Italian restaurant in one restaurant and the bar and pool within the Sofitel which wasn’t great in depths of winter. The main negative therefore isn’t about this hotel but the changing rooms at Sofitel swimming pool. At first its very elegant, but when you enter female changing rooms it’s like a 1980s council provided changing room. Nowhere to hang your towel while you shower, no costume dryer, dilapidated fixtures with wallpaper mouldy and peeling. However my husband advises me the men’s was plush, had its own hot tub, sauna and massage beds. It makes one wonder about the type of establishment it is and the services provided, clearly more geared towards male travellers

We did not like that there was not a restaurant onsite except for breakfast, but the breakfast was excellent and they did have evening room service. I am in a wheelchair and there was a ramp into the hotel and easy access to the restaurant. The staff was fabulous, the room was wonderful and it is central if you are a walker.

Nice, but small rooms (we had a queen).
No restaurant in this hotel - except a breakfast buffet for extra $.
There are restaurants in the Renmin Square complex which has multiple hotels grouped together. Pleasant enclave.

Check In had 5 persosn from which 2 didnt do anything, even with people in line.
Elite Desk is for everyone, and not only Elite Accor Members.
Requested for a taxi to take us to the train station at 1:30, the front desk person ordered it when he saw me, taxi arrived at 1:55. The location is very good, the hotel needs a make up.
Their biggest issue is their personnel, they need an URGENT, training.

The hotel is very pleasant, located in the quiet renmin square and well furnished. Staff are very helpful, breakfast is good. Room was cosy and comfortable, showing signs of age but lots of character, though a bit cold, with no thermostat to change it (weather outside was hot). TV reception was bad. Overall a very pleasant stay.

The hotel building itself is an heritage building. It's strategically located. There are plenty of shopping spots nearby the hotel. The nearest ones - SuNing is just about 400m away and the nearest bus stop is just 300m away. The staff are friendly and attentive. The janitor will arrange our toiletries in an orderly manner everyday (maybe it's too messy for her :D). I would choose to stay here again if I had the chance to visit Xi'An.

We loved our stay at the Grand Mercure on Renmin Square. Our only regret was that it was just 1 night. We took a sleeper train from Beijing to Xi'an. The train station is just blocks away from the Grand Mercure. As you exit the train station, the taxi pickups are on your right, and you would just walk straight, go under the wall and a few more blocks bring you to Renmin Square. The Sofitel is on the corner, you turn right, go through a gated entrance, and walk around the square until you get to it. We grabbed a taxi from the train station. He claimed he didn't know where the Grand Mercure was and wouldn't call anyone. He knew where the Sofitel was, so we had him take us there and they kindly directed him around the corner. No big deal. Only 20 RMB. Have the name printed in Chinese so you can just hand them that.
We walked back to the train station and caught the tour bus to the Terra Cotta warriors. Do your research so you know what bus to get on. The buses are on your right as you are facing the train station.
The next day, we walked to the wall and walked around on top of the wall that surrounds the old part of the city.
The Grand Mercure was beautiful and clean. We had a king sized bed that was soft. The breakfast was the best we have ever had in China. It was so conveniently located for easy walking to the train station and the wall. I would and will definitely recommend this place to future travelers who want to see the warriors and walk the old wall.

Whether it was the very calm and helpful front desk to the gorgeous rooms I was very impressed with my stay at the Grand Mecure. The front desk knew enough English to thoroughly help me, and with multiple restaurants and a great breakfast buffet it’s hard to find something not likeable to be honest. Very well done!

It’s a lovely hotel, very centrally located. The train station, the drum tower, the bell tower and the Muslim quarter are all about 20 minutes away.
The hotel is very clean and comfortable. It’s located in a compound with the Sofitel so there’s several bars and restaurants to choose from.

We spent two nights here and to our pleasant surprise were upgraded to a suite!
Staff were pleasant and knowledgeable about recommending tour options for the must-see terracotta warriors. Allow for at least a half day for this. There are several restaurants in the hotel compound, as well as a spa for a quick pedi! Within walking distance is the Muslim Street which is a great lunch spot with an abundance of food options. The menus do not have translation but don't be afraid to point out a dish that looks good and ask where it is on the menu. There are apps that will translate your menu when you take a picture. Just remember that you will need a vpn to access any google apps while in China. The locals are genuinely helpful and will be amused that you chose to eat locally. Picking the most popular spot ensures good food quality. Also a treat are the freshly roasted chestnuts from the street vendors! Apples were in season when we visited and were delicious! We rented bikes and toured the city wall which gives you a bird's eye view of the old city. Finishing off our trip to Xi'an was the must see Big Wild Goose Pagoda.

For the price we paid, this hotel was excellent, and the staff couldn't do enough for us, including upgrading our room when we arrived at 1am, as our first room was a smoking room and they organised a wonderful trip for us. However, the hotel is a bit tired, both style and function wise. The bedding and towels have a cooking fat smell to them, the carpets are grubby in places, and the bathrooms have cracks and mould in the grout.

Beyond the Façade, It’s a Dated & Broken Hotel

This hotel needs a ton of work:

* key card reader didn’t work
* carpet was dirty
* shower leaked
* old school shower curtain
* dated interior
* cramped room
* dark
* lighting system confusing
* safe handle broken

I would never stay here again. It is past it’s prime. When we went to us the safe, we found the decorative bed runner and pillows that someone clearly removed. I am guessing someone rented the room, saw, the condition and left. The front desk then did not have someone check and reset the room. This says a lot about their management practices.

All this, and my “great” hotels.com rate was 15 dollars more than every other site was offering it for that night on the day of. It was beyond dissapointing.

To the management team who will likely offer some vague apology to me as if I am some isolated crank and not the frequent traveler I am with very forgiving standards, I say just do your job.

The property is old and the room is dark even with curtains drawn and all lights turned on. I received a call in my room at 3am and the caller asked me to open my door as I ordered a massage???!!! I told off the reception staff, hung up and went back to sleep. When I complained to the front desk the next day, the manager was defensive and said no such call was made from the reception desk. Does he think all guests are fools? Who else can call direct to the room at 3am except the reception desk? I will NEVER stay there again and will seriously consider if I ever want to stay at another Accor property in future for business or holiday.

The hotel staff was great. I mostly interacted with them in Chinese, but they seemed to always have English speakers at the desk. They loaned me an umbrella when it started to rain, and called cabs for us. The hotel is a little older and showing signs of wear, but the room was clean and the bed was very comfortable. My only complaint is that the wifi was pretty bad here and the hotel seemed to block our VPN.

There’s a mosquito inside the room that disturbed our sleep on our first night. The room itself is actually comfortable to sleep in, the bed and the temperature is good. I would say the hotel staff is helpful as well. However, do remember to lock your money, I suspect, somebody stole a couple of bank notes from me.
The room could be a lot better and feel cleaner if the water from the shower doesn’t wet the washroom floor. It’s like flooding every time we come out from the shower.
It is indeed walkable to Bell Tower but I guess after walking there and drum tower and Muslim quarter, you legs will be too tired to walk back to the hotel.
We walked to Xi’an train station as well and take a bus from there to go to terracotta warrior. It’s doable. But don’t expect everything is short walking distance. Expect 30mins walk to train station or bell tower. China is big, one block is long.

Great location and a nice hotel. I chose the Grand Mercure because it looked as nice as the Sofitel (which I’ve stayed in before) but was cheaper. Although the Sofitel was nicer, the Grand Mercure was a great value. The friendliness of the staff and customer service was exceptional. My only complaint was that the AC never cooled the room below 22 Celsius despite setting it lower. I would stay here again though.

Hotel central and in very nice peaceful parklike .

Being able to use facilities in adjoining Accor hotels ie pool, resturants etc was good. Decor in the Grand Mercure showed it as being one of the oldest of the group, but very clean. Staff were all excellent and very helpful both at Grand Mercure and Sofitel. Ava at breakfast and Karl, Justin and Lee at Sofitel especially deserve a mention.

The staff really made this hotel stay pleasant. The room was comfortable and large and the bathroom as well. Breakfast was a bit shabby (cold food and crowded) and the maintenance of the building was the main let-down. For example, in our non-smoking room, the curtains had not been sufficiently cleaned since the last person smoked there. The pool area at the adjoining Sofitel (which Grand Mercure guests can use) was shabby and in dire need of some maintenance. Overall, a lovely place to stay, but don't be too expecting of the international standards that the Accor brand would suggest.

This hotel is located on a quiet square set back off the road and is set in lovely grounds along with several other hotels owned by the same group. We didn't find not too many restaurants in the local area but there are several restaurants available within the four hotels which although a bit pricy all served very good food in a lovely setting.

Deceptive advertising & sub-standard condition

I ordered a non smoking suite which was advertised as two bedrooms, living and dining room.

First, let's just put aside the four ashtrays in the room and the stench.

The room was NOT two bedrooms. it was one.
There was NO dining room.
There was NO second bed.
So instead of having my child in another room, they were in a trundle bed in our room... which I had to pay an extra $300 for.

Remarkably, that bed was more comfortable than the one on the room which read one of the lumpiest I've ever experienced.

housekeeping appears to be something they don't bother with.. dirty carpets, sporadic cleaning of the room for the five days we were there.

very much below the standard set by the brand.

One of the best by any standard

I really enjoyed my stay. The cozyness of the Renmin square extended to my room! There us a bedside panel that you use to control temperature and lights. The rooms have true block out curtains.

I forgot to mention that they clean your room several times a day depending on your needs.

A bit of old.

This hotel is located at the center of Xi'an city. You can take a taxi to most attraction sites for less than 20RMB. We got free breakfast that provided both Chinese and western food. We were also able to use the pool/spa in adjacent Sofitel. The only complain we had was that the air conditioner did not work well in the hot summer days.

Wonderful Hotel, great staff.

Lovely hotel in complex with Sofitel and Peoples Grand.

20 - 30 minute walk to Bell Tower. Easy to walk to city wall. Xian is lovely. Metro stations within 15 - 20 minute walks in two directions. Lots of shops nearby (10 minutes walk).

HOB, BBC News, CNN English language tv channels.

Safe location. Friendly staff - especially Angela on reception. She even remembered my room number and name when I approached reception for something. Made you feel valued as a customer.

Xian itself is lovely with really friendly people and loads to see. One of best hotels I've stayed in around the world - good value for money.

Only real issue mentioned by others is the room is a little dark. Partly due to the net curtains and partly low wattage light bulbs. But this is really minor.

Comfortable stay in serene compound

I like it that the cluster of Accor hotels are in a compound, with high security (since did hear about some security issues in city). Also service from service staff all over the hotel was tops! I get ample info on wifi downtime (only after midnight maintenance) and free upgrade of breakfast at Sofitel as hotel restaurant was closed. Strongly recommend this hotel!

Hotel is 15mins walk to the nearest city gate, and also on the way to bell tower in city wall centre.

Good hotel.

Although a little out of the way in a quiet area this was still a good hotel to stay at. Rooms spacious and comfy. Staff were very helpful and organised private transport to terracotta soldiers and guide for the day. Also helpful with airport transfer. Great buffet breakfast.

Convinient and clean hotel - a little outdated.

Our hotel experience was good. The hotel compound is beautiful, but the hotel can definitely be updated. On 2 of the 3 rooms we had the night tables did not work, and the rooms are tight. However, it was clean, perfect location and staff is friendly.

Top hotel! Top service!

Great hotel and the staff was super helpful! Leo the reception manager helped us a lot during our stay! The hotel grounds are beautiful, the room is very comfortable and the pool and Jacuzzi in the Sofitel location at a plus! I recommend this hotel when you visit Xi'an. Location is great :) Thanks to all the Mercure staff for making our stay a great one!

The hotel look very good at the lobby, but the room is bit small and old, the bed is not comfortable for two people
