Our second stay in Caen but this was our first stay here, the staff were very friendly and helpful the gentleman who was on bar and restaurant duty in the evening Was great we thought he was English but it turned out he was French and local but spoke English extremely well. Nice evening meal.

I booked this property as it was reasonable priced and centrally located. There were various restaurants within walking distance. The staff were extremely helpful. The communal areas looked a little aged although the room was clean, tidy and comfortable. The continental breakfast was satisfactory with free refills of juice / coffee. On the whole a pleasant stay.

Stay is alright, but the room bathroom is a bit squeeze. Need to get in and out carefully. Plus there are power cut in the middle of the night. Other then that, the hotel staff are very helpful and friendly. I would recommand for a short stay.

Great Stay!

This was a great stay! We stayed in the family suites upstairs. After a long day of driving the coast of Normandy, it was the perfect place to lay our heads. Quiet, clean, comfortable. Staff was friendly and breakfast was great in the morning.

Value for money i would say yes, the fact they have permanent residents up stairs with kids running up and down corridors and being noisy doesnt help for a relaxing rest and there clutter makes a bit of a eye sore, bikes toys and rubbish. I was also told i would be able to get a evening meal, but then found in the evening kitchen would not be open as told on arrival. Great walking distance to war museum

Quirky Crocus

A quirky little hotel with friendly staff and a “care about the community” feel to it. The food and drinks were good and we spent a happy night there.

The rooms albeit dark were clean and comfortable. The decor was different which added to the quirkiness of the hotel. I liked it! More recently I’ve stayed at a luxury hotel and to be honest I felt more welcomed at the Hotel Crocus. This tells me that price and fancy rooms are not always the best option.

The staff here were amazing. Friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. They really made this place what it is.

As an electric vehicle driver, I was delighted to see three EV Charge points on site.

Breakfast was very good with a range of continental and cooked offerings. The hotel also does dinner, I believe, but we didn't use the restaurant so can't really comment apart from saying that the menu looked very good.

Now for the room itself..... Oh dear! This really let the hotel down, badly. In these days of Covid, it was advertised as 'deep cleaned'. There was a lot of dust and, what appeared to be, someone else's pubic hair on the bathroom wall.

The bed was fairly comfortable but the tiny bathroom really wasn't up to standard for any hotel. It's badly lit and when you pull close the dark brown shower curtain, you're showering in the dark. It was like something you'd expect to see from the 70's bed and breakfast establishment.

We chose this hotel due to its location to the D Day beaches. It's located about 10 min drive from Caen Centre and was easy to find. We also visited the football at SM Caen which was an easy 10 minute drive away.

We were checked in by Fabien who was very friendly and spoke excellent English. Fabien was on everyday we were there and was always happy to chat and answer any questions we had (my partner had alot!!) Fabien also makes great cappuccinos!

The breakfast was fine, small hot selection and pastries. More than enough to set us up for the day. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening and the bar area was fine.

The room was clean and a decent size for a short stay. The bathroom was a little small but was OK for our needs.

Carpark is a decent size, we had no issues parking although one night we were late back and grabbed the last spot.

All in all a great hotel with very friendly staff in a great location. Wouldn't hesitate to stay again

This was our favourite Hotel of the whole trip. The Hotelier spoke excellent English and was very easy to speak to in French or English. This is an excellent example of how to run a Hotel with smiles from all of the staff and very helpful. The room was quiet and a decent size and the bathroom was superb with a large bath to have a soak in after waking the D Day beaches. The location is excellent for all of the Normandy landings sites, Bayeux and the price was very good. Recommend this Hotel. The Continental Breakfast was excellent and good value.

A nice hotel close to the Caen Memorial

It is a nice hotel positioned 900m from the Caen Memorial. It is close to a good vet and a covid testing centre, both of which we used. There is also a large supermarket close by. The compact room was downstairs, wheelchair friendly, clean and comfortable. We would’ve liked a ceiling fan, this room was extremely hot. Tea making facilities would also have been appreciated. The staff here are very friendly and helpful and speak English. We had delicious pizza in the restaurant. There is undercover seating outside with Perspex walls which we wished were no smoking as it got very smoky while we were eating.

Central to Normandy sights

Make sure not to chose an economy room, go for the next one above, and you will have a comfortable enough room. Good location if you want to be central to most of the D Day sights mixed in with the Bayeux Tapestry, William the Conqueror s resting place and Caen Castle. Food at hotel is good, God parking on site too, wi fi OK. Avoid at all costs any of the restaurants nearby, they are truly awful. The resteraunts near Caen Castle are superb.

We took advantage of the Brittany Ferries special offer of a day trip (overnight) to France. We visited Caen, for a pre Brexit shopping trip.
The hotel suited our needs for an inexpensive dinner and overnight accommodation. Easy to find and convenient for supermarkets and ferry port..

Convenient for Caen and the Channel ferry

The hotel is just off the Blvd Peripherique, making it pretty convenient both for the Channel ferries, and the Caen area, including the Normandy battlefields.
Despite a rather psychedelic style of decor, the rooms were clean and reasonably comfortable. The restaurant was excellent the one night we used it, breakfast was what you’d expect in sny French hotel.

The hotel was in a commercial area-1 needs a car.
We stayed for 1 night so it was ok.Initially the receptionist gave us 2 single beds despite the room was with a double bed,but then was kind enough to change it with a double bed.
The room was quite small,but ok for a night.
We were on the ground floor where the people from neighbour rooms were making noise in the corridor and the corridor looked like a maze.
Otherwise,overall-all was fine for a 2 star hotel.

Great hotel to stay in if you have just arrived at the port of Caen/Ouistreham on the late ferry and don't want to drive off into the night. Easy to find and a very pleasent receptionist on arrival who made things easy.
The Hotel was in festive mode the entrance was welcoming and clean a small bar to one side. Lots of parking. The hotel on the whole is a bit dated but quirky but made no difference to our stay. the rooms were very clean ,warm and comfortable. Good hot showers and breakfast in the morning for an extra 8euros was adequate. On ther whole a good bargain hotel to stay at for the night.

Very disappointing hotel

This hotel is economical if there are two sharing a room but not worth the money when paying full price. English is very much a second language on reception. The rooms are very basic and the corridor to your room is normally what would be in the basement with beds hidden behind curtains etc. Lights are on a system where they go on as you walk through the corridor and turn off immediately you are past a light. The room was quite cool - cold on arrival - because the window was open. Next day the room was again cold when I went back to it because again the window had been left open for some reason. There was a double bed but only 3 pillows. Floor not carpeted. The only good point was the breakfast. I chose to stay there because I had had breakfast last year but not stayed. I had made a reservation for a meal on the Thursday night - they couldn't find the reservation - eventually they discovered a request for information about the menu but we had been in touch since then to make a reservation. The second room was a twin room - this was not what had been booked. Expedia checked this the night before I went to France and told me it was all ok. Basic is the only word I could use.

Quite obvious the hotel photo was taken before it was turned into an industrial site .Unfortunately it was used for the poor immigrants at the back of the hotel. At night a bit creepy .
After a long journey we wanted a meal but was told that the restaurant doesn't open on a weekend. Then had to find a restaurant .
Asked for an early morning call 0600 .We had a ferry to catch . Young student on the desk had no idea how to facilitate this, had to call a friend. luckily we were up in time the early call eventually came at 0630 just as we were leaving.
The worrying aspect of this hotel is that it is locked up at night. All doors?? to get out we had to shout and bang on the doors, eventually a security guard came to let us out of the fire exit which was blocked by many pushchairs. In an event of a fire this would be catastrophic also the corridor lights only came on when there was movement.

Pleasant hotel. Easy access from the Périphérique

I use this hotel when arriving at Caen/Ouistreham on the afternoon sailing. It's very easy to find; leave the périphérique west at the Caen Memorial and it's straight ahead on the second roundabout. Unlike many of the hotels, it is still staffed at that time of night. The staff are always very pleasant, the rooms are clean and comfortable. The ensuite facilities are quite adequate. There's plenty of safe parking. The breakfasts are basic but I'm not a big breakfast eater and there's plenty of what there is. This hotel is what it is; good value you for money. If you want 5⭐ luxury go elsewhere and pay for it. I've stayed here many times now and never been disappointed.

Fabulous little hotel

I stayed here for 5 nights in August and it was just what I needed. Cheap and cheerful you get what you pay for! The staff were friendly and spoke good English (a lot better than my French anyway!) The room was basic but comfortable, and cleaners paid a visit every day which was very much appreciated. Don't be put off by the out of town location - I didn't take my car this year but the hotel is a pleasant 30 minute walk from the city centre and there are plenty of local buses passing right by the hotel, or from the nearby Memorial museum. I only ate at the hotel once and it was good I did have a breakfast which was rather good for the price. All in all very enjoyed my stay here and would happily return again.

The hotel is situated quite a way out of town, but close to the Memorial. A taxi cost me 20 euros from the station, but there is easy access by bus into town, once you know which bus to take. The staff were lovely and the restaurant was enjoyable. It's a quiet, no frills hotel.

Grotesquely overpriced bad location and service

Arriving from Strasbourg, where I had just spent 3 nights in a very good value hotel with friendly service for scarcely more than the cost of one night at this very inferior hotel, I had to pay € 30 for a taxi from the Station, a distance of 8 km to this hotel near the ring road. I spent only € 34 for the Blaa-Blaa ride of 500 Km from Strasbourg to Paris, so go figure the greed of Caen taxi drivers (which unfortunately seems matched by the greed and rotten service of other businesses in Caen)
On arriving at the hotel well before 11:00 pm (the official time of closure of Reception) the Reception was closed and I had to telephone for the entry code. This is unacceptable in a hotel charging a 3 star price for a very tiny dirty and inferior room. The room was awful - tiny, dirty and stank of fried onions. In fact it smelled like the kitchen of a particularly greasy Doner Kebab and the smell was so foul that even with the window open the whole night it was impossible to sleep, despite the fact I have a very weak sense of smell. Nobody on duty at Reception to whom I could address a request to change the room. The card in the Room stated the charge for single occupancy which your site does not allow me to state but I was charged € 20 more than this figure without excuse or explanation, and no compensation was offered for the filthy room or the awful smell. TV didn't work and you had to be a midget contortionist to use either the WC or the shower Breakfast was also poor value

The room was basic, but that's all I needed.

They closed at 11pm and I arrived at 11.15pm to find the doors closed. Someone passed my car as I parked and followed me up to the door. She explained that she worked in the hotel and a note was left for me on the front door with access details and she helped me locate the room.

I only needed a bed for the night and had to be up early in the morning. She was sat at the front desk when I approached.

The hotel went above and beyond expectation.

Staff were friendly and helpful and explained where we could find a laundromat that was close by. Staff went out of there way to make you welcome. Rooms are small, but adequate. Great value for the room rate. The meals were fine and many of the locals eat here as well, so expect that it is one of the better places to eat in the area.

Arrived at the hotel around 3pm , staff were very attentive and check in was straightforward. Very close to the Caen memorial museum (10 min walk), parking may be limited in high season though.
The room was basic, twin beds and a shower/bathroom pod, TV and a phone - that was it! The decor in the room and the hotel in general is dated, but still functional.
We ate in the hotel, 18 euros for a set 3 course menu, not too bad at all.
Breakfast was a little lacking on the fresh side, and perhaps some hot food would be nice. Still, what was there was nice.
Overall I would recommend this hotel if you are on a budget.

Hotel Crocus - Probably the best choice nearby

This was a very enjoyable stay. I booked this hotel for it's price; as such, I was not surprised or upset by the size of the room (or the bathroom). There are probably more comfortable places to spend your day, but we spent our days exploring the town and came back only to sleep. The room itself was perfectly clean, and well-maintained by the friendly staff. The real upside to this hotel (apart from it's location next to the Memorial Museum) was the provided breakfast and dinner. Breakfast was a rather functional buffet affair, but the well-priced dinner was absolutely delicious. We had planned to eat out cheaply, but we found ourselves walking downstairs and sitting down every night instead! Don't hesitate to eat at this cozy restaurant.
Overall, the stay was very enjoyable and I would most certainly book it again.

Nice little hotel

I enjoyed the hotel, I ended up staying 2 nights here and it was fine for what I needed which was a bed, shower and toilet. It has a small restaurant which made a good pizza that I had on my first night there, the second evening however it was closed as I found out they close it during the weekends (Saturday's and Sunday's) and didn't know that until I returned that evening from my site seeing adventures. You need to book your breakfast upon checking in as there is a cost for it (most hotels across Europe charge for it), it was a simple breakfast. Staff was very pleasant and their English is way better than my French. In all I would return to this hotel in the future.

We expected absolute budget conditions, but were pleasantly surprised by the room, which had just that little extra bit of space which makes a big difference. OK, there was no air-con, but in all other ways it was comfortable. The restaurant had a limited range of options, but the meals were fine, and it was well-located for the morning dash to the Ouistreham ferry.

At time of stay (Feb 2013) hotel was doing some construction and remodeling, but nothing disruptive to guests that I saw. The small restaurant at the hotel was an unexpected pleasure. Very good food at reasonable prices. Ate dinner there twice. Note that breakfast is not included with the room, costs extra. I did not try the breakfast. Free parking and fast free WiFi.

Fine for a stop-over

Stayed for 1 night as a stop-over through France. Room was small - there are two sizes which we didn't realise beforehand but we still had room to put up our travel cot. Quiet location and the room itself was quiet too. Décor is a bit dated but room was very clean and the breakfast was excellent. Overall pretty good value and convenient location.

Okay for an overnight stop over

The photos make this hotel look alot nicer than it is! Rooms are very small, bathrooms are tiny. The man at the front desk was quite helpful with good advice. Locations isn't great, but we had a car so we managed alright. Breakfast extremely over priced - paid €9 for 1 bowl of cereal. I wouldn't reccomend staying here for a long time.

Great little hotel

This hotel was great. Breakfast was really good. Perfect location for day trip to Omaha Beach, it's about 30min drive. Staff was nice and friendly. It has free parking. We enjoyed our stay.

this is second time I have stayed here; again, I neeeded somewhere near the ferry port and was just looking for somewhere convenient and cheap. Again, this was excatly what I got.
But staff were great; very helpful, understood my French and asked me which language I wanted to use, rather than just using English.
Very helpful and freindly at meal times.
It is not a fancy hotel / restaurant, but provides excellent friendly economical accomodation close to the ferry port

Awful Location

The room had to the smallest room allowed by law. The bathroom was no bigger than an airplane bathroom with a shower added. The location was horrendous. It was on the outskirts of Caen and there were zero restaurants, stores or anything near it. Since it was so far out there were no cabs (they would have been expensive to get into town anyway) and had to rely on city busses. But since the last busses ran at 9pm, there was no way to really enjoy Caen at night. Staff was very friendly and helpful, and they deserve to be working at a much better hotel than this. In fact, if I owned a hotel, I'd hire them. But the whole experience was killed by the location of the hotel and room size. Probably the first time I have felt very let down by Expedia.

Crocus Hotel Caen

The hotel has a nice lobby, and Dining room. It's located well, Parking is ample. The desk people were very friendly and spoke English well. They made accomidations for our Grandson, whom we had picked up in Amsterdam. The room however left a bit to be desired. The bathroom door closed, but didn't latch. My bed was quite worn, and the room had a rather strong odor. I opened the window which helped. Also the room was not sound proof, not even sound resistent. You could hear other people talking in the hall way. Over all I was pleased, but not thrilled.

This hotel, whilst best described as basic was very good value for money.

The room was clean and functional and the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Being on the' periphique' it was easy to find and was well served by buses from the city. Unfortunately there was little in the way of bars in the immediate surrounding area.

Having said that the hotel served good food and drinks.

I would recommend this hotel particulary for those needing cheap, short stay accommodation.

Excellent Budget Hotel

This hotel is located right on the outside of Caen. Staff was friendly, room was small by American standards, and clean. The hotel also has excellent free wifi. The breakfast was a bit expensive so we went to the local grocery store one morning and then to McDonalds the next. McDonalds is less then a mile away from the hotel. The only bad this about this hotel was that we couldn't check out until after 8:00am.

Caen - not outstanding but ok !

Was out of town a way, however as we were there only for one night it didn't matter (and we had a car). Was conveniently located near the Memorial. There was a restaurant on site and a lovely area in the sunshine you could sit and enjoy. The rooms were reasonably average with a light that didn't work, but acceptable for the price. Perfectly clean room however.

hotel convenient for motorway.

this hotel is located near the main ring road around caen,but we still needed the sat nav to locate it as the hotel itself is situated near industrial estates.
its cheap and cheerful,the first thing we noticed was a faint musty smell in the corridors.the corridor walls themselves where not covered in wallpaper but a kind of pink carpet type material!
the rooms are small but adequate if you dont intend to reside in them all day.there also seemed to be a fair number of girl sports teams staying on 3 consecutive nights while we were there.breakfast is extra but good,its the usual continental stuff.evening meals in the restaurant served from 7.00 p.m,again not included in the price of your room.

A satisfactory stay in a convienent location for the channel port at Ouistreham - hotel basic but adequate - rooms small, and facilities as prefabricated caravan style - shower, basin & toilet. One night only for us, and wouldn't want to be based there - priced Value for Money.

Hotel Crocus--mixed feelings

Wow, where to start as we have very mixed feelings about this place!
Pulling up into the parking lot was a shock as the exterior gave the impression of a totally two-bit dump. We checked in, went up the stairs, freaked out on the unlit hallways (which then lit by motion sensors) and general 70's-ish appearance of the walls and floor, got into our quite small room, and immediately started talking about if we should go find another place to stay!
We decided to get something to eat in the restaurant downstairs and decide. The restaurant was empty, but filled up as we ate. The food was actually just fine and the service pretty good (our waiter/front desk guy seemed like he must have had some sort of training in a fancier place).

We decided to stay at least one night out of our two-night reservation due to the fact that the rest of the hotel guests in the restaurant seemed very normal and regular. I think this hotel in the US would have been filled with pimps and prostitutes, but everyone here seemed like totally normal folk.

The hotel itself is in kind of an industrial area with not much to do, although it is very close to the Caen Memorial, which is part of why we chose it. It is maybe 8 minutes from downtown and the Chateau Ducal which was also nice.

We ended up staying both nights as after the initial shock, the room was comfortable and clean, although the bathroom is one of those precast, plastic, all-in-one, right off the Space Shuttle type deals. It was a little tight to say the least and neither my wife nor I are big people.

Thinking about this now causes mixed emotions: Was it an ok place to stay for the price? Yes, but only because it was so inexpensive and the rest of the guests were regular people looking for a hotel close to the Caen Memorial. However, this hotel was ranked as #4 in Caen. I'm not sure how it can possibly be this high.

Was the hotel staff up to snuff? Yes, I think any of them could work in a higher-end hotel.

Was the restaurant ok? Yes. The food was pretty good, the service better than average, it was clean, and the breakfasts were worth the price.

Would I stay there again? No, I would probably stay in Bayeux, which is where we stayed after two nights here, because it is so close and an easy drive to see the sights in Caen.

So--mixed feelings. I partly regret not choosing a better hotel and probably paying a little more,but this place was better than my first impressions.

Last thought----use your key to lock your room!! It is the only hotel I have ever stayed in that the door does not have an automatic lock of some sort!!
