Lovely stay

Lovely experience. Ideally situated for the centre, quiet with lovely bars close by. Very clean, warm and spacious. There was a smell from the toilet but we accepted this may be the case on a boat and we did eventually get used to it and not notice it. Would we stay here again …. A resounding yes

A lovely boat apart from the smell.

A lovely boat with everything that was needed. Sadly though, there was a rancid smell coming from the toilet/bathroom which didnt dissipate and stunk the entire vessel out. This was such a shame as the beds were comfy and the facilities were excellent.

Brilliant stay

It was an amazing stay with everything we needed on the houseboat. Great accommodation in a lovely little area on Victoria Quays. It was a little breezy on Friday so the boat moved a little bit after that hardly any movement at all. Really clean boat that provided everything you needed and more. Would 100% recommend.

Very nice all in all, easy to park, right outside, quiet and secluded area yet 5 mins walk into Sheffield. Enjoyed our stay. Just need to modernize the TVs, new mattresses and have onboard internet and it would be perfect.

Really relaxing and enjoyable stay. Close to city centre, whilst being remote enough to enjoy some piece and quiet. Wish we had booked for longer. Will definitely recommend and return again.

We loved this accommodation, it was a surprise to my partner and his face when he saw the boat, he was absolutely thrilled to bits, the location was also terrific it was in the centre of everything Sheffield has to offer and it was tranquil too, the best of both worlds! It was lovely and clean and fully equipped with more than a hotel room with obviously the option to cook if you wanted and its spacious, I could go on about how much we enjoyed it but I think it’s something that one should experience themselves and as far I we are concerned we’d love to stay there again and it’s highly recommended

A wonderful short stay

It was a surprise for my girlfriend who had no idea where we were stopping but was really happy when we arrived in front of the houseboat Millie Grace.
We were met by Mark who was really friendly and made us feel welcome.
The house boat has everything needed for a comfortable stay and was kept up to a very high standard.
I would certainly recommend anyone wanting a short stay in a normal hotel to consider houseboat hotels for something a little different.

Comfortable, clean, moored next to a lovely bar!

I am 6'5\" and thought I'd struggle but was comfortable on the boat. The facilities - heating, cooking equipment, TVs, beds, shower, hot water etc - were all in good working order.

I will look to stay on houseboats every time now!

Small floating apartment with character

It's a small floating apartment. Very private and cosy. Directions are good and it's relatively easy to find (given the foibles of the Sheffield road system). Parking is also easy, just by the boat with a parking permit provided.
It's also handy for the town centre (an easy but up-hill walk).
If you don't want to prepare your own breakfast then the Victoira Junction Cafe is only a few yards away.
The double bed is comfortable and cosy. We've now stayed four times and still find it nice for a night or two in Sheffield when we are passing through.

Quirky Change

What a great alternative to a mundane stay in a large chain Hotel. Good location to peruse the sights, shops and bars of Sheffield City Centre. We stay in many varied types of S/C accomodation whilst travelling around the country for work and this would rate very highly and will defintely be the place to stay whilst in the area. Great place for work and pleasure.

A peaceful breakfast

This was our third stay on the Millie Grace and as good as ever. We were only there overnight so didn't have as long as usual to use the amenities but hot croissants and coffee straight out of the oven on a cold morning while sitting peacefully on our own houseboat was great.

Houseboat was warm and cosy, bed small as u would expect but comfortable.
Location was quite isolated, dark and we were the only boat being lived on so it was a little unnerving returning to it late at night.
Very helpful and friendly owner.

Oasis in the cbd

Fantastic quite spot bang in the center of Sheffield. Easy walking distance to everything. The boat was really comfortable with everything that you could possibly need. Only slight downside was the lack of wifi, but you know about this before going, and the fridge in the boat we stayed in was a bit broken inside. The fridge worked absolutely fine, just the holding racks in the door were missing, so that area was virtually unusable.. These are very picky flaws in what is the most fantastic place to stay. I would definitely stay again!!

Great change from a run of the mill hotel room

The boat hotel was a great experience and it made a nice change from staying in a regular hotel room.
It was cosy, homely and more spacious than I had imagined.
We made the most of our stay by cooking a nice on board followed by the selection of board games provided.
Overall it was a nice relaxing break and we are both recommending the experience to friends.

wow - superb experience.

Wow - never stayed on a boat before but this was the best place I've stayed for many years (and I stay in hotels every wk of the year on business). Can't believe a beatiful place like this is within walking distance of Sheffield city centre. Great info from owner - private mooring, free parking, kitchen, 2 double beds, bunk bed, shower, DVD, 2 TV's and a cafe outside that opens at 7am. I'm 6 foot 5 so was concerned that I wouldn't be able to stand up but it was perfect. And the best sleep I've had for ages. Fully recommended to my work colleagues & family. Worth going just for the experience of being on a boat - I wouldn't venture into Sheffield though.

Lovely change for the normal hotel room

The boats are first class, spotlessly clean, they look brand new, with little touches like chocolates on the pillow, towels, all bedding, tea and coffee, bathroom toiletries, hand wash, washing up liquid and dishcloths tea towels. A real home from home. There is a nearby cafe which does food and it is only a very short walk to the town centre. Very peaceful to say it is in the City. Parking was immediately by the boat. Would definately book again if visiting this area.

refreshingly different!

It was a real treat to stay on this lovely cosy boat in the 1819 (I think) Victoria Quays. It was beautifully presented, peaceful and private. We would definitely book there again if we visit Sheffield. We were there for the theatre, the Brian Friel season. The Crucible in particular is a marvellous venue.

Fantastic service

I read the previous reviews, and was a little worried, but once turned up i was very very happy. The boats where replaced in July 2013 when new owners took over. everything is spotless. such a nice change to sleep on a boat instead of the normal hotels i stay so much in on my travels. i really recommend everyone stay here. Makes a nice change. beds are brilliant. it has everything you need. and is nice and warm too with the heaters. so dont worry about being cold. it is brilliant and i would stay again!

Disappointed by overall state of the boat.

The unique experience of staying on a houseboat wasn't lost on us and we weren't expecting complete luxury with all mod cons. The boat was cosy and warm and the solitude was welcome. We took along a few bottles of wine and enjoyed watching the Olympics from the comfort of the massage chair and the reflections across the water from the open hatch. However the experience was marred by the dirty and shabby state of the boat.There were quite a few cobwebs, grime on the cupboard fronts, holes in the teatowels and we were dismayed to discover that about half the cutlery had broken handles and there were roasting dishes in the cupboards with thick pools of dirty fat in them, A dirty, stained decanter was also sat in the lounge, every blind was marked with yellow waterstains and the mirror was held to the wall with brown parcel tape.We had trouble on returning to the boat when dark as the torch provided did not work, the batteries were corroded and there were no spares to be found. That said the bedlinen was beautifully fresh and clean as were the towels. We think that if the boat was given a refurb it would easily have been the experience we wanted it to be but given that it is way over the price of a decent hotel room we feel slightly aggrieved by the state it is rented out in. I hope we have been fair in this review as overall we did enjoy our stay.

Mallard Houseboat: great concept, poorly executed

Positives: seamless booking and arrivals process, prompt and comprehensive information received from the operators of the boats, all instructions were clear and concise and the boat is in a sweet location on the canal. Negatives: Mallard requires complete internal refresh. Interior is shabby and only moderately clean with grease on surfaces and kitchen accessories, stale smells throughout and flies in abundance in the onboard loo. It's the small things that count: if the pedal is broken on the inexpensive waste bin, the bin should be replaced. The washing up brush containing human hair and the greying dishcloth should be discarded, not left to be re-used. We were disappointed with the state of the boat but remain convinced that this is a great alternative to a hotel stay; if the boat was subject to proper cleaning and refurbishment we would want to try it again.
