Property is good but could use some renovation for being ITC property, however the staff was extremely good and accommodating. Didn’t like the initial room and was changed to better room immediately. Special shut out to Ali in breakfast area and can’t remember the name of another staff who assisted with luggage and any help I needed. Really impressed with the staff. Location is also very goo considering it is 20 min to anywhere you want to go

This was my 2nd time staying at ITC Sonar. My experience met my expectation.
I try to be a low maintenance guest, however the hotel staff were always trying to ensure that my stay was comfortable.

Housekeeping, room service, reception, laundry services, guest relations, checkin staff, security, gym staff, restaurant staff and managers were
always doing their best to ensure that guests do not have a reason to complain about.

The breakfast buffet had plenty of options. The restaurant staff were polite, respectful and tried to offer the best possible service.
Gym was well equipped, clean and spacious.
Laundry service was quick and effortless.
Room service and reception staff were prompt and professional.
The security staff were well trained and were capable of doing their job flawlessly.
The front desk was knowledgeable and eager to help.
Guest relation staff members were professional.
The room was very comfortable and quiet. The bed, linens and furniture were perfect.
Elevator worked swiftly. The property was squeaky clean and well decorated for the festive season

This is one of my favourite hotels in Kolkata now. This time, I stayed for 10 days and it was a joyful experience.

After some initial trouble with the front desk person who was checking me in, I was pleasantly surprised when Adreeja took over and immediately resolved the issue with deft handling and professional courtesy. It was Adreeja's hospitable behaviour that prevented me from changing hotels. After that initial hiccup, however, i faced no issues and had a great stay at Sonar. The staff was extra courteous and went the extra mile to accommodate my requests. 5 stars to Adreeja and her team.

It was a wonderful value for a first class hotel. The keycards were a problem for the entire 3 days. But the politeness of the staff made up for the card problems. Breakfast was very tasty, but the chai was not good at all. Fix the keycards and chai and it would be the best hotel in Kolkata!

ITC Sonar- Old World Charm

ITC Sonar has the old world charm. It is trying very hard to stay relevant( and succeeding to some extent) after the advent of its bigger and better hotel next door, ITC Royal Bengal.
But, for all its efforts, its a little jaded now. But its a large sprawling property.
The Pan Asian restaurant is very good. A must eat place.

Had a horrible experience at ITC Sonar Bangla, stayed for one night and had booked a room with city view, they gave a room with a view of a brick wall on literally the ground floor. When I called the front desk they kept transferring my call and telling me someone will come to my door to chnage to room, after 5 calls to the front desk and the duty manager and spending almost 2 hours trying to get the room I booked in the first place they stopped responding to my calls and made me stay in a dirty and smelly room. Never expected to get something more just what I booked for. I expected at least the manager to call and let me know that it would not be possible. They didn’t even have the courtesy to do that. This is the state of ITC hospitality

Will be posting the picture of lizards on the door of my room. If there are lizards near the rooms where there is supposedly nothing to feed on for the lizards, one can only imagine he hygiene in their food production areas.

I reached hotel at around 4:15 pm for check in but I was told that room will take another 15 minutes to be sanitized/cleaned. On my insistence that I am getting late for meetings and this is normal check in time and not early check in, I was allocated the room. However, the staff sitting at check in counter was so arrogant that she didn’t even help or asked concierge to help me with my luggage. I carried 2 heavy bags to my room (which was a long walk) and none of the staff watching me carrying those 2 bags came forward for help !! So in summary, some of the staff I dealt with were very arrogant.

ITC Sonar is a very old property, most of facilities like swimming, gym, spa etc are under renovation. However, we got temporary access to connected ITC Royal Bengal building to access such facilities
The lily pond appears too dirty too. Eden Restaurant was always full during breakfast no space to seat. Staffs are polite and willing to help, food was also nice. System management is poor, I paid via my debit card while I checked in. This was not showing to the executive at reception and he was asking me to make another payment. Annoying! How come a paid status for my hotel accommodation wouldn’t reflect to them in their system , I paid all my dining and other expenses in cash at the spot. They were insisting for the receipt I got at the time I checked in or else pay again. What a joke!!

I was very disappointed on my first ever visit here. I have seen and heard about sonar bangla since I was a child and was especially hoping that the cleanliness, service and quality would be above and beyond owing to covid. Sadly though this was not the case. I am very aware that our dates coincided with the news years celebrations but we had booked a more than average room and found out that there was a suspicious pee like smell in our bed! Since we checked in quite late, close to midnight, we decided to let them know in the morning as we were staying another night. We were promised a thorough cleaning but no change of room. Then we left the hotel for the better part of the day to run errands and when we returned the room had been cleaned but the bathroom smelled like cigarette smoke in a non smoking room. Obviously upset we called customer service only for housekeeping to come and spray room freshener! Even though we were a little shocked at this we were tired and just wanted a quiet New Years together relaxing in bed and watching something. When we then got in to bed, the suspicious pee like smell was still there!! When we then again called front desk they said the room had been cleaned and sprayed! So we had no choice but to get cross with them and ask for a new room because even the housekeeping said it smelled like pee!
They finally moved us at 830 atwhich point we were totally over it. Very sad about this experience as sonar bangla has been an installation in Calcutta!

ITC Sonar has been my family's favourite hotels to go to in Kolkota. This time I visited after quite a time lapse and I have to say the exterior areas or courtyards etc. are still quite appealing, the rooms however are crying for renovation. It's high time that the property sees an upgrade as it has more than gone through its useful life cycle.

Lovely hotel, but a bit old now

The ITC Sonar is the older hotel there and the Royal Bengal is the new one, right next to each other. There was confusion about which one I was booking, and I booked Sonar unintentionally while I was trying to book the other one.
The checkin checkout process was clumsy and staff were untrained.

Initially we had booked at ITC Sonar but our criteria of twin beds and smoking room could not be met, therefore we were upgraded and accommodated at Royal Bengal.
This is probably is the largest hotel in Kolkata today and really with a Royal look.
The room was very large, beds were very comfortable, bathroom was also of good size and air conditioning was nice. However the view outside from the room was disappointing.
The restaurant was very large and all types of cuisines available, breakfast buffet was lavish.
The check in and check out was quick and very courteous.
Cleaning and all other services were excellent.
Overall it was a memorable short stay with value for money. We hope to stay again on our future trips.

It seems with the opening of The Royal Bengal, there is a staff drain from ITC Sonar. The service at Sonar is rather poor. For Room Service you have to call at least 3 times for any one to pick up. Service is done by interns. Breakfast at Pavilion: egg order, coffee order you have to remind them at least twice. Airport drop, the transport Desk came to me with a card machine during breakfast. Service needs major improvement.

No smoking room with smoke odor, moist corridors with misty smell, inconsistent TV cable service with frequent disconnect, no service and failure to attend calls and need for follow up are not the things one expects to be put up with.

The property is old and needs refurbishment. The staff was mostly warm and helpful, concierge in particular was wonderful. Amenities were great. The other issue which is not unique to this hotel (in India) is the need to “preauthorize” an amount on the cc. It would be ok, if they are able to reverse it smoothly in the end but my usual experience is negative. I have had to work with my bank to resolve the charges.
