Room spelled very musky. Staff was not very helpful. Poor communication. Breakfast was OK. But you could see they were running out of things. I really hate to write a bad review and I always give the benefit of the doubt and maybe they were just having a bad time except the room did smell bad. There was no hot water in the morning and when my wife tried to take a shower, she was never able to get the hot water working the night before. Location was great, but as for the rest, if you stay here in this town, don’t pick this hotel.

We had a wonderful stay in this quaint hotel located in a 1645 historic building - a former monestery and military hospital- within and part of the city walls. Our room with terrace overlooked the garden, swimming pool and the historic city walls as well as the beautiful surroundings. We enjoyed the sunsets there. This hotel is close to the city center, has free parking and breakfast was delicious. Staff was very friendly and helpful. We loved that they have several quiet reading/sitting areas. Prices are reasonable. We noticed that several rooms were getting updated. There is also a beautiful courtyard with orange trees. And the restaurant has a huge (cooking?) fireplace. This hotel is a great base to not only visit Elvas, but also Evora, Badajoz and Merida. We look forward to our next stay here

The room was equipped with a window that overlooked a corridor. The service provided by the staff was observed to be slow. An unusual odor was present in the lobby and corridors. The breakfast offerings were unsatisfactory. Noise levels were elevated. The doors were fitted with an alarm system that activated when left open for an extended period, which unfortunately triggered during the night as guests exited their rooms.

Staff were nice. Place has a weird old smell. But it is an old building. Decor is dated and bedding feels meh. Bathroom shower head had someone else’s hair wrapped around it.
For the price it’s kinda what I expected. North American motel vibes in castle like building.
View was nice. Parking easy. Neighbour was annoying and started playing music at around 2am. Had to put my AirPods in to sleep but still slept terrible. The noise and the beds a bit hard for me. That’s not the hotels fault.

Worst stay ever

Worst stay ever - air con not working at 40 degrees ! The internet did not work the whole time we were there. Ate in the restaurant and one meal inedible and having a drink before dinner the chef had several shots !!! Reported to manager - end result full refund. Lift not working and the comp breakfast we were offered was withdrawn in the middle of the restaurant and we had to go to reception to sort out - Avoid avoid avoid is all I can say !!!

The building is excellent. The stay not great. I don't recommend an interior rooms as the temperature was out of our control(hot and stuffy). They kindly gave us a new room when asked. A 4 star rating is to high...ex. paper cups, no chairs on the terrace. Even with a language barrier, the staff could be more friendly.

They did not provide us with the VIP treatment (welcome drinks) promised in my Hotels.com reservation.
3 euros for a beer at the hotel bar is crazy expensive for a small Portuguese town. On top of that, the two waiters were serving cocktails to themselves and drinking them in front of us. Surreal, I have never seen such thing in my life. I have been visiting hotels at least twice a month for business in more than 50 countries
Hot water was not available in my room.
Dinner was good at a decent price.
The building is beautiful but should be taken care of better.
Breakfast buffet is not a 4 star one. Far from it.

A cheap basic hotel in a good location.

The rooms were very basic not a bit like the one on the website. No bedside tables and nowhere to put things down as there was only one small table. There was only luke warm water to the sink and bath.

When we arrived at reception we asked if the restaurant was open that evening and was told that it would be at 7.30pm. We arrived just after 8pm but there were no staff and we were told the bartender would be back in five minutes. 10 minutes later we found him but he said that there were no hot meals that evening and the restaurant was closed but he could make us a sandwich. Definitely Not 4 star.

For dinner I ordered soup and when it came the soup was cold. I had to ask them to heat up the soup, which also tells me the soup was not fresh. Then when the main course spaghetti arrived, it was cold too and that's when I decided that was enough so I spoke to the waiter and he said he wouldn't charge me for the spaghetti since I didn't eat it. This four star hotel is overrated because it should be a one star hotel.

Second time of staying at the same hotel I now see the true colors of the staff. Every time I asked a question, the red hair receptionist (forget her name) was always playing /shuffling paperwork as if she was too busy to even print me a receipt upon check-out.

Check first to see who the kitchen staff is before you order the food. If it's Ines (the short lady with long hair) do not order and go somewhere else. She's also not friendly and never smiles at us. There are two Ines' in dinning.

We gave this hotel a good rating at first but after the second time of staying there, we chaned our minds especially after receiving the cold food. We were blown out of our minds that this could be happening at a four star hotel.

Whenever we needed new towels, the housekeeping staff would drop everything to accommodate us immediately. They would even shorten their lunch hour to meet our needs.

Wonderful place - was an old convent then a military hospital. The building was constructed in the 1600's so it just radiates with character. We loved the worn marble stairs and the winding passage ways. It also has sitting areas throughout the hotel where you can sit and read or gather to talk or check emails. The staff is also extremely friendly and helpful. We highly recommend this place.

What a gorgeous hotel!!! It is in a several hundred years old monastery and there are signs of old wood and marble from the days of old. Each room held a monk and the ceilings are vaulted and wooden. So beautiful. Request room 301, open the windows and look straight down for a nice surprise!!!! This property was a five minute walk from all kinds of restaurants and shopping. Eat at Restaurante Luís Cobra one block away. You wont regret it!!

Perfect location to the center of town and easy to get to. Interesting history of the building. We were upgraded to a huge room with lots of antique furniture but still a bit sparse. Staff was excellent particularly Daniela. Bar was closed but breakfast was good. The pool was a nice way to spend a hot afternoon after visiting the city.

Over all, this is a very interesting hotel. It used to be a Monastery and it still holds true to its roots with antique furniture, artifacts and tiled walls. We stayed in an interior room with the window looking out into the sitting room. It would probably be better to stay in an exterior room for more light. The full breakfast is included and it was excellent. I recommend that you book your stay in warmer weather because the halls and restaurant are not heated.

A very enjoyable stay!

We loved our stay at this hotel. We had a really nice room overlooking the pool, a comfortable bed and a terrace where we sat with a bottle of wine in the evening. We enjoyed sitting and reading by the pool in the afternoon and breakfast the next morning was delicious. We had the option of sitting in their beautiful courtyard with lime trees or inside in the dining area. The hotel was very atmospheric having been a convent, we could feel the history as we wandered around the corridors! The staff were very friendly and helpful, and it was useful being able to park our car in their spacious carpark. A happy stay for us!

Property is old but well maintained. Room was large (historic) and open to street with nice view of city. Only complaint was that the air conditioning didn't work well and it was a humid day. Keeping the window open would have helped, but noise (not too loud) would allow. However, the hotel was in a great location which made walking the core of the city easy. The courtyard is nice. We were able to have breakfast outside. Overall a good choice.

Historic Hotel in Elvas

We were updated to a superior room with balcony - view of garden, country and town. Also received a voucher for a free drink. Elvas is a very historic town inside a fortress. The hotel is very nice and has a garden area with a swimming pool. As it was very hot it was a delight to use. Air conditioning,WiFi and bathroom with bath were all fine. A nice bar and courtyard area. We enjoyed the buffet

Lovely old hotel, rooms good, bar service really poor, I got fed up of chasing the barman who could be in the outside patio area, pool area, or bar. I regularly sat for half an hour or more with an empty glass, nobody coming round and asking if I would like another drink! Also, sadly the restaurant was only open for breakfast.

Lovely Old Hotel

This was our second stay in this lovely old hotel. Our room was spacious, the bathroom huge. Parking is adjacent to the hotel and has a barrier for security. There is no restaurant in the hotel, but there are numerous restaurants in the delightful old town just a few minutes walk from the hotel. Breakfast is served in the hotel and was OK. We did not use the pool, but did enjoy a long, cool drink on the shady terrace.
The staff are helpful and friendly. The hotel was very clean and had good measures in place during these difficult times.

A lovely old hotel with lots of character, situated on a busy road which often smelt badly of drains. Staff from maids to reception were helpful and pleasant.Hotel room was spacious, bed was comfortable.... only negative was only one pillow. Bathroom was huge ,shower very powerful. Swimming pool was out of action the first two days, not very big and some areas outside hotel look neglected. Bar was closed most nights and there was no night life.

Beautiful old property. Room was huge and smelled a bit musty. The AC didn’t seem to work well, so we opened the windows. That cooled the room, but allowed insects to enter the room. A little after 10 PM, an extremely bright light turned on in the courtyard, flooding the room with light. It was difficult to sleep with so much light.

Lovely hotel in a former convent. It is perched just over the fortified walls, so has very nice views. Large free parking lot was very convenient—it is at the far end of the hotel through the archway. Luis at the reception desk was very friendly and helpful. We were given a choice of rooms and we chose a large room overlooking the square and small church in front of the hotel. Heavy wooden doors close at night to block light and street noise. The room was very comfortable, with a mini-fridge. There was no safe in the room. We could hear doves or pigeons cooing in the rafters above us—a very soothing sound. Breakfast buffet was ample with eggs, bacon, toast and croissants, yogurt and juice. The weather was too cool for us to try to sit in the courtyard or on the patio around the pool. Citrus and olive trees are growing on the property. Many restaurants are nearby and everything in town is easily within walking distance. Very nice stay in a lovely old building.

A hotel needing updating and staff training

The taps in our room only gave very hot water and when we told the staff their only solution was to walk to another room down the corridor for our shower! No apology was given. Our room had a balcony and the door to it had a gap at the top - luckily we had fine warm weather. The breakfast was very average. However you couldn’t beat the location. We would not use it again.

Restored Monastery, good location in Elvas

Beautifully restored monastery in good location at the edge of Elvas (set into the city walls/defences. Nice pool and garden set on a terrace above the hotel. Free parking at the side of the hotel. We had a lovely room with view of cobbled streets. Some rooms looked less impressive. Breakfast buffet included and was quite adequate. Very easy walk to castle and town centre and to defences. Also easy to walk to good restaurants and cafes. We had a nice lunch at a cafe I think called Sunflower and a good evening meal at Adaga Regional. Both had very good vegetarian choices as well as meat and fish.

Lovely old building with beautiful courtyard that is within old city walls, close to restaurants, minisupermercado, and pleasant walk up to castle and other historical sights. Nicely updated bathroom, tiled headboard. Bedroom was large, airy, clean and comfortable. Public rooms somewhat faded but provided an aura of its history as a convent and were spacious and weloming. Breakfast was included and generous but uninspired (hot dishes were tepid.)

The hotel is a beautifully restored convent. The grounds are lovely. We had room 203 and it was very cold. It was explained to us that it was cold outside and that was the reason. The wifi is very poor even in the lobby. The hotel was very quiet but the bed linen could do with a refreshing. The breakfast was average and the coffee was dreadful. The town itself was interesting for a few hours. The man on the front desk was efficient.

Rewarding stopover driving Bilbao to Algarve

My wife and I stayed here mid-December, taking a leisurely drive South. Previous reviewers have mentioned that the general standard may be becoming somewhat dated but this really has to be taken in context of the value and situation. I have given 5-stars on that basis. The hotel is a converted historic building in a fantastic position. The rooms are large, including the en-suite bathroom and the latter was a tad prone to condensation given the time of year. Opening a window for 5-minutes fixed that.

We did not eat in the hotel restaurant in the evening, instead choosing to walk around the town and the views from the top were fantastic. We dined within 5-minutes walk of the hotel in an excellent local restaurant at very reasonable cost.

Breakfast was a great experience too, and included in the cost! If you want top-of-the-range scrambled eggs then get up early. The bacon and sausage and the good range of the usual continental breakfast buffet could not be faulted despite the fact we only turned up at 09:30.

If you appreciate value-for-money in a fantastic setting and can make some allowances then you should like this hotel. People with salaries and expectations in inverse proportion to common sense please keep out for the benefit of others.

Hidden gem hotel in hidden gem city

This hotel is a hidden gem in a hidden gem of a city. It is build into the ancient city wall and oozes with history. It is elegant. I highly recommend. Our room overlooked a courtyard filled with orange trees that was great place for relaxing after a day of walking and climbing up to the castle.

A great stay in World Heritage Elvas

We recently spent 4 days visiting the World Heritage city of Elvas, a tranquil city with a fascinating history. We stayed at Hotel Sao Joao de Deus, inside the city walls and had a great time exploring--the inner city is compact and one absolutely cannot get lost! We were able to have numerous encounters with local citizens, who were uniformly friendly and helpful. We developed a real fondness for this community.

We used this for a one night stopover on our way from Albufeira to Bilbao. It was a fantastic old building that was part of the city outer walls.The bedroom and bathroom were both massive with very comfortable furniture. There was no restuarant open in the hotel that night but we ate nearby in a typical Portugese restuarant which served generous portions at very low prices.

They told me to walk up the hill to the tourist office, which is only open during certain hours. Good Breakfast. Extraordinary medieval town with fortresses, a castle and intact fortification walls. There is a patio on the fortification wall with grass and mature olive trees. Beautiful.

We had two rooms, one of which had bad odor coming from bathroom, kept door closed to limit smell in room, air conditioning worked well. To run electricity your room key needed to be inserted in slot by door. We placed folded paper into these slots to keep air conditioning runnning while we were out, recommend you do the same. Good location.

A palace! We loved it!

With its own car park this hotel is perfectly situated within the ancient walls of Elvas. Our room was enormous with a huge king size bed and a bathroom as big as my kitchen! Spotlessly clean, good quality linen, towels and a minibar fridge. The gardens surrounding the pool were lovely with plenty of loungers. Good breakfast included. Pleasant staff. Surrounded by antique furniture this 18th century building was delightful. A real find.

Top class

An excellent hotel set into the city walls of Elvas. It used to be a military hospital (in the Peninsular wars) but has been converted very cleverly into the hotel is now is. Stayed here on a number of occasions and would always stay here if in the Elvas region. Nothing adverse to say at all.

Could be a great hotel

We stayed at this hotel for one night. Brilliant position in the old town and the hotel itself exudes history.
The room and the ensuite were large and airy. However, there wasn't a passport safe and the bed linen needed some attention. Breakfast was adequate.
Staff were excellent. The receptionist spent considerable time making us feel welcome and explaining the history of the town and the hotel. The \"garden\" area was very good. Large and relaxing.
With just a little more investment this could be a great hotel.

Excellent hotel to stay in while in Elvas, Portuga

Hotel is located in centuries old convent. Our room was very comfortable and quite large. Very old school in décor and furnishings but pleasant. Location very good for exploring the city of Elvas. Staff helpful and pleasant. Excellent breakfast.

What a place!

This must be one of the most interesting hotels we have stayed in over the past 10 years. The reception staff could not do enough for us and the breakfast was more than one expects in Portuguese hotels The building itself is hundreds of years old but has been modernised in a most efficient way. Well worth a stay in Elvas, just for the hotel. BUT the address does not appear on my Sat Nav and the alleged GPS co-ordinates given on the Hotels.com booking confirmation are completely irrelevant. It therefore took some finding - but it was worth it.

This hotel is a gem, it is the most beautiful place to stay.

I visited this hotel in 2010, March, and it once was an armory, a convent and a hospital before becoming a hotel. The upper level garden is gorgeous, the lower patio garden is filled with flowering trees and citrus fruits. The food was excellent, the beds comfortable, and the bathrooms huge! Just the the water run a long time before it becomes hot, so you don't think you don't have any hot water, and don't run with wet feet on the tile floors! The hotel is built into part of the wall of the city! The architecture is awesome! The staff were very helpful and the concierge did speak English!
