This is a fortress as the name of the hotel implies. The rooms are in the Fortress Orsini. There is a parking lot that's about a 3-5 minute walk to the hotel (depending on how close to the hotel you park) but beware of maps on the iPhone. It indicated that I had to walk a lot farther, but when I called the hotel, they explained that I only had to walk a few minutes. The room was decent but since I sent in November, it was cool. The room had a radiator but I was informed that it was turned on only a couple times a day. So the room was not comfortable. Sleeping wasn't a problem because if it's a little cool, one can still stay warm. However, after a very long walk down to the city and back, I cam back to the hotel and it was very cold. And even when the heat was turned on, there was only a trickle of heat coming from the radiator. Be aware of this if you are traveling there during cold weather.

I don't normally rate 5 stars, but from the excellent meet to leaving, the entire staff was perfect. A five star meal, cupped with 5 star service, can not praise this place enough. We stayed one night and were enchanted with the fortress turned hotel in the heart of Sorano. Our room had amazing views of the surrounding town, the breakfast had fantastic coffee and a wide assortment of meats, cheeses, breads, and pastries. The owners tour of the underground wine cellars and wine making process capped off with a tasting was informative and delicious.

The apartment was beautiful and a perfect location for seeing the Bienniale. Around the corner is a wonderful restaurant. The agent who helped us was responsive and kind. My only suggestion would be to update the guests’ guide and directions for finding the apartment. Otherwise it was a lovely stay.

This place was interesting. I only stayed a night like cool a castle looking place, but when I arrived, I realized it was an entire experience. I would definitely go back just to explore all this place has to offer. I went during the rain, so I did find some beetles creeping in when I opened the window to see the view. So be aware if bugs spook you! Also, if you stay in room 3, the WiFi didn’t really reach to the bed. I had to leave my phone near the door in case someone had to call me. Which was fine. Breakfast was okay. But def would come back to explore.

We really liked our stay at the Fortezza. It is not luxurious, but it more than makes up for it with bucketloads of character. It is a great place from which to survey Sorano from above and to descend into its charming labyrinths. The associated restaurant in town was also really good.

I loved staying in a castle too and having incredible views. While the bedroom was nothing flash, the bathroom was modern and renovated which is what you want!

This was a bucket list item - stay in a castle!! it was a real treat, the room was very clean, bed comfortable, great shower. Easy and free parking was a bonus, and so easy to walk around Sorano. The dinner was exceptional, definitely eat in their restaurant at least once. We would definitely stay here again.

The most loveliest place I could have celebrated my 60th birthday. The fort is from the 12th century and the fifth oldest establishment in Europe to stay. Mind blowing. We received a nice welcome drink on arrival, staff was friendly and helpful. Very nice breakfast, beautiful decorated hotel and especially liked Duchess the cat.

I thought the drive up to drop off our luggage was pretty fun! Very steep with a couple tight turns. The free parking area is close enough to bring luggage from if you don’t want to drive the steep way. I did have a little trouble finding it.

What a find! An incredible place with so much character and history. We were so well looked after by the owner. The tasting menu was delicious and a real flavour of the area. The room was simple but very clean with everything you needed. Very comfortable bed. Overall a fantastic find and stay-would highly recommend it and hope to return!

This hotel is in an incredible location. Only downside was that we had to carry heavy suitcase up steep stairs to get to our room. Rooms are quite small, not much room for luggage. Breakfast was basic but good. You also have to leave your car away from the hotel.

Worried when we didn’t think there was a parking lot but a lady told us as we started walking up the hill it was just on the right side. Wonderful hostess. Even met the owner. One of the best stops of our trip. Loved the area especially the little pizza place that you can’t even tell is open down the hill. Walking through the hillside village was very romantic.

The room was very charming and really interesting! We were only there for one night, but the service was excellent. Since we had to leave before their complementary breakfast time, the receptionist graciously offered to send up a breakfast tray. We asked for a couple of items for breakfast that were not standard fare, and our tray arrived before bed time with everything we needed.

Unexpected! A really nice hotel in a Castle! Beautiful hotel in a quaint town perched on a hill overlooking the city! Wonderful! They even arranged a night tour into the hand dug Etruscan valley, and a tour of the fortress! Would Highly Recommend!

Checking in was very difficult because the entrance to the property is 350-400 yards from the parking lot over cobblestones and up stairs. There was no bellman to assist us. Once we got settled the staff and the owner were extremely pleasant. The grounds are beautiful but this is definitely not a hotel for the handicap.

Wonderful and interesting hotel inside an actual fortress with a ton of great history. Wonderful tour of the place. Wonderful medieval town surrounding it. Lots of great Etruscan ruins just around the corner, and the countryside is gorgeous. You’re doing the right thing by booking here. The staff is friendly and courteous, and unlike many of the busier sites in Italy, they WANT your business. They care about their community, their fortress hotel, and their history.

Sorano is a barely know gem. Guidebooks either have a very brief description or miss it out altogether. The old town is a stunning labrynth of narrow alleys and tunnels. Just across the valley are Etruscan ruins. Great location less than two hours from Rome. Food in the town is local Tuscan - wild boar, pici pasta (a bit like udon noodles). A few wine bars. Almost no tourists when we were there (October 10-11)

This hidden gem is amazing! The grounds are spectacular, and the views are breathtaking. The little town is so quaint and lovely! This was the perfect \"get away\" we needed while traveling from northern Italy down to Rome. No crowds, quiet, peaceful, beautiful...So happy I found this place. Owner and staff were so sweet and accommodating. I would highly recommend! ***It is very hilly and not good for those with mobility issues, but that's most of Italy! LOL!

Overall our stay was pleasing. If you are elderly or have any physical limitations do not stay here. Accessibility is a problem due to it’s location above the town. Internet connection was non existent and staff were unable/willing to assist my wife and I in obtaining access during our 2 day stay. A bottle of wine was proferred as a replacement for or lack of WIFI which we accepted gratefully. The suite we booked was wonderful with excellent AC and amenities. Breakfast had limited selections with a coffee dispenser which we found wanting (we are used to good coffee when traveling in Italy. The hotel advertises free onsite parking. However if you are not a professional driver you should park 1/4 mile away rather than risk the life threatening drive up the medieval forts path. If you meet a vehicle coming up when you are going down you and they are in trouble as the road is perhaps 30 degrees grade with a smooth stone surface which when damp from dew is precarious. Found few cars perked in their lot ( we were the only one each night). We went up once and down once only which was all my heart could take. We found Sorano to be less than friendly to us unlike our experiences in other Italian towns but it was quiet and quaint. We did go to the restaurant Fidalma where the food was good however the service was substandard (we waited over 15 min. After asking for our check and were given lame excuses for their lack of attention) This is my first negative review of any Italian hotel.

The Orsini fortress which sits above the town and incorporates the hotel is imposing yet charming and welcoming. Use their car park which gives level access (with some steps) rather than drive up the cobbled ramp as this is quite narrow and steep. Our room was up several flights of stairs but benefitted from a good view and stayed naturally cooler without air-con than other rooms we had stayed in. The food tasting (extra cost) was an excellent introduction to delicious local cuisine and was sufficient for our evening meal. We took the fortress tour which explores the passageways under the castle and gives access to the museum to enhance our stay. We also explored the via cava (sunken paths) which lead to a view point on the other side of the gorge (use insect repellant in summer) to get a feel for the geography. The old town itself is easy to explore and enchanting to experience especially in the evening. The staff were really friendly and spoke excellent english. I preferred Sorano to Pitigliano as it was less touristy but both are worth visiting. Hotel della Fortezza in Sorano was a definite highlight of our tour which included Lucca, Sienna, Florence, Montepulciano and Pitigliano.

We had a 2BR 2bath suite with A/C. The view out our window was over the town square. Check the view out of the hallway windows and the balcony out bavk. Awesome!! We enjoyed the room and had no problems. We had the tasting (like tapas) at the restaurant for dinner which was all very good plus excellent tiramisu for dessert. The included breakfast was simple but also delicious. All the staff was very nice and helpful. We also took the castle underground tour which was cool but was only given in Italian. (They gave us a typed sheet with info in English.) Our only problem was not knowing where to park as I don't think we were given instructions and the sign for the parking lot only faces one direction, so it was not visible as we came into town. Please ask them to send you a map and directions!

This hotel has so much character, it is a great place to stay. The staff, including the owner who did a good tasting one night(which I would recommend) are excellent, very accommodating and friendly people. The room was clean and comfortable with a view of the city and mountains. This is more than a hotel it's an experience....one that the staff brings to life with their knowledge of the local ruins, surrounding area and local foods and wine. We felt at peace and people who enjoy learning about local food, wine and surrounding areas of Sorano will love his hotel. We did!

Great Tuscan Stay at a Fort
If you’re looking to drive around Tuscany and experience great towns and history this is a great place to start. The fort is great with beautiful views and several hikes that you can do to visit ruins and the nature avaliable in the area. It’s also a short drive to several other small towns that are worth a visit. The hotel itself is very simple and comfortable, with great staff and perfect if you want something away from the larger cities.

The fortress is of course at the top of the town and it is quite a steep hike on uneven cobblestones. They did not tell us that we could park closer until we had hauled three large bags up there. IT took about fifteen minutes. Leave your bags in your car at the bottom of the hill and ask for help. Breakfast was very good, rnenovated interior, steps to upper rooms are steep and uneven. Gorgeous views from rooms, quiet, overall highly recommended.

A treat in southern Tuscany
We chose Sorano because of its proximity to the hot springs in Saturnia. And this hotel looked interesting. The reality much exceeded my expectations. The hotel staff is very helpful and friendly. The hotel is in an 11th century fortress sitting 100 -150 feet feet above the town. The rooms are small but charming, and the views from the rooms in the tower are spectacular. It is a 3 minute walk from where you park to the hotel which is inside the fortress - but that is part of the charm. The hotel was built 20 years ago; the current owners purchased it last year. Breakfast was the typical buffet. The hotel owner recommended a wonderful restaurant for dinner - which was our best (and least expensive) dinner of the trip. I'd definitely go back to Sorano, stay longer, and stay at this hotel.

Wonderful views from our room (Suite 16). Spacious and clean. Staff were very helpful with the check in instructions as we could only arrive after 8pm. Also helpful with suggestions on things to do in the area, and you get a discount if you want to do the tour of the fortress. Breakfast was the usual continental type, with eggs cooked to your order which was a very nice addition!
