The room was beautiful and the bathroom had a heated floor which was really nice. The resort was within walking distance to the beach. The big knock against this resort is the food. They offer a very underwhelming continental breakfast for minimum $23 nzd per person. It was not good value for the cost. For such a nice resort, they have a lot of room to improve on their food options, especially since Pauanui is so remote and the closest food options in town are extremely limited. Some of the restaurants in town are only open a few days a week. We had to drive 30 mins to the next closest towns to find better restaurant options. Don’t rely on this resort for good quality food options. It is otherwise well maintained and located if you’re looking for a beach vacation.

The 'Lodge' itself is great, but its not a 'Resort'. Its what we were expecting and had everything we needed - BUT... The F&B experience was poor. The Buffet dinner on Sunday which was pitched to us three times to reserve was below expectations both on variety and quality. It had extremely limited options. When being seated the wait staff could barely speak to us in English and we were not offered a drink, or given any orientation as to how or where we could obtain one (I went to the bar to purchase). We booked for the dinner over the phone on one of the three calls - which were really motivated by selling the 'Accor Vacation Club' to us. When we arrived for dinner they had no record of our booking and were informed that the food needed to be taken in due to health regulations - this left us 30 minutes to eat a NZD$120 buffet which consisted of sushi and a curry.

Breakfast was slightly better and basically what you expected but again - F&B staff have either no training or desire to be there. A person working the coffee machine at 7:45am would be a reasonable expectation and the offer of a coffee when seated would be fairly low expectations.

The amount of Steps to room was a bit of a surprise, glad it was not raining, Room was A1, View was bush so no view but this was expected. General staff were good special call out to our waitress Amelia who looked after us over our 3 day stay, very professional and helpful everything that makes a normal stay into something special. also Lauren and Zade who also stepped up to make our stay great. Overall well worth the stay.

Enjoyed the facilities available however was disappointed by the fact that I booed a room with a king size bed and it was made up of 2 single beds joined together. Also instead of a king duvet we were given 2 single duvets which kept dislodging when we slept. My partner and I were very disappointed and frustrated as we specifically paid more to book this room and the Tv was not programmed so we could not even watch TV.

Hopefully the hotel will get in touch and try to make amends.

I had an amazing solo getaway. The staff were lovely and really helpful. They let me check in early which was a nice surprise. I particularly enjoyed the heated pool and spa and the close proximity to the beach and pauanui hike. The staff also showed genuine care and told me to be careful on my way down from the hike as it can be slippery when wet. I would definitely come again

This resort is very unique…it’s like staying in a treehouse! Very comfortable and quiet. Pool is great! They even have free laundry, which was most appreciated. Make sure that you can walk stairs and hills if you want to stay here. We would come back in a heartbeat!

The visit was a real mixed bag.

Good - Room comfort overall is good. Most of the staff are friendly/trying their best. The location in the forest is great, nice to have a gym and pool etc. It could be romantic, but is a little bit of a walk to the beach/up a steep hill.

Bad - The property and grounds need a lot of maintenance. Some of the access is very steep. Dinner was ok, breakfast is poor/disorganised. Overall it doesn't feel very 4* service. The staff do try, but either the place is under funded or not well managed.

The room was really lovely and spacious. Big comfy bed, very nice bathroom with heated floor, great balcony, big fridge and they even had plates/bowls/cutlery. The outdoor pool was nice and had a sauna and a hot tub (although the hot tub wasn't very warm). Good little gym, great tennis court and free mountain bikes! They also had free laundry which was amazing. The breakfast was ok, fairly standard buffet with fresh and tinned fruit, yogurts, cereals, sliced bread, pastries, cheese, meat and some hot food in heated trays (scrambled eggs, sausages, bacon, baked beans). We didn't eat any other meals there as found some better looking restaurants nearby. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

I feel like this place was pretty special a few years ago. The resort is built on the side of a huge hill, and, i'm guessing, used to be serviced by staff that would run you up in a golf cart, etc. - They seem understaffed, now, and you're kinda on your own for everything. If you're a hiker, and under 30, this might work for you. Otherwise, get ready to climb. - I'm not exaggerating. The cottage itself was cute, and nestled in the ferns, but, everything seems a little worn and dated.

Nice comfortable clean room set in a beautiful wooded location on a hillside. Lots of birdsong to sit and listen to on the attached deck. Very nice beach within walking distance. on-site restaurant has wonderful setting and ambience, food is good but not great. Pauanui is a little too quiet for my taste... only one road in and out, and only 2 restaurants open in the evening (other than the property), but I wouldn't ding the hotel for that.

It’s a little bit of paradise in the bush but only minutes to the beach.
The only thing that lets it down is the food, definitely not 5 star food, we were there for 3 nights and our original intention was to have dinner there for all 3 nights, but my dinner was very basic and definitely not a lot of it, was very disappointed, we went out for dinner the remaining 2 nights, plus breakfast again is basic food that you make at home every day!

Beautiful area, nice scenery, quiet. The hotel and rooms are lovely and well made but the rooms are up a one-way hill making access to them quite inconvenient.

If you have babies or small children, this makes things difficult and less enjoyable.

Wouldn't recommend coming to Pauanui in Winter, mostly because there are very few options for food.

Really awesome nature around us. Only thing is its an uphill climb to all rooms.They do offer golf cart lifts on request to the rooms and let you take your car upto the to unload luggage.

Puka Park Retreat

Facilities were great, peaceful and tranquil in the bush setting. Advertised hot breakfasts but due to staff shortages there were none and no-one to restock in the continental buffet, coffee was burnt so not great in that department. Manager for the day was sitting down at the checkout desk with one other when there was only one grumpy, stressed out person trying to make coffees, clear tables, and restock, so should have been up helping out in breakfast area. Did get a small discount off our room as compensation but not the point of being in a secluded resort if you have to leave to get food.

The room was fantastic and nestled into the trees. The Kauri Chalet has a wallbed/Murphy bed that folds up for extra room in the living room, which is great! It also had in room laundry that was very useful.

Over priced for what it is. Pauanui is also not a great location as everything closes at 7pm (!!!), we were disappointed in both the Puka Park (locals strongly suggested we NOT eat at the in-house restaurant, even though there is virtually nowhere else to eat dinner in Pauanui!!), and in Pauanui itself which is still a soulless outpost of Auckland where it seems you are required to 'show-off' your new house/car/boat/jet-ski/mistress to a bunch of similar-minded Aucklanders who have all forgotten that beach holidays are meant to be laid-back casual, relaxed and unpretentious ,and preferably undertaken in an old run-down beach house with character soul and ambience. if you want a beach escape on the Coromandel AVOID Pauanui!

A hidden gem in the forest

All the dishes, plates, cups and utensils are sanitised and wrapped inside plastic bags. Even the TV remote controls are sanitised! That gives me comfort in staying the hotel during Covid. The bed is a bit soft for my taste but love the chalet which is surrounded by trees.

Positives - rooms are lovely inside, spacious, and nestled amongst the trees. Great feeling of escaping the city. Nice swimming pool (though due to weather we couldn't use it). Restaurant manager made us amazing margaritas and his service and customer service were top notch. Dinner food was mainly very tasty and well cooked.

To be aware of - some (not all) of the rooms are an actual small hike away from reception and parking areas. Be prepared for a lot of steep uphill walking with baggage, or make sure you select a room lower on the hill.

Negatives - dinner menu is very small, so you'll run out of choices quickly if you're staying a few days.

it was indeed a lovely stay though too short! I have one comment to make though-it's about the food I received - the seafood chowder I ordered had some pieces of shell which I thought was my tooth-fortunately not! I told the waiter and he said he would let the chef know-I thought I would have had an apology because that is not acceptable.

We liked the hotel however a few cobwebs in our suite. We were given no indication that it was on the steepest hill possible to get to the room. No special treatment was given so don't expect it. We had to change out our own linens and soaps and such since the bag was just left by our door. Also my husband fixed their ceiling fan because it was about to fall apart on us and all we received was a thanks. Not that we expected anything in return but some kind of acknowledgement would have been really appreciated.

The restaurant is very poor and food is not at all up to Auckland standards but absolutely Auxkland prices. Meals were soaked in oil, not well seasoned and presentation was very average. Let the experience down overall and has now not lived up to expectations on two occasions in terms of dining. Suggest urgently need to change their chef and staff and look at a menu they can deliver / execute to a high standard or go very simple and align pricing to a more gastro pub fare and menu.
