A highlght from our trip. If you can, definitely stay here at least one night, instead of doing a day-trip to Nara (more time if you can spare it!) The hotel and staff are just fantastic. This gives you an idea of what you can expect from a hotel that receives foreign and local dignitaries and heads of state.

Walking distance from the park/ landmarks and also restaurants and shopping nearby.

The room itself was ample (more than you will probably see in your whole stay in Japan) with modern rooms incorporated into a fantastic historic building.

Great stay in Nara

Nara Hoteal was part of our longer Japan family trip. The hotel has amazing history (Einstein, Japan Royal family, Vaclav Havel .. and many other dignitaries stayed in the hotel over its long history). Hotel itself by now is bit dated, but it has amazing architecture and it is very traditional with beautiful wooden panelings, great bar and garden restaurant - we liked it very much even if we think that JR (Japanese railway company, which owns the hotel currently) should invest a bit into its refit. carets are dated and airconditioning was really noisy. Location is amazing as well - just next to the Nara deer park, which is major attraction in Nara as the formal imperial city,

Deer central - a special experience

A lovely sized room in a great location. The negatives were for us that the bed was a bit hard and the bathroom a bit dated. In saying that this is a traditional hotel and has wonderful history. Bar area very comfortable with good atmosphere and attentive staff.
We were lucky to see deer on our way to dinner in town and from our balcony on the lowest floor of the new building. This very much made our stay.

Its probably the best place I have stayed as of yet, from my exploration its not really missing anything, a few scars here and there yet they tell a story. some parts need restoration, bath tubs and fittings would be the ones actually 'needed' to prevent rotting through and damaging the foundation via inflation. Other wise its good as is. That is my opinion on the matter, I dont know if there is barrier between the tub and the building if so it can be left alone, if my version of a fix would be remove the rust in a circle, and with new sealant put in a lovely patterns

Historic Landmark, All the Comforts

This is a landmark historic hotel, dripping with stories of famous guests. It is grand, warm, welcoming, quiet, comfortable and convenient to Nara Park, Kintetsu Station and many temples. I stayed in the new side which feels very 1990s American hotel style. Roomy for Japan and with a nice balcony. The bar, tea room, sakura lounge and dining room were all comfortable and classy. This is a wonderful place to stay.

This was an amazing base for us in Nara, with 5 start service. Being able to rent e-bikes at the hotel and having the hotel be able to arrange a sightseeing taxi for us were just some of the perks. It is a small walk into town or the park, but all in all very centrally located. Some reviews mentioned road noise, so we stayed in the \"new\" section, but it is hard to imagine it being noisy anywhere. It is a very peaceful location.

We were told the privilege of VIP afternoon tea lounge access, and ended up paying for the cakes with an excessive price tag which was not even noticeably displayed for the customers. Felt like to be cheated, and VIPs supposed to have access to drinks and snacks provided in the room.

Really nice overnight in this beautiful, historic old hotel, perfectly situated to walk up to the park and Todaiji the following day. Lovely dinner in the main dining room. We stayed in a Japanese-style room with a private Onsen tub. Enjoyed looking at all the old pictures. Loved our stay!

The rooms here are very outdated. We had old green carpet and pink tile over the whole bathroom. Our TV was on the same wall as the beds, so you couldn't watch tv from the bed. We asked to move but they said they were full. Our one reprieve from our awful room (and with food we could tolerate) was the bar, but on the second night the whole bar was reserved so we couldn't sit there. The hotel reeks of faded glory. That being said, the service and the hotel area were great.

Historical Hotel living in the past

The hotel has an amazing history and generally is very nice but dated and a bit tired. Our traditional Japanese room, which was semi below ground felt like we were in a dank basement.

For the price, I felt it was a bit much compared to other more modern, family friendly hotels in the Kyoto/Osaka/Nara area.

The hotel is full of historical relevance, and it was to stay at this elegant and historical hotel.

The rooms are roomy, clean, with toiletries and beverages provided.

We ate dinner and breakfast at the hotel - everything was delicious, and very fresh.

Hotel staff was great and nice; Shuttle service to/from Nara Station provided though I wish they told us that there's one, as we had to walk quite a ways to get to the hotel - we hopped on the wrong bus (should've taken a taxi); they have electric bike rentals and it was fun to go to Nara Park with the bikes.

I would recommend this hotel for those who's visiting Nara - staying at this old historical hotel is an experience in itself.

FIVE STAR SERVICE THROUGH AND THROUGH!! By far my best service at any hotel I’ve been at. It started with our reservation and I advised the hotel it was my son’s birthday. They had tons of suggestions for things for us to do and he was THRILLED with everything. From the shuttle service driver who was sweet, smiling and took care of all our luggage without a second thought, to being greeted by staff or when they ran down the driveway with umbrellas when we got caught in the rain to the delicious breakfast and dinner, this was an absolute joy to stay here. The location is perfect and we got to see baby and mama deer roaming the property. If you go to Nara, or honestly anywhere near here, and you don’t stay here, you will be missing out!!!

This is a remarkable historical property. The view from our room was outstanding. The cherry blossoms outside the tea room/bar were breathtaking. The staff went above and beyond to make sure we had a memorable stay. The food in all three restaurants was great.



Keep in mind this hotel’s design is not the current grey and white chic. The style is from another era and that is what is so lovely about it.

This hotel is absolutely wonderful! Beautiful hotel with the kindest staff. The breakfast is absolutely delicious. The grounds surrounding the hotel are beautiful and peaceful. Nara Deer park is just a few steps away. They have a bus that will pick you up at the train station and take you to the hotel. This bus will also take you to the shopping district and pick you up again.
This is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed.
I highly reccomend this historic hotel and we plan to come back and stay again in the future.

My family have been staying at the Nara Hotel for 3 generations. I have finally experienced it for myself as an adult and was not disappointed. The property is stunning and steeped in history. The location is perfect for enjoying Nara park and Sanjo-dori. The staff are kind, the amenities are generous and high qualities and the beds are cloud-like. Please note the hotel is a historical property and should be respected as such. Loud noises are not welcomed and obviously there is no smoking. I think thats very reasonable considering this isn't an average modern hotel.

The standard rooms are a little dated and the bathroom is very small with no counter space. We had to upgrade to a suite ahich was very good but expensive! The restaurant food was OK but nothing really special, even though the staff do try to cooy western style. The hotel staff were superbly helpful in every way to accomodate our needs. Fairly close to Nara Park although when were there in August it was too hot to do much walking. Useful shuttle to both Nara stations. Overall, a very traditional Japanese hotel with fairly rigid standards, good service but expensive.

This is a hotel in the grand style. It won't suit the chrome and glass anonymous i-Phone crowd. Service is as one once expected in grand hotels, so greatly lacking today. Disregard Any negative comments regarding the Nara Hotel. From boarding the hotel shuttle bus, to departing after two nights, not one negative thing happened during our stay.
The bell men immediately carry your bags to the Front Desk for check in. Our room, on the second floor was spacious, quiet, and comfortable. We had three Adults, with one rollaway. The Restroom was large with an executive model of the fabulous Japanese lavatory.
We dined one evening in the Japanese Dining Room, Outstanding.
Two of our traveler’s are sensitive to smoke door and could detect not a trace.
When in Nara, do yourself a tremendous favour and stay at the Nara Hotel.
