This is my second stay and honestly it’s my #1 recommendation for Japan. The Staff are wonderful. He was pretty fluent in English so no need to worry about a language barrier. The rooms are very clean. The lobby is a nice place to relax and even has a massage chair which is great after a hot bath. The location is perfect for exploring the area. It’s about a 6 minute walk from the train station.

Lovely old ryokan in the heart of nara. Housemaster was very kind and room had everything you needed. The little bath house was amazingly clean and well kept for such a small place. Would highly recommend for anyone wanting to visit nara who wants an authentic japanese experience

The traditional room was remarkable. I love the floor sleeping. The place has a nice public onsen. If you are into manga the owner has a huge collection to check out. Also there is a massage chair in the lobby that I recommend for after your bath. This place is tucked back off of the main road so it is quiet. I highly recommend this for a night or multi night stay if available.

The ryokan is very convenient, it is close to Nara park and railway station. Staff is friendly and helpful, the hot tub is a huge plus although you may need to learn the manner of using it beforehand and it's a bit small, the capacity is 2 persons.
However there is no passenger lift available, if you hate stairs you may need to reconsider.

we like everything but the a/c. a/c is not quite cool as u expect from a regular hotel where u can adjust the temperature to your liking. i inform the front desk and he checked it out. unfortunately, 16 C is the coolest it can be. coming here on a summer getaway is not fun to have a “fan cold” room where outside is a 100 F. the front desk dude speqks english whick is q plus.

Great location in Nara. Tatami room with futons and private toilet. Shower and sento (soaking bath) downstairs. The guest house is halfway between a ryokan andlow cost hotel. Old and a little shabby, but very inexpensive for area.Easy walk to train stations and todaiji temple.

Ryokan Hakuhou is in a great location. It’s close the station, local restaurants and shopping. The hotel is clean, and the rooms are comfortable. The staff is very helpful. The WiFi is ok, it was better in the lobby than on the 3rd floor. Overall a good hotel, I would stay again.

A basic but comfortable ryokan in a great location - right in the heart of Nara. Reasonable price. Front lobby reception was friendly and efficient with a nice sitting and reading area. No restaurant but lots of places nearby. We had a spacious and spotless 10 tatami room with en suite bath and toilet so never did use the communal bath. Room had no chairs - just cushions and the futon so eating in room was a bit uncomfortable. Overall I was pleased with our stay and would probably stay there again.

We opted for 2 twin beds and it was amazing. We had a separate balcony and separate dining area. They gave us welcome gifts and hot tea. The beds were soft which was a pleasant change from the business hotels. It had a private women bath separate from the male bath.

Nice family friendly place to stay in Nara

This was a great little place to stay. It is quiet and in a nice area with many close by shops and restaurants. It is also close to Nara Park and the railroad stations.
We chose the traditional tatami mat family room with the private bath. It was a nice big room with plenty of space for 5 people (4 adults and 1 child) and all our luggage.
There are two \"bath houses\" for both men and women downstairs in the main lobby area. My husband loved going down and sitting in the \"hot tub\" after walking all day. We also loved the massage chair in the main lobby too after sleeping on the tatami mats.
Overall a nice, quiet, clean, family friendly place to stay.

Altogether disappointing.

I wish I could rate this higher, because the owners were quite nice. But this was not a ryokan. It was a short-term boarding house. We stayed in a ten tatami mat room, which had a low table, and a \"cubicle\" bathroom - a plastic encased tiny room, with a toilet and a bathtub. Similarly, it advertised an \"onset\" - it was a very small, musty communal bath. The place was dingy - clean enough. But for $182, ridiculous. For $60, it would have been quite fine. But not priced as a luxury inn.

Very nice ryokan in the center of Nara

We stayed one night in a japanese style room with private bathroom, which i found large with respect to japanese standards. The staff was very helpful and very nice. They made a reservation for us at a restaurent in Kobe where we were going the next day and told us all about the lantern festival that was happening. The ryokan is also very well situated between the train station and the Nara-koen park. I found its public paths very relaxing and very well decorated. I would recommend this establishment to anyone who was looking for a ryokan in Nara.

Location fantastic - close to JR station and easy walking to the park. Room was very clean. Futon very thin and needed extra padding from duvet in cupboard. Ensuite toilet but communal bathroom downstairs. We found this stay very expensive for what we got.

The hotel is in central location - walk to Deer Park etc. Nara is a beautiful place, one of my favourites in Japan. The hotel is old but the room was clean and Japanese style bath was really clean and enjoyable. The man running the place was also very friendly.

It was fairly cheap. You get what you pay for.
I was charged extra at the desk because my child was 14 years old .... according to the staff, a \"child\" is 12 years old ~ not according to the reservation site where I made the reservations. The real bummer is that I was charged an extra 2,000 yen when I checked in because of this minor discrepancy. I suspect that the clerk must have felt guilty in the end, however, because he upgraded our room and gave us a room with a private bath. My \"child\" appreciated that.

Pleasant overnight stay, great location

We had a great overnight stay in Nara at the Ryokan Hakuhou. Our room was traditional but with a western toilet. The floor was tatami covered. There was a low table and floor chairs, yukatas and slippers. It was very neat, clean, spacious and quiet. Our only complaint was that the futons were very thin indeed and, being older, we were not yet accustomed to sleeping on the floor. We did not sleep comfortably. Otherwise, the ryokan was great. Inbetween the train station and Nara Park, it was a quick and easy walk to both. Our host at the ryokan was also pleasant and helpful.

OK hotel on one of Nara's main streets. Handy for restaurants, tourist spots and about 500m from JR Nara station.
Not sure why it's a 'ryokan' - did not provide any meals, and only basic spa baths.
Room was ok but quite small. Shared bathroom facilities, not private.

Nara in Cherry Blossom season

Located very close to Nara JR station and main visitor sites the ryokan was very good place to stay for our two nights in Nara. The staff were very good and the hotel was very popular wth Japanese and foreigners alike. The only down side was the intermittent wifi when planning our next day.

First of all, if you never slept on the floor or have back problems, think again about going to any ryokan...
This one is amazing! Awesome staff, great communal bath and the room are the size advertised (and slightly snell of cabbage due to the tatamis but it's ok)
If you can, put some extra layers under/on the mattress. It helps a lot to sleep better!

Nice stay at Ryokan Hakuhou

It was a nice experience to stay in a ryokan. There were 4 of us, so we had a room for 5 with private bath. The staff was courteous and we had no language problem. The hotel and room were clean. I had our luggage shipped from Kyoto and they had already been put into our room when we checked in. I was worried about how to get our luggage down from our 3rd floor room without an elevator, but it turned out there was a luggage elevator across from our room.
Ryokan Hakuhou was about 5-6 minutes away from the Kintetsu-Nara railway station. Next to the railway station and on the hotel street there were many shops and restaurants. We walked to Nara Park, visited the sites, came back, shopped and ate.The next morning, we rolled our luggage to the bus stop across from the railway station for a ride to the Kansai airport. It was quite easy. We would stay at Ryokan Hakuhou again if we ever go back to Nara.

Room was a traditional Japanese room with tatami flooring, futon beds, and a low table. The hotel also had a small hot spring bath, but I didn't get to use it. Price was really high, but I unfortunately went during tourist season, and the hotel is located in a very popular main street.

The Highlight of Our Trip

This was the highlight of our trip. Micki, the host, was so warm and considerate. He made us feel very welcomed. He showed us how to wear yukata, pointed out the top onsens, and made excellent recommendations for nearby restaurants. He even drove us and another guest to the Sea of Japan coast for a couple of hours of sightseeing. It was incredibly generous and spectacular. Our room was beautiful and comfortable, and even had a small sitting area overlooking the river. We felt incredibly lucky to stay at such a beautiful place with such a kind host.

Convenient location

Ryokan Hakuhou is in a reasonably priced option in a convenient location for exploring the top tourist locations in Nara. We stayed on the \"modern\" floor which are nice tatami rooms with an attached room with toilet and basin. The ryokan has the traditional men's and women's baths on the first floor. The only real drawback is the lack of sound insulation which makes it impossible to sleep in in the mornings.

This was my favourite hotel during my stay in Japan. The room was clean and not as small as I was expecting. Sleeping on a tatami felt great. The hotel staff was nice and helpful. At the beginning I was hesitant to use the common bathroom, but there weren't many people in the bathroom and the onsen was surprisingly not too small.

For the money, this was the best place we stayed. We spent 3 weeks traveling around Japan. This Room was the least expensive of all our rooms. However, the room was clean and we had the toilet and sink in our room option. That in room bath was modern, new and clean. Even the common bath and showers exceeded our expectations. The smaller ones provided a lock on the doors for privacy and the larger one was wonderful and always empty. The location was a short walk from the train station on the main pedestrian way. It was another short walk from the guesthouse to the main park and temple on the same pedestrian walk.

This is a somewhat shabby guesthouse with a very friendly staff and a fantastic location. It's overpriced considering it's condition, but what you're really getting is a clean, reliable room within walking distance of both train stations and all the fun stuff in Nara Park. If you're headed to the Nara area for tourism and don't anticipate spending much time in your room, this is a solid choice.

Just bear in mind that not all the rooms have their own bathroom, and there's a weird smell in the the third floor hallway.

Great first experience in a traditional ryokan

Great location not far from Nara station (about 5 mins walk). This was our first time staying in a ryokan...we are a family of five and it was a good sized room that just fitted our futons and suitcases, when the beds were laid out. Staff are very friendly and speak English. A washing machine is available which was very handy. We are not used to traditional Japanese pillows but the ones here were pretty lumpy. If you are looking for reasonably priced accommodation for a family this is a good ryokan.

The ryokan is only a short walk from the station and all the temples. The room was big enough for the 4 of us and very quiet. The public bath is little but then it was only my daughter and I using it. Sadly there's no breakfast at the ryokan but a good cafe down the road from it. Good value for money, well worth using to discover beautiful Nara.

I had a wonderful experience in Nara. This hotel is very close to two main rail stations and walking distance to Todaiji's Daibutsuden, shopping, and other attractions. There is a takoyaki restaurant right outside the hotel called Ichigo Ichie, Echo. I hung out there a bit and regulars would stop by and chat, this was a lot of fun. The cook and the neighbors are lovely. The hotel staff was extremely kind and welcoming, Hotel was clean, nevertheless, it is an old hotel so keep that in mind. My room smelled like boiled plantain leaves - not a horrible smell, just there.

Fabulous Service!

It's a bit of a walk from the train station, especially at night, going uphill and the facade initially did not impress us. The service was amazing and the young man who checked us in went over and beyond in trying to assist us find where we wanted to go. We booked a room with a private bath and I'd strongly recommend paying a little extra for the privacy. We were traveling as a family and we just felt better about having access to the bathroom and shower without worrying about things. The location was close to places to eat and in walking distance to the nearby attractions.

The best part though is the location as it is literally 5 mn walking from all the best spots in Nara!
The room was typical Japanese style, and although we booked a room with shared bathroom the staff was so nice they upgraded us to a room with bathroom.
The room was clean and spacious and the futon were very comfy and we really loved the public bath, nice to soothe your muscles after a day touristing around!
Last but not least: the massage chair in the lobby: a winner after a day out.

Being a rather large \"Guest House aka rooming house\", the 3/4 floor facility had only 2 toilets and one wash basin at least the second floor (where we stayed. The shower was a segregated group shower down on the main floor. The room was clean but quite cramped (double bed.) Only plus was that it was located in the middle of the city and all of the key shrines, statue etc. was within easy walking.

Stayed:
- traditional renewed non-smoking room with private bathroom (end Dec 2014).

Pros:
-very near Kintetsu Nara station and just across from Nara Tourist information office. Easy to locate if you travel into Kintetsunara.
-nice clean private bathroom
-massage chair in TV lounge
-public bath opened till 12am
-owner was personal, storage bag
-good internet connection

Cons:
-smoking area is at the lobby (everyone needs to get pass the open smoking area to reach the reception and the room... and since it is winter, all the doors and windows are closed- so if someone is smoking, the whole area can be suffocating).
-smoke will travel to the lobby and small front pouch (separated by 2 sliding doors) of your room. Smoke, nevertheless, was contained outside the main room- once inside the main room, the smell of cigarette was gone); smoke free provided you never step out of your room!
-no ionizer and humidifier in room
-the bedding smells a little (either from the unwashed futon or blanket)- leaves me with a longer of unpleasant smell.

Helpful pleasant staff in a \"family\" setting

As expected of a Japanese culture, this homely setting ryokan is neat & well organized - from the humble entrance to the rooms. Rows of self service slippers neatly displayed on shoe racks for exchange at door area. Magazines & simple 3 seater sofa on another end. Bare minimum rooms with tatami beds & small tv. Communal showers are outside. Only problem is that the location is some 20 mins walk from Nara JR station.

Great Location for getting around the area

The hotel is not quite your traditional Ryokan, with the lobby and hallways feeling like a fairly modern western hotel. However inside the rooms was lovely, and extremely comfortable. The location was fantastic for getting to both the station and Nara park. We had to explore a little bit to find restaurants, but overall it was a great experience.

Cool Japanese Room

Traditional Room, Non Smoking (Renewed Room - 10 Tatami mats) - This is a very cool room for our group of four. Nice to spend time in the room.

Like the location. Very near the city center and kintetsu line. If you are taking the JR line, you may need to walk a little bit longer.

Partially hidden among all the advertising banners. Open your eyes to see it.

Shared public bath area. Has a little pantry where you can microwave and stuff. Free use of washing machine.

Great newly renovated place to stay.

Don't be put off when you enter and find a lobby that needs some love and updating. The room was modern and super clean. The ofuro was also updated. They spoke a bit of English and helped us pick a fabulous place to eat. It was a wonderful stay. Close to station, Nara park and eating. Everything right at your fingers tips even with 3 children (2 four year olds) we were able to walk every where no problem. Well worth the money.

Fantastic Service & great location

Although the staffs English is not brilliant, nothing is to much trouble for them to make your stay a fantastic experience. I would highly recommend this Ryokan. *****

Old rooms are not good, very dusty and dirty feeling, new updated rooms were good, but small. Location was great right next to all shopping and eating. In the middle between the station and the sightseeing spots. WLAN was great. Could leave our luggage the next day. All in all overpriced for what you get.
