This 5-star hotel is located in Algiers Center, with parks and museums (Bardo, Antique & Islamic Art) in walking distance. Taxis are easy to arrange. My room had a great view over the white city and the Mediterranean. The hotel offers a nice variety of dining options, indoor and outdoor. I like in particular the photo gallery of famous visitors and the beautiful botanical garden.

Beware of nightclub on weekends

Stayed at this hotel mid November 2019 from a Monday to Friday. Monday to Wednesday was wonderful and I do not have anything bad to say about this place. The breakfast was really good, service was good, and room very clean.

Thursday night to Friday morning was a different story. This hotel has a night club and at 1am they had the music blasting. I called the front desk and they said the club will close at 5am. I travel with a sound machine and ear plugs in case things like this happens and both of those could not help as the music was very loud. To top it off, cigarette smell was coming through the vents and reeked the entire room.

Overall: I would not stay here anymore on their weekends (Thursday-Saturday) as a result of their loud music. During the week is fine though.

A historic hotel with decent service. Not the best, not the worst. No A/C in the room, which is common in the region. Most staff were nice, others missed the part where you’re a guest. In the end, I felt safe, slept, and ate... and didn’t get sick or hurt. I would stay here again, but now I know what to expect when comparing to other hotels and their cost. Sometimes the cost is more important, sometimes not, and this was a pretty good overall value.

Beautiful historic hotel overlooking Algiers

I always like to stay in classic historic hotels. I love the rich history and characters that have chosen to stay there. The St. George in Algiers is the most historic hotel, located in a beautiful location overlooking the Bay of Algiers. Many famous stars and heads of state, like Churchill, have stayed here.The stunning Arab-style architecture and the beautiful botanic garden make it a haven of peace and tranquility in an otherwise busy city. The hotel has kept all of its charm from a bygone era, but offers modern amenities and great service. The staff is friendly and efficient. I asked if I could have a room in the older wing and was given room 1211, a large room with a balcony overlooking the gardens, with the Mediterranean sea in the background. Beautiful. The level of service in the restaurant is top-notch (classical French-style service, with soup poured directly into your plate). The swimming pool and recently-renovated spa are outstanding. The pool is covered and heated in Winter but open in the Summer. The steam bath (hammam) and sauna are delightful. I would pick no other hotel! So if you want to experience old world charm with modern amenities, the El-Djazair St. George is the place to stay at in beautiful Algiers!

The staff is witless and rude, the toilets don't flush, the wifi doesn't work, the food is overpriced. I was harassed for bringing some bread into the hotel as it is against the sanitary rules. A hopeless disaster of a place and far too expensive.

I stayed at this hotel in October and November 2017 in this very safe hotel. The location is great and so the staff. I got a room upgrade with a magnificent ocean view. The food is delicious. The terrasse and garden are beautiful, The perfect place to enjoy a delicious homemade mint tea.

Full of atmosphere, a unique place

I notice that many of the reviews of this hotel are poor. I have to say that they don't reflect my own experience. We spent three nights here, and had a lovely stay. It's true that this is not the slick, off-the-peg experience of an international business hotel, but who needs another one of those? If you'd prefer to stay in a renovated Ottoman palace with beautiful architecture, friendly staff and a lovely garden, this is the top place in Algiers. I stayed here over 20 years ago, and the place is exactly as I remembered it, which is mainly a very good thing. Some updating is required - there is room for improvement when it comes to the bathrooms, for instance, though ours worked fine - but overall this is a characterful, and very lovely place. There was a pop-up Greek restaurant on the terrace during our stay, which was a good addition to the hotel, and we had some lovely cakes one afternoon. Reviews had led me to believe that the breakfast was appalling. It wasn't as good as it could have been but it wasn't bad either. There is a real sense of history here - the bar is lined with photos of luminaries from Edith Piaf to Albert Camus who have stayed in the hotel in its heyday, and something of that glamour is still discernible today. Do stay - you won't regret it!

Rooms are are not very clean, broken tiles in bathroom, carpets dirty, lights burned out, AC did not work, had to change rooms because the toilet would not flush. Room service was cold and missing items (salt,butter) one evening they must have run out of tomatos as the salad was only a bunch of lettuce leaves. Will not rtn

Used to be an outstanding establishment, has not been renovated in at least 20 years. Rooms smell of mold. Old carpets line the rooms/hotel, old furniture and amenities. Service is decent. Hotel is beautiful, but rooms are way too expensive for the low quality.

Historic Old City Centre Hotel

The El Djazair St George is an old, historic, hotel in the centre of the diplomatic quarter. It is full of quirky, characterful, features and has....if you like quirky, characterful hotels, a great atmosphere. But, because it is old and historic, it is NOT as crisp, clean and efficient as a modern hotel can be. Personally, I think it's the best hotel in Algiers, but you need to know what to expect if you book here.

Never use this hotel again!

We had a business trip to Algiers. I chose this hotel because one colleague suggested it due to its convenient location, but it turns out the location was ALL the benefit of staying there. The service was very BAD! (1) they didn't allow guests to charge to the room when eating at the hotel restaurants. Guests had to go to the reception to increase the credit limit even if the credit card information is previously provided. (2) there were only one or two receptionists at the front desk who were helping long lines of guests. When I needed help to increase the credit limit, they kept me waiting for 1 hour and eventually served someone else who came behind me! (3) the receptionists had very BAD attitude, and one time I even heard two of them fighting loud behind the door! (4) There were two restaurants in the hotel. When I used one of them, the waiter didn't take the right order and I had to cancel it because the food never came. I will never use this hotel again and I cannot recommend it to anyone else.

The El-Djazaïr.......everyone calls it the \"St George\" by the way.........is a lovely, historic, hotel in the heart of the embassy district of Algiers. It was here that Eisenhower set up his North African HQ in 1942 for a full year. The hotel is full of character, but inevitably with that age and character one has to accept that rooms are not huge. Beds, however, are comfortable and the staff are welcoming and friendly. There's an atmospheric hotel bar where, it seems, everyone gathers to chat and do business......the walls are lined with photos of famous faces.....mainly (because of Algeria's colonial history) French movie stars and singers, but also including Eisenhower (of course), Montgomery and even Kipling. Breakfasts are somewhat unexciting and the restaurants generally are the weakness in the hotel's repertoire, but the St George is still a really good bet if you find yourself in this bustling, historic, city.

Good solution for a week's stay.

Historical hotel, well worth staying there once to see it. Convenient for me because within walking distance of where I worked for a week. Also 20 min walk from the centre of town. I asked for a non-smoking quiet room. I had one on the 3rd floor, facing the bay of Algiers, beautiful but noisy because facing also a boulevard. One facing the garden would be quieter. Sport facilities good, I used them every day (20m pool, 25 m in diagonal, hardly used except week-end, and large gym). Room clean but bed so large (1m80?) that it filled it. Room safe large enough for laptop etc. Wifi fast, I connected several devices. Main drawback: the breakfast. Stale croissants and cakes, minimal choice of cereals and fruits, coffee poor, juice drink instead of fruit juice. There is nowhere close to have breakfast in the vicinity. Also, in this splendid breakfast room, they play the same 1980s elevator music every day. I felt sorry for the staff. Only local newspapers are available. The staff is overall very kind and quite efficient. For dinners, the hotel restaurant is quite good, if not exceptional, and there are a couple of good options nearby. I will probably return for a future business trip because of location, but would try another hotel otherwise. Taxis booked from the hotel charge twice the normal price it seems. Count 1500 DA for airport and 1000 to go somewhere in Algiers, instead of 1000 and 500.

Visiting Algiers on business. Best thing about this hotel is that it is very centrally located and has a classic ambience/traditional touch. it has a botanical garden which is quite nice. but everything else is sub-par: the amenities, service, food, etc. Rooms are not in great shape (i had a Deluxe room on 1st flr), very limited choice for food, there is wifi but internet access is not great. I would not return unless i need to be at the same location for meetings in the future.

The Djazair was once a grand hotel, and it still has plenty of charm, but it's a little tired now. This is made up for by the helpfulness and friendliness of the staff and the location, which is central to the embassy district. Rooms vary enormously in style and quality, but all are perfectly adequate. It is billed locally as a 5 star hotel, but really it isn't....although I actually wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else in Algiers! It just has so much charm that it's worth putting up with the \"tiredness\" of the fixtures and fittings. I still rate it.

L'hôtel est magnifique, les mosaïques, les carrelages au niveau de l'accueil, de la salle de restauration composée de trois restaurants, les lourdes portes, les portes ciselées en bois, tout le charme par endroit du savoir faire de l'époque est remarquable, un hôtels de tradition mauresque. The hotel is historic and full of detail.

My room wasn’t ready as I arrived at 10am, so they leant me a “spare room” just to shower and recover. It turned out to be the North African campaign room, attached to Eisenhower bedroom where the invasion of southern Europe in WW2 was planned. Amazing.

Advice, upgrade to the sea view room.

Nous avons réservé cet hotel pour la troisième fois en 4 ans et nous constatons chaque année une régression globale du service proposé. L'Hotel et le cadre restent très agréables, mais il est dommage que ce lieu riche d'histoire ne soit pas mieux entretenu. Les chambres demanderaient plus de rénovation et d'entretien. Le buffet du petit déjeuner n'est pas à la hauteur du standing de l'hotel !!!
Nous avons du également systématiquement demandé le recodage de la carte/clef de la chambre, tous les jours.

The El Djazaïr hotel is a unique place in Algiers, with a special atmosphere. It's not the most luxurious or modern, and the service can sometimes be rough. But its Moorish-style architecture, ceramic decor, and garden make for a charming stay. On a practical level, breakfast is particularly varied, and the restaurant is a good option for dinner. The most negative point is the very late noise when there's a wedding... or when the tennis court is cleaned too early. You'll need multi-plugs to charge electronic devices from the room's only socket. Very good price for the value and atmosphere if you don't feel lost elsewhere than in an international chain hotel.

Changement de chambre 3 fois en 4 nuits ! La première fois parce que la tringle à rideaux gisait au sol, la seconde fois parce qu’il n’y avait plus d’eau chaude et un bidet bouché, nous aurions préféré ne jamais avoir la 3eme chambre juste au dessus de la salle de danse et du parking, le bonheur jusqu’à 3 h du mat !!!!
L’hôtel n’est absolument pas entretenu comme il se doit ! Où est la gouvernante censée vérifier le travail ? Et les cerbères dans la salle de petit déjeuner, à quoi servent ils ? Le repas du soir est exagéré niveau tarif et ne casse pas 3 pattes à un canard ! Franchement, plus jamais !

Surely a very historic hotel.great history. famouse guests. However, I'm sure neither che guevara nor edith piaf would like it today. Bathroom with rusty fittings, staff unfriendly and little helpful, equipment below standards (one towel for 2 persons, despire complaint), breakfast with drued cheese and salat leaves (but they charged fir two extra breakfast more than for a domestic flight). In europe, the hotel would get at most one or two stars.

L'hôtel St George n'est plus que l'ombre de lui-même. Hormis le personnel du restaurant gastronomique et des femmes de chambre, le personnel d'accueil est à la limite de l'impolitesse, notamment les \"hauts\" responsables. Si le prix des chambres est abordable, les prix des boissons et de la nourriture sont scandaleusement élevés.

On relèvera que cet hôtel est propriété de l'Etat algérien et est donc géré comme une entreprise publique où le personnel est fonctionnarisé! Jamais je n'ai vu un hôtel géré par l'Etat de toute ma vie de fréquent voyageur!

Frühstück war eher durchschnittlich. Es fehlte an frischem Obst und die Kaffeemaschine war wohl nicht richtig eingestellt.
Balkontür lies sich nicht richtig schließen.
Personal beim Empfang war hilfreich bei Wechsel des Zimmers.

Le parfum d'Alger d'avant hier

4 nuit au St Georges. Lieu de séjour des alliés qui y ont préparé le débarquement de 1943. Tradition et modernité, l'histoire et la nostalgie. Bien situé, accueil professionnel et attentionné.

Un grand manque de gestion interne de l’etat des chambres. Hotel à la base de grande classe mais délaissée. Le staff est très sympatique, mais le fait qu’on paie une grosse somme pour un café et avoir un café type nescafé… ensuite il est bien situé pour faire les démarches locales.

Hôtel historique. Cependant, chambre trop vieille, peu confortable, sans climatisation, salle de bain vieille, tuyaux qui fuient. Simple vitrage, fenêtre ne fermant pas bien, énormément de bruit qui rentre.
Pas de café ou de thé à disposition, télécommande de TV ne fonctionnant pas.
