This is the worst ryokan experience in terms of service, food and amenities. The room with a private onsen that we stayed in felt like a dungeon, all enclosed and dark. The private onsen water is just toi hot to soak in The baseboard molding inside the room is all mouldy, cannot imagine we were actually in Japan with such a low standard. Food was way below any Japanese standard. You had to go and get your rice, miso soup and water by yourself in a Japanese ryokan onsen hotel? Difficult to communicate, hardly anyone on staff. Just stay away. Expedia should delist this room.

Stayed in a traditional room with a private Onsen for two nights. Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the staff were friendly to us. The public bath was gorgeous and the private Onsen in our room was so special. Only complaint was our wifi didn’t work, otherwise we had a splendid time.

We stayed 2 nights, half board with private in room Onsen.
Pros: less than 5 minutes walk from Hirayu Onsen bus terminal, great private bath. Public bath has 4 different pools, which was all fantastic. Food is good and service is standard. Good room size.
Cons: facilities are old and dated. There’s some lingering smell in the room. WiFi very weak. Bugs inside the room.
This could be very typical for a traditional ryokan but not to my liking.

The hotel room is very basic and run down. There is no drinking water in the room. The toilet bowl seat does not come with heater and the shower curtain was very dirty. The outdoor onsen is very dirty. There were a lot of dead skin cell, scabs, and debris.

Unfortunately not a very pleasant stay for us. We booked 3 nights and checked out after only 1 night. After travelling 6 hours to get there, the young lady appointed to look after us was rude and unkind, trying to hurry us up to drop our bags and go to dinner. We barely had time for a quick bathroom break and she was phoning us telling us to hurry up because she was waiting. It was a long day so I just let it slide without worry. Dinner was nice but there was not options for your meal. Breakfast was exactly the same. The private onsen was our only highlight but even then they could use some serious updating. All furniture was stained and old which made the property look worn and dirty. The property is close to the bus station for day trips but not much else around in terms of amenities or shops. For the price I expected better.

Amazing onsen! I booked a room with a private open air onsen for end of March 2024 and was blown away at how nice my room and the entire hotel was. The facility was impeccable, food was good, staff was super nice and my room was so great. I was only there two nights and regret not staying longer. I will definitely come back to this onsen. Also, the surrounding was snowy and it snowed the second night, loved it! It felt great to relax outdoors in the warm water! Thank for Onsen staff for such a great experience.

料理内容の改善が必要だと思います。

当日は貸切状態でどこにも人がいなく温泉はいつ入っても1人きりだったのは違う意味では良かった。経営状況を心配したくなるくらい誰も宿泊客がいなかった。

We loved staying in this hotel. The photos online don't do it justice. My husband and I stayed in a Japanese style room with private onsen. It was gorgeous. The staff was very friendly. I highly recommend getting the dinner and the breakfast. It was delicious and such a great way to try a little bit of many different Japanese foods. The hotel feels like an old, rustic, mountain lodge. Very cozy with great views. The public and private onsens were fantastic. We were really plesantly surprised by how much we enjoyed this hotel. Highly recommend!

Excellent onsen, both indoor and outdoor, in terms of hardwares and environment. However, onsen closes at 8:30am everyday is not customer friendly esp. in light of the checkout time is 10am. Both dinner and breakfast menus are satisfactory though not impressive. The restaurant staff is professional but the front office staff is rather lay back. Overall, the hotel is well kept and the stay is value for money.

Beautiful place set in the mountains - the staff were lovely although had very limited English to explain anything and we didn't get any sleep as the beds and pillows were so uncomfortable!! This was the most expensive place we stayed at during our 16 nights in Japan and unfortunately whilst the onsen was lovely our lack of sleep spoilt what should have been a lovely stay. We had previously stayed at another ryokan in Matsumato and their futons were much thicker. Was also disappointed that the spa area closed for cleaning at 8:30am - would have loved a quick spa before checkout at 10am.

Nice ryokan-style hotel

We liked the hotel and its onsen, and the traditional breakfast was very good.
Staff is helpful, albeit it took a while to settle the papers at the desk at our arrival.
Be aware that this hotel IS NOT in Takayama, as its title may suggest, but in Hirayu Onsens, a village 1 hour East of Takayama in the mountains, accessible by bus or car only.

Good hotel but indifferent staff at reception

The hotel is well located. Well appointed . But the staff at the reception was indifferent. The situation was saved by another staff later with the name OKADA.. Mr OKADA was very helpful , answered in good English and volunteered more answers. Whereas the one who checked us in was curt and unhelpful. This must be the he same person I write in an earlier posting from another guest. On the day of departure, other nice staff bided Goodbyes. Feel sorry for other stsff and the hotel just with one bad staff.

Shabby with unwelcoming surly staff

Tradional ryokan but well below par. Shabby on the outside. Dirty stained walls in room and furniture shabby as opposed to just well used. TV the size of a laptop screen and minimal power points. Wi-fi only in the lobby.

Staff very unwelcoming to westerners from check in to departure. We did not have a reservation for dinner but given that the area had torrential rain we decided to eat in. When we asked if it was possible to eat at their restaurant the response was a firm 'No, you eat outside'. No explanation offered, not even a sorry we're booked out or sorry you can't eat here without a reservation just a surly NO. We later asked if we could book a private onsen to be met with another no (possibly booked out???).

The upside to this was that we found a gorgeous little restaurant close by (Yoshi Moto) and we were out of the place first thing in the morning and on the first bus to Kamakochi.

Overall, we were made to feel very unwelcome and it was a very disappointing and overpriced stay.

People booking this hotel should be aware that it is listed on all booking sites as Okada Ryokan Warakutei, instead of Okada Ryokan. The Warakutei part of the hotel is a separate annex, and much more expensive, so please don't assume that you will be staying in Warakutei when booking.

Since I am not a fan of futons I had to mark it down. To be fair I knew that it had futons before we stayed there. The onsens are very well equipped and extremely hot. The food excellent. The mountains and the view of them, even from our lovely room perfect. The stay there was very relaxing.

Brief stay that rejuvinated our trip !!

Got there very late under slippery/snowy condition - Paid ¥ 13,000 for Taxi - Missed our Wagyu Beef Dinner - ate a eat a chocolate bar ... But it was All Well Worth it !!

The night was young and the moon was full.. so jumped in the onsen outside soon as I got there.. -6°C and flakes of snow settling on your face as you wash away the fatigue..

And what better, Woke up to a beautifully assembled breakfast next morning ... Next Destination ==> Kanazawa via Shin-Hotaka

I booked this hotel without dinner and breakfast. I found out that I could book onsite. However upon arrival, I was told by a male receptionist that booking for food needs to be done before arrival. I thought that was unhelpful even though he told us we could dine at few nearby restaurants. I fretted as it was 6.30pm and the sun has set long ago. My husband and I were both hungry. It's cold outside. It was our first time in such a remote but beautiful area. I was disappointed. However, I approached Ms Megu for help. Especially for breakfast as it would be too cold to walk outside in search for breakfast. Although she couldn't quite understand me as I spoke hurriedly in English, she asked her colleague Ms Wang YuJun to enquire in Chinese so that she could understand me. Wow that's an extension trying to understand customers' needs. She got us an in house Japanese cuisine breakfast, a charger and 2 rounds of private hot spring booking. She even worried about our dinner. My husband was blown off by her customer service and warm personality and her pride in doing her job well. I will come back if this hotel has such good employee like Ms Megu - passionate about hospitality.

Room Smells of Cigarette and Unhelpful Manager

My initial booking was 2 nights but our experience was so bad that my wife and I had to leave after the first night.

The room has a strong cigarette smell that I gave me a sore throat within 15 mins. The hotel manager rejected my request for another room without any sympathy nor apology, he simply offered to spray my room that obviously didn’t help. The bathroom and towel also smells bad.

We also found that the hotel only offered small Japanese-style pillows, I was once again rejected stone-cold by the same hotel manager about my request for regular sleeping pillows. Luckily, I ran into a much friendlier front desk staff that night (after the hotel manager had left), who offered to try his best to find me something, and to our delight 2 normal pillows showed up in our room after dinner!

That night my wife and I simply couldn’t sleep, I got a sore throat from the cigarette smell and on-and-off we slept for only about 3 hours. If weren’t for the regular pillows offered by the other friendly staff, I doubt we would have had any sleep at all. At the end both my wife and I caught a cold the next day from the lack of sleep, and we only managed half of our hike in Kamikochi.

I have been in enough countries and stayed at many 2/3 starts hotels before, this is the first time that I left early and had our 2nd night forfeited. Unless you have no expectation, don’t let this hotel and its manager ruin the beautiful Kamikochi and Japan for you!

We enjoyed our stay on July 11-13, 2016.
The reception clerk on checking in was very polite and helpful. The room has a nice view in front of green mountain.
The authentic breakfast was served a dedicated room and it was very romantic. We visited Kamikochi, Shinhotaka Robeway, and Narikura Highland using Okada Hotel as the base.

Lovely experience

We stayed here for a few nights in January on our honeymoon. It was charming. The desk staff came out to meet us in the middle of a blizzard. They don't speak a lot of English, but they spoke enough to make check-in and booking services very easy. Our room was Japanese-style and lovely with a little sitting area and terrace that looked out over the mountains. The baths are fantastic and great for an outdoor soak even in the cold. The hotel was perfectly located about a block from the bus station and a nice, easy hike from the waterfall. Get the half-board plan - the multi-course meals were great fun.

The hotel staff was wonderful; despite the language barrier, I could truly feel their warmth and hospitality. I was very satisfied with the room facilities and the hot spring (onsen) experience. However, I was quite disappointed with the Hida beef hamburger steak—the bottom was burnt, which was a letdown.

客房內就有室內和室外的溫泉池可泡湯是驚喜之一。
飄著雪在室外的大衆溫泉池泡湯真是驚喜之二。
缺點:但房間內乾淨的廁所ㄧ開門就有臭味，可能是老舊管道的緣故吧！另一點是枕頭很高，睡得很不舒服，這應該是可改進的。

As a gold member who travels frequently and has stayed in numerous onsen hotels, I must express my deep disappointment with this establishment. It is, without a doubt, the worst hotel I have ever experienced. From the moment I checked in at 7 pm, I encountered a series of issues that made my brief stay until 9 pm utterly unpleasant. The hotel unreasonably charged one night for two extra people, equivalent to a room charge, despite only requesting extra futons for my guests who were staying for just one night. The room could accommodate four futons, but I still had to pay the cost of an additional room. The lack of customer service, worn-out rooms, and unpleasant odors in the room and hallway further added to my dissatisfaction. The absence of complimentary water and the exorbitant prices of the vending machines were also disappointing. Clients were required to change clothes on the first floor and walk naked down 20 steps to reach the onsen, which was inconvenient. Although the onsen area itself had a nice view, the changing area appeared to be poorly maintained and lacked cleanliness. The breakfast and dinner were mediocre and failed to impress. To top it off, the hotel's Wi-Fi was unavailable throughout the night, making it impossible to stay connected. While the hotel's location near the station is convenient, and the lobby and exterior appear impressive at first glance, potential clients can make their own choice before booking a stay at this hotel.

As a gold member who travels frequently and has stayed in numerous onsen hotels, I must express my deep disappointment with this establishment. The lack of customer service, worn-out rooms, and unpleasant odors in the room and hallway further added to my dissatisfaction. The absence of complimentary water and the exorbitant prices of the vending machines were also disappointing. Ryokan tradicional para experiencia 100% japonesa

El hotel es un ryokan clásico muy bonito y con bonita decoración para lograr una experiencia auténtica. Cogimos la habitación tradicional con onsen privado interior y exterior y media pension. El check in tiene que ser antes de las 18h, llegábamos tarde y llamamos pero no hablan nada inglés. Al llegar nos enviaron directos y con las maletas al comedor porque la cena estaba servida (fue violento y muy incómodo). Comida muy cuidada con muchos platos típicos de Japon. El desayuno igual de cuidado que la cena y con platos japoneses (ni café, ni pan, ni fruta... pescado, huevos, sopas, algas...). El personal del restaurante muy atento. El onsen de la habitación bastante descuidado, podría estar mas limpio y le faltaba mucho mantenimiento. El baño olía bastante mal.

Staffの方がほぼ男性のみなのでちょっと驚きましたが、対応は問題なし。
部屋の鍵、下駄箱の鍵の双方を持ち歩くのは不便。
食事はまあまあ。
部屋に風呂＆こたつありGood。但し露天風呂は若干泡が浮いており？？
冷蔵庫にstockなし、コーヒーも無いのはちょい不満。
