It was a privilege to stay in this hotel. Wonderful architecture and characterful accommodation. The staff are very friendly and welcoming, and the food is excellent. If you like bland custom built corporate chain hotels this is not for you. But if you would like a unique experience and to know that by staying you are helping to fund its renovation then the Grand Hotel de l’Abbaye will suit you very well.

The room is ok. Missing instruction guide for the safety box . The tv is so tiny , missing english channels. Many stairs cases no elevetors. We had difficulty as my husband has difficulty with stairs cases. As he easily get tired due to lungs problem. And beside he has a wheel chair and a walker.

La chambre « économique» (à 120EUR la nuit tout de même) est à éviter.
Ça sent le moisi, très humide, c’est bas de plafond, de la moisissure dans la salle de bain et c’est très bruyant car une porte donne sur l’extérieur.

Such a unique place. Super nice staff. Just a wonderful experience. There is no elevator, so pack light, but the stairway is worth the climb. You’ll know what I mean once you’ve seen it. ;-)

What an amazing location with the nicest genuine staff we’ve encountered. The Hotel Abbey has an amazing history and is like being transported back in time . Sympathetic renovations have kept the olde world charm of this amazing building with its beautiful views over the Loire river and bridge.
We arrived late after a long drive from lake Annecy but we were given an amazing meal cooked on a wood burner and hand made deserts that that make in house that would shame some five stars .

Do yourselves a favour and visit this amazing establishment and chat to the owner , he’s a lovely gentleman .

Nous avons été très déçus par cet hôtel. Piètre rapport qualité-prix. Notre chambre manquait d’attention, basse de plafond et assez sombre. La propreté n’était pas parfaite, une serviette sale et des miettes, dont un bretzel apéritif par terre.
Certes le personnel était accueillant et l’hôtel est en plein centre-ville. Mais pour presque 90$/nuit, clairement, ces deux points ne rééquilibrent pas l’offre.

The property is truly unique and special. Staff are very friendly and helpful, Location is great- easy to explore and walk around Beaugency. Food is superb, both breakfast and Dinner. The basin tap temperature control was odd. It started off cold then quickly turned to hot no matter which direction you turned the lever. A minor issue but otherwise highly recommended.

The building itself has been turned into a hotel functionally but in keeping with the history of the building. The staff were really friendly and helpful, offering to help. Historically interesting in a pretty town

The hotel building is full of character in a lovely location by the river. Very close to the pretty town centre. Breakfast was good with many local products. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant with its historic rotisserie. Staff were very friendly.
I would recommend this hotel to anyone.

Had a lovely stay at this hotel. This is a beautiful old building that is being lovingly restored. The room was clean and comfortable with a modern bathroom.
We had dinner in the restaurant and the food was really good, cooked on an open fire.
The staff are friendly and helpful.
Breakfast was good, products from local monasteries Loved the freshly squeezed orange juice.
The only slight negative was that parking is limited, we got the last space. There is ample free parking across the road, but we were travelling back from a family holiday with a fully loaded car, so wanted to be on site.

Very disappointing

We were so disappointed by Grand Hotel d'Abbaye. Restaurant never opened, bar closed by 9pm, hotel tired and noisy from the neighbouring karaoke bar. We booked 3 nights and regretted it.Beaugency is a bit dull itself wth no memorable restaurants that we found. As for the hotel, its tired and a huge disappointment, go somewhere else.

Loved this hotel….. the room (water view) was huge, big bathroom well appointed. The building is really quite something. Ok, the windows were original and not particularly sound proof so it was a little noisy, but this didn’t bother us. I just wish I had more time to enjoy the lovely sitting rooms….. I will go back if I can…

A beautiful sanctuary on the Loire

After 2 weeks of covid on our holiday we arrived at this beautiful hotel for a stop on our journey home. We were stunned by the location, welcome and rooms. Breakfast was excellent and we enjoyed a stroll around this charming town, ancient church and history. Ian Fleming was right to say you should see Beaugency before you die. It was the best bit of our holiday.

Our room was on the 4th floor with many steps to climb. There was no Porter nor any offer of help from the person at the reception desk. The two members of staff we had occasion to talk with ( one of whom may have been the owner/manager) were unsmiling and quite uncommunicative.
I should also say that when we asked for rooms on a lower floor we were told that since we had booked through Expedia, we were not able to change our rooms. We were also told that by booking through Expedia we were paying much more than we would had we called L'Abbaye direct, and that in future we should book directly with them. We will never be back to L'Abbaye!

Absolutely beautiful!!! One of the best hotels ever, the historical rooms and the grand staircase were breathtaking. The history of this Abbey is amazing and the rooms have a bathroom that is very updated with a great bathtub! Parking is onsite and plentiful and great restaraunts and the town center or within walking distance. We only stayed one night but I wish I could have stayed longer!!! I enjoyed this small town charm better than my visit to Paris, that’s how amazing this hotel was. The young man working the desk was so pleasant and helpful, he even served me wine while I was sitting in the grand parlor, I hope to return here one day!!

Charming hotel with great breakfast

It was a great experience to stay in the old Abby. Breakfast there was the best breakfast we had for our whole trip in France with great view seeing the Sein river and the bridge. We got there at night so it was a bit hard to find the entrance and there was no sign pointing to which door the reception is. The person who helped us to check in was very helpful. She even helped my friend carried the big luggage up the stairs. We stayed on the 4th floor and there is no elevator. Overall we are really impressed with the hotel and definitely will come back to stay.

We stayed here in Beaugency as a first stop on a driving trip through the Loire Valley. It is located about 1.75 hours south of Paris Orly. It is located only about 12 kilometers from both Chambord and Blois so it made a good base. Beaugency is a beautiful village with a nice choice of restaurants as well as it’s own Château and 12th century church. Highly recommend!

Pleasant hotel in great location

The hotel looks very grand and is in a fantastic location next to the Loire in the beautiful town of Beaugency. Part of an old Abbey, the building is full of original character features and the rooms are old monks quarters.

We had a superior room which was large and on the top floor overlooking the river. The room was nice enough but smelt badly of damp due to the sealant around the bath being old and letting water through. It felt a bit tired - not just old (which is part of the appeal).

The hotel has lovely raised outdoor seating areas and a small garden that is lovely. Hotel L’abbeye is a nice hotel in a great location as long as you are happy with slightly flawed and tired rooms.

It was great staying what was once an abby. The rooms look old but they are mostly clean. The bathrooms could use a little help, but remember your going for old and ancient! It was a fun place to stay and the town is very down home feeling - the cutest town that we stayed in our entire trip. If you like hussle and bussle this is not the place. It was a little further from the Chateau's than I expected. About one to one and half hours to most of them. Fun little restaurants that were walking distance.

Great spot on the Loire river . Free parking across the road. Very friendly helpful staff. Absolutely gorgeous old building ( an Abbey) with great rooms and very comfortable beds.
Buffet breakfast good value and includes some things the monks make. very good value.
Amazing old place to stay but very comfortable - everything worked perfectly.
Easy walk ( 5 minutes) up the cobbled street to restaurants. Would highly recommend it.

I loved this hotel.

Fantastic hotel in location, overlooking the Loire and a sometimes busy but beautiful bridge. It was even cooler inside--great old feel it. Old style but wonderful big room with old windows opening to the Loire. Comfortable bed. Good bath. Didn't eat breakfast as pricey at 16€ but dining area was lovely. Just loved the gestalt of this place. And a lovely and picturesque small town.

This building with it grand staircase leading to good sized bedrooms was extremely comfortable. The breakfast in the morning was outstanding. Delicious preserves for the freshly baked range of breads, cheeses and cold meats along with many other options well displayed on the central serving table. Orange juice was freshly squeezed on the day and a range of teas and coffees made the meal exceptional.

The hotel is very charming and true to the pictures. The room was clean, spacious, well appointed and had a wonderful view of the river. We were surprised by vouchers for dinner at a nearby restaurant, a nice bonus. Although we skipped breakfast, they had a great breakfast area and food selection. Loved the atmosphere of the old abbey with it's comfortable lounge areas, grand staircase and long, wide hallways. Would highly recommend staying if you are in the area.

Very, very disappointed

This was an very expensive stay but we looked forward to something exceptional. It fell so far short in every respect. The lingering memory is the smell of urine from our toilet - much like the public toilets - nice! The bathroom had a very old suite, black mould on the mastic, burn hole in the plastic light cover, thin old towels. The room was dusty. The outside lights full of cobwebs.

No water provided with the room (35 c on the day) and a mini bar with a fridge that didn't work.

In the evening the staff wouldn't serve drinks as we weren't eating.

Rather than a special treat we felt we were staying with the Addams family. The owners should be ashamed of what they are doing to a fabulous building.

We also had the impression we had been overcharged.

We stayed at wonderful hotels at half the price.

The abbey is grand

Lovely imposing abbey on the river. Unfortunately due to the weather we were unable to make use of the courtyard. The room was on the top floor, up a very grand staircase. I don't think that there was a lift. Due to time in the morning we didn't have breakfast but it did look good. Room was spotless.

This hotel has seen better days and the bedrooms need refurbishing. It looks grand from the outside and the hallway and stairs are magnificient. But the bedrooms are tired and need a complete refurbishment, including the bathroom.
There was only one member of staff available to check people in, show them to their rooms, serve drinks in the bar and do whatever else needed doing. We also thought breakfast was expensive at 16 so went to a cafe. We also could not get the wi fi to work though we both entered the correct code.

Small medieval hotel in a very cozy town (kind of in the middle of nowhere). Used to be a monk abbey...now converted to a hotel. Great experience, great for a (1 night) stop over....and feel you're going back in time. If you're used to the large hotel chains, this is not the place for you... Great breakfast.

I loved this place. My husband and I booked this place at the last minute for a one-night stay during October. It was a wonderful surprise. The building was beautiful and the rooms were spacious and clean. The breakfast was amazing. During a 28 day stay in a variety of hotels and chateaus in Europe, this was our favorite. The location was perfect, along the Loire River. My only complaint is that the bed was rather hard. I would absolutely come back here.

A grand hotel for the upper Loire

Stayed three nights during a tour of France. Impressive building, once part of the old Abbey next door (well worth visiting, incidentally). Great views across the Loire, right by the bridge on whose tolls Beaugency grew rich. Warm welcome. Excellent staff. And the public areas are stunning and stunningly furnished. You sense the age of the building. Lovely terraces and grounds outside.

Our room too was magnificent, with lovely period features. Very comfortable bed. Good bathroom facilities. Superficially clean. But the whole place needs a deep clean. The floor tiles need a scrub. The sheets were clean, but the bedspread was not.

It would not put us off returning, however. Of the seven hotels we stayed in during our tour it was a favourite. The breakfast buffet was spectacular, very monastic in its presentation with lots of produce from other abbeys, some of it quite unusual. And when the number of guests warrant it, they serve an evening meal. Quite expensive, but beautifully cooked and presented (the meat cooked on a rotisserie over an open fire), dining in a lovely room overlooking the wide river.

Car parking on site quite limited. The hotel was not that busy during our visit, but there did not seem to be as many spaces as rooms.

Wonderful and historic, with just enough quirkiness to leave long lasting impression. Breakfast selection of Abbey produced and supplied cheeses, ham, eggs, yoghurt, jams, chutneys and other wonders, mean get down early and stay for hours.Late evening service too close to careless to be entirely forgiven . Beaugency a great location for touring the Loir valley with plenty of quality restaurants.

History comes alive here

We had a one night stay in mid August with our two children and loved the town, and especially the hotel. Being from Canada, where we consider something 100 years old an 'antique', it was humbling to visit, and a privilege to STAY in a building with such a long and storied history. My husband was so taken by the Abbey that he returned the following week (I had to return to work) for a three day stay with the children, using it as a base for day trips to Chambord, the DaVinci museum etc. The breakfast was an experience unto itself… Brush up on your French history (Joan of Arc etc) and you'll really appreciate this museum hotel.

Wonderful stay at an Abbey overlooking the Loire!

We really loved this hotel. We wanted to stay 2 days outside of Paris before staying in Paris and flying home. Being an old Abbey, it was amazing just to walk the halls and stairways. The town was really quaint, right along the Loire River. We walked the paths along the river and roamed through the town. We had just come from visiting several cities in Italy, so it was nice to be in a quiet town and relax. During the day, there is an open market with foods, clothes, jewelry etc. We bought some bread, meats and cheeses and had a picnic along the Loire that night for dinner. The town also has historic ties to Joan of Arc, it was one of the towns where she led a battle. Although the breakfast was a little pricey, it was full of homemade breads, yogurt, fruits, jams, cheeses, meats, fresh squeezed orange juice, etc made by monks. They also had numerous teas,herbs, supplements, etc. If you don't appreciate the local foods and want a simple breakfast, it would be cheaper to just grab something elsewhere. But we enjoyed it and ate so much we did not need lunch. They had a nice patio area as well that overlooked the river.

The best of france!

My husband and I had the pleasure of staying here and what a pleasure it was!! The rooms are sweet and simple, but the history and the feeling within the abbey is just splendid. The breakfast the next day felt as though you had taken a step back and were visiting lords or ladies being treated as absolute royalty and the setting of the hotel within Beaugency has been our inspiration to make the move from the U.S. to France. A true and simple treasure, and be sure to say hello to the abbey's poltergeist!

Good in parts, but room cleanliness very poor

The room was not clean. There were hairs in the bed, a hairy hair clip on the floor, and a urine stain on the bathroom floor. The bed covers were dusty and had a general feeling of being dirty and unwashed. The breakfast was lovely, good selection, good quality of food, and a wonderful range of their own or local products

Great feel of Middle Ages History

We enjoyed staying in this historical place, where every small detail showcases the spirit of Loire Valley. Sunrise view on the bridge from the hotel room was breathtaking!

Not one to miss if you appreciate ambience.

Lovely hotel on the spectacular River Loire which reflects the heritage of Beaugency. Staff extremely helpful and pleasant. Only drawback is lack of lift for transporting heavy luggage.

Fantastic Hotel

What can we say other than this Hotel was truly amazing!! By far one of the best hotels we have stayed in. We shall be coming back very soon. The staff were very helpful and friendly, beds were really comfy and rooms were lovely and cosy too. Should be a 5 star hotel not 3 as stated in advertisements.

Extraordinary and beautiful building

Excellent service. The girl on reception couldn't have been more helpful or kind. Dinner, sitting in the dining area overlooking the river was excellent, the meat having been cooked on a rotisserie within the dining room was good. The breakfast, although expensive, was sumptuous. well worth the money. We shall be back.
