We were initially disappointed to hear a week before arrival that the honeymoon suite was unavailable due to repairs, but what followed was nothing short of wonderful.
Our replacement room was beautiful, and the moment we saw those dramatic, serene mountain views, any lingering \"what ifs\" melted away. It’s the perfect escape to slow down and breathe. Even the winding, adventure-filled drive there makes the arrival feel earned. The food was another major highlight with fresh, healthy breakfasts and deeply satisfying dinners. The sauna was incredibly relaxing.
But what truly made our week were the people. The staff immediately made us feel genuinely welcomed. Theano went above and beyond to ensure we felt special and well looked after (more than making up for the suite situation). Joanna brought a warm, genuine smile to every dining experience. Last but not least, Maria was wonderfully sparkly, laugh-out-loud funny with a lovely touch of sassiness and gave the best local recommendations.
The Monastery Estate Mountain Retreat quietly exceeded our expectations in the way only soulful places can. Highly recommended!

Sadly it is currently a building site. It is difficult to enjoy a place when all you can hear are noisy machines and workmen banging. My room wasn't ready when I arrived so I was made to move part way through my holiday. My terrace was overlooked by workmen on scaffolding so I couldn't relax outside. The room had poor sound proofing and every morning I was woken just before 7am to the noise of reception/cleaning staff arriving. The advertised daily spa service was closed for the whole time I was there. The advertised garden and bar do not exist. The advertised peaceful retreat does not exist. However, Maria and Joanna on reception were very friendly and welcoming and my room was kept spotlessly clean. The surrounding countryside is beautiful and there is a friendly taverna in the village.

Relaxing luxury

We had a phenomenal stay here. Complete luxury. Beautiful private rooms, with amazing terrace area with private pool. Food served to your room was fantastic quality. The staff could not do more for you, we were even brought complimentary wine to our room when our evening meal took slightly longer than expected. Reception staff gave great recommendations of where to go/explore/eat. Overall an amazing relaxing stay in a gorgeous location with lovely staff who are a credit to the hotel.

To say that our stay here was excellent is truly an understatement. Crete was more than I could have ever dreamed of, and this hotel played a huge part in that. The drive to the hotel is definitely not the easiest drive, but it is so worth it (very windy road up and down the mountain, it is all paved and there are guardrails but very little light at night). Being in the mountains and away from the city was so quiet and relaxing and the town in the area felt so authentic and non-touristy, it was exactly what we were looking for! The staff were so friendly and were always attentive and making sure we had everything we needed. The staff recommended two restaurants (they actually recommended more than two, but we were only able to try 2 of them), and they were the two best meals we had during our 2-week stay in Greece. The hotel was very clean, and the room was excellent, we were actually offered an upgrade upon arrival. The pool was so refreshing, and the bed was extremely comfortable. As for being walkable/drivable, there is a restaurant in walking distance that was amazing. And the town of Sougia is just a short 5–10-minute drive down the road and is 100% worth the short drive. Chania is about 1.5-2-hour drive, and because it is through the mountain it will take every bit of that time and be on a lookout for goats. And Heraklion is about 3.5-4-hour drive. Thank you so much for our stay here it was amazing! We look forward to returning to Crete and staying here again.

AMAZING Property & Staff!!

Our stay was spectacular!! I can't recommend this hotel enough. The rooms were amazing and we even had an oversized plunge pool. The location is unbelievable - mountains surround you. The staff went above and beyond (e.g., they met us at our car with umbrellas as it was raining out, noticed on my passport it was my birthday so prepared a free cake for me, etc.). If you are going to be in the area please consider this hotel. Also, if you are still planning your vacation look into this area as it was great place to spend a few days (e.g., hike to Lissos, enjoy Sougia beach/restaurants, drive to Paleochara, etc.).

I had the most amazing stay with my husband in July. The lovely ladies who run the hotel go above and beyond to make your stay as comfortable and memorable as possible. Sougia is very remote, quiet and has a \"disconnected\" feeling, which is amazing if you want to really unplug and relax, don't come here expecting to party! The restaurants at the beach serve the most delicious food I had in Crete, and the hotel restaurant is equally yum. The views are breathtaking, and it is worth coming for the views alone. This is a really quiet place and I think it's important any travellers come with that expectation to avoid any disappointmemts :). The only thing I didn't love was the drive from Chania, I am not a very confident driver and the roads are very windy, but if I managed I thibj anyone can manage (just drive slowly and move out of the way for any impatient drivers). Thank you so much to the whole team for being so king and welcoming ❤️

We had a wonderful stay at Monastery Estate Mountain Retreat. The villa was relatively small, but had everything we needed, and was sufficiently private (a note: it wasn’t very easy to understand the difference between categories that have a private pool - a few more description points or photos might be helpful). The pool terrace was well thought through. We’ve had two meals at the hotel, dinner and breakfast, and found both very tasty (I can highly recommend Cretan breakfast). We have also used spa facilities (sauna and steam bath) and, while the overall experience was relaxing, there are three improvement points: sauna seemed to heat up only on the top benches while having cool air on the bottom bench; the benches in the steam bath were cold; there was a bit of unpleasant smell in the spa area. The staff of the hotel was very attentive and helpful, and very punctual in room service. The last, but very important point: we had managed to have an unforgettable early morning walk in the nearby Lissos gorge and a fantastic swim in Paralia Lissos beach, that knowing about these “things to do”, we’d stay longer in the hotel, for, at least, 2-3 nights. Overall very positive experience - we recommend!

5 stars for the Monastery collection!

Amazing service and beautiful hotel quietly nestled in the mountains. The breakfast was divine and such a great variety. Our room came with a jetted tub on the patio and it filled quickly with hot water, nice way to relax.

We ended up staying at another monastery collection in Chania the next night we loved out stay so much.

Crete mountain escape

Fantastic new hotel. The suites are great and loved the private pool. There were some downsides - not the greatest sound insulation between rooms, minimal privacy at your outdoor pool and the lack of breakfast. The last one we were aware of, but it would be a more luxury experience if they brought it back. They said it was because of covid-19, understandable, but all other hotels we stayed in Crete still offered breakfast. So seemed a bit strange.

Great spot to escape for a few days to see a very different side of Crete.

The hotel and its rooms are stunning! Perfect place to relax with beautiful views on the mountains. The staff is very kind and will arrange anything that will make your stay a great one! 5 minutes away by car from the small village of Sougia and its beach, which offers a few great options to have lunch or dinner.

Wow, vilken plats och vilken fantastiskt bemötande. 3 minuters promenad till en riktigt trevlig Grekisk restaurang där.Monica tar emot med så god mat.

Sougia finns på 9 minuters vila stånd där vi varmt kan rekommendera Tzitziki för såväl frukost, lunch samt middag. Deras omeletter.är.gelt amazing!

L’hôtel est à l’endroit sympathique et au calme , celui-ci se trouve un petit peu dans la montagne , cet établissement, reste un peu isolé , idéal pour se reposer quelques jours , nous avons pris une chambre avec une piscine privée, dommage que celle-ci ne soit pas chauffée dans certaines périodes , la piscine était belle, mais nous n’avons pas eu la jouissance d’en profiter , trop froid au mois d octobre , cela reste un bel établissement , je conseille à tout le monde

Fabulous place with lovely staff! Absolute reco!

We loved our stay there. It's a great place to relax or to start tours to various gorges, mountains or beautiful, hidden beaches. The staff is lovely and has the perfect recommendations for whatever you planning to do!
If we come back to Crete we will stay there again!

Hôtel en pleine nature. Personnel très sympathique, aux petits soins. Sougia n’est pas loin mais vous êtes à 2 minutes à pied d’une taverne très sympathique à Moni où vous pourrez dîner le soir et prendre des petits déjeuner le matin. Séjour en Octobre super température.

It was amazing. Loved the premium room with lots of space. Good AC. Jewel is the small terrace with own pool and view on the mountains. The women that worked there made sure we are very happy :) Taverne next door is mega cute with good food, lovely terrace.
