We did not expect a 2 story condo with 1.5 baths, a kitchen and 2 balconies decks. It was beautiful in the pine trees and you could hear a pin drop. There was a gas bbq and a wonderful indoor pool and jacuzzi. It is an older property that could use some screen doors to open some sliders and a few repairs with kitchen drawers that fell out. We should have brought salt, pepper, foil as we did not bring some of these basics. Overall we had a fabulous stay and would like to return again.

Great mountain location! Easy and beautiful drive to Arnold. The resort was family friendly and had great amenities for the kids. Indoor pool and hot tube was great for the day it was raining. The pool table, theater and game room kept our kids entertained and happy. The lodge we stayed at was perfect for a family of 4 and located right next to a creek. The drive to get some snow play was only another 15-20 minutes. It was such a relaxing getaway for our family. We highly recommend!

Great location with nice amenities. The condo we stayed in was definitely run down. Beds were uncomfortable. And heat doesn’t really get to the bedrooms. Otherwise, spacious and convenient with kitchen and multiple bathrooms. Short drive to the store, restaurants and snow play.

Nice property. Clean, comfortable & quiet. Clubhouse has a pool, hot tub, & sauna. There's also a small game room & movie room. We went for a couples get away, but will definitely be back with family. The property is close to big trees, national park, Murphy's, Columbia, Jamestown, lots to do in the area. The bar and Grill at the golf course it's nice for a casual meal.

A perfect hideaway

First I want to say that the property itself is beautiful and for the most part staff were helpful and friendly. In fact we hope to visit the property again. My middle of the road marks are because many of the amenities were not available - hot tub, sauna and gym. The gym being closed is mentioned on the website, however there was no mention of the other two. It was also not mentioned at check in. I saw a posted sign on the pool door about the hot tub. Which prompted me to ask about the sauna because it was a cold weekend and something we intended to utilize. The post is also a bit misleading showing photos of “trails” that don’t exist on property. It’s fine if you have to go to them, but there is no indication of that. I would suggest revising the post to take out photos of trails or better label them. But as I mentioned, regardless, it’s a beautiful little spot and one we hope to go back to when the amenities are all running!

We enjoyed our stay at Mountain Retreat Resort. The unit we stayed in was clean, quiet and comfortable. The bed we slept in was very comfortable. We loved having the decks and patio to eat outside and enjoy the mountains. The unit we stayed in needed a little updating but it was nice and clean. We will be back. Make sure to read papers given to you at check in they have updated information that is not in their binder or online. Dishes must be put into dishwasher and turned on, all garbage needs to be taken out of wastebaskets and put in kitchen garbage can, all dirty towels need to be put into one bathtub only. Or there may be an charged extra. With that being said we loved our stay.

The staff are so friendly & kind - thanks to Sheila, Maryellen and Cherie for making my stay pleasant. The condo was so big, it was kind of big for a single person so I'll be back and bring my friends.

The building architecture and design is very retro - late 70s-early 80s. The high ceilings with beams, smoked glass and brass light fixtures -- when I turned on the TV, the program that was on was \"Ancient Aliens Declassified\" -- all combining to make me feel like a little kid on vacation. The washer/dryer were very new and worked great. I was able to dry my towel after visiting the jacuzzi/pool area. I only wish the bath tub was slightly bigger for a nice relaxing soak in my room.

Pool and hot tub CLOSED. This was not indicated on the Expedia site and was a big reason for booking this particular property; the indoor pool and hot tub. Supposedly, the hot tub is out of commission for the next few months. They had a nice pool table and some old DVD movies to check out, also games and foosball which was fun. Also, sleds available to check out . The property itself was like taking a step back in time, in the late 80’s early 90’s with decor. I personally thought it was neat but some people might not like that it’s outdated. Another downside was back deck could have been shoveled. The steps were very icy and slippery which could be a hazard. Personally, I think I would’ve given it five stars if the indoor pool and hot tub were working.

I think this area is absolutely beautiful but the unit that we were staying in was in bad need of remodeling and updating. It also didn't help that the hot water heater was on the fritz and we couldn't get a hot shower. Even though we prepaid for 2 nights... we left after just one. It was disappointing.

We loved the huge condo space and multiple sleeping areas. The decor is definitely dated but I found all the spiral stair cases charming, and everything was clean and comfortable.

The pool was great and the game room in the main building was a life saver! We had some sick kids and they helped us get what we needed.

Also, the signage was great. I had a navigation fail and no signal and was panicking we would never find the place but the large signs clearly marked our way.

Our unit had 3 levels - main floor had kitchen, living room, deck & 1/2 bath. Upstairs had loft with plenty of room for kids to play board games or hang out. Downstairs had two bedrooms with 2 full baths and a deck outside the master bedroom and a concrete patio outside the 2nd bedroom. Looks like it would sleep up to 8 people but we had only 2. Plenty of room. Wood fireplace too (living room)

Service a Little Off But Otherwise Great

The facility itself was very nice. The decor is a bit outdated and worn, but not bad and overall very comfortable. Our daughter especially enjoyed the indoor pool and pool table. Our only complaint was around service. We arrived at 11:30. I knew we were early but asked anyway if it was possible to check in. I was told housekeeping was currently cleaning our condo and would be done by 2pm. No problem. We left, went out for lunch, drove around town a bit, and came back at 2:30. I was told then that housekeeping had not started cleaning our condo yet, and it wouldn't be ready until 4pm. Very annoying. I get that early check-ins aren't always possible, and that's fine. But just be straight with me about it. I didn't appreciate the apparent lies and run-around about when we would be able to check in.

The other odd thing was that nobody at the desk could suggest restaurants in town for breakfast. The restaurant across the street does not serve breakfast. Just seemed strange that in such a small town with so few restaurants, a hotel front desk staff couldn't name the 2 or 3 that serve breakfast.

But other than that, once we did get checked in, we had no problems and we really enjoyed our stay. We would very likely stay here again if we're in the area.

We stayed for a too brief ski weekend - we wish we could have stayed longer. The two bedroom condo unit was spacious and tidy. The layout with the bedrooms downstairs and the living area/kitchen upstairs worked well for us allowing some people to comfortably sleep in late while others woke up earlier. On our last night we built a fire in the wood burning oven and hung out in the living room surrounded by the beauty of the snowy woods.

The facility is located conveniently close to great restaurants in Arnold and the trip to Bear Valley was an easy drive in beautiful scenery. Because this place is off the main highway, there was no traffic noise. I slept well each night. There is a small heated pool in the main building as well as a billiards table and DVDs and board games but we did not have enough time to do more than ski while we were there. We wish we could have stayed longer.

Horrible Customer Service, Less then accommodating

My family and I showed up to the hotel at about 1pm on the arrival day, the front desk lady reminded us that check in was at 4pm, which we understood. We went and saw some of the sights, and came back at about 3:45pm. They informed me that the room was not available and to come back at 4pm. At that time we saw multiple other guests checking in to the hotel. The lady at the counter gave us suggestions for things to do, and one was to go to the full bar across the street, mind you I have my 13yr old son with us, which was his birthday. We have had these reservations for over a month. So, we left went down the street to a local store and looked around and came back after 4:10pm. Again, the room was not ready, so they had me fill out all the paperwork and take my $100 deposit, then proceeded to tell me it will be another 15 or so minutes for the room to be ready. So, I told them to cancel my room and got into my car with my family. One of the front desk ladies came running out stating that housekeeping is finishing vacuuming and we can come in and fill out the paperwork and give the deposit, and the room would be ready for us. We told her we had already done that, they apparently do not communicate with each other. The ladies that worked at the front desk, where incredibly rude and not helpful. I went down the street to a very accommodating hotel that was on the main street. Needless to say, Don't waste your money on this place!

The staff was really nice and helpful. We stayed in suite 20 with another couple. The place is well laid out and spacious for the four of us. They had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay. Staff was generous to give you clean linens if you needed it. Wifi is good, Had 3 TV's and the only issues we had was when we played a DVD the sound was really low but when the TV was on it was fine. Maybe this was operator error? Overal we loved our stay and it was very beautiful. Guys loved the golf course across the street and their restaurant is really good for dinner, wish they had breakfast.

Close to the Calaveras Big Trees redwoods groves, the old gold mining towns of Murphys, and Mark Twain's Angel's Camp of frog jumping fame. Condo had front and rear patios great for enjoying out doors, two bedrooms with baths, and kitchen with living room. Works well as a family vacation/romantic get away.

The people there were extremely friendly, as they would always greet with a good morning or hold the door, etc. The room we had was great as well, it was very big and could fit all of us. They had a bunch of great movie channels on the TV and rentable DVDs. The best part was the office though because they had a fooseball table, a pool table, a mini library, a wii/movie room, and a pool. There is also a country club nearby which was pretty cool, and there was free popcorn in our rooms. Overall the stay was very warm and welcoming. If i were to come in the area again, i would most definetely come back!

We were visiting the nearby caverns in Murphys and planned to stay in Arnold overnight. Found a great deal on Expedia at this hotel/resort. A little dated, but happily found a three-story condo/townhome to settle into. Nearby country club restaurant was quite delicious. We will definitely go back.

We had an excellent getaway at the Mountain Retreat Resort! This was an excellent place to stay, given its proximity to Big Trees. The Hotel staff/front desk where courteous, and friendly. The condos were roomy, clean and spacious. The resort pool, hot tub and sauna were outstanding. Although I didn't have an opportunity to golf, the golf course itself was beautiful.

More than expected

Attention to detail is apparent in this hotel from friendly service to housekeeping. Even though the interior is apparently dated, my unit 22 was spotlessly clean and spacious. There was plenty of room to lounge around and plenty of storage. It feels closer to three star facility, with pool, public kitchen, office, game rooms, library, workout room, restaurant across the street, golf course.

While the accommodations are dated and the common areas are small, the individual units are large and nicely located in the trees. It is really nicely located between Murphys - a cute little town and Calaveras Big Trees State Park - a must see experience!

This was a great place to stay while skiing at Bear Valley. We left our computer at the condo and the staff mailed it back to us. They are wonderful! The kitchen was well stocked and it was very easy to make meals.
