The restaurants staff was excellent. However, having owners buzzing around was ackward. They had conversations with other guests within a few inches away from me, enjoyed the hotel and grounds with the personal guests whie they were demanding with their staff, and conducted business calla in public areas like the restaurant (the tables next to me) at my meals. I came here to relax, not to be a party of their operations. I throughly enjoyed the Marine tour with Yurguen. However, the snorkeling was too difficult for me ans murky waters whereas I had no issues snorkeling from a boat a few days prior with another tour. Theres really nowhere closeby and need a vehicle or shuttle service to do anything outaide of the hotel.

I also informed reception about water constantly leaking into the bathroom and outside is the bathroom door because of the lack of caulking around the shower and the slow drainage system and was informed that it's \"normal\".

Becker, Renato and Yurguen od the service stadd always went above and beyond for me. Thank you!

The beach is dirty, nobody cleans. The ocean is not suitable for swimming , waves and cold current. Mosquitos. Stuffy and humid. Nothing interesting to do. I booked the hotel because the breakfast was included. In reality they charged more than 50$ extra!!!!! Because they give you a menu to choose and you can choose one dish per person. For example, only eggs, or only pancake. But you cannot take eggs and pancake together))))) you will be charged extra. The most stupid conception I have ever seen. Disappointed.

This resort was beautiful. A good bit off the beaten path but what a jewel when you get there! The rooms were quite spacious and lovely. There was a welcome gift when we arrived of fresh fruits. No matter where you are on the property, you can hear the waves crashing and it is glorious! The resort felt very exclusive and was populated but not crowded at all. Each time I went to the pool or any of the many options for laying out I felt like I had my preference. They had so many options of shaded or sunny spots to relax and enjoy the tropical surroundings. There were several iguanas on the property that loved sunning themselves by the pools as well. We enjoyed the breakfast each morning that was included in our stay but our favorite was lunch. The guacamole was fabulous and paired with the chicken quesadillas it was perfect! This resort was excellent for relaxing. We also took advantage of the spa. The couple's massage with the sound of the ocean was fantastic! Easily one of our favorites of all time and we love a good spa day!! As I stated in the beginning, Azul hotel and retreat is off the beaten path and you will need to rent a car. I'd suggest flying into Liberia Airport but it will still be a long drive to ANY of the resorts, but a lot longer if you fly into San Juan like we did. I loved the Azul Hotel and Retreat and I'm very glad we found such a great place to stay with wonderful employees that took great care of us!

This was in a remote area. There was only a shuttle to a small town at 9:00 am and 6:00 pm. You had to pay if you wanted to go at any other time. It is not really walkable to anything. The staff was very pleasant however the serivce in the dining room was very slow.

A wonderful gem of a resort ideal for total relaxation!
Pros: beautiful location on the coast, well-appointed rooms, excellent staff, great dining. This is the perfect place to bring a couple books and spend languid days listening to the ocean.
Cons: the resort is VERY far from everything over some tricky roads. It's no exaggeration that a 4X4 is a must- we were there during a long period of rain making travel and/or sightseeing treacherous. It is approximately an hour drive to Tamarindo, probably an hour and a half from the Guanacaste airport.

We loved our stay at Azul Ocean Club. It was very quiet and relaxing. The staff are so friendly and attentive. The pool is wonderful, and there are many comfortable spots to lounge. The waves in the ocean are a little rough for swimming, but would be great for boogie boarding. The beach is very private and beautiful. Room was very comfortable.

El personal del hotel es sumamente amable y atento en todo sentido.
La playa al frente del hotel no es una playa apta para estar pero playa San Juanillo que queda a solo 15 minutos en auto es preciosa.
Solo un detalle no relacionado al hotel en si, tener en cuenta que la calle no está en las mejores condiciones y es recomendado usar un carro alto.

Disappointed. Road to get there are treacherous.

Phone to room is not connected. Cannot call front desk. The Safe in our room … batteries expired after putting our passports and valuables in and could not get into the safe. No one at front desk. Called via WhatsApp. No message Center. Had to email. Still no response. Had to find someone to open it. Spoiled our day trip to see the Turtles migration in Ocional . Missed this once in a year phenomenon. The whole reason we booked this location. No coffee table to place any drinks, coffee or a plate. Awkward. Never have seem this before. TV did not work. No refund or expression of empathy. Manager would not allow later check out time even after all of this hassle. Very difficult to get to. Roads are treacherous. Grounds are lush. Only nice part. Never again. Ever.

If you want the soundtrack of the surf in the background of your next stay then the venture to the Azul Ocean Club is worth the trip.
A little off the paved path but well worth the adventure. The rooms are designed to enjoy the setting. The food is excellent, though a little pricey, and the beach is right there.

he place is beautiful and delicate, the staff was never present to see if we needed anything, the bar was not open during our stay and we went in for a Coke without permission thinking that we were obviously going to pay for it, when someone from the staff finally showed up We told what we did and she told us \"that's forbidden\" with a grim face and she immediately went through the dataphone, what we expected was for her to tell us \"oh what a pity, calm down, you need something else, the bar opens at such a time, I offer you cocktails etc\" and As a second point, there is no access to the beach due to garbage and logs.

Beware that to get to this hotel alone, is an adventure. You have to drive on 10 miles worth of dirt/unpaved/potholes to get to this hotel. The resort was nice, but our room was a little outdated. Also, expect bugs to drop in and out when you open the door. We went when it was raining and little critters kept coming in and falling on top of our beds.

This property was a nice surprise. I was skeptical at first after reading the reviews, but took my chances anyway. It is definitely off the beaten path - a dirt road with a lot of washboard leading to the hotel, but well worth it for us. But I would bring snacks/drinks if you don't want to travel after getting there (Marbella isn't much of a town). The food at the restaurant was very good and the pool bar was kind of more like pub food, but fine. The staff were all friendly and polite. I loved the room - spacious, clean and comfortable. The outside shower was great for those sandy days on the beach. The essential oil diffuser was a nice touch too! It is very quiet and private - unlike Tamarindo where we went after this - wishing we had stayed longer at Azul instead. I would return to this location.

My husband and I stayed here for 10 days on our first visit to Costa Rica. Azul Ocean Hotel was awesome! All the staff were amazing and so friendly! Being right on the ocean was like a dream come true! The pool was fantastic and so relaxing! All the grounds and rooms were so clean and maintained. My husband used the fitness room daily. I enjoyed relaxing on the beds listening to the ocean. The black sand beach was beautiful and we loved going there daily. The sunsets were absolutely gorgeous! Our daughter who lives in Nosara came to visit and stayed at the hotel for a few days in a suite. The food was great! If I had to suggest one thing, it would be if they could offer desserts at the restaurant…I have a sweet tooth 😊. I highly recommend this hotel! 😊

This was a nine day vacation with 10 people of our family. Had no idea the road conditions to get to the hotel 22 km of very bad dirt roads. Once at the resort grounds and rooms are great. There is absolutely nothing in the area to walk to and with 10 people taxis every time $100. Unfortunately they would run out of many items on the menu juice, bread, hamburgers, ribs, ravioli, lamb, etc. Most nights had to wait one hour to an hour and a half for our meal to come. I would not come to this resort again

The rooms are big and the bed is very comfortable. The premises are very well kept and tastefully done with a Caribbean flair. Unfortunately, the beach is black sand and not very inviting. There are nice beaches close by so if you have a car, that should not be a problem.
The staff is very helpful and super nice. The food is standard.

Once you get to the property, it is very nice. The rooms are nice, the grounds are kept well, the restaurant is wonderful, the staff is excellent. The ocean views were outstanding, but the beach was too choppy for us to enjoy. The largest problem is that it took us 2 hours on a very bumpy road to get there and after we got there, there was nothing in the area to do. The closest excursions were hours away.

Very spacious accommodation in an attractive setting.
There were occasional problems with the water supply. Free use of sports equipment, such as a well-stocked gym, table tennis, kayaks and bicycles, deserves to be noted favorably. Pool facilities, a jacuzzi and bar services in addition to a large, uncrowded beach made our stay rather pleasant. The once-a-week outdoor barbecue dinner should also be mentioned. Local staff were very pleasant and friendly, although occasionally a little inattentive.

If you REALLY want to get away from it all...

This is a place to go if you want to get away FROM IT ALL. It is a lovely property and the rooms are very nice; however, it is on a very dusty dirt road—although well maintained—for 30 minutes off the main highway. There is nothing nearby, and no swimming in the ocean anywhere that we could find. It does have a nice black sand beach. The main restaurant served good food, but the service was lacking. The gym was well equipped and the staff was very polite. We took a trip into Tamarindo which was basically an all day affair. Tam is very cute with a nice beach, but it was the complete opposite of Azul—busy and congested. Again, this is the dry side and there’s nothing tropical about this area. As for Azul, come here if you just want to read.

Very disappointing location and service

This hotel was much further away from everything than expected. Although not far in distance the road to get to and from to hotel was dirt and not suitable for a compact rental car. When we checked in we asked to reduce our stay to two nights as we wanted to be closer to nearby towns in order to do more sight seeing. While they agreed to reduce our stay when I was charged I was still charged for a full four nights when we only stayed for two nights. When I tried to call to inquire about the additional charges no one would answer the phone. This hotel is not suitable if you want to do anything other than stay at the hotel as nearby towns are not easily accessible due to the low quality of the road in and out. There is also absolutely nothing to do after 9PM other than be in your room.

I choose this resort mainly because the hotel described the beach sand to be azul but this is a lie, the beach sand is black in the ocean and outside the ocean. while checking- in the staff said that \"the sand changes its color with the ocean/sun\" but this is not true. I wanted to make this clear for everyone because If you are like me that loves white sand/calm beaches this is not for you.
Also, there are not lounge chairs at the beach and no drinks/food service so if you get thirsty you will have to take a long walk to the bar.
The pool has a bar but there is no music, or any activities going on.

Playa Azul- a rural wonderland and escape!

Playa Azulejo is a beautiful place with its own private beach that is protected from the surf. They provide kayaks and surfboards, as the area is known for water sports. The small restaurant on the location is chic and all of the waitstaff are incredibly friendly and welcome English. The rooms are spacious and each have their own porch with hammocks. Lower level rooms in each house have outdoor showers as well as indoor showers. There is a great view of the stars after the sunset bonfire each night. We had several different opportunities to see wildlife, including geckos, iguanas, a few residing cats, and our favorite- an incredibly curious and friendly raccoon who walked right up to our porch and hung out with us while he smacked on some cheese puffs. The hotel also provides a game room, full gym, pool, jacuzzi and sunset views from each room.
Be aware that google maps is not a reliable navigation I Costa Rica, and the drive from any local highway makes Playa Azul a long drive to get to, as it is not off of any main roads. The road to this mini paradise is very bumpy and hilly, and all wheel drive is highly recommended. The earlier you leave in the day the better, as after you exit the freeway there is little lighting on the roads.

Upon checking in I had no issues. However after requesting spa services I had to call the front desk to be told it was in 2 or 3 hours. After waiting 45 minutes for confirm to start my relaxation trip I called the front desk several times no answer and I had to walk to the front. I waited for the new shift mngr to listen to notes left. It was confirmed for 5pm. I went to eat dinner and watched the server each time walk back and forth to the other restaurant to get my drink each taking 10-15 minutes to make. I was one of two guests. At dinner time I thought this was odd. The food was horrible. I got sick that night and stayed ill for 2 days. The server said how was the chiviche? Not good. I’ll take it off your bill. Upon arriving for my spa services 10 minutes early typical of any service I’ve received I was met w an annoyed and rushed therapist still setting up. To which she responded I’m not ready. She then left the hotel room although I requested it be outside, and returned with chocolate and two other items. The whole experience was horrible. An injury I told her about she disregarded and turns off the ac in 80°weather. The chocolate was cold and poured directly onto me as was the scrub. But no real scrub. She skipped parts of my body I couldn’t reach and wasn’t engaging or polite. Once I was able to relax she took the eye patch off abruptly and rushed me out of the room. Giving me a rob to put on that didn’t completely close and was for 40° weather. I refused to pay.

The property is in a secluded area. So if u want to get away from civilization great location! The roads to get there are in rough shape( not the hotel fault). The service was excellent and the staff very accommodating. We came during the low season so only one of the 2 restaurant is open. We had to go to the nearest town to get some snacks and food to have in our rooms. . The fixtures do need to be upgraded especially the shower heads. I would return again

Far away from busy tourist areas, but limited services. About 25 km of un paved road to get there. Nice setting on a beautiful isolated beach. Only problem is so many mosquitoes and need lots of bug spray. Going in slow season, you almost have the place to yourself. Food was outstanding, probably the best mahi I’ve had in over 12 years of coming to CR.

The hotel itself is nice and clean but the location is a nightmare. It takes a full hour on a dirt road to get to the location. When we did arrive it was about 7pm and reception was unstaffed so I rifled through the paperwork on the desk and found keys and my checkin paperwork. As it was off season the restaurant was about to close. We hit the restaurant quickly and paid A LOT of money for an average meal. In the morning after breakfast we left and lost two remaining nights of reservation due to the isolation and lack of anything to do.

First: if you are looking for a hotel that is off the beaten path you have found the right place. The hotel is what you would expect from a seaside resort. The facility is a little dated but We were ok with that as it met all of our needs. The service was great and the restaurant food was superb. The restaurant is an open air format so it was a little warm, but the view was nice. The swimming pool was nice, but I think they could do a better job of cleaning up the foliage from the garden to get a better view of the beach from the infinity pool. There are large mango trees throughout the property and it was cool to pick mangos to eat. The room it self was very spacious but a little dirty in the corners. My one main complaint was that the shower head was old and did not spray water real well. The ocean view from our balcony hammock made up for the bad shower head. The bed was very comfy and we enjoyed a great night sleep every night. We will definitely be back.

The strengths of this property are it location on a stunning beach. The units are newer and not bad for the price we paid. The poll is nice and there are other nice amenities. The restaurant was very good with amazing preparations of fish although a bit overpriced. This place would be a diamond if the staff was trained for service. Don't get me wrong they were all very nice but just weren't trained to be attentive. It costs them a lot of business around the pool. All in all I would recommend you go.

Terrific out of the way gem.

This was a great experience. I visited with my 11 year old in March 2019. I had a 2 queen bed with an ocean view room. Room was as advertised in the pictures. Large. Comfortable. Clean. View was great. A/C worked well (which was kind of important since outside temp was highs of 95F). Staff was great. Food was really good, which was good because there aren't many alternatives nearby. WIFI in room worked well. Beach was fabulous!!! Most of the time we had it completely to ourselves. Surf was fun. Made for great walks along it to nearby beaches. We rented a car and drove from Liberia to the Hotel, which is something like a 2 hour drive. Most of the way on nice paved road, but last 30-40 minutes on standard issue Costa Rican dirt road. We had a regular sedan (Toyota Corolla), and that was perfectly adequate. One note: This was dry season. In rainy season, I'm guessing getting something like an SUV might be a good idea. We drove up to Tamarindo one day which is a busy tourist beach. I can only say that I loved our choice of staying at Playa Azul. Beautiful and unspoiled. This was an overall wonderful stay. But go with the right expectations: This is a small resort. It has all the amenities you would like. In addition the staff is great (little things like when there were no potato chips directly on sale, the kitchen simply just made some fresh - they were great). But it is not a big hilton/hyatt/marriott operation. If that's what you require, think twice.

The property is beautiful - the villas are beautiful to look at & well appointed inside. Nothing better than swinging on a top floor hammock. The black sand beach is extraordinary - so nice for an early walk or sunset. You need to know that the facility is20km down a dirt road & the closest town is 5KM either way. It would be great if the facility had surf equipment to use as it is inconvenient to go elsewhere.

Way off the beaten path ....

I went to this resort for a one week getaway just to rest and relax. Let’s start with getting there. The resort is located on the west coast of Costa Rica about a 4 1/2 hour drive from San Jose. The majority of the drive is on highways that are in excellent condition although you have to pay numerous tolls to utilize the highway. The remaining approximate 22 km from the main highway to the resort is on horrendous gravel roads with potholes up to 2 feet deep. I highly recommend if you were going to drive to this resort to rent a 4 x 4 vehicle as it is absolutely necessary. Those final 22 km will take you approximately 1 hour to drive it’s that bad. Onto the resort. The resort is located right on the coast on a black sand beach that becomes extremely hot to walk on in bare feet. The accommodations were probably excellent at time of opening however there seems to be a lack of maintenance and they are slightly rundown. To give you some examples my accommodations had two showers both had showerheads that leaked everywhere and you could tell they have never been cleaned. Additionally the unit was located up on a hill and the pathway to the unit had all the lights burnt out. Therefore I required the use of myself phone light in order to safely navigate up to my unit at night. The units could use an extremely good deep clean. At best they are surface cleaned and not very well at that. However they are still comfortable and if you are not a germaphobe it won’t be a huge concern.

AMAZING!!

We had an AMAZING time here! We will be back! The rooms are lovely, the service is great and the private beach is fantastic! We were able to walk up and down the beach with barley seeing another soul and enjoy the crashing waves and creatures along the way. This place is so relaxing, we sat out on our private porch at night and listened to the waves crash. I HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone. It's off the beaten path but completely worth it!

Loved it! The hotel is Beautiful and peacefull, the staff is extremely nice, the suites have everything you might need, my little one really enjoyed the swimming pool and we also did without concern, the Beach was also really nice. The only thing you might need to consider and we didn’t know is the last 20kms or so the Road is unpaved. We didn’t love the food but it’s OK (they were out of avocados and mushrooms and we ordered dishes with those ingredients, but no one told is until it was served incomplete) and you have microwave and fridge so take that in count.

This place is quiet, very close to the beach, very clean it is all as described. To get here you have to get about 35 Km / 20 Miles of unpaved road so consider a 4x2 kind of a car, it will take you around 30 ~ 45 minutes to get there. Food in the hotel is not quite the best and unfortunately closest restaurant is about 25 minutes away. Other than that everything else is great!!!
