Lovely weekend

Just home from a great 2-night break at Hodson Bay. We had a lovely lake view room which was really comfortable and spacious. Superb meal in the restaurant on second evening. We got a taxi into Athlone on the first. Great pool area also. Great for couples and families and we hope to be back.

Lovel short stay at Hodson Bay

Had a great stay at the Hodson Bay Hotel recently, it is in a fabulous location, highly recommend the Viking boat trip in to Athlone.
Found the food to be a lot better in the Restaurant than in the bar, it can get very busy at breakfast times, but if you get down early its fine.
Enjoyed the pool and leisure facilities also, staff very helpful and friendly throughout.

This was a last minute booking and after looking at different options in the area, this appeared to be the best value for money. How wrong we were. We booked a Lough view superior room (this was extra), and were very surprised to not have the lough view that the pictures showed. Yes we could see it if we wrenched our necks. They moved our room, a whole floor above that we were told had a golf course view. It didn’t, it had the same side view and the added bonus of a roof top. Our original room was also less than clean, there was excrement in the toilet when we arrived. The condition of the furniture was also not great. Yes the room was very spacious with a decent amount of storage space. The second room was exactly the same (minus the excrement in the toilet).
We raised a concern with the reception staff who informed us they don’t actually do Lough view rooms at the hotel. The manager was called and he tried to resolve the concern, but didn’t appear equipped enough to deal with this. We were given a few free drinks at the bar, a fruit platter and box of chocolates. And an apology. Overall, after a long travel day we didn’t have the energy to find somewhere else, but feel extremely disappointed that what’s advertised does not actually represent what you get. The images were very misleading. Very poor service on behalf of the hotel and hotels.com.

Our stay was lovely we did have a fantastic time the hotel was beautiful and the pool was so lovely to relax in with a hot tub, steam room and sauna. We visited in December and the temperature of the pool was a little chilly but it was absolutely fine. We also only had one dinner which was in the restaurant, at the time of visiting there were renovations happening so it was the only restaurant available. I have a few allergies so the options were very limited but I managed to get something and it tasted amazing.

Entry to waterfront bar had to queue for 20 mins to get a drink as they were doing food, got cocktails one was undrinkable , alarm went off for 90 seconds at 04.04 for 90 seconds. Breakfast was excellent. Poor value overall.

The property is beautiful. We stayed only one day but I wish we would have stayed more days. It is so peaceful and picturesque. We didn't have dinner here but we did have breakfast and it was superb! Staff was very friendly and helpful. The room was very nice but as I have reviewed other hotels and B&B's in Ireland, I wish they offered US to European electrical outlet converters. We did bring our own but as many US tourists that visit Ireland, this should be a standard practice. Other than that, beautiful hotel!!!

Really is a place to stay if you want the resort feel and not leave the property. For how expensive it is I was shocked there wasn't a free bus that would take you into town, the room also had a few issues (nothing huge) like the shower head was dropping off the holder so water just kind of spilled out and one of the outlets wouldn't let you even plug something in. Not a huge deal but at €220 euro a night, I would expect a little better. There is a €5 tray charge for breakfast room service but that's it so huge win there. I also got a massage which has to be one of the best of my life, especially the after care pampering with ice cream, a relaxing room and views of the bay. Tons to do on site for families and the staff was absolutely great.

Was given a lovely corner room both windows over looking the lake. Room was excellent and facilities. Had food in the bar. Service wasnt the best, lack of training. Simple things like having to ask for cutlery for both starter and the main course had to get it myself for the main after it never arrived after asking for it. Drinks were left sitting on the bar for about 10mins before brought to the table.. they bring the food out from the kitchen and place it on a table for 5mins before serving it to the customers. Lots of little things. No sugar provided with coffee and it was spilt al round the saucer. Staff wer friendly just lack of propper training. Food was nice could of been warmer. But as i said it was left sitting on a tray before it was served.

Cant understand the recent 10/10 reviews. Property felt like a soleless business hotel. Lots of events taking place through the day attended by non-guests. Very busy feel between this and members to the spa.
The room was clean, but the view of a roof and ventilation shafts not really what id expect of one of the nicer rooms. There was drilling work going on late into the evening. I had to go down to reception to resolve and was kept waiting roughly 45mins. The manager was very apologetic and comped us a bottle of wine which i really appreciated. But ultimately I wouldnt ever stay here again.

The stay was for 3 nights which were exceptional in relation to the staff, food and environment. I don’t know who trains the staff at the hotel but they do an amazing job. It was also great as an electric driver to have two EV chargers at the hotel. It is clear that the guests needs are thought about. I went to Sligo fir two nights following where the hotel and staff were so poor i left after one night. I will definitely return.

Great Hotel in a very picturesque location right on the lake. The added extras like the complimentary cocktail making (hosted by Renato) and the complimentary wine/ cheese pairing (hosted by Andrsey)were excellently hosted and the 2 of them had great knowledge. This was such a relaxed way to meet and get to know fellow guests. We ate in the bar and the food and service were excellent. The only slight issue was the elevator wasn't working on the morning of checkout (we were on 4th floor), but, we were allowed use the staff elevator so it didn't become a major issue. Look forward to going back again.

First and last time. Dinner finished at 20.30, checked in at 20.50 restaurant was still serving main course. Asked at bar if they could at least do a sandwich, was offered two pieces of bread and sachet butter to put the crisps in I had just bought - disgusted at how unaccommodating the kitchen and staff were after a long day of travelling. As a frequent traveller, I would never stay at this hotel again

Nice to visit, but not very bike friendly

Pros: Nice hotel, beautiful view, amazing spa, lovely 5km walk through fields close by. Staff were all very pleasant.

Cons: Everything had to be paid for as you used it, rather than just being able to put it on the bill on the end. It's not the end of the world, but it did mean you had to carry your wallet/bag/phone the whole time, rather than just being able to give a room number.

No bike trails at the hotel, or nearby. Didn't see any bike parking on-site either, which is a shame because the Athlone Greenway is close by (just over 8km by bike) and is advertised as one of the attractions to do while there. It would be good if there was an option to cycle directly from the hotel to the Greenway.

Fab location and wonderful food.

Location was beautiful, fabulous views and a short drive into Athlone. The food at the hotel was excellent and this was served by very friendly helpful staff.
The housekeeping was disappointing and although our room was large with wonderful views it was let down by tired furniture, stained worn carpet and dated decor.
Overall we enjoyed our stay in this lovely hotel. It offered good facilities and lots of scenic walks, with the bonus of being close to a great shopping area and lively town.

Hodson Bay - Winter Stay

Hotel was fine, but it was winter and think it’s much more suitable for the spring / summer months.

Room was large for a family of 4 though you may have to live out of your suitcase as there wasn’t much in the way of closet space for 4 people.

The pool was fabulous… best bit of holiday… and caters for all (tho tbh I didn’t see a hoist for disabled persons but may have been tucked away for safety til required).

Dined at the hotels fancy restaurant. Food was lovely but very little in the way to cater for 9-teens unless eating a full adult meal (kids portions of adult meals aren’t catered for - just basic choices for young kids). Both mine ate adult meals and enjoyed it. However we were a little surprised that they insisted on pre-ordering desserts!! Good food but pricey.

Overall the hotel was perfectly adequate for our needs. I could tell that summer would have many more activities and be best time of year. Gorgeous views over the lake and didn’t go on the walk as too wet but am sure it would be lovely.
