This is a beautiful hotel which is well situated to see the tomb of Pelayo and the basilica. Charming and full of character, this hotel is worth the money. The restaurant serves dinner with Asturian classics at a reasonable price. The only criticism is that the waiter could not tell us anything about the cheeses we were eating. As Asturias is known for its gastronomy, a hotel of this class should have staff who can talk about the food in either English or Spanish. That said, I would not hesitate to return.

The hotel is grand, but the carpets and furnishings have seen better days. However, I would still recommend the hotel, as the room was large and very comfortable. It is set near the cathedral and has mountain views, but there is nothing else in Covadonga except a couple of restaurants catering to tourists that close at 8 pm. There is an on-site cafeteria and dining room at the hotel, which is very nice. To go to Lagos Covadonga during peak season, one must take the bus (book well in advance, as it sells out fast) or a private taxi service that takes passengers first-come first-serve (no reservations) for 12 Euro pp. The taxi stand is located at the intersection of the road leading to the lakes. There is another taxi service that meets near the church at the top of the hill, but they only allow you to stay at the lakes for 1.25 hours and the ride is also 12 Euro.

Super location in an amazing setting directly facing the Basilica and the Sacred Cave. The room was lovely and spacious, with really good quality bedding. A choice of restaurants/ cafeteria with different prices, offering Asturian-style cooking. Very helpful staff. The car parking is limited, so we frequently parked in the public carpark some 100-200m away. And the trip to the Lagos de Covadonga was a highlight of the area.

Beautiful place with terrible customer service.

It’s a very nice hotel, except the Internet they advertise barely works. I explain the lady at the front desk that I needed to leave a day early so I could finish my paperwork online required by the airline because the Internet did not work.
She replied that she could not discount the last day because it would affect her commission, obviously that was more important to her than fairness or a customer care.
On top of that my order #917763-6791890 with hotels.com was for $265.72 including taxes and fees. The hotel charge me $306.00
I asked them to look for my hotels.com order and she replied that my order had come in through Expedia.
I will not stay at that hotel again and I will tell everyone I know about my terrible experience.

El desayuno es bastnate bueno, y el menu de cena es epsctacular y con muy buen calidad / precio, con servicio clasico.

Aspectos algo negativos: Muy poco aparcamiento y muy esrecho, me toco ir a aparcar detras de la basilica, y ausencia de ayuda con las maletas y espera en recepcion (son majisimos pero estan desbordados)

I booked a special offer and got two nights of what must be way under value. The room and bathroom were spacious, clean and comfy. Little fridge was handy. However the biggest surprise was the dinner. I chose the dinner menu and was gobsmacked. 3 delicious courses for a mere 19 EUR including an entire bottle of wine and a bottle of water. Elsewhere you would have paid triple the amount for this kind of service and quality.

Good value if you get a cheaper rate

Comfortable hotel but lighting poor in the bathroom. We could smell fish all the time we were there, which may have been because we were at the back of the hotel. To be fair, we got a good rate. We were unable to get lunch in the hotel on Sunday as it was full and it would be nice to think as a resident, one could have eaten there. Overall though, can't really complain about the value.

Terrible!. 3 elderly were sent to rooms under the roof structure with no windows!. Restaurant refused to serve them dinner alleging no reservation was made when nobody informed at check in of the need to reserve. Elder people who had to take medicines with food. The hotel's location is ideal for visiting Covadonga. Covadonga is ideal for visiting Picos de Europa. The hotel is renovated and the staff was welcoming. The rooms are traditional, but recently renovated so it makes the experience very comforting. We had breakfast included with our stay and that was very pleasing in the restaurant setting that you can see the Basilica. I would recommend that you have dinner outside of the property as there are nearby restaurants that may have a better meal.

My room was on the fourth floor attic with only sky windows. Also the elevator only goes to the third floor. The service was very friendly and parking relatively easy to find. Both dinner and breakfast of good quality and reasonable pricing. Plan your time ahead because breakfast only starts at 8:30 AM and dinner from 8:30 PM. If you plan to visit the Covadonga lakes, you need to get to the bus before the lines get too long. If you plan on driving to Puente Poncebos for Bulnes or one of the hikes, be there early or you won't find parking.

Great hotel at an exceptional location. Because we were three we booked a junior suite which has two rooms with two bathrooms and a living room where an espresso machine was our salvation. The best of the room are the views from every window, you could see the entire Basilica and the entrance of the cave from your room. Breakfast buffet was really good with variety and quality. The proximity to the lakes allow you to wake up early and visit them before the entrance is closed (Summer time). I really recommend Gran Pelayo Hotel.

The location was perfect to walk around and explore the area. You could tell this was once a grand hotel but it has been maintained with newer bathrooms which still suit the old layout but have modern touches. Large rooms with high ceiling, very quiet. . The hotel is superficially grand. I had what was meant to be a luxury room. It was quite basic and in 2018 I would expect decent toiletries and a separate shower and bath and at least a dressing gown The room was basic to say the least.

I hate to play the Englishman but I need tea making facilities. There was none. Bar food was poor. I ate elsewhere.

My main issue though is the racket at night. I forgot my earplugs and this is Spain after all. The adjoining guests were noisy and the walls thin. There is a restaurant, bar and salon on the ground floor and they are very audible in the rooms on the lower floors. I was on a high level hiking trip and needed sleep. If I wanted to party I would go to Marbella.

PROS: A charming historic hotel nestled directly alongside a majestic mountain range and literally right next door to a century-old basilica. The weather during our June visit was perfect (for us): chilly and misty. Waking up to the sounds of church bells was a delightful experience. The food at the restaurant was good (not great) but was very affordable priced. Bed was comfy, shower quite good, and rooms had A/C (apparently atypical in Spain). Staff were quite friendly and resourceful. CONS: Really quite minor, but the hotel is a little worn around the edges. Carpet is a bit threadbare and floors are squeaky. More than once the drinking glasses at the restaurant looked as if they could have been better washed.

It was going back in time experience, in a good way. Hotel is right st the Covadonga shrine. It’s well kept, very beautiful and peaceful. Food is excellent in restaurant and cafeteria. Staying at hotel comes with parking and direct reach to all facilities and nearby Covadonga’s lakes and look outs with magnificent views. You are nearby Cangas de Onís town with excellent food, water sports, cycling, walking and climbing facilities. It was a delightful experience.

A Gem - comfortable and reasonably priced.

What a gem! This is a very old hotel with modernised amenities and one of the grand old hotels of the area that has retained its elegance. Spacious (upstairs passages about 5m wide) and high-ceilinged (sic?), the decor is interesting and refined. The service was excellent - we were a late arrival on a winter's night, and were served tea in front of a roaring fire in the Salon. The room was comfortable with a very well appointed bathroom. A hot shower(me)/bath(wife) and a good night's sleep - what more do you want? We arose in daylight to excellent mountain views, and went down for a superb freshly-prepared breakfast. The only quibble is that you won't find it on SatNav - and I had two; a portable TomTom and an in-built in the hire car. However, it is easy to find - go right at the roundabout at the end of the AS-262 from Cangas de Onís up towards the Santuario de Covadonga and the hotel entrance is at the foot of the Basilica as you round the first tight-left bend in the road.

Everything was perfect for us. We got an attic room. The location is very convenient for everything in the area. The parking lot, as other mentioned, is very limited, but you can unload the luggage at the front door and park in a huge free public parking lot at walking distance. The only think that I found odd, was that the air conditioning is turned off automatically during the night, and stay off in the morning. Opening the skylights refreshed the air a lot, but you cannot leave them open, or it will rain on your bed! Everything else was really good, including a very comfy bed and the breakfast.

Tired and rundown - shining meets Fawlty Towers.

Check in was at 2pm. We arrived at 5pm and were told the room wasn't ready and had to wait 45 minutes until it was. Nevertheless, Javier on reception was very friendly, helpful and worked about 3 jobs in the hotel at once!
Our room was tired, had no main light, just lamps, was next to the elevator and had the kitchen fans outside. It's decor was also tired and bits missing or broken.
Difficult to get served in the bar and felt that some staff were not very helpful.
Hotel was meant to have wifi throughout - only access was in the bar area, wouldn't have been a problem but we had no telephone service at all due to location.
Many things would have annoyed most people, however we were only there 2 nights and are very easy going. Only stay if you have a sense of humor- think shining meets fawlty towers.

On checking out the reception actually tried over charging us for a \"an additional breakfast.\" The toaster would burn toast rather than eject it; the coffe machine had a life of its own.
I expected more from a four star hotel situated in such refined secular situation.

Clearly, the hotel feels it has in some way transcended or circumvented the need to provide good service or even piety. In times long past this hotel must have been a jewel of hospitality and refinement. Unfortunately, now, there are two and three star hotels less than one or two kilometers away that our surpass the hotel and all it has to offer for much less and with far less conceitedness, except the proximity to the holy shrine.

Think carefully before you are overcome by the setting and grandiose architectures. better alternatives abound and they are only too happy to go that extra kilometer to assist you in anyway they can. Alternatively, you can pay top dollar and haul your own luggage up to the fourth floor, watch your toast burn and drink Luke-warm coffee that resembles dish water and be asked to pay for more than you have actually consumed.

I consider myself optimistic and overly patient, however this hotel deserves to be independently inspected and if found failing downgraded.p: it is undeserving of its four star rank and flagrantly misleads pilgrims and traveler alike out of their hard earned money.

And all this in such proximity of a convent and burial place of the first King of Asturias.

Having heard that some of the rooms are dark, I rang after booking online to ensure we would be given a light filled room. The room, 207, was fantastic. It was huge and filled with windows on two walls. There was a closed balcony with windows the entire length overlooking the cathedral and mountains - a really beautiful view. The room was very clean. We don't eat meat so for us breakfast was just adequate. We had dinner in the restaurant and it was very good and very reasonable The location is great, just below the basilica. I recommend the hotel but check that you get a light room.

Visit to Covadonga shrine and battlefield

The hotel is a magnificient building in the heart of the Covadonga shrine and battlefield. Covadonga means Cueva Honda (deep cave).
The Covadonga battle was fought in 722 D.C. and is the first Christian victory in the so called Reconquista of Spain from the Muslim dominance. The Reconquista was completed some 770 years later when the Kingdom of Granada fell in the hands of the Catholic Monarchs in 1492. It is said that Covadonga is the birthplace of what is Spain today and what it transmited to its former colonies, worldwide. Pelayo, the Christian leader, was the first Asturian king, whose descents developed, over the centuries, into the present Spanish Royal family (the Spanish heir apparent holds the title of Prince of Asturias.) Pelayo was guided by the Virgin Mary and used an oak cross as a banner. Today, that cross is covered with gold and jewelry and is hold in the treasure of the Oviedo Cathedral, in Northern Spain. An image of the Virgin was later found in the caves around Covadonga. Today, this image is shrined in the Covadonga site, in a magnificient cathedral built among the steeped hills that conform the Asturias country.
The scenery is outstanding with steeped peaks and winding but wel build roads. The area belongs to the first Spanish National Park Los Picos de Europa (Europa's Peaks.)
Gran Hotel Pelayo is a four star international facility catering to the high end traveler.
Good access to other attractions like blue cheese making factory and museums.

La habitación estaba limpia pero la moqueta tenia manchas, el personal amable pero tardaron mucho en atendernos para cenar y luego se les olvidó un plato y nos lo trajeron todo a la vez... El desayuno muy bueno, la chica muy atenta y agradable. No teníamos balcón y las vistas desde la ventana daban al aparcamiento pero fuimos de noche y dejamos el hotel pronto asique tampoco íbamos a disfrutarlas.

La máquina del café no dispensaba el descafeinado de ninguna clase los dos días de la estancia.
Las plazas de parking escasas.

Good older hotel, pretty noisy

Some minor things what should be taken care of before we arrived. Take in mind the hotel is old and very noisy. For sure not bad, the restaurant is excellent and the location top of the top. Parking is easy, staff is very helpful and friendly. Especially the waiter in the restaurant.

Justo en el sitio ideal. Parking no garantizado.

Aparcamiento difícil porque se mete gente no alojada en el hotel; tuvimos suerte y pillamos el último pero no pudimos mover el coche por miedo a perderlo. A 2 pasos (literalmente) del Santuario de Covadonga e ideal para las excursiones a los lagos, desayuno bufet más de 3 estrellas y estilo antiguo pero habitaciones amplias y cama cómoda.

Hotel ist ok, leider nicht ganz so ausgestattet wie es in dieser Kategorie üblich ist, kein Wasser auf dem Zimmer, leere Minibar, keine Kaffee- oder Teezubereitungsmöglichkeit, natürlich auch keine Bademantel oder Badeslipper, aber vier teure Sterne. Beim Frühstück gibt es Kontakt mit einer prähistorischen Kaffeemaschine die einfach nur unangenehm laut war.
Restaurant ist gut, Lage und Ambiente ebenfalls, leider starker Sanitärgeruch aus den Toiletten der in den Salons und in der Bar störten. Personal sehr freundlich, aber etwas überfordert, wenn ein Bus mit 40 Leuten kommt.

Es precioso y elegante, la HB 109 tiene unas vistas preciosas al monasterio de noche. El enclave donde se encuentra es espectacular, recomendadisimo 100%. Volveré en cuanto pueda.
