Hotel location is fantastic close and walkable to attractions, restaurants and a wonderful shopping area. 10 minutes drive from the beach but u can easily take a taxi to one of the beach clubs since the hotel doesn’t have its own beach club so u have to actually pay to go to the one hotel recommended which was nice but pricey. Everything was great in this historical property. Fantastic views of Mt Aetna, the Greek theater, and the sea. Wonderful service at the pool. Amazing well tended gardens. The hotel is stunning. It feels like a museum, there’s so much art. The views are incredible; the staff is very kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. The rooms are beautiful, especially the bathroom. I just wish my room had a bathtub, otherwise it would have been perfect. Great location too - close to everything (restaurants, shops, some of the main Taormina sights). I’ll definitely go back!

The San Domenico Palace was terrific. The location in Taormina is perfect; right on the hill overlooking the bay. The property is large, with beautiful gardens and patios. Very comfortable. The staff are gracious and accommodating.

Beautiful hotel in the heart of Taormina! Easy walking distance to everything. This historic hotel is quite charming, with its rich history, art, and ancient artifacts. Our room was clean and had a magnificent view of the ocean. We enjoyed the lavish buffet each morning while sitting on the patio, over looking the ocean. Our only complaint is that the air conditioner in our room made a horrible ear piercing sound and we had to sleep in a hot room without it. We ask for it to be fixed the first day we were there, but no one came to fix it. The day we left it still had not been fixed.

The facility, location, and staff are top-notch! Dinner was priced like hotel dinner but far better than most hotel dinners. We had fresh fish prepared superbly. Buffet breakfast best of its kind. For historic property, facility has every modern amenity. We had 2 twin beds pushed together though we expected a king. Not ideal. All the beauty however offset this one inconvenience.

The room was exactly as advertised. We had booked a deluxe room with a sea view and we're really pleased to find we had a balcony too. San Domenico Palace hotel lives up to its name in that it is like a grand, rambling palace. The gardens are beautiful, tranquil with lots of different places to sit. The pool area, although not large, was lovely and the staff there were very attentive. Breakfast was always good.

Swathed in history but...
A quiet peaceful beautiful hotel with a wonderful history. This hotel has beautiful extensive gardens and wonderful sea views, but maybe because of the weakness of the pound against the euro since the UK vote on the EU, the prices charged for food and drink cannot be justified. (1,14 eu = £1) Who wants to pay 15-18 eu for a glass of unmeasured wine (small) or around 5eu for a tonic water, small bitter lemon, or around 8-10eu for a small bottle of beer. We opted for a Superior Room and paid the premium but it just wasn't worth the extra. It was very basic. All in all, Taormina is unfortunately pricing itself out of an acceptable place to visit now. This view is also one shared by someone we met whilst out there who is in the tourist industry.
Having said all that, the place is a delight to experience and worthy of a visit.

This is a beautiful hotel, retaining much of its original features, with very extensive public rooms and beautiful gardens overlooking the bay. It is very well situated in the heart of Taormina and surrounded by excellent restaurants. We had a superior double room with balcony with an excellent seat views. We only ate breakfast in the hotel because we thought the restaurants were extremely expensive. My only criticism would be that there was very little choice of fresh fruit at breakfast and we would not expensive to be offered tinned peaches, pears and prunes in such a costly 5 star hotel. Apart from that, the staff were attentive and friendly. We would like to return to this hotel, especially to relax in the tranquil gardens.

Fantastic hotel, does what it says on the tin and more. Their website does not do the hotel justice. Location is great, very close to the town. Staff are very helpful. Food was first class, albeit a little over priced, but that's what to expect from such a high class hotel. Mini-bar in room is very over priced. We found that we could buy a full bottle of the same make wine for less than 13 euros. A half bottle of same wine from the mini-bar was 16 euros.

A beautiful hotel, close to the action.
This was a great hotel with rates that were reasonable for Taormina. It was removed from the main drag, but close enough to make for easy access to all the important sites and good restaurants. The service was generally excellent and the hotel very beautiful, particularly the garden room off the lobby, where you can have a drink or just sit to relax. Staff was very helpful; no problem getting juice and coffee to bring to our room before we actually went for the very elegant breakfast on a beautiful terrace. The one service problem we had was getting a bucket of ice in the late afternoon. The terrace restaurant was closed and the person serving in the garden room claimed that she couldn't give me some ice but would call room service to have ice delivered to our room. It never came and I doubt she made the call. This is a very large hotel which used to be a convent, so there is a lot of walking to get to your room (we were in the \"new\" hotel section, added in 1896). Room was very comfortable.

This hotel was perfect! The rooms were huge and very clean. We had a beautiful view of the sea and mountains from our room. The hotel is a historic building that has been beautifully restored to a hotel. The grounds and gardens are beautiful and overlook the sea. The breakfast provided with the room was great! Very short walk to the main street in town. Taormina is a great town that we would love to come back to and we would definitely stay in this hotel and recommend it to anyone!

This hotel did not disappoint in terms of beauty and history. The courtyard and common areas are beautiful, and the views from the garden are breathtaking. San Domenico is also within easy walking distance of shopping, excellent restaurants, and all of the main attractions in Taormina. Breakfast was good quality, and the wifi speed was acceptable. However, we found the bed linens to be poor quality (rough and not very uncomfortable), especially for a hotel of this caliber. Some nights, the room got quite cold, and the blankets were fairly thin. There was also some sort of dirt that seeped from the window into our shower when it rained. Overall, our room was satisfactory, but it showed its age a bit.

Nice hotel. Impressive public spaces. Extraordinary view of the ocean from high up. Taormina: A constant reminder that we are just tourists (can we create a separate category for travelers, visitors?) Go for a day, don't stay. Also, a true nightmare to drive in. Not talking about the usual Italian aggressiveness, talking about roads like threads. On a positive note, impressive Greek theater and good dining. Try Osteria Nero d'Avola and Al Duomo.

Beautiful Taormina
This is an old world hotel. Half of it is a 600-year-old monastery. The grounds are exquisite, filled with beautiful gardens. The location, Taormina, could not be more spectacular. We were a large group of people who were accommodated very nicely. There are many rooms, nooks and crannies, where you can hide away and read a book, go for a swim in the pool, or a walk in the gardens. Town is right outside the door. I highly recommend it for older travelers. Probably not for 20 or 30 somethings. Be sure to walk the entire length of town, because the first part is very very touristy. Go up and down the alleys, explore, and enjoy the views.

I paid extra for a superior sea view room and my friends that I traveled with, booked a comfort room and are rooms were exactly the same. When I expressed my disappointment with the room, I was moved four doors down and was told that's the best they could do. And blamed hotels.com for the description. I still have no idea what I paid extra for. I found the staff stuffy and the air conditioning was terrible and the pool area really needs a renovation!

This hotel was gorgeous. The gardens are breathtaking and the service was superb. It is in the perfect location for walking around town! My only complaint was that the hotel was not full and yet they put is in a room that made us feel like we were in the servants quarters! The room was huge and beautiful, but a little out of the way. We didn't request a change, well frankly because we're not fussy and we were busy enjoying ourselves! The only other comment I would make is that it was a bit of an older crowd and my husband and I are in our late 30's/early 40's so we're not exactly spring breakers! Overall, I would most definitely return. And as a final note . . . this hotel has the best breakfast in Europe!

Relaxing with old world charm
This architectural gem, formerly a monastery, has beautiful grounds especially the cloister area and a soothing well kept garden. The hotel staff are extremely pleasant and courteous, not something you often get in Italy. The hotel is also a short walking distance from numerous shops and restaurants. The breakfast offered many selections and some seating offers a view of the water. All in all a very enjoyable stay, highly recommended.

the strength of this hotel is the whole package. Beautiful garden area and stunning public areas. Room was small with very inefficient air con. No air con in bathroom and no extractor fan either. Beautiful breakfast but heavily overpriced menu at pool restaurant.

The hotel experience was so romantic - spectacular bougainvillea and jasmine abundantly on the terraces and in the loggia where the pianist serenades every evening. The location is superb, overlooking the sea and mount Etna. The rooms overlooking the sea are glorious, elegantly decorated and bathrooms endlessly filled with Molton Brown supplies.
Breakfast takes up an entire room and contains every possible choice except that greater variety of fresh fruit should be available - only prepared pineapple, oranges and melon were served and the same daily for the whole week.
The pool is lovley and long and teh pool bar staff very helpful. Pool only open from 9am which seems very late for early swimmers, but the hotel made a helpful concession for us to swim from 8am.

Recent Stay at the San Domenico Palace
We recently stayed at the San Domenico Palace last week for 3 nights as part of our honeymoon. The best part about this hotel was definitely the breakfast - great selection and views. We also enjoyed the central courtyard for drinks in the evening. The location is also great, just a quick few steps away from Corso Umberto (the main street in Taormina). The hotel was also nice enough to send a bottle of Prosecco to our room for our honeymoon.
I do think that the rooms need a major updating. Our room had two twin beds pushed together to form a King - this was extremely uncomfortable considering there was a groove in the middle of the bed.

Amazing and huge facility . Super breakfast buffet. Quiet. Helpful staff. Very pleasant internal courtyard for relaxing or having a drink or tea. Amazing views . Staff will take your car and park it for you but driving up to Taormina is not for the faint of heart!! Free shuttle to a nice beach but reserve a space early because shuttle is small. Need to pay for chair and towel at beach. If you also need to take a taxi - it gets quite expensive

We stay at many LHW group properties, and each is very distinct. Perhaps this hotel would be better in better weather. Our room was two small rooms with worn out furnishings and an outdated bathroom. The hotel breakfast buffet was very well laid out with wonderful service. The hotel lobby has little sitting available. Internet is only free in common areas, must pay for use in room which seemed a bit silly. It was centrally located and an easy walk to anywhere in Taormina. This was our second visit to Sicily, so our next we will try a different hotel.

Ten year report: Taormina has changed; San Domenico has not
We visited Taormina for the first time 10 years ago. The town was a gem - tourists \"dressed\" to come to this ritzy enclave high above the Mediterranean Sea riddled with 5 star hotels, great restaurants, upscale shops selling top quality Italian clothes, Sicilian ceramics and antiques. Ten years have past and the tourist throngs in their buses and cruise ships have found this spot, and the streets are jammed with large tour groups and the quality of the shops has changed accordingly.
That said, the time we spent at the San Domenico, wandering its storied property was an absolute delight. There's no better place to have a late afternoon refreshment than in the gorgeous courtyard.

we stayed at the san domenico for three nights, the first night was in room 379 which in the morning was next to the bottle collection (at 6am) and an industrial airconditioning unit which was terribly noisy. We moved the next morning to a \"monk room\" in the old part of the hotel, which though small, was beautifully quiet. The hotel location in Taormina was brilliant and the views, breathtaking.....really helpful late check out was a bonus...

The hotel was originally an old monastery and has retained plenty of character. Staff are very friendly and helpful and the public areas are very nice. Our room had a fantastic view of the bay, gardens and Mount Etna, although the room itself was quite small with tired decor. However, our real criticism is that drinks and food were exceptionally expensive.
