The hotel is very old fasion. The food in both breakfast and dinner was very dissapointing - not wjat would you expect from a 5 stars hotel. The air conditionin the room was noisy. Check-oit took a lot of time. The staff in the reception was not so kind.

We stayed here for 10 nights and on the whole we enjoyed our stay.
The location is fabulous, right on the coast, the gardens and grounds were lovely and well maintained. The rooms were big, and nice balcony and outlook. The cleanliness of the hotel was superb, I’ve never seen such a clean pool area, loved being in the pool! Cleaning of room was great and friendly staff.
2 negatives that have to be stated to give a true reflection of the hotel… the food is definitely sub par, we had the buffet 2 nights and 3 nights in the Al a carte dining. Only one of which was decent. We ate out the last 5 nights. The breakfast is ok, but nothing special. It has to be stated otherwise people may be disappointed with this being branded as a 5 star, the food is probably 3 star at best. The other minor issue was that the beds were relatively soft, however this is more personal preference than anything else.
Overall don’t expect a 5 star but we were prepared for it being more 4 star than 5,l star, we did enjoy our stay once we had decided we would have our evening meals out with the hotel.

We had a good stay, the reception staff are very welcoming and friendly. Room was clean and there was plenty of spare towels, pillows etc.

We went on half board basis. Although there was plenty of food, it lacked taste. Buffet menu needs to improve, especially the hot food for vegetarians. Very insipid.

Also we felt cheated because we asked for tap water at dinner and got charged for it! The head waiter takes the order for drinks and we felt it was his duty to inform customers that they charge even for tap water! It is ironical that they give free prosecco and at breakfast, but charge for water at dinner!!
Customers can make an informed decision about ordering water if the hotel can make them aware of their charges.
Overall, the staff are hard working and try very hard to do their best. Not a bad place to stay but be prepared to pay for your water at dinner!

Great location, great staff and amenities

Great location with all available amenities. Easy access to Forum Madeira mall as well as Funchal attractions. The staff are extremely positive and proactive to make your stay comfortable. Only negative is that the hotel needs a revamp with the flooring in the common areas, the dining area a bit run down. The rooms are really good size but again, the furniture needs a revamp.

Great location. We walked the Lido everyday to Praia Formosa and we walked one day to Funchal (60 minutes). We also used the Yellow Hop On Hop Off bus which had 2 stops really close to the hotel.
The staff could not be more helpful. Ask for a west facing room. We had a lovely ocean view, but could not see sunset from our balcony. No problem, easily seen from the pool area.

Excellent hotel - highly recommend.

Lovely hotel with great amenities. Excellent large room which was very comfortable. Beautiful gardens and quiet surroundings but about 1 hour walk to centre of Funchal. There is no hotel shuttle into Funchal - would be good if provided as buses are quite busy. Choice of restaurants was good and half board a good option although there are plenty of restaurants on the walk in to Funchal. There is no shuttle service from or to the airport - either taxi (€45 approx) or bus. Tea/coffee supplied on arrival but need to request after if more required as not automatically replenished.
Overall would highly recommend if you are happy to walk or bus to Funchal when needed.

We particularly enjoyed the outdoor pool area and the hotel generally was lovely.
The buffet restaurant was poorly organised for easy flow of guests. It was good to have alternative options. Some staff were excellent; others were possibly still being trained. If we asked for coffee, we needed to remember to ask for cups too!
Our sea view room was beautiful and spacious. Please get rid of the plastic mattress protectors though - so uncomfortable.

Madeira's a great spot to vacation and we thoroughly recommend the Pestana Grand Ocean Resort. It's in a quiet location - about 25 mins drive from the airport, so no flight noise and far enough away from the cruise ship dock to be impacted by their daily arrival - but still convenient for Funchal via bus or walking along the promenade. The staff were great and very friendly/helpful, the room we booked had a fine ocean view and was spotless. We'd certainly stay there again.

Stayed here during Christmas. The hotel is a little away from the city but probably has one of the best views. Lovely walking trail by the sea just as you walk out with some places to eat and tons of bars. We decided to go to Madeira during Christmas for its Christmas market since a lot of the other places are known to be closed on Christmas Day. The hotel staff is AMAZING and very helpful. They helped us arrange our excursions and we could not be happier. We were a large group too and they accommodated a lot of our requirements. The hotel is a little old and could do with a little upgrade. In all we had a great stay but given when we were there wished we had chosen something closer to the city of Funchal. Overall good hotel if views are what you are looking for.

This hotel has been the best hotel I’ve stayed in. I’ve traveled quite a bit but Pestana Grand has topped them all.
From the moment you walk in you are made to feel very welcome. The ladies at the front are very professional and very polite. Check-in was really fast, smooth and very informative of the amenities of the property and the surroundings. The hotel room was large, clean and very comfortable.
The restaurants are clean and well run with loads of dishes to choose from daily. All dishes are fresh and very tasty.
I stayed 5 nights and wish I could of stayed longer, but I will be back next year.
Great team work and well run hotel.
Keep up the good work team Pestana.

The resort is in a lovely quiet location. Our room was very comfortable with a great sea view. All of the resort staff were very professional, polite and helpful. I would like to point out one member of staff who was very helpful, Carmina on the reception desk.
There are lovely walks along the promenade but if you want to venture further afield the local bus stop and the tour bus stop is very near the resort. Staff at the resort will give you information about public transport. We bought a 5 day hop on hop off tour bus ticket, which took you into the centre of Funchal and other places of interest, this was very good value. There are taxis of course which are reasonably priced. The resort has a lot of facilities should anyone visiting there just want to stay around the resort. We went half board, which was good value for money. The buffet was good but my only criticism is that the vegetarian options were not clear enough in stating that they were vegetarian.
Overall it is a great place to stay and I would most definitely recommend it.

Location is good, very very quiet which contributes to relaxing feeling. Very beautiful surroundings too. However don’t expect a 5* experience. It is a solid 4* at best. Stuff is polite and welcoming but won’t stray from a narrow set of responsibilities. The food in the half board dinner and breakfast is good but not exceptional, it has enough variety but will not blow you away. The rooms are ok, good size LCD screens and generous size area with a good ocean view from most rooms. The beds were disappointing - very very firm (gave me a back pain). The pillows and the linen were just ok and cleaning was just passable (There was a lot of dust left on the bedside table for example, pillows were not straighten or arranged nicely). So don’t expect a 5* experience and you still can have a great holiday. Madeira is beautiful island, and the weather was surprisingly good - not hot not cold - just perfect. So you will be more than satisfied with your holiday but you will find the hotel itself slightly lacking the 5* monicker compared with mainland, UK or even the canaries. Hotel itself is pretty but cracks are showing here and there.

We had a great time in Madeira, but we were disappointed with this hotel.

On arrival, there was hair and nail clippings on the bathroom floor. Our mattresses were really uncomfortable. They felt as though there was a thin layer of cardboard on top. Air conditioner was broken and after three calls to get this fixed, I was given a fan and was told they were ordering a part. When I later asked if we could delay our checkout for a couple of hours, they told me they could not as someone would be using our room. They should not be putting guests in a room knowing the air conditioning is broken and it makes me wonder how long it’s been that way. The website says there is a shuttle into town, which there isn’t. You have to take the bus or a taxi. I paid for half board and we were only able to visit one of the three restaurants for dinner (once) due to them being booked up. I tried to reserve tables the day after we checked in, so I find this completely unfair. When I expressed my disappointment to a hotel staff member, he told me they were at maximum capacity. I spoke to another family who had booked into the Italian two nights in a row somehow, yet myself and my son weren’t accommodated at all. We at at the buffet at the restaurant every night aside from the one night at the Moroccan.

Pros were that there was more than enough chairs at the pool. We didn’t have to fight for them. The location is beautiful and you can walk along the promenade. Staff were pretty friendly.

It is meant for really old people. If you are a yound couple, don't go. Find something closer to Funchal city.

First of all, it's not a five star hotel by any stretch of the imagination! They advertise three restaurants but the good specialty restaurants are only open one at a time, hard to get into and out of our 10 day stay we were limited to 2 meals in these specialty restaurants. The rest of our meals were in the buffet. And who wants to stand in line at a coffee machine for a cup of breakfast coffee. In a five star hotel service is paramount!

The rest of the hotel was average.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Pestana Grand - it is a very comfortable hotel with lots of facilities and the staff were welcoming and helpful. Food in the restaurants is good and varied - apart from the buffet-style restaurant there are different otions on different nights - Italian, Madeiran and Moroccan. The hotel is located a few miles from the centre of Funchal, but provides a free shuttle bus for guests. My only criticism is that this bus could run slightly more frequently and a little later in the evening. However, the taxi fare is EUR 10 each way, so not too expensive. Definitely recommended, and worth paying extra for a sea-view room.

The so called \"Happy Hour\" with 50% discount was 50% less in the
glass.
Cocktails was tasteless ( using too much juice) and charging the
highest price. I don´t mind paying for the drink, but the quality must
be accordingly. We ( the wife and me) are using the bar very rarely,but
so much more disappointing when we do ,and the quality is miserable.

Being a bit off the beaten path meant an even quieter vacation. The staff and facilities were simply superb. And while there was no need to leave the resort property for food or drink, there were great dining options just across the street. Also easy proximity to bus transportation, and two good sized supermarkets. Will be back.

This hotel is excellent.
The grounds are beautifully kept and the access to the promenade walking path is a bonus.
Our room was clean and very comfortable.
The outdoor pool was too cool but the indoor pool has a lovely area you can swim out to and enjoy the fresh air.
Being able to look out over the cliffs to the sea was a real bonus and the hourly shuttle bus meant Funchal was totally accessible - in less than 15 minutes.
The buffet breakfast was superb with a huge number of choices and the option to eat outside was a great start to the day.
Absolutely recommend the Pestana Grand.

Nice location, great staff, but just misses !

Loved Madeira as a gentle warm winter getaway. Hotel was a little old fashioned in its style and decor, but all in very good condition and fully working.

Bedroom facing the sea / pool definitely worth the extra. Good size room with balcony. Air con a bit slow and noisey.
Staff very helpful. English speaking.
Marion in guest relations extra good! Organised car hire, advised on trips and taxis. Much better than the kiosks in town.

Use your room key card to get out into the promenade on the seaward side - nice evening walk to a selection of restaurants.

Funchal town Centre and restaurants a 25 min walk, but there are a few eateries within ten mins walk.

Hotel food a bit pricey.
Breakfast buffet good but coffee awful !
Lunch very limited. But tasty cheese toastie.

Pool not heated so in November is was way too cold to swim in - such a disappointment.

SUMMARY: ok hotel, good location, great staff.

Nice hotel - no beach

We arrived to the hotel by taxi and were dropped off right by the front door. There were no door staff or porters so it was necessary for us to manange our own luggage to the reception desk. The check-in process is quite slow with the various processes that need to be done. There was a welcome drink for the adults, which was declined by my wife as she did not want an alcoholic drink at the time. There was no option for her nor for our child. We were directed, but not escorted to our room and received no luggage assistance. In the room the air conditioning was not working. The maintenance man came to the room within a few minutes and was able to rectify the fault immediately. Later on we noticed that the TV remote didn't work, the toilet seat was loose, the flush mechanism stopped working and the magnifying mirror by the wash basin was loose and poorly located so that it wasn't as well lit as required.

Lovely hotel that pays attention to detail.

Really lovely yet professional staff. Fab location. There’s a gorgeous sea front promenade at the end of the hotel’s garden/ pool area that leads to a few local restaurants that are worth a try. It’s not far to walk to Funchal’s ‘hotel zone’ where there’s lots more going on and a short cab ride to the old town. Hotel rooms and toilets by the pool are kept really clean.

We visited at Easter and generally the hotel felt about half full, so it wasn’t very busy. Weather was good. Hotel is very clean with some minor repair needed in places; hotel staff are very friendly and always want to help. I suspect this may be harder in peak season. Buffets are good but overpriced. Spa is great - also when weather is cold and overcast. Most disappointed with Hotel entertainment. They put on an egg hunt for the kids when we arrived, but after this, nothing! The evening entertainment was desperate. It’s like the hotel doesn’t care about attracting its residents together in the evening to socialise or spend money at the bar. By the end of our week, it became too painful to sit and listen. We had a family room on the 3rd floor facing the rear garden. Had hire car and underground garage has plenty of parking. Lots of waking. Right on edge of the sea so sometimes windy. Amazing island. Would visit again and would be happy to stay at the hotel - clean and friendly. We went B&B only.

Just wonderful

The location is just amazing! The service is really nice too and the staff gives their best to achieve the guests expectations. Some facilities like the turkish bath needs a bit painting but everything is fine working. Probably one of the best values on the island given to the really good price and the location. Usually hotels use to live from the locations and have a light tendency to be sloppy, but this place exceeded our expectations! Thank you!

Luxury hotel overlooking the sea.

The buffet breakfast is excellent. The only small niggle is the that the coffee was awful - I could not even drink it.
We liked the indoor heated pool, as it was too cold to swim outside in January.
The shuttle bus into Funchal was excellent: regular and reliable.
The hotel and grounds were beautiful and all very well kept.
Funchal is a lovely town and there is plenty to visit.

On a list day we were told in the morning of the departure that they had a continental breakfast but because we did not know this prior we could not take advantage of this. In addition the room had numerous issues that could did not get resolved( hair dryer with turn off after 30 seconds, they say that was by Design. Because I have travel all over the world I've never had that issue. In addition the AC and heating did not work correctly.

Positive - wouldn't give the hotel full 5 stars as some parts need renovation (carpet in rooms, bathtub, old style televisions), but the rooms are huge and always squeaky clean and the staff has been nothing but nice and helpful in all circumstances. The location is amazing, would definitely recommend and go back there if I was to return to Madeira.

Experiencing high quality of holiday

The hotel gave us a great chance to experience the highest quality of holidays with super sea view rooms, huge and beautifully presented swimming pools, spa and indoor pool facilities, and high quality of breakfast. The hotel's location is also ideal in a modern area with good hotels, shopping centre around. We like especially the offering of a cup of Madeira wine at the reception and the champagne in breakfast.

Relaxing break

This is a very smart hotel and we enjoyed our week. The main disappointment (Hence a score of 4 - it would otherwise be 5) was the quality of breakfast. Extensive choice, but the quality wasn't brilliant. The tea wasn't hot enough, and the coffee was out of a machine an poor - only tried it once. we had a sea-view room with a nice balcony, and I would agree with an earlier reviewer that a room on an upper floor would be better. We were on the 1st floor, and looked out through the palm trees. The indoor swimming pool wasn't hugely warm, either the water or the area for sitting in, and for some reason the sauna is closed during the afternoons. We had a couple of the special dinners - the Italian which was superb and the Moroccan which was ok.

Good location and grounds but a bit dated

The staff at the hotel were excellent - very friendly and helpful. The grounds were fantastic and the entrance impressive. The rooms, although comfortable and clean, had dated decor left over from its old 5-star past. These days 5 star hotels have moved on to modern and sumptuously decorated rooms - the Pestana Grand wouldn't quite fit in that category for me but it is a lovely, peaceful hotel with enough activities to keep the family engaged.

Excellent hotel with great views

This hotel and staff are fantastic definitely would recommend staying here. Staff even make special effort for birthdays adding that personal touch while away from home.
Breakfast is great as are evenings in the hotel with a variety each night

Nice hotel but a long way out of town

You will need to ask for milk if you like it with your tea and coffee in your room. It is quite a long way out of Funchal, about an hours walk, but there is a free bus service which is good. The breakfast was excellent. Make sure you book a room with a sea view! Our room was comfortable but the bathroom smelled of stale urine all the time!

Elegant Hotel to feel confortable

My experience.

On our arrival we were welcomed by a very nice reception lady. While signing all the relevant forms etc we noticed the date on the on the paper work only had us staying for one night and not the seven we booked. It all then came apparent our room with a sea view that we booked eight months in advance was unable until the next day. We was then offered an evening meal and a massage as compensation (both very nice) however at the time l was disappointed as we had no choice but to accept this. I can fully appreciate mistakes can be made and compensation was offered as an apology however as a five time returning customer to a Pestana 5 star Hotel would have expected errors like this not to happen in the first place. When we moved into the room we should have had in the first place, it was perfect but I still feel I was robbed of a day!.
