Beautiful place to stay and excellent staff. Lovely food. The rooms are superb. Great to see the management team encouraging and training keen new talent too. We enjoyed the included daily (early morning/sunrise or late afternoon/sunset) game drives too. It was our second trip and we’d definitely stay again.

Food isn't good, very high in fat, carbs and sugar. No healthy options asides from salad which it doesn't really count.

They have a ton of staff but they aren't customer service focus more like out to lunch. Nobody greets you or even look at you, they avoid eye contact. Definitely didn't feel welcome.

Hotel itself it's fine and basi amenities need improvement and easier access to use them.

The safari drives are chaotic needs more planning and organization.

The room was clean, the evening turn down service unexpected. The refreshments in the room were lovely. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. The buffet breakfast and dinner were superb with a good variety of fresh foods. The Boma braai was a unique and lovely experience.

The spa facilities were simple but the treatments were top class really relaxing and well priced.

Beds were really comfortable the shower was large with a view of the pilansburg park. Rooms were luxurious and spacious. In room facilities were great with daily refresh of water, coffees, teas and biscuits etc...

The included game drives were always entertaining and enjoyable

Highly recommend my stay, it was a great getaway from city life.

If 1 recommendation I can make would be to include more high protein vegetarian meals for the included dinner.

The area is wonderful, the game drives were the highlight of our trip, we saw different animals on each ride. The lodge was good too, the staff was friendly, food was ok, it was a bit noisy to be in a room by the pool but there was no option to select the room location on Expedia. Inside it was a bit dated and there were bugs (but it is in the wilderness so hard to keep them out). There were elephants coming almost to the restaurant which was amazing to see them right there. The entire idea to put this lodge at edge of the park is brilliant, it was a great experience overall

We had an amazing stay at Bakubung! The staff were all so friendly and accommodating. Our flight from Cape Town was delayed by several hours so we arrived at the lodge close to 10pm. Not only did they respond to my email quickly to reassure me that the late check-in would be no problem, but the receptionist quickly guided us to the restaurant as soon as we arrived, as the kitchen was closing and she wanted to make sure we had something to eat before bed. The chef was about to leave for the night, but she stayed to accommodate us. We were so grateful and assured her anything that was quick and easy to make would be perfectly fine with us, and not to trouble herself more than necessary. She asked if pizza was okay and we said that would be perfect. Well… she ended up making us a beautiful salad, a pizza, large bowls of pasta and a tray of desserts! Totally above and beyond all expectations and everything was delicious. The restaurant staff stayed to serve us as well and were very kind. We also happened to get a room upgrade, as the standard rooms were oversold which was a nice bonus. We are so grateful for everyone’s thoughtfulness and extra kindness and hospitality during our stay.

The set up of the lodge is like a center parcs style safari stay. It may be pricy but if you factor in the game drive and half board, it is actually quite reasonable. The safari trips were excellent with the driver/guide providing excellent knowledge. We absolutely loved the bush braai with African entertainment. The room was amazing with everything we asked for provided with plenty of space. Lovely swimming pool and the view of the watering hole is second to none.

The best 6 nights of my life - my first safari

Absolutely had the best week of my life. The safari game drives were superb with very knowledgeable rangers, the food was brilliant, the boma dinners & entertainment were incredible and I have been in a kind of stunned silence since I came home.
I had a wheelchair accessible room - it was fine for me but some of the paths around the site are very steep. Made my acquaintances with one particular bush several times. The monkeys are hilarious at breakfast time when they start taking everything but I do appreciate that’s not meant to be entertainment & can be a nuisance for staff. I absolutely loved everyone & they even “valet parked” my powerchair for me when I got myself onto the safari trucks.

We enjoyed the experience of sleeping so close to the animals. Game drives were exciting and very informative. We thoroughly enjoyed having Chu-Chu as our ranger on 2 of the drives.

Bakubang Bush lodge experience

Visited Bakubang Bush Lodge over the weekend had a great time rooms were neat and clean. The game drive experience was amazing had no regrets to wake up at early and attend the 5h30 drive. Breakfast and dinner were delicious lots off varieties to choose from and I loved that the menu is different every day. The chefs and staff over this weekend at Bakubang 5th-7th Jan 24 really made our experience special and created lots of memorable moments will definitely come back to experience the bush braai was not aware that a pre-booking must be made and when requested to attend was informed that it was full. A suggestion to start the Bush braai dinner early 5-7pm then again at 7-9pm so that all guests booked have a chance to experience the bush braai when staying over a weekend.

The property was beautiful, what you got with the pride of the room was incredible, we could not believe a morning and evening safari , breakfast , and dinner . We did run into a problem with other guest creating noise and I wish that the hotel would have let the quest know that they were disturbing our peace , the assistant manager was incredibly understanding and worked with us to resolve and compensate us for the inconvenience. I will still say it was one of the most beautiful park , incredible property and I loved the old man at the restaurant, who attended to us when my husband was not feeling well .He made ginger tea and garlic tea and assured my husband that he will take care of him and he did . I am very ashamed of people who go on their vacation, expect to have a great time , yet they will not give any gratuities, they need to wake up and tip these people as they do not have a great life like us and they are always so great full when we do tip them .

Have stayed here before and as before the service by the staff was excellent and attentive. The lodge overlooks a waterhole. During our stay a small herd of elephants cam quite close to the lodge (we could view them from our balcony). The restaurant provides an excellent buffet for breakfast and dinne. The wildlife office houses a collection of snakes. From here you can book activities such as the bush walk. The game drives included in our stay were excellent with knowledgeable guides. The resort includes a swimming pool and a spa. Overall, highly recommended.

Bakubung is a lovely resort to enjoy the best of South Africa. It’s access to the Pilanesberg National Park is super and the views are stunning. It has its own waterhole which attracts birds, buck and we were lucky enough to see an elephant there. We found it to be good value compared to some of the ludicrously expensive alternatives in the area. The staff were friendly and attentive. We had a hotel room which included self-service buffet style dinner and breakfast (nothing super fancy but good wholesome food with lots to chose from for all the family) and one game drive per day. The room was comfortable and clean. The fridges don’t work well but the bar provided ice with no issue.
The game drives were the highlight. We did a variety of morning and evening. We preferred the evening. We saw four of the big five! The bush braai is great too.
Highly recommend for a good value experience.

We (family holiday) checked in a little late and the process was very quick and efficient. Staff during our stay were very friendly and accomodating.

The food was buffet for dinner and breakfast. All looked fresh and there was a great selection. All we tried tasted really good.

We also had a saffari in the morning it was an early start (05:30) and very cold, would recommned to dress warmly. The actual saffri was great go to see quite a few animals in their natural environment. The guide was very knowledgeable and was very good at explaining details about the animals.

Never got to try any of the other facilities but they all looked good.

My only regret was that we didn't stay longer.

The stay was overall good given the tranquil location. The game drive was also very good as we were able to see quite a lot of game. There were lots of food options and all well made. The kids holiday program was also a nice option for me as I could at least get a bit of quiet time although the take up wasn’t so good.

Only downside was the cleanliness of our room - the linen was clean but there were visible stains on the carpet and curtains which didn’t seem to be recent. I understand it’s a bush lodge but it is rated 4 stars so…

For the price paid, very disappointing!

Waiters were very scarce and seemed disinterested in being of service. At a table next to ours, the waitress gave a big sigh after filling the cups with coffee at breakfast as if this was a huge burden for her, very unpleasant to have to witness this.

Load shedding; we would expect electrically charged lights in the unit so that we can use the bedroom and bathroom without stumbling around in the dark.

The property itself was quite good. The first person at check-in was very poor. Very slow, unsure of everything, couldn't find our booking, gave us the wrong information about meals and game drives. Generally not very helpful, although I guess she was pleasant. We went back to the front desk later to ask about our queen bed (we got two doubles) and it was like night and day. They were sold out if queen beds but the lady behind the desk was switched on. Very helpful, friendly and knew exactly what she was doing.

Overall the property is nice but expensive unless you want the game drives. We do the self drive so I'm not sure it was worth it. The rooms are nicely appointed but nothing special. The meals that were included were good.

Its all about service, or the lack thereof

We stayed at Bakubung previously on a number of occasions. Overall we really enjoy Bakubung in terms of locality and general atmosphere. However what was really disappointing on this stay was the level of service received from staff, starting with reception on check in. They were borderline rude to say the least. There was a general power failure leaving rooms without electricity which was being attended to, the person next to me at reception, an international guest, was inquiring on an expected restoration time. The receptionist gave her a short shrift answer \"I told you they are working on it\". I think was highly unprofessional and it does not matter how many times the same question is asked by a guest any member of staff should remain courteous at all times. The waiting staff at the swimming pool area were utterly unhelpful and the are around swimming pool were littered with used glasses, left over food from lunch, etc. Hotel management were conspicuous in their absence. South African tourism is getting on track after Covid 19 lockdowns, I really feel that Legacy should step up staff training at Bakubung or this hotel will slip off the radar. Covid 19 is no excuse anymore. Bakubung is one of the best hotels at Pilansberg to stay in my mind, but the People of Hippo must step up in terms of service and do so very quickly as well.

This was our first trip to Bakubung and we will be returning. These room was large with daily views of warthogs, mongoose, guinea hens, monkees, zebras, and impala(not guaranteed, they are wild animals and roam at their liesure. The daily game drives provided opportunities to see the wildlife up close and learn about them, James was a great guide with an eagle's eye for animals. Although scarce, we were able to see 4 of the 9 cheetahs one morning. For a trip at your own pace, you can take your car into the nature reserve and go at your own pace, there are several potholes, but most cars and all SUV/trucks will work. The food was amazing, with a chicken, beef, or lamb available every night. A vegetarian option is also available if needed. Overall, a great and safe place to visit the bush in South Africa.

Excellent overall. Genuinely friendly and helpful staff and in sufficient numbers that you are not left waiting or can't find someone to ask a question. Accommodation was very clean and comfortable within beautiful settings. Some rooms facing the pool whilst some, the villas in particular, faced open grassland and a waterhole. Brilliant game drives and at reasonable times, especially if you have children. Great location and setting and easy to drive to from airport - roughly 2 hours.

My only small disappointment was that the food seemed to cool down more quickly than i would have liked. Not sure if it needs to be hotter to start with maybe?

Had a wonderful 2 night stay. We were in the main hotel area, on the ground floor of one of the two floor buildings. Beautiful grounds, the staff were all friendly, check-in was simple (we booked through Expedia) and the breakfast and dinner buffet had an excellent assortment of food to choose from. Did on safari ride. Others have written about the bad condition of the roads within the park. That is true, though it did provide an authentic \"off-road\" feel - literally. Our safari guide Clement was superb. I very much recommend a stay here.

This is a high end property in a gorgeous setting and rooms are amazing with the thatched roofs. Service is not quite up to the level I would expect of a resort like this.
Small things like coffee not being replaced in the rooms daily, restaurant service is slow (buffet style) and is not always ready at the listed times.
Game drives are awesome but a lot will depend on the driver (guide) . Our first drive was incredible and the guide was knowledgeable even though we didn’t see a lot of animals , the second was with a guide who could barely drive and was clearly just trying to make it through the day until he could go home. The third drive was a little better but the guide had little passion

All in all I was happy with the stay but I’ve stayed in better lodges in the Pilanesberg in the past

A great stay

We had an amazing stay at Bakubung Lodge. The room was clean and maintained well during our stay. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The food is so delicious and the restaurant staff serve you with a smile always. Our driver during the game drive made sure we experience the beauty of the Pilanesburg Game Reserve and we had an opportunity of seeing 4 of the big 5 animals. Lion, Buffalos, Rhinos and Elephants. We had a wonderful stay at the lodge. Thank you Bakubung.

Lovely place with lots to do for the kids. The hippo pool such a hit with animals coming for water while you are having meals or sundowners. Kids can see snake teachings and have their own explorer activities.

Disappointing…not a 4 star

Very disappointing stay in Bakubang this time. Room allocated ( in central buildings) was looking nothing like on the picture. I requested to change room, after 1,5 hour they moved us to other room in east wing with better view but very old bathroom with moldy shower and water damage on the bathroom furniture… in general room was old and desperately needed renovation… the problem is that we came back to Bakubang because we had very good stay in March 2021 and didn’t expect these issues at all!!! Last visit we got room in central wing that was looking exactly like on the photos and good position. With new clean bathroom.

Anniversary in Pilanesberg

We chose the Pilanesberg National Park as it is relatively close to JHB for a short break. The lodge was excellent and more 'upmarket' than we were expecting. The food was exceptional and the staff were very careful about following Covid rules. Our room was spacious and clean. We found a wide variety of game everywhere in the park. After our first group game drive we decided to go on our own as the field guide we were allocated to was really nice, but clearly also new and had very limited knowledge of the animals and none about birds. This was the only minor disappointment in an otherwise amazing trip. Will definitely go back.

PS Drivers: There is a really nasty half km stretch of road (where you can't see it, but the camber is all over the place). Going Towards Sun City there is a pretty nursery on your left side as you go through a village but 6 km further on from there you hit the uneven patch; it's short, but suggest you don't speed on it.
