The hotel was mostly old and dated which isn’t a huge issue for me except that the bottom floor had a terrible musty smell (unsure if it was coming from inside or the stagnant looking pond outside the doors).

The dining area was very dark and the food, although a large spread, wasn’t the greatest (although as a vegetarian I can’t speak to the meat options). For example, the pancakes were always hard from sitting in the warmer, the yogurt was watery and the granola was stale. It is difficult to get hot drinks and every day we did not get them until we were done our food. The tea also tasted very odd (perhaps made with unfiltered water?). We all developed some mild GI issues while staying here, unsure if it was from the food/water or something unrelated.

The rooms were decent (no balcony in our room which was a big disappointment as the photos showed a balcony for our room type). Room service never replaced our one tiny bar of soap (for 4 people) and when I asked the person who came to offer towels for soap they said they didn’t have one and did not offer options to get one.

The concierge service was very poor - usually no one at the desk and we would get conflicting information on activities from different staff when we did speak with them.

The good things about this hotel are the pool area (one heated pool, which was nice but almost too warm, along with one unheated) and the location (directly across from the central mall.

We would definitely not stay here again.

A tonne of staff who dont do a lot by way of service. Ignoring you is their speciality and talking loudly amongst themselves is their true talent. For a 5 star venue its terrible, it ranks more as a 3.

The hotel is ok, but service levels are lousy.

In particular, my experience at the Luma Bar was atrociously bad. After waiting for 20 minutes for any kind of service, I got fed up and ordered a drink from the bar. Then after they brought me the (correct) order, a few minutes later another waiter came over and asked me if I’d started drinking it, in a weirdly accusing way. I don’t know if he thought I’d been given someone else’s drink, or if there was something else going on. In hindsight, the vibe was such that someone could even have contaminated the drink (seriously - it was weird - I should have walked out).

Then there was a stupid debate about the bill. I’ve never been in an alleged 5-star hotel where you couldn’t just charge it to the room. The guy could have just checked, but instead he started arguing about it. And in the end I charged it to the room anyway.

So I’ll never return, and my recommendation would be you don’t go either.

Loved the surroundings, the gardens, the activities and how close it is to Pilanesberg. Breakfast was amazing. Well worth it.
Grill room at the palace. Amazing food.

We had a dreadful check in, my worst check in ever. Upon arrival the reception notified us that the System cancelled our booking, after travelling for more than 10 hours, being tired already, this was not good news.
The manager was called, no sympathy, not re-assurance, the were just busy on the phone and on the system the whole time, we showed them our confirmed and paid booking and we also show our bank statement where the money was deducted.
After an hour of standing around, not knowing what is happening, they finally gave us a room.
No compensation, no sympathy, nothing.
Room was very nice, large, great bathroom, but the bathroom is just a bit smelly, we did report it.
Nice TV with various channels.
Breakfast was amazing, but all staff at the Cascades are unfriendly, which was not nice.
Would rather stay at one of the other places in future.

Unfortunately not a 5-star experience

Although the hotel was fine, it appeared rather dated with very slow elevators and the value for money is questionable. Rooms were clean, but the service all over the property were not really up to standard for a 5 star hotel. Check-in was slow and and the Gatsby Spa did not change our booking as requested telephonically, so we ended up not going at all.

The hotel is in need of a facelift. The rooms are comfortable but not 5*. There is a palpable lack of management presence. Breakfast on Saturday was very chaotic. Having to rely on waiting staff to bring milk for cereal and coffee is a terrible idea. There are not enough of them. Check in was slow on Friday evening. The staff just don't seem to have any basic manners. They are constantly shouting at one another and ignoring customers. A bit of basic etiquette. That isn't to say that they are malicious or intentionally rude because one on one each of my interactions was positive. In general though there is a disconnect between the star rating and the general service level. You should not have to ask to have things done at a 5* hotel. The staff should know to take bags to rooms, service rooms, notify customers when there is a water problem... etc.

Large, clean, very nice room...zero complaints...until you open the drapes. ONLY get a high floor. We were on the third floor (lobby level) and the view was garbage. Dirty grounds, hoses everywhere, really nasty for the price. They should greatly reduce the rates on lower floors...I would have gladly paid more to be higher. Again, great room but get above the horrific view.

What was once an impressive 5-star hotel is now a disappointing experience. Lack of investment means it is very dated. Only one out of three lifts working most of the time. Sun International should be ashamed. This does not represent a 5-star hotel.

A beautiful hotel. For a five star hotel it had a few disappointing points. A lot of the crockery was chipped. Being attended to at breakfast also was very slow. The room we were assigned to hadn’t been properly cleaned so they put us in another room where the air conditioning didn’t work. They only came the next morning after I asked twice for it to be checked.

Dining room waiters need to be trained to a 5 star standard. Broken cupboard doors in dining room need to be rehung. The hallway on the 5th floor leading to our bedroom smelt damp and musty. In the bedroom the windows had not been cleaned recently, there was no desk lamp, the AC was totally ineffective and the TV, refrigerator and coffee station failed to work during the second night we were there. One ply toilet paper is unacceptable in a 5 star resort. One light bulb not working in one bedside lamp.

The Cascades is certainly not a 5 star hotel. Nor is the service. Our sliding door came off the rails as it hadn’t been cleaned in I’m sure months. It took nearly an hour for someone to come fix it after calling 4 times.
Our appliances were not working - and while we called for it to be fixed - it was not.
There was a live cockroach in our room.
There was very little service in by the pool area so we went to another pool.
The breakfast area was also minimally serviced and when ordering a coffee it was brought from another location so only came once you had finished eating.
The list goes on.
When we went to reception before checking out - and I tried to explain all these issues - the lady at reception stopped me and said she doesn’t deal with complaints.
I spoke to the complaints manager who advised I email all these details. Which I did. It took nearly 2 weeks for her to reply apologising for the service received.
Don’t expect too much staying at the Cascades Hotel

My children really loved the activities at Sun City. This hotel was very convenient to Valley of the Waves and had its own nice pool. The hotel was pretty and clean. The food was pretty good and there was a mall attached where you could eat as well. The staff was very nice and housekeeping worked overtime. Certain things that you would expect to work at the hotel didn’t work at all. Two out of three elevators at the hotel didn’t work during our stay. We were lucky and could take our luggage up the stairs but other guests spent 1/2 hour getting to or from their room. Our shower only had hot water at first. They don’t put out coffee in the morning. We had to buy water and bring it to our room. The sofa bed is comfortable for one person but not two.

The standards in Sun City are not like before it is deteriorating more like a three star.The price I paid is an overcharge
The two single beds were so small. Not fitting the price paid.

The Good- Sun city is a great family resort with plenty to see and do. On the whole most of the staff are very friendly and accommodating.great pools and restaurants.

The Bad- the cascades hotel is very drab and dated unfortunately. Our non smoking room had cigarette burns on the carpets and chair, tv and aircon did not work properly and the access card to open our door stopped working at least 8 times in the 4 days we were there. This is definitely not a 5 star hotel especially at the price charged.

Faded grandeur. Only 1 out of 3 lifts working during our stay. Staff were slow to serve and breakfast process was arduous - I had to go into the kitchen to enquire about my egg order as no waiting staff could be found. They managed to avoid all eye contact.
No cold water to bath in on 2 separate occasions.
Hail storm damage also meant soggy carpets, leaking ceilings and pool unavailable. While that was disappointing, it was understandable due to the extreme weather.

Sun city is amazing but the hotel is very outdated

Sun city is amazing but the cascades hotel needs a total refurbishment. The rooms smell really musty and very outdated. No gowns and slippers. Very bad WiFi and hardly any channels on the tv. For the price you are paying you definitely deserve more. The staff were friendly but nothing super amazing. The breakfast was ok but you had to ask often for things that were supposed to be on the table.

Stayed here many times before. Love Sun City and the game reserve next door BUT the hotel has nose dived. Two single beds were pushed together and called a double luxury room. Lame.
AC barely worked.

I can only imagine what the Soho and Cabanas must be like if the Cascades were this terrible.

I booked 4 non smoking room and paid one month advance. But they sent us to smoking rooms and it took them 8 hours to find one non smoking room. So we had no choice to stay in 3 smoking rooms with kids due to rooms are fully booked !! No slippers in the room ! The refilled bottle water in room tastes like tap water . Some Bathroom lights doesn’t work .

We opted for the medium option of Cascades which was £200 a night for B&B in low season. I know the resort is in the middle of no where but I don’t think it was worth that price. The rooms were a good size but in desperate need of a revamp and freshen up. The food was of a good standard rather than exceptional. Facilities though we’re excellent.

The hotel looks tired and needs to be refurbished. The dining options are very few and the only restaurant on the premises was closed for a private function on a Friday? This left only QSR type options in the Entertainment centre or a poolside menu where there are no tables.

This was my election after the Lost City Hotel at Sun City. The pictures showed a different issue. It is a 5 star hotel but the facilities were not as expected; the carpet was dirty in the room, the carpet in the halls was stinky. Only one elevator was working, the swimming pool was not heated; I planned to enjoy with my family but my small kid (2 years old) wasn't able to swim due to the temperature. Unfortunately, the price does not correspond for the staying.

First trip to Sun City!

When I was younger I always watched the Million Dollar Golf Challenge at Sun City, it is now called the Ned Bank Tournament. I promised myself I would go to Sun City and play golf and stay in the iconic Cascades Hotel. So pleased I did. We had such a wonderful eight days.

On arriving at the hotel we were immediately upgraded to a room with a balcony, very nice! All the staff at the hotel are very helpful and nothing is to much trouble.

All the restaurants at the resort were excellent and very good value for money. And there is such a choice as well. There is so much to see and do there as well, we went on a 3 hour safari and saw Lions, Elephants, Rhino, Zebra, Wilder beast and Hyena. The casino is great fun as is the Valley of Waves.

All in all a fabulous holiday. We will be going back asap.

Decent hotel in a fantastic location

Decent rooms, courteous staff and a great breakfast, finished with a good pool surrounded by amazing \"forest\", illuminated at night, and fed by cascading waterfalls. Monkeys came through the forest, pretty birds chirping and only thing missing was an on-site convenience store... but the location and access to the Welcome Centre and all the food court and entertainment of Sun City, including Valley of the Waves and The Maze... makes this our preferred hotel when we go back next year!

Very disappointing!
Stayed in same hotel 16 years ago and hasn’t been decorated since!!! In desperate need of a face lift. Carpets are filthy, windows in need of a deep clean & floor tiles in lifts broken.
Lifts rarely work. Service by the pool area awful & swimming pool is filthy.

During our 5 day stay, of the 3 elevators guests could use to all 15 floors, 90% of the time only 1 elevator was fully functional. Room was clean, however lights not working, panels coming off doors and tv not working was not a good start to the holiday.
Valley of Waves should be Valley of Wave since the wave pool only produces a single wave every so often so rather disappointing.
Overall stay was ok, but The Cascades definitely does not deserve a 5 star rating.

For a few hundred extra we could/should of stayed at the Palace. Huge difference in the rooms and the breakfast. Cascades is very well located, across from restaurant row and halfway between the Palace and the casino.
We booked a superior room which we were told is one of the nicest rooms in the hotel. It was ok. Queen bed, closet and bathroom. Never watched much TV (it was more like a little monitor) and the mini-fridge was cool, not cold.
We stayed for 5 nights, I asked about switching rooms, the suite was triple the price for an extra area of living room space.
All in all, it was a A- (8/10) and I would stay there again if the Palace was sold out.

Hotel Needs a Overhaul

Hotel in need of an OVERHAUL, rooms old and out dated for what you pay. When we arrived our safe was locked, we asked the front desk to get someone to look at it. They said maintenance was on there way 3 hours later still no one, by this time it was late after 10pm. So they said they will send someone the next day, we waited around for 1 1/2 hour still no one. We gave up and used our suite cases to look our valuable. The Maintenance crew needs to focus on customer service the place wasn't busy, especially when your coming from abroad.

Nice hotel but expected more

Hotel location is excellent and convenient but a few pointers based on our experience, given it is a 5 star hotel.
1. Hotel rooms are dated and could do with updating. That said the room is comfortable, is quiet and has a nice view.
2. Our room's drain was blocked and despite having them attend to it (staff were quick to respond), the issue remained. Not nice to have dirty smelly water bubble up through bath and basin with unpleasant smells.
3. Breakfast is good, but we found that the cutlery is not properly washed and found glasses with lipstick marks to be the norm. We also saw food stains on walls and areas which required maintenance, for example broken marble on steps.
4. The hotel pool, it was out of action when we arrived with their works apparently overshooting due to a leak needing to be fixed. As we went in late winter we specifically selected this hotel since the pool (when open) is glorious. It is also 1 of 2 pools on the entire site which are heated. Wish Expedia told us of this prior to booking as this was one of the main reasons for selecting this hotel, given we wanted our little ones to swim.

It's not all bad, believe me, but we paid a premium for this 5 star hotel and these are fundamental issues you would not expect to encounter with this rating.

Good hotel But shame pool out of action

I was pleasantly surprised about the quality of this hotel and the size of the deluxe rooms.
Nice breakfast menu and attentive staff a time breakfast . This time of year is relatively low season so there was a good staff to customer ratio.
Some parts of the hotel and rooms were in need of a little refurb, but very clean. Free transfer/ transport buses around the resort are a nice touch and very helpful.

However the whole reason for choosing this hotel was the heated pool of the 'cascading' waterfall fame.

Pool was closed for annual maintenance before we arrived, but was due to open by the time we got there. No email from hotel and no mention made in website that pool maintenance was ongoing and delayed and therefore no pool. :(

Paradise!!

We spent 2 amazing nights at Casades, Sun City. I couldn't fault the staff or service we received. There was also so many activities included in our accommodation. Highly recommend staying at Cascades.

We absolutely loved our stay. The kids were so happy to be so close to the entertainment centre. The staff was very professional. The only area to be improved on is the allocating of seats during breakfast. The process is extremely slow and travelling with small kids who are impatient doesn't make the experience better.

Great hotel in wonderful Sun City location

We stayed four nights to enjoy some relaxtion in Sun City after three days of game drives. Location and hotel suited us perfectly for this.

Nice hotel with nice pool and lot of things to do

We stayed for 1 night and really liked this hotel,if we had more time would definitely stayed few more days.They let us check in before 2pm and also let us check out after 11am.Breakfast buffet was delicious and dinner at Bocado was good...close to shops and other activities.Only few min walking to pick ups for safari, zip line etc...next trip to South Africa and Sun City we are definitely staying here again...
