The corridors look a little rundown but the rooms are fine. We had a balcony on the front of the hotel. The breakfast is top-notch and the breakfast room has a view of West Lake. The hotel is relatively secluded but in a perfect location by West Lake. There are lots of pictures in the hallways of famous people who stayed at the hotel like Vladimir Putin and Nelson Mandela.

The property is immense and very beautiful, however it does seem that a bit more care could be given to some aspects of the property. The carpets in particular had a few stains & spills on them across the hallways & in the rooms.
The staff are attentive and very helpful, the breakfast buffet was delicious with a wide range of options.
The location is exquisite, right on the picturesque West Lake.

The property would fit in perfectly into a Wes Anderson film.

Facing the west lake, it is best place to view the west lake. It is near Su Di and Lou Wai Lou, the famous restaurant. Temple Yue is 3 min away. Really love the breakfast there. The ginger tea brought us a warm morning during a code winter time. Two birds in the hotel lobby could green guests. And the most important, the hotel hosted a lot of political leaders in the past.

Great Resort Hotel in Xihu

Shangri-la Hotels, as a brand, is one of my favorite brands. The Shangri-la Hangzhou, overlooking the famous Xihu, is impeccably maintained and clean. The rooms are decently sized and comfortable. The staff is not obtrusive but always present and pleasant. The amenities are commensurate with the type of rooms. It is definitely a great hotel for leisure travel or vacation resort.

I'll definitely go there again on my next visit to Hangzhou.

we like two things about this hotel. First, its location is unbeatable. It is right next to the West Lake, 2 minutes walk from Yue Fei Temple, Gushan, Xiling Bridge, five minutes from the Louwailou Restaurant where you can have good food with an unparalleled view of the lake. Second, Shangri-La has an old-world graciousness that no ultra-modern fancy hotels can ever match, and the room is spacious and relaxing (we had the executive suite). It is not something everyone appreciates, but to older, more sophisticated guests with a taste for old-fashioned grace, this is a great virtue. Despite some small imperfections, this is our number one choice in Hangzhou.

Rude and insulting

Rude and insulting are two of the words I would use to describe my recent experience checking into the Shangri-La Hotel in Hangzhou. The young man that checked me in wore the golden keys of a professional concierge, a Les Clefs d’O. A professional he was not. He lacked politeness, hospitality and was outright rude.

Dirty carpets in the room so bad, you would not dare walk barefoot. A noisy ventilation system made it hard to hear the TV. A TV remote that would not work while sitting on the bed and required me to get up and stand in front of the TV to use it. Coffee and a coffee maker in the room, but no stir sticks (used the handle of our toothbrush for this). And a luggage room attendant that left our bags (with my work laptop) unattended, instead of locking them away.

Steven, the hotel front desk agent / concierge seemed irritated to be helping my wife and I check in. Twice he commented in Chinese “American”. Even with anti-American sentiment high in China right now, his deplorable and reprehensible behavior was inexcusable. Ordering me to give him my visa, not acknowledging or apologizing when I told him he should say “please”. What happened to the days when a hotel employee would thank a guest for returning and wish them a nice stay? At a high end hotel we should be able to expect a higher level of hospitality, even friendliness. I’ve been traveling to China for over 20 years and know the difference between being treated with disrespect and indifference.

It’s Simply not a Shangri-La

Have stayed at Shangri-La hotels for decades, and you do generally get what you pay for. A cut above. World-Class service. The feeling that it’s a really special experience.

Not here. Very, very disappointed. Worn and stained carpets. Old furnishings. Lackluster employees.

Check-in was slow, inefficient, and desk staff spoke poor English (felt like I was back in China in 1992). Concierge was in name only (more like a senior bellboy). Given the storied history of the hotel, was sad to see.

On the plus side, the hotel location is perfect, front-and-center of the most scenic and picturesque spot in China. Can’t beat that.

FYI, I e-mailed the management, and they did quickly respond-they do seem to have an upgrade plan in place (both facility upgrades and employee training).

I’d certainly stay there for the location, but calibrate your expectations. It’s simply not a Shangri-La.

Shangri-La Hangzhou is perfectly located. Within a quick walking distance of the lake and the famous Lou Wai Lou Restaurant. And since transportation can be a challenge in Hangzhou, this hotel is also a quick walk to the bus station, which can quickly and cheaply take you to the famous Green Tea Restaurant, Botanical Gardens, etc. The hotel also has numerous restaurants, and Garden Coffee had a great lunch buffet. Helpful, friendly staff!

Don't be fooled by the shangri-la branding as this is a very old Chinese hotel recently acquired by shangri-la. The hotel is in much need of a makeover and to my understanding will be happening in the coming year. Rooms were old and not really what I expected from a shangri la hotel. Location was excellent, right by the West Lake, which to be honest is really the only redeeming quality. Maybe wait to stay here after their renovations or stay at the shangri la in downtown hangzhou instead.

The hotel is dated and you will not miss it but it is generally clean and tidy, and quite roomy. Hotel staff and service is the best part. There was some kind of periodic banging noise in the building somewhere during the first couple of days of stay - annoying but not a deal killer. I killed an inch long cockroach that crawled into my sanitary bag - that was a hair raising experience.

Location good but service could be better

Being our first time stay in Hangzhou with my elderly mother, we chose Shangri La due to its proximity to the lily ponds of West Lake as recommended by a friend. We were given a lakeview room in the East Villa which is rather dated but sufficiently comfortable.
Hotel reception staff was friendly but when asked for transportation and sightseeing information, the somewhat sullen young concierge was less than helpful and only provided piecemeal info when pressed. The concierge the next morning doesn't seem to know the area well as he advised us to walk a longer distance to the Yuamiao bus station when the earlier bus stop is located just at the hotel driveway, a 2 min walk to the hotel entrance !!
Tips :
- the hotel has East and West Villa which are connected by a 4 min indoor passage; the swimming pool and gym is located in another separate building near the East Villa
- the West Villa is right on Beishan St and there are tourist maps and info at the concierge desk, something lacking in the East Villa; staff are more pleasant and volunteered greetings to guests
- there are a number of public buses running in Beishan Street; #7 to train station, #51 (access to Hei Fang St with pedestrian walking street and lots of eateries) and 52 are round the lake routes, #27 to the tea museum

I order a Rome for 3/20-3/22, and when I check in on 3/21, hotel told me, they don't have any room for me, I wait half hour for room, and they gave me a final answer is we have extra room, but u have to pay that for 1600RMB! Nice hotel in excellent location by lake

The location of this hotel is terrific, and is its main asset - right by the northwest corner of West Lake. It's rather grand-looking, and has indeed had many distinguished visitors (no doubt in a fancier part than the wing we were in). Our room was fine, somewhat less well-appointed than a more modern establishment. But the old-world style had its charm. In addition to immediate access to the Lake, there is an interesting hike up the hill behind the hotel, to a cave and various other points of interest. Its also near the Louwailou restaurant, on a mini-island connected to the mainland - founded in 1838 and Hangzhou's most famous restaurant (beggar's chicken, dongpo pork, sweet and sour carp).

The hotel has west and east building about half a mile apart. Expedia should have specified which building. Also, either Expedia made a mistake by writing my last name as first name. It took hotel staff some time to find my reservation because Chinese could not get access to Expedia's US site. The hotel is located at the prime location closed to all major scenic spots. Some are within walking distance. However, the facility is a little outdated and the king size bed is combined by two twin bed and their is a gap in the middle of the bed. It bothers if you happen to sleep in the middle.

Really nice location close to the lake, however the amount of trees between you and it mean you can't see it. Glad I didn't pay for the Lake View room as I don't know how you would be able to see it! The Garden View room we had didn't have a view over the garden and was rather small and dated considering that this is not a cheap hotel.

On the plus side the staff are rather pleasant. And the room was very clean.

Bed Bugs and Food Poisoning

Checked in for 2 nights - room was was non smoking but had smokers had used the room .. Asked to be relocated to another room which was nice.. Had breakfast and partner got food poisoning from the breakfast so spent 2 days in bed. Bed had bed bugs and received over 50 bites. Overall was a worst hotel stay in 25 years in Asia. Have been staying at the hotel for over 20 years. Serious issues and not the the Shangri-la Hotel standard..

The Shangri-La is located next to West Lake, in a quiet location, yet close to everything.

For an extra $30, they upgraded my room to the Horizon Club level...free breakfast and drinks and an extraordinary view of West Lake. Even a private balcony.

The hotel could use a bit of updating, but it was still a great experience.

We were asked to pay extra to upgrade to lake view room so that we didn't have to change rooms, but the room we were given did not actually have a view of the lake; instead we had a view of the building in front of us. We complained (we should not have had to) and was moved to another room.

Located strategically next to Xihu (or West Lake), I'd planned to stay in this hotel ever since I passed by during my impromptu visit 6 months ago. It didn't disappoint - hotel facilities were great, staffs were friendly and helpful whenever you needed them. However, the hotel rooms are in dire needs to be refurbished as they looked dated. Apart from that, it was cosy, spacious with great view of the lake (where I stayed).
One more thing, the hotel is separated by East & West Wing. My advise is to stay in West Wing as it's nearer to boat ride and shops in Xihu.

Perfect location, needs uplifting

A hotel which feels old. Everything works, everything is clean and the staff work exceptionally hard to make it all work but one wonders why it hasn't been refitted, brought up to date. It's a perfect example of a hotel from the 70's, 80's with the design and colour to match. Noisy, struggling air conditioning resulted in room changes and one got the feeling that this was all too familiar to the staff rather than an exception. The situation is fantastic, exquisite with fabulous gardens and onto the lake save the noisy relentless road between the two. The antiquated, inadequate spa and health centre with the airbrushed photos on the website is the most that the management have done to give it an uplift.
Great for the buffet lunch but dinner was similarly tired with empty, early closing museum piece restaurants. Rather sad, seems to have been forgotten about by the Shangri La group .

The first Shangri-la in China, the hotel's rooms and amenities are not up to the newer Shangri-las around China. Nonetheless, the location and views from the higher floors are magnificent. The service tries hard enough but it is tough for them to achieve the extremely high standards of one of the finest hotel chains in the world. The price reflects the condition and is fair so you get what you pay for.

Very nice hotel for the East Wing. West wing is a bit old and doesn't have sofa. I stayed both. Overall is satisfying, except the pricey breakfast and taxi fee. I only pay RMB 12, from Huanglong Stadium to hotel, but when I book through hotel , they charged RMB 30 still + RMB 12 for the meter (Total is RMB 42), same as go to West Bus Station hotel charge RMB 65, meanwhile I only pay RMB 25 if I get the taxi by my own. You can easily stop taxi in front of Hotel, wait a lttle is worth.

West Lake

Good trip to West Lake and all seemed fine until we opened the door to the room. Current temperatures the day we checked in were 25c - 30c. Very warm for this time of year. The A/C in the room did not work, the system had not changed over from the winter yet and the hotel had no way to correcting this. Tried to open the windows, but because we had a lake view room the noise from the traffic made it very hard to sleep. I think for a 41/2 star hotel, this was unacceptable.

not at par with Shangri-La standard. service at the horizon club is ok. hotel is outdated and health club is not conveniently located inside the building. totally shocked that a luxury hotel such as Shangri-La would turned off the aircon especially when outside temperature ranging from 23 to 20 deg. cel. its not even winter or freezing cold. very uncomfortable, even if you open the window it does not help at all. very disappointed. will definitely NOT return to this hotel.

The rooms are older and much larger than modern rooms, but well maintained. Ours had a large balcony facing the front where the lake was, but trees blocked the view. Rooms facing the back of the hotel might be quieter, though not sure of their view. The bathroom was well appointed and the sheets/towels good quality. Location is wonderful, right on the lake. It's a nice walk to the other side where the restaurants are. Tea farms are an inexpensive taxi ride away.

If you are traveling to Hangzhou to see the famous West Lake, then this is the place to stay! Perched on the hill overlooking the lake, the views are stunning, especially from the Horizon Club Lounge's balcony. It is a short walk to the lake and the surrounding attractions, like the Expression West Lake light and music extravaganza, as well as western food establishments like Starbucks.

The service at the Horizon Club Lounge was excellent; both the breakfast (with eggs made to order) and the evening canapés and cocktails, as well as putting on an afternoon tea to get you from one to the other. The Italian restaurant had excellent pizza and the Garden Bar's outdoor was in a lovely setting, especially in the evenin with the lights on.

All of the staff were friendly, courteous and extremely helpful. Booking tickets for the show, arranging taxis, and smoothly checking in and out made for an enjoyable and relaxing stay.

Great location holiday hotel in Hangzhou

I wanted to watch the \"Impression of West Lake\" in Hangzhou by Zhang YiMou and a friend recommended this hotel. It is a wonderful choice as its only a stone throw from the show.

The hotel is a real classic, very well maintained, with modern convenience. We had the lake view room on the 5th floor. It has a wonderful view of Hangzhou Westlake from that level as its above the lush canopy of tress in the sprawling resort. Avoid lake view rooms that are below level 4 as your view will be blocked by the trees.

The Italian restaurant served very good and authentic Italian food. We had a good wine bottle of Spanish wine at reasonable price. The buffet breakfast was ordinary though.

It is a wonderful hotel for holiday in Hangzhou but maybe a bit far for business as its away from the CBD.

Quiet and very near west lake

If u like to live in a quiet area but in the central and near \"West Lake\", I highly recomman to you.

1)Room is clean But room design is old. But hotel stuff told me that they will re-design the room in next year.

2)Also the taste of spagetti from room services really bad but they charge us one for RMB 140+ !!!

3)When we waited for taxi to airport, a man approached to us weather we need a special taxi from him, I think this is not apporpiate and not acceptable cause the hotel stuff didnt stop him.

4)Anyway,hotel garden is beautiful and big.

Outstanding Hotel

This is an outstanding hotel. In my opinion, the few negative reviews of the hotel on this site are laughably nitpicky -- of \"The Princess and the Pea\" variety. There may be some very, very minor ways in which facilities have not been updated \"to the very latest minute,\" but there is nothing whatsoever to complain about. I'm extremely glad I didn't let the negative reviews sway me, or I would have missed out on a peak experience. This is an incredible 5 Star Hotel with incredible 5 Star amenities and outstanding service (everyone was eager to please and extremely helpful); and its location is second to none in Hangzhou.

This hotel is located right at West Lake. You can walk around all the scenic spots around West Lake very easily.

The hotel is clean, the room is quite large and I' happy with the staff and services as well.

Can't wait to go back!

I received a free upgrade to suite upon check-in. The staff is very nice and the hotel and the room is very nice and clean. Hotel location is the best, located right on the West Lake. On site bike rentel is very convenient. The city of Hangzhou is also very nice and clean. The West Lake area is the best for tourist.

Great hotel with nice grounds and across from Westlake.

The hotel is on a busy street and it can be dangerous to cross Beishan Road due to the two way traffic. The key is a block away there is an underground pedestrian crossing tunnel. Use the tunnel and avoid the stress of crossing this heavily used road. The hotels has relatively good restaurants but close by within walking distances are other privately owned restaurants. One was outstanding. Taxi drivers are friendly in Hangzhou and we did rely on them a lot to travel around. This hotel is next to Westlake but some what far from downtown including the interesting historic district with a very interesting market.

The room was definitely worn out, the couch had scuff marks and staining all over and the other facilities looked very worn.

The bar on the premises was nice and the staff very attentive, but overall not impressed.
