This is a lovely hotel in a historic building. It’s walking distance to all the sights of Stonetown. Our room was clean and comfortable. The balcony looked out to the Indian Ocean. Staff were very helpful and friendly, particularly the receptionist who helped us with booking our transfer to the airport at the end of our stay.

Overpriced for what is on offer. Room wasn’t ready for check-in time and even though we had to wait 1.5 hours to check-in, they would not provide a late checkout when the hotel wasn’t at full capacity. For the room price, you would be better off staying at the much nicer hotel next door.

Lovely property in a quiet corner of Stonetown. Great swimming pool. Historic quality of hotel added a charming feel. Most rooms overlook the ocean. The amenities were complete and the room was very comfortable. Spend a little extra to get an outside balcony or verandah. The staff was wonderful and helpful. There are lots of restaurants nearby. I can't speak for the food at the on property restaurant since I had to leave early and skipped the breakfast. I would definitely stay here again on a Stonetown visit.

The property is in a good location but is extremely tired and old fashioned. They are installing an elevator but this was right next to our room so very noisy works. The entire facilities need a major renovation. The staff were wonderful especially Johannes in the concierge.

My third stay here! I love Zanzibar and love staying here. It's so convenient to everything and the staff are exceptional. Big Joe is always there to welcome us! And Johannes and Suliman also are great. Food is good, view is spectacular, rooms are big and have an \"Old World\" feel. I love it here!

Upon check out I received the bill which had 2 same numbers in it.
When I argued, they cancelled one of them but afterwards, on the way to ferry they called the driver and started asking for more moneys. Even after check out.
Hotel after all is good, most of the staff are friendly. But guys, check the bills and be careful.

I was not offered a room
Upgrade or acknowledged for VIP on Expedia like usual . At check out I asked about bottle of wine and 10 usd credit . They forgot the wine and they usually give a fruit basket instead of 10 dollars credit . I didn’t receive the fruit basket after discussing they agreed to take 10usd off the restaurant bill. I rather be given the options stated when booked then ask for it . Also no elevator . One party member couldn’t use the stairs and this we didn’t realize . We had lunch at hotel and the food was amazing . The staff is not terrible just not aware of what’s going on . Also we booked the same morning for the room why there was confusion maybe . location is good . Property is old . It’s on the beach which is a plus . Breakfast is good . Room was clean and ac worked well .

The Zanzibar Serena Hotel is a gem. The staff is extremely helpful and courteous. They helped us find guides, get to Prison Island, find places to shop for certain items, the list goes on. The room was quiet and very comfortable with a large balcony. The food was excellent. The location is fabulous -- right on the water. Also, we had a late flight out and were able to store our luggage and use the all the amenities of the hotel. We could even shower before leaving! I highly recommend this hotel. I can't imagine finding a better one.

An elegant traditional African hotel with a gorgeous setting right on the Indian Ocean. The views were spectacular with all of the colorful boats passing by. The breakfasts were great. The selection was extensive and well prepared. Our only complaint is that evening dining wasn’t very good, which may have explained why the place was nearly empty at 7:30 pm. Fortunately there are other excellent dining options in the neighborhood.

The hotel location is excellent and within a walking distance from every thing you want to see and visit in stone town. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms are dilapidated and in need of renovation. Bathroom facility are very old. Mattresses have passed their useful service life by years! I booked a room with a sea view. The bathroom in the room I was offered was in a miserable shape. Rusty bathtub and faucet. When I complained to the receptionist, they moved me to a room with renovated shower but no view. I complained again and I was moved the following day to a “better rooms” with a view and partially renovated bathroom.
In a nutshell, this not a 5-star hotel AT ALL. In it’s current condition, should be 2-3 stars max. To be noted that there are no elevators in case of any movement challenge. For the price I paid, I could have gotten a much better deal elsewhere. It was my first time in Zanzibar and next time I know better. I will NOT stay there again.

The staff in Zanzibar Serena Hotel was superb. They were all so very helpful, delightful, and wonderful. I enjoyed the breakfast the most. Each day there were many selections of breads, cereals, fruits, juices, yogurt, and hot foods. There was even an omelet station. The only thing that was a damper during my stay was the mattress in our room. The mattress was firm, but springy. I felt the spring as I slept and when I woke each morning, my back ached.

It is right in Stone town so it was East to walk around town and visit Restuarant in town. It has a beautiful sunset views. The staff were extremely pleasant and helpful. The Swahili decor was nice. The welcome gift basket was very nice.
I was disappointed that it’s private beach was closed. That should be removed from the web site. The mattresses were uncomfortable, bathroom seats broken, chair and stool in room need new cushions and you new new brighter bed covers. So the rooms need some updating.

Maybe because this is not a western based chain staff have no idea about wine or alcoholic beverages. Buffet breakfast was poor & limited after South Africa. Lovely exotic, historic seaside hotel!

Our group of 4 (2 American couples) stayed 4 nights at the Zanzibar Serena in July, 2019, as a follow-up to a Serengeti photo safari. The hotel is right on the Indian Ocean and gorgeous, with loads of character. Our rooms had fabulous ocean views from the rooms themselves and from the spacious lanais, which had very comfortable chairs, tables, and even hammocks! Our rooms were very clean. The food was excellent. A delicious daily buffet breakfast was included in the price. We had breakfast while viewing the sea, watching young people playing soccer on the beach and older people walking & doing yoga. On the weekend, there was a local group performing Zanzibarian music -- clearly much influenced by middle eastern culture and excellent. We had arranged several tours of the area in advance, and added another at the hotel. Lots to see in Stone Town and on the island! There was a nice-looking pool (that we didn't use), and a well-stocked gift shop. We asked for and received a late check-out on our last day. The management was very accommodating. If you want to have dinner on their rooftop restaurant, you'll need to make a reservation in advance. We didn't, and we couldn't get in; but we just walked next door to the Hyatt and had one of our dinners there. We loved the Zanzibar Serena Hotel and highly recommend it.

The fruit juice upon arrival was very welcome. The Serena hotel is a comfortable oasis in the chaos of Stone town. Although there is no elevator, there are first floor rooms if stairs are an issue. It is in Stonetown, and very walkable to most of the town. Yet, it seems like it is fairly private as it has a nice beach and lovely swimming pool. The style of the hotel is authentic and it seems like an old home in Zanzibar. The beach area gets crowded in the late afternoon as many families come out for a swim or to play soccer on the beach.

Definitely not a five star hotel, there are many four stars not far from it, which are much better, toilet is very dated and the toilet seat paint coating is gone

We asked for ground floor because of limited mobility of one of us and the staircase and lack of elevator, despite the request still got a second floor room.
Major complaint was lack of hot water in 2 of 2 booked rooms, water was only lukewarm.

We enjoyed staying at the Serena inn, but, in truth, we have to say that it was not quite the 5 star experience we expected. The room was small, the bathroom tired looking, the pool area was inadequately supervised and lacked parasols, breakfast was adequate but not extensive.

Amazing Experience !! !

From the moment we walked in everything was perfect. All staff are friendly and helpful always waiting to assist you with anything you may need whether it is adventure recommendations or translations. The room was huge and beautifully made up. There was a wraparound balcony with beach views and huge Zanzibar style bed with net--although there were no bugs at all so hakuna matata (no worries) there. The food at the on site restaurants was well seasoned mmm so delicious. I recommend the seafood platter (with lobster, prawns, and calamari mmm) as well as any of the other meals since I'm sure I ate everything.

Overall everything was perfect and I cannot wait to go back to Zanzibar and stay at the Serena and I will definitely stay at a Serena hotel in all of their other locations as I explore the African continent. Thank you so much!

I had a fantastic experience at the Zanzibar Serena Hotel. As a solo female traveler, I wanted lodging where I felt safe and central and the Serena offered both of those things. The rooms were beautifully decorated, the restaurant delicious and the service impeccable. Though slightly more expensive than other options, I utilized their concierge to book activities and tours on the island and was provided with great guides, transportation and interesting insights. I would definitely return to this hotel. My only gripe with the entire stay was that the hotel shuttle I booked didn't show at the airport - I ended up getting a local taxi to take me to the hotel which was much less expensive and just as safe.

The hotel has so much charm ..with dark wood and beautiful typical Stone Town doors. For the most part, everything went smoothly. The cleaning staff were so friendly. The breakfast staff could be a bit friendlier. They always seemed annoyed when entering for breakfast every morning. Stayed for 6 nights.

Beach is not good for swimming. If looking for beach, suggest go far from this area.
Some Staff are super nice, who offered a room upgrade, but others are rude and very nosy, who would not leave you alone, surely looking for tips.

Beautiful, great location, excellent staff

In the tradition of the Serena Hotel, the style fits into the environment. The rooms are beautifully equipped with four poster beds, curtains, tribal carpets. The beach is right in front of the hotel and in a room towards the sea front you hear the waves in the night. A beautiful pool and pool area with sea view gives space for relaxing afternoons. The best quality of the hotel is the staff. A very friendly and professional team. We arrived late, for example, and I needed help with an issue at a local bank. All was no problem and handled perfectly.

Great location. Expensive.

We were only here for one night. Our room was very expensive, but it had an amazing view and the location could not have been better. Good place to stay for one night to be close to the airport or wander around Stone Town.
We tried to have dinner at the terrace restaurant outdoors and there were bugs hopping all over the place. It was so distracting that we decided to leave. When we told one of the employees about the bugs, he said \"they do not bite.\" We left and had an amazing dinner at the hotel across the street for half the price and no bugs.
Also, we booked a taxi to the airport when we checked in and when we tried to leave, it had not been arranged for us. The hotel fixed the problem, but an expensive hotel should be on top of those things.

One of the best hotels I have stayed in.

I have stayed in many first class hotels around the world and the Serena is the best. Warm welcome staff who went above and beyond to make my stay exceptional. Beautiful hotel in a Great location. I highly recommend the Serene and can not wait to return.

Best coffee in Zanzibar

It poured with rain in Zanzibar and we got drenched. The staff was solitious and very kind to two little old ladies.
