The property was very overpriced for a basic room above a hotel. There was no air conditioning (on a typical summer day, so pretty uncomfortable), no TV in the room (one in the other room), no hair dryer and a flickering bathroom light.

Relaxing stay at a great location

We had a lovely long-weekend stay at Holgate. The rooms were clean, comfortable and reasonably spacious. There was also a lot of natural light and fresh air that came through the windows. Were our room was specifically we good hear some noise every 10-15mins, however it really just felt like white noise and wasn't a big deal.
The restaurant downstairs has great quality standard pub food, the beer is what stands out and cannot be faulted. Very convenient location, walking distance to everything in town including parks, Coles and the bakery.

It was a beautiful period building and room with high ceilings and character. The room was clean and the staff were terrific. The bed was VERY firm and their was a loud vibration noise for approximately 5 minutes every 15-20 minutes through out the night. Also the only cooling in the room was a ceiling fan, it wasn't an overly hot night (10 degrees outside) but we found the room quiet warm and could be very warm on a hotter night.

My partner and I really liked staying at the Holgate Brew House for the weekend. Woodend is beautiful. We thought the staff were friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the beer and we tried them all. Thanks to James and Nick for the great service. We celebrated my partner’s birthday in the new addition behind the micro brewery. Everyone enjoyed the get together and drank the unique and tasty beers and ate the delicious snack food. We will be back!

Holgate Woodend - Great place to stay !

Spent 2 nights here. Staff were great, friendly. The room was old pub style, done up a few years back, a bit of paint cracking around skirts and doors, but that adds to the charm of this type of accommodation (like the small squeak on the staircase as you walk up - lol). We ate here as well - food was great (some may say a bit slow, but we were not in a hurry). Breakfast was included (was some basic breakfast items left in the room for you to look after yourself). If you wanted a hot breakfast, maybe that is available (didn't need it), but a few cafe's around that you could go to for that as well. The rooms don't have AC, but have tall ceilings, and a ceiling fan, it was 25 to 28 deg both days, didn't feel the need for AC either day or night. The rooms are upstairs, so open a window, let the breeze in if you like. The location was perfect - right in the middle of town basically. They have an onsite Brewhouse as well, so you can try some of their beers too ! Woodend is not a big town, so you can walk to everything ... enough shops to keep us happy. Day trip out we went to Kyneton ~ lunch at SOFO (Social Foundry) ... great food ! ... winery stop at Hanging Rock (have to do that !). All in all a great place to stay for a night (or in our case 2).

The food was fantastic. Very welcoming and accommodating staff. Our only downside was the lumpy pillows! Im not sure if they've been through the washing machine but they were very uncomfortable. I'd suggest the hotel invest in new pillows and then I'd happily give them a top star rating on everything!

they've renovated the original rooms and restored it back to it's former glory however.....every 15minutes (and we timed it) the whole room would vibrate and a constant bass sound would be heard from the brewery. This went on 24/7 and made it difficult to sleep if you were in rooms 1 and 2. The mattress was rock hard and the pillows have seen better days which saw us wake up extremely sore over our two night stay

This place has a great location right on the main street and a vibrant pub with good food. The room and bathroom were large and comfortable. My only complaint is that the bathroom smelled quite musty, but it disappeared after opening the windows and closing the bathroom door.

Lovely lady cleaning the hotel was so helpful. We expected a hotel to be noisy but something banging in the wind all night stopped us sleeping. Hopefully a discussion we had with staff will get it fixed.

The only hotel in town near to rail.

Very comfortable for sleeping, bathing. The linen was excellent and in good supply. What was missing was a hairdryer from the bathroom. The clothing/blanket rack was perfect for travellers to unload and get organised. The staff were very busy but responsive. The experience overall was not equal to the cost of accommodation.

I was pleasantly surprised, the room was big and warm as it was winter and I had a great view looking down the main street of Woodend. Plentiful continental breakfast on the Saturday morning and nice hot breakfast on Sunday with plenty of choice. Friendly and helpful staff. Well done!

Very over-priced, have stayed many other places much better quality for less. Mould in shower, obviously renovated at some point but not properly. Windows did not seal, we were kept awake all night by a poorly fixed awning that banged against the outside of our room all night. 'Continental breakfast' included bread slices in a plastic bag and half a jar of stale ground coffee. The brewery was fine however we would not stay again and would not recommend.

Friendly staff and great pub, however the room was quite expensive for what it was. Very sparse. Dishes were not clean and not being able to get a late checkout was disappointing. Doors are on very tight springs and slam loudly when people come and go.

Was a nice hotel - being rundown

The Holgate is an old hotel with the beautiful wooden floors and old fashioned hotel rooms. We had stayed there 9 years ago and enjoyed it.

Our room was neat but very warm - no air-conditioning (which can be a good thing regarding an authentic feel for the past).
However, the window sashes were broken (the bathroom window had a bolt to hold it open), the bath was dirty (we went to Coles to get bath cleaner).

The dining room breakfast was disgraceful - the worst breakfast we have had. Inedible. The staff seemed to think that it was funny that we did not finish eating our meals (we had a few mouthfuls - dry, no butter on the toast with poached eggs, and a 30 minute wait). My complaint to the 'manager' brought faux sympathy. Such as shame that the Holgate is spending up big on new restaurant/bar next to its brewery, but is letting the accommodation rundown. They obviously don't care - too much money in the brewery. One has to wonder about the quality of the beer as time goes by.

We have stayed at many hotels both within Australia and overseas - the Holgate gets the winning vote for \"the management and staff really don't care about the hotel guests\"

Spacious and Quiet

On the positive side: spacious with comfortable bedding. Quiet. Pub restaurant with average quality meals situated conveniently downstairs. Friendly staff. Clean linen and bedding.
On the negative side: some mould on bathroom window frame, bath clean but could do with a proper scrubbing. Some hairs of previous occupant left in bath. No hairdryer. No tissues.
Very expensive compared to hotels of better calibre.

A fully renovated country pub with great food, service and staff. Highly recommended, the rooms are comfortable with plenty of space and high ceilings. There was great live music on Friday night and the food and menu are fantastic.

Holgate Brewhiuse offers old world charm with. 21st century facilites. Rooms were spacious and comfortable and only minutes walk to all woodend has to offer. Whisky I don't eat at the pic, the memo liked great, you could even go downstairs and watch the Brewers at work. Definetley going to stay there again.
