Me and my wife stayed there for our honeymoon. We had an exceptional time. The service was exceptional. The pools and amenities were very nice. Great! Breakfast was just free. Located close to montel Chino and many great wineries. Specifically, we really enjoyed the wine tasting. The entire staff were great but here were some standouts , We were helped by Kristian who made us feel extremely welcomed and Morris who performed our wine tasting and he was an exceptional.
Strong recommendation, great value.

First of all the views are to die for. Few issues I had and I’m going to keep it short, bath would not drain, we asked for maintenance to come out but after two attempts nothing was improved. Make sure to make reservations, even with a half board they had issues accommodating us. We found bugs in our room which was report to the staff. Overall we will not be returning. The staff is nice but no accommodation was made for my stay with these issues it was easier for me just to pay my tab and leave.

Our second stay at CDV. Such a special place in Tuscany. The hotel has made many improvements since our last stay, and has nothing but 5 star amenities, the friendliest staff, and the incredible castle hotel with views of the Tuscan countryside. This is world class luxury. The spa is in a league of its own, the restaurant and chefs are making top quality cuisine. I can not wait to come back!

My review starts with hesitation,but it's important for potential guests. Despite its beautiful appearance, this resort disappoints. It's labeled as 5 stars, but falls far short, lacking in both quality and service.Staff struggle with English, rooms are outdated and unclean,with moldy carpets and worn-out towels.Basic amenities like coffee and water are not provided.Comparing it to other 5star properties in Tuscany, it's a huge letdown.Even the dining experience was subpar,with overcooked pasta and poorly prepared duck. Watching their failed attempt to cook the duck was like witnessing a culinary disaster movie.Our waiter, in a misguided attempt to be friendly, veered into awkward oversharing territory. And to add insult to injury, Marcelo charged us an arm and a leg for a couple of drinks. My gripe wasn't just about the hefty bill, but the blatant lack of respect.It felt like they were trying to milk us dry with those jaw-dropping charges. Skipping ahead to the next day, we decided to brave breakfast in the dining area.Sadly, the only thing worth swallowing was the coffee.That evening, we ventured into Montalcino for dinner—I just couldn't stomach another night of Italy's most lackluster cuisine. Fast forward to check-out:I learned my lesson dealing with their greedy, incompetent management.When I requested a copy of the bill before paying, they had the audacity to tack on an extra €800 charge, leaving the concierge clueless.I paid 2000E for 2 nights and coulnt wait to leave

Amazing place and location. Breathtaking views, beautiful outdoor and indoor pools with thermal water, luxurious spa. Wonderful restaurant with the best Tuscan specialties, second to none wine list. Beautiful room with own private garden, entire property and gardens impeccably maintained, peaceful surroundings typical of the Tuscany hills. The best wineries of the famous Brunello all within a 15-minute drive, Siena, San Gimignano and other historic places reachable in an hour or less. A truly unforgettable experience.

The property is lovely, but the live music with dinner was ill suited to the atmosphere and the patrons were few on the ground.

The low headcount makes an interesting selection of items for dinner difficult for the kitchen. Indeed the buffet breakfast was not available every day, again--it seems to me--due to the number of patrons at the hotels during my stay.

Honeymoon trip. I liked it more than my husband but we look for different things. He was very disappointed with the bedrooms. Not much space. It felt like we were sleeping in the same room as the bathroom. But the view from the bedroom was spectacular. The pools were absolutely gorgeous.

The spa doesn’t open until noon. And the sauna was never hot. We would have liked to go earlier.

One thing to note: if you book on Expedia the spa (saunas, steam room, salt bath) is not included when otherwise it is. The staff told us it was included and then at checkout they tried to charge us $50/each per day we used it. So just fyi- it is not free.

The food at the restaurant is great for breakfast but not worthy the money for dinner. You will pay $160 for a steak that feeds 3 people (no option for less) and it will be the most mediocre steak of your life. It will be unforgettable since you’ll regret the choice! Better off eating dinner in Montalcino.

We opened the door to the terrace which is beautiful but there were mosquitos and ants in the bed that I was not able to sleep well for two nights.

This hotel should be avoided due to its terrible customer service.

The hotel twice abruptly cancelled my travel plans- once in 2020 (completely understandable) and again with one week’s notice in 2021 (unacceptable). Making travel plans to visit Italy from the United States is an involved process and this hotel caused significant disruption in 2021.

A sign of a great hotel is how the staff works with guests to resolve these types of disruptions. We have been asking for a refund for the stay or a credit for the stay to be used through June 2022 (we can’t just fly to Italy whenever we want) for the past three weeks and the hotel refuses to make reasonable restitution. Expedia needs to step in and help settle this issue.

This hotel should be avoided- poor customer service on the basics is often an indication of poor customer service in the more important areas of the guest experience. DO NOT BOOK THIS HOTEL!

Very disappointed. The hotel is very very overpriced. Do not stay at the suite that has the private pool. The hotel uses a grill meters away. My wife and I weren't able to use the private pool from 11am to 2:30pm because of the smoke from the grill. Management sent us a bottle of wine to compensate for the inconvenience. Absurd! Then they offered a voucher for €200 and the €500 to be used at hotel restaurant. Even more ridiculous... a €500 meal. Ok if you want to spend on their overpriced wine. Next morning the noise of furniture being moved in the room upstairs woke us. We had to complain 3 times before the noise stopped. In a nutshell, you are way better off staying at Castiglion del Bosco a short distance away. I was also very disappointed with hotel dot com because they didn't want to compensate me for the terrible experience. Over the last 24 months I have made +50 reservations.

Worst room, worst service, don't get fooled!

I was so excited about this hotel, first of all for the pictures, and second of all because Montalcino was one of the highlights of our anniversary trip.
This hotel is pretty from the outside, and the pool and common areas are really nice... but the service and attention are the WORST, and the room is the worst I've ever been to.
First of all, when you arrive there's no one to help you with your luggage, you have to find the reception yourself because is kind of a maze.
Then the \"king bed\" are two hard as rock individual beds put together as one... what is this a joke?
Then the sheets burnt our skin, literally, the material was so cheap and they were so rough that literally we got our skin burned.
The breakfast is included, and when I asked the guy for some sunny side up eggs, he told me that that will cost me extra, even they charged us a bottle of water of 12 euros! I mean I live in NYC and I've never had a 12 euros bottle of water. The staff from the restaurant was super rude, and they took forever.
At the checkout, I told the receptionist about the sheet incident, and she told me: \"Ah ok\" not even I'm sorry or something, and the language was not a barrier because I speak perfect italian.
So bottom line I DON'T RECOMMEND this hotel at all, there are a lot of options in Montalcino to stay.

The only issue is the overpriced food in the restaurant . I understand that in a hotel like this you are expect to pay high prices for the food. In this case the quality is not there. The service was good but the food taste and quality were below standard for a place like this . I recommend this hotel but eat outside.

The property was beautiful. But, the water was poorly treated and almost everyone there was breaking out in rashes. I had a doctor treat my boyfriend and I and immediately asked us if we had been in any body of treated water/ hot tub. He automatically recognized the rash and it took days to go away.

Our rooms were nice but the shower kept flooding on us. There was an enormous build up of ants by our door to our room as well.

The food was insanely priced. We had the most expensive fish that we will probably have in our lives at the resort. We expected it to be pricey, but our dinner cost more than our room.

The resort is definitely beautiful, but the experience was not great.

This was a bit of a splurge for us but it was worth it. We had a 2 bedroom suite. The room was great. Really big and clean. They have at least 3 pools fed by a thermal spring so the water is really warm. The view from the hotel/castle was beautiful. I highly recommend it.

We were offered wine at check-in. While at dinner we asked to purchase the same bottle of wine and none of the staff members knew what wine I was talking about. The sommelier brought us a bottle and charged us 100 euros for a completely different wine. The general manager stands in the dining staring at every single table, it was quite just a weird vibe. We asked for a private car to be arranged to go to the next town which is only about a seven minute drive and we were charged 80 euros each way. And by the way the front desk clerk never arranged the car and was off the next day. So, we ended up eating in the hotel again. If you ask for help with tours the desk clerks will only offer tours on their own property and no options outside of their hotel. After insisting they finally shared a tour book of other options. We missed our train prior to arrival so we had to change the pick up time with the hotel so Cristian charged us an additional 20% to the pick up charge. The bathroom had urine stains around the toilet floors. Other than that the room was pretty clean. The only pleasant person in the hotel was Katia a waitress during breakfast. The spa area is very slippery. My daughter fell as she walked from the locker room to the spa. There are no rubber mats anywhere for spa users to wipe their feet. I would recommend that you book your excursions and rent a car if you stay here. Or else you will pay more on transportation than the room rate.

The place is beautiful, although I've been to other Tuscan hotels that have just as nice of a view for half the price. The thermal pool is amazing, however we found out about most of the hotel's common areas on our own, as not much information was provided when we arrived. Unfortunately our room wasn't ready at the 3pm check-in. We waited until nearly 5pm which took away a few extra hours we could have used to relax. The food at the hotel is about 3 to 4 times more expensive than what you will find in town, which is 15 mins away, and it's unfortunate because you could enjoy the pool more if you could get food or drinks at a reasonable price. We found an old cigar casing in the back yard patio, but the inside of the room was beautiful and clean. In summary you pay a premium price for the thermal pool with a great view and a nice room. Although, every other hotel we stayed in had tea and a water boiler and this one did not. Also we were surprised at how noisy the hallway was. You could hear everything from inside the room.

We loved Castello di Velona! The complimentary champagne during check-in was a really nice touch. We stayed in the Terrace Suite with the private pool. The suite was absolutely fabulous, well appointed and very clean. The private pool terrace was truly something special. The views are phenomenal and the private hot springs pool really sets off the vibe. After checking in a getting situated we opted for a poolside meal at the Dolce Vita Pool Restaurant. The service was exceptional and we thoroughly enjoyed our fresh cold press juice and seafood salad. After spending a few hours driving through the local roads we came back and relaxed in the hot springs during sunset. The poolside service was great. We sipped champagne and had fresh fruit while we soaked in the magical sunset. Later that night we had dinner at Settimo Senso Restaurant. Again, the service was truly exceptional and the food was cooked to perfection. With dinner, we enjoyed a bottle of 2010 Brunello Di Montalcino. Magnifico! We really enjoyed our stay at Castello di Velona!

This hotel has an amazing view! It is an excellent place to relax, the thermal pools are a fun way to spend the day. We were there for three nights, I would say 1 or 2 are more than enough. The food is average, and very expensive. The valet services is an extra charge. The rooms are spacious and clean, the bed is ok. We headed down to the town of Montalcino for dinner, and it was much better!

Set on top of a beautiful hill this hotel exceeded all our expectations. The staff was accommodating and the sunrise and sunset views were amazing. Breakfast was delicious and the wine choices thoughout the day were fantastic. The sommelier, Marcella is passionate and engaging. We could have listened to her for hours. If I had one suggestion it would be that water would be provided pool side free of charge.

VERY overrated - not worth the money, even on sale

This hotel is in the middle of no where (yes, we knew this when we booked). However, when we checked in, we were informed that the hotel restaurant is very small so they were completely booked until 9.30 pm. The only other option was to get a car service into town - which is only 15 minutes, but we were told by another traveller that they were charged 150 euros for the return transfer. We took the 9.30 booking but were very disappointed when we showed up and they still didn't have a table ready, so we had to wait a further 20 minutes. We weren't offered a drinks menu to order something to drink, the food was very, very average (would not eat there again) and the room was awful. It was very old and musty with the only window overlooking the outdoor gym equipment. The staff were very friendly but the hotel does NOT live up to the photos or price expectation.

The setting is unparalleled. We found the staff to be as nice and as accommodating as any high end property we have stayed at. Having traveled to Tuscany a few times I would suggest never going anywhere in Tuscany without a car. Driving is very safe and there is so much variety in and around wherever one stays that being able to explore will bring out the best in Toscana. I have read other reviews of Castello di Velona and the overriding complaint is the price of everything at the hotel is egregious. I agree. People who can afford a place like this did not accumulate those funds by being stupid with their money. Velona prices most things so that one feels foolish in spending such an amount. Great food can be had almost anywhere in the area at reasonable prices so Velona is just driving there guests away. That said, the food is excellent, especially the complimentary breakfast that has an immense variety as well as the freshest and most delicious local fruits and vegetables. You can sit on the terrace and enjoy your breakfast and cappuccino with the most spectacular view of the countryside. We would sit for 1 1/2 hours to had the most relaxing start to our day.

I would suggest to the ownership to consider pricing meals and extras at the hotel more reasonably, especially the wine. There is great wine all over Montalcino for cheap so Velona's pricing is driving away business

In conclusion, it is a very good property with the potential to be great. If you love sunsets....

Idyllic Luxury Tuscan Retreat

Castello di Velona is a gorgeous property located high on a hill in some of the most beautiful land in Tuscan wine country. You definitely feel as though you are being transported to a different time and place when you drive through the countryside and arrive at the Castello. The staff is lovely and the breakfast they provide is huge and delicious. The spa and pool area is one of the best and you can spend the day laying by the pool and taking in the breathtaking views. We stayed in a Sunset room which surely lived up to its name with daily views of the beautiful Tuscan sunsets. Make no mistake this is surely a luxury resort and the prices in their various restaurants very much reflect this which is perhaps my only quibble with this property. I recommend enjoying one meal there but you can find similarly delicious foods at much more reasonable prices in the nearby villages which I also recommend exploring. Overall we had a very nice stay at Castello di Velona and if you are looking for a quiet, remote retreat with amazing views it is certainly worth considering.

First thing I want to say is that the pool is amazing. By far, the best thing about this hotel. The water comes from nearby hot springs, it is warm and refreshing at the same time. The service at the hotel could be greatly improved. We purchased the full board package and there were a number of time last the staff didn’t seem to know what was included. The few times we ordered food, our order was wrong. The wine and drinks, which are separate from the full board, were very expensive, but that’s to be expected at a resort in Montalcino. The views from the property are spectacular. We didn’t explore the nearby region too much, although we went to a nearby winery for a tasting which was very private and beautiful. All in all, it was a great stay.

Beautiful hotel and location

This place is beautiful and the location is stunning. The nightly rate was well worth the stay.

A word of caution though: once you’re at the hotel the services cost a fortune. The nightly rate was great for the hotel, but drinks, dinner, day trips are out of this world expensive.

I recommend this place but bring your our drinks for pool side and venture into town for meals.

This property is beautiful and with the indoor and outdoor pools it was certainly a destination and highlight of our trip in Italy. The Gourmet restaurant was extraordinary. It was our anniversary dinner for sure. I would highly recommend the special place

Beautiful castle disappointing service

The castle hotel is beautiful, staff is not prepared to serve guests expecting 5 star service. Restuarant is completely overpriced with a too complicated menu. They should try simplier food with alternatives.

Overated hotel- not a five star avery disappointed

My wife and i stayed at this hotel recently. It looked really nice on the website - a five star castle/ spa- with five star pricing. We arrived at about 4 pm. We were given a tour of the pool facility and room. The hotel staes it has thermal water poolsbut we were unable to use. we booked a room that had a thermal water tub. We were assigned a room three stories down and were informed elevator was not working.. My wife has a bad knee injury and when we asked for a room close to the lobby the person just shrugged his shoulders.. we could not use the pool or the facility because of our location. The tub with the thermal water was made of marble and had mold around the faucet and drain mechanism. Very uncomfortable to sit in or get into it. Water was rusty. Overall my feeling is tha this is a three star property masquerating as a five star.. very disappointed..

Paradise in Tuscany

Though a bit hard to find this place is magical! It had the best views in all of the area. The staff was incredible! They were so friendly and accommodating it was hard to leave. The pool and thermal spa is spectacular! With stunning views you find yourself in total relaxation in paradise. We had a massage which was wonderful. The food is first class. We travel extensively and have many places to still go. That being said we would come back to this beautiful castle!

Beautiful but frustrating

Only hotel I've ever stayed in that charges a flat rate for room service. And it's expensive. I was shocked because it's a slap in the face. As for the fine dining restaurant, worst meal we had in Italy. I wanted so much to like it but alas there was no way. Much better restaurants in town. Views are gorgeous and staff is friendly but at times slow.

What a great place to relax

Spent a long weekend there with my husband, very quiet and relaxing place! We had family suite room- excellent! It was the best pillows and duvet I ever seen in hotel, the quality of the textile in amazing.
Food was great ( although the portions are not very big, but enough to feel full), the stuff is very friendly and helpful.
After London busy life this place was total relax. SPA facilities are fantastic, pools are hot, massage was very relaxing, I was a bit disappointed after my manicure - the cost is 50 Euro, very nice lady just pretended she done something to my nails)))

World-class view, everything else close to perfect

We spent 3 nights at Castello di Velona in late April 2016. The castle is very high up a mountain about 30 minutes' drive outside Montalcino. We stayed in a tower room.

The complimentary breakfast spread is excellent and there are made-to-order dishes for a fee. The lunch options were limited but tasty. I found the prices for food to be very high and portions small.

The room itself was not as large as the pictures suggested, but it was still very nice. I was disappointed that the best vistas of the valley were visible from the sitting room rather than the bedroom. I was also disappointed that our combination bathtub/shower had a major drainage problem. These are not awful issues, but I expect more when paying these prices.

My wife enjoyed the spa, although the final pricing was a good bit higher than the fee schedule we were sent in advance. The access to the spa amenities was much appreciated. The spring-fed pools were not as warm as expected but still refreshing.

My biggest disappointment was in the staff's response to minor requests. Our room did not have a room service menu, and after requesting it and waiting an hour, we had to call down to remind them. The same thing happened with the hair drier that was broken. Request, wait an hour, then remind them. The staff is very friendly, but lacked organization.

In all, the view alone is almost worth the cost per night. It is stunning. Everything else is very nice. I would recommend this to a friend.

Be treated like a King and queen in the castle

Magical experience in a location that is unimaginably beautiful. We appreciated the care of a staff that took an interest in our happiness and a kitchen that was truly an experience in great fine dining with local specialties that were fantastic. Facilities that more than exceeded our expectations were the topping on this incredibly perfect castle.

Castello di Velona is a beautiful hotel in the wine country. We stayed in the family suite which was perfect for what we needed--very large, great beds and bathrooms. The things I liked about the hotel were the hotel bar (nice atmosphere and good bar menu), the spa amenities--pool, steam rooms, etc. And the views are amazing! We had dinner in the Gourmet restaurant which was not good. The food was very mediocre and the room had no ambience. The hotel reception staff was excellent, especially our bellman. Granted we were there for just one night, my overall impression was the atmosphere/vibe of the hotel was not warm and inviting.

Amazing stay!

My wife and I stayed here for our honeymoon and were blown away! It's in a very remote area with the most amazing views I've ever seen. The castle is very clean and modern, staff is incredibly helpful and friendly and the food/wine is excellent. The thermal pools were great and heated which is good since it was October and a bit chilly. The entire stay was just incredibly relaxing and enjoyable and I highly recommend.

Outstanding hotel among the vineyards

We spent 4 days at the Castelli di Velona. Our room (a suite in the old part of the hotel) was perfect - a good size bedroom and sitting room and well equipped bathroom - all done in a traditional style in keeping with the castle. The pool area was also excellent. Our only suggestions for improvement would be to the gym (too small to really call a gym - only two pieces of equipment) and the lack of any tea / coffee facilities in the room. But by far the best thing about the hotel was the staff - everyone was so welcoming and helpful - without being over-attentive. Overall a great (though justifiably expensive) hotel and well worth a visit - particularly for lovers of the famous Brunello wine.

Disappointing

The hotel wasn't clean dusty night tables and the AC wasn't sufficient. The hotel staff was nice but they were under staffed to truly provide a 5 star experience. Also, the gym was essentially nothing more then an elliptical and a bike in a room that was 5x5 feet without proper air ventilation. However the views and the pool area were fantastic.

Great hotel however our stay was somehow spoiled by the fact that the staff promised to give us a special surprise given it was our honeymoon (e.g. Bottle of prosecco, specially decorated room, chocolates or something like that) and never did. My husband specifically requested for this twice over email before our arrival as he was happy to pay for it himself and the hotel confirmed they would give us a little treat to make our stay feel extra special. However when we arrived they had nothing planned. We spoke w the staff the next morning and they said that they couldn't do it on our arrival night as we arrived late night but they would 'surprise' us on that night. And again, nothing happened that 2nd night. The next morning on our check out I raised this issue with the reception staff as constructive feedback for them and all they said was \"we apologize for that\".
So, as I said, the hotel is very nice, has a beautiful view, great spa facilities and great breakfast buffet, however you wouldn't expect these issues to happen in a hotel of this category.

We then stayed in other castellos in the area w equally beautiful facilities but staff 100% more dedicated to made us feel like special guests.
