The motel rooms on the ground floor were sufficiently shield by the hotel building so we heard no traffic noise.

The beds were comfortuable and we slept well. It has a microwave, toaster and fridge with the makings for breakfast at hand.

One minor downside is that there is no formal office. So. you need to call someone to check-in to your room. Similarly on checkout, you just leave the keys in your room and shut the door.

Disappointed and Misled by reviews.

How any body could suggest this property is Exceptional and score it 10 out of 10 is beyond me any score more than 3 out of 10 would be generous. The decor is aged, cleanliness marginal, plumbing leak in toilet lack of soap holder in shower area, just a few of the issues. On arrival on a 38C day the reception was un attended and the key had been left under the door mat for us when we opened the door to the room it was like walking into an oven. Management had not seen fit to turn on air conditioning.
At $150 way over priced.
On plus side room and bath room generous size bed linen and bath towels clean.

First looks can be deceiving but on opening the door to our room we were pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere of the area. Decent size bathroom, bedroom, breakfast bar area and verandah for relaxation.
Breakfast was provided, two choices of cereal, toast and fresh fruit.

It was smallish room but so cute and the peaked ceiling gives a big sense of space. Little patio out back was a lovely place for morning coffee. For such a reasonably priced room we were pleasantly surprised and really enjoyed our stay there.

The room was clean and tidy and provided almost all we needed for a few days, a place to sleep. Bed was comfortable, breakfast was sufficient. Staff were friendly and helpful. Parking for room 7 is a bit tight.
For a motel stay, it was very good.

Although old and in need of paint and car park a bit small the rooms were clean and bright Fresh fruit in fridge. Bread jam and Large amount of Breakfast cerals Muslie and Cornflakes and heaps of milk. Don't get this everywhere. And the staff and owner were so helpful with parking and when my friend became ill they helped and waited for the ambulance Just such service you don't get these days. Forget that' the appearance on the outside is old.ther rooms inside were great.

Parking is a very big problem here, if you are lucky you might get 3 cars in the car park, 4 at a pinch, it is not allocated just a free for all including day staff, this represents a huge first world problem for one or two cantankerous guests who are incapable of walking an extra foot or so to their door and like to tailor make their stay beyond other guests, plus a staff member who likes to leave silly notes on cars and knocks on doors asking people to move them. Who allows their staff to bother the guests? I gave the motel owner the note and the excuses and lies just poured out. He was incapable of dealing with this and his lack of professionalism and experience showed. We found him to be very petulant and whiney, it is logistically impossible to park every guest’s car in the car park if the motel is full, who has ever heard of a motel with no parking! Later on in the week he denigrated me over this because he still had not dealt with the matter. I am not going to write what he said here because I simply cannot stoop to that level and I really cannot be bothered to recount the abuse from some silly irrelevant and petulant man.
We had gone through Wotif/Expedia for this booking, which makes us their customer and not the motel owners. After recounting the whole weeks scenario to them they gave us a very sizeable refund for the trouble I had suffered and were pretty shocked at the abuse I got. I must mention how professional I thought they were in dealing with this fi

Nice but needs update

I stayed here two nights and can say that the rooms have potential but need a bit of TLC. The price is reasonable and the rooms spacious and quiet (so long as the fridge in the room going on and off at regular intervals doesn't bother you).
Personally even with the reverse air con, I was cold as there was no electric blanket and both nights were only a few degrees above freezing. I did find a spare blanket in the cupboard (not super clean just okay) but I hate getting into a cold bed!
I've stayed in quite a few motels in Victoria and would class this as average with the potential to be excellent.
I hope that they fix the lock of my room as it was exceedingly difficult to open and to lock securely. The shower dripped incessantly too. But all these small details could be updated. The trouble is that once the owners/managers let one thing go, then another and another, the place quickly becomes run down.
I wasn't confident in the cleanliness of the doona cover either as it was dark brown and black, crisp white is much more luxurious and looks clean (so long as it is, of course).
I would rate this motel as good but could be more with just a few improvements.
On Saturday there is an excellent local artisan and food market right opposite the motel, well worth a visit. Castlemaine has so many interesting galleries, artisan shops, cafes and walks, it makes it easy to enjoy the weekend.

No receptionist, a phone number on the door. Called phone no: told room number, key in door. Trouble turning heating on. Call again. Came to motel to help. Shower goes from ultra hot to cold. Turn off wait and repeat hot to cold. Not pleasant in mid winter. Rated Staff a 3 because the manager was not on site, she did ring the owner overseas for help.

We had a lovely overnight stay at the Albion. Check in was quick and easy and we were pleasantly surprised that the room was much nicer and bigger than it looked in the photos. We had a wonderful dinner at the hotel after a pre-dinner drink during Happy Hour in the Bar. The menu in the restuarant is quite small but large enough to offer a good variety of obviously freshly cooked meals. The friendly waitress (who also the obviously effient cleaner) was able to help us choose a very spicy meal and a very flavoursome one. The Goan Fish Curry and the Greek Lamb Cutlets were beautifully presented and so good. The wine list featured many local wines by the glass. The included continental breakfast was in the fridge when we arrived and was adequate to start the day. The plate of fresh fruit was a welcome touch. Would certainly return if we are in the area again.

An unpleasant motel to end our trip. The room has the unwashed duvet & mattress protector that youth hostels have. The guest laundry is also a bit of a joke. The machine is ancient and you are left to work it yourself as the owner is serving already drunk locals at the on site bar. Eventually it only works with cold water so didn’t get a proper wash, plus it took well over 45 minutes to start as it kept stopping. I did not pay for that privilege.
The rooms are also not serviced properly. We came back to the bin emptied and the duvet literally just pulled up. I also had something stolen that I badly needed that I assume was thought of as trash. It wasn’t in or near the bin and was neatly on a shelf.
We also had a large cockroach that I stamped on in the morning which was left in the middle of the floor to be removed. It wasn’t. Unbelievable.
There is a small verandah behind the room which was unusable due to the smoke from neighbouring rooms so we were shut in the room all the time. A lady next door told me that dogs from another room were running along the verandas & into her room. I’m terrified of dogs and luckily they had checked out but this also is totally unacceptable.

The room was clean enough but needed a thorough spring cleaning and some maintenance. I had two daddy long legs above my bed and a huntsman in the bathroom. Someone else's toothbrush was left stuck to the bathroom mirror and the towels needed a good bleach bath. The reception was unmanned when I arrived which was fine as I received a text explaining this.
The bed was very comfy and sheets were clean. The room was comfortable and had split system and ceiling fan.
It could be a great little place with some maintenance/updating but it was okay for a while quick overnight stay.

This was my second stay at the Albion so that in itself says a lot. I stayed in the wattle room which was kitted out in yellow as its theme. I was given a text message about arrangements for my room as the manager is not always on sight. The room itself was clean and tidy with self catering facilities and television. I didn't need anything more than this.
The staff at the bar were very welcoming and friendly and the food in the bistro was fabulous.

Very comfortable stay. Great beds and pillows! The hotel food is amazing, we dined in and had room service too. Friendly owner, very clean except for the fridge. Good amenities. Unfortunately the shower in the grape room was unusable. After 10 minutes of trying to adjust the temperature I gave up. It was either freezing or boiling. I ended up using the sink to wash. Id stay again if the shower is fixed but I'll definitely return to the hotel for lunch of dinner!

The Albion was a perfect selection for us - great value, newly refurbished, very clean, strong heater (important in chilly Castemaine), nice outlook, and good sized bathroom newly fitted out and sparkling. Great location opposite the Saturday market, and goldfields walk behind.
Only 1 suggestion for improvement - an extra blanket for the chilly nights would have made it even more cosy

The owners of the hotel were very nice, and overall we enjoyed our stay. The room was nice, but the previous occupants had left some rubbish in the room that hadn't been removed on cleaning.The rooms are not well soundproofed - the occupants of the room next door had a grumpy child who kept us awake for much of the night. This was largely bad luck, but we could hear every word the child said through the wall. The wifi also didn't work for most of the weekend, though I understand that the manager was having this fixed on Monday when the company he uses for technical support would be open again.

Great hotel. It's the little things that made all the difference - enclosed balcony, salt & pepper shakers, real hand soap in the bathroom. This hotel is just out of the centre of town, but just a short drive of a few minutes into the centre. Would gladly stay here again. Note for Vodafone users: Castlemaine is a reception black spot, so make sure you get the free wifi password!

Disappointing, it has lost its sparkle

This is our second stay at this hotel. Our first experience was very positive. However with the change of ownership there has been an apparent change in approach.

My two dealings on the phone were less than friendly.

The main room and bathroom were not very clean. (Towels and linen were fresh.) Floors needed a good clean. Shower not well scrubbed. Toilet dusty.

To make a cup of tea we had to scrub the cups. Tea bags and coffee were not in individual sachets.
No biscuits available. No option for breakfast.

The tube of shampoo in the bathroom was half used.

When I rang the day before, I was told the hotel restaurant was closed. On arrival I was told it would be opened!

There were no food places within close walking distance - hotel not open. Very glad I had a car. Almost went with public transport up to Castlemaine, but glad I didn't when I got there and saw how far the Albion was from town. Noisy other guests (?) meant I had 2 out of 3 disturbed nights sleep - thin walls. Never saw any staff, though managed to get someone on a mobile phone.

When we arrived I had to ask for the shower to be cleaned as there was mold and dirt in the corners of the bathroom. They immediately moved me to another room, but it wasn't much better. There were coffee stains on the electric blanket control and on the side tables and mold on the shower.

Stark difference from a year ago.

We had visited this place about a year ago. This time around the reception was below average. The door bell at the reception did not work. The reception desk is non existent and so they listed a number to call. We called twice and checked the number but the number was either listed incorrectly or not in service. We did not get through. There were a few other numbers listed and luckily we were able to get through to one of those. Room was decent.
We called as listed to get a wifi password only to be informed that the password was listed in the welcome book in the room. We checked and it was not.

Lovely attentive staff who went to great lengths to make my stay a pleasurable. They suggested that before I left town in the morning, I should leave my car at the motel (as long as I liked) and walk across the road to the Saturday market. A fabulous experience of friendly people in a beautiful goldfields town.

A little scary on arrival but was pleasantly surprised when shown the room. Could be really good with a bit more attention to cleaning and outside presentation. Heater didn't work very well. My guess is it needs the filters cleaned. Room icy on arrival and took all night to warm up.

Older style heritage building

The building/hotel in need of a touch up but we were warmly welcomed and treated with open arms and rather good service, the Indian style meal I had was excellent and well presented, also the accommodation units out the back of the building, easy to access and quite clean and very large inside, they rang us ahead of our arrival and put the heater on for us, very nice king size bed and very comfortable to sleep in, they asked why we had come to Castlemaine and replyed, taking wife to the hospital in the morning and could we come back and pick our bags up later, they told us to take our time and if we checked out after 10.00a.m to 1200 noon there was no problems with a late check out, no extra charge, greatly appreciated and very accommodating I must say, very nice stay.
