Great little place, comfortable, clean & friendly

This is a great little hotel to stay in Castlemaine. It might not be five star, or look all that fancy but everything was very pleasant. The room was well curated with some lovely artistic pieces; the bed was not too soft and not too firm; the pillows were just right and the towels in the bathroom were genuinely some of the nicest towels I've had in a hotel or motel in a long time (and I'm including some supposedly much 'posher' hotels that don't get the towels right!). The owner was also lovely; we had a great chat in the morning as we enjoyed the complimentary breakfast downstairs in the former hotel bar and art space; complete with freshly made coffee. So, all in all, for what is really just an old pub that has been turned into a little hotel - it was very pleasant and a great little stay.
As for location - whilst a little bit out of the town centre it was only a ten minute walk which we enjoyed because you pass some great houses and the streets of Castlemaine have so much character; and around the corner from The Mill - a space with a brewery and an Austrian style cafe which serves great Austrian coffee, food and cakes.

Maggie and Badger were very welcoming on my arrival. Despite my leaving at 6am in the morning, breakfast provisions were laid out and ready for me to help myself as promised. The home made poached fruits were delicious and such an appreciated personal touch. My room had everything I needed and I felt extremely comfortable and secure. The balcony is a lovely spot to sit and the hotel itself is a truly unique and lovely boutique experience. Highly recommended!

Very good accomodation.

Nice comfortable hotel. Good facilities and nice self serve breakfast options. No one was there when we arrived, but a quick phone call and we were given access code and told where to find room keys, so no problems. Town is interesting, with nice buildings, steam railway and if you are into cars, visit the Rod shop. Hotel was slightly further from centre of town than we realised, but still walkable. Overall very good.

we found our stay to be quite noisy. the hotel was full and as it is so old you can hear whenever anyone walks up the stairs, or down the corridor to use the bathroom, and even when your neighbors wake at 6 am and chat all morning, everything is heard.
our room was very clean and the bed sheets white and crispy. but unfortunately for us, we found it too noisy to be able to relax and have a sleep in. there was also no wardrobe in the room. we stayed in the olsen King ensuite room. too expensive for the what we received.
For the same price we stayed in a gorgeous Villa at Hepburn Springs the night after.
A continental breakfast is included, its not great. there is bread thats not bought in fresh every morning so is only good to toast. No pastries, no cold meats, if you lucky the fruit might be fresh for a little fruit to go with your toast! The coffee is made by the host and that is nice. but otherwise no trouble is taken to give you a nice breakfast. Better to forgo breakfast and go to the bakery at the side of the hotel and get fresh bread, pastries, etc.
The host is friendly.

Highly recommended

The accommodation is outstanding in a converted hotel, with a library and plenty of communal area. We were there on our own and only stayed one night. It would be great for a group staying for a weekend with a nice area to gather after sight-seeing. At first you might think this is a little far out of the centre of town. But, in addition to the attractions of Castlemaine, here you are just a short walk from: the local brewery The Taphouse; The Bridge Hotel for an upmarket pub meal; and Coffee Basics for coffee and food that is far from basic.

Go to this hotel for a memorable stay. Every inch of the hotel is full of character and coziness. The staff was amazing, but was disappointed with the fact that the bathroom was not an en suite, but across the hall way. We needed keys for the bathroom and our room which in the night is not a pleasant experience. Quite a few floorboards were creaking, therefore couldn't quietly walk down the hallway. Breakfast was ok, but lacked staff to make it a more personable experience. Missed my capuchino, so bought it in the french bakery behind the hotel.

Great boutique hotel

We booked this hotel last minute for a trip to Castlemaine. We arrived at 2.30 and the friendly host checked us in and showed us to our room. Lovely homely feel and impeccably clean. We had a private bathroom outside our room (hate shared bathrooms so this was great) and a huge balcony to relax on. The artwork and ambiance of the building was beautiful and we felt at home. Complimentary port in the relaxing communal area (that didn’t feel invasive by other people) was a lovely touch. We will definetly come back here next time we are in the area.

A charming stay in a beautiful Hotel

From the time my husband Neil and I arrived at the Hotel, we were made to feel very welcome and at home, by our Hostess, Karen. The Hotel is a charming old building.
Our upstairs room was small but very clean and comfortable, and had easy access to the balcony. The balcony has plenty of seating and tables, and was a pleasant area to sit with a cuppa or glass of wine. There were tea-making facilities in our room The large guest fridge is in the hallway. Some rooms have external private bathrooms, however, our room had an ensuite.
We had full use of the beautiful dining area downstairs, full of charming furniture, where we could enjoy the breakfast goodies left out for us by Karen.
The only criticism I have is that there are no wardrobes or cupboards in the room, just a few hangers for clothing on the back of the door, possibly because the room is quite small. Also, the bathroom did not have any cabinets, just a small stool to rest toiletries on. This is fine if only staying for one night.
We found the location perfect and walking distance to the city centre. There is also a little café directly behind the Hotel, that make lovely coffees.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this Hotel, and would recommend it for a short-stay trip.
