Lovely setting in the Chateau grounds , good parking.
The restaurant was grossly understaffed with one waiter who was also in charge of the front desk and one waitress . They made a valiant effort but we waited about 40 minutes before anyone gave usa menu or offered us a drink. I ordered a steak which was about as bad a piece of meat as i ever had, full.of gristle and fat. All in all our dining experience was very disappointing - not blaming the staff who were run off their feet but remained cheerful and helpful, but the quality of the food was dreadful.
Our room was spacious and well decorated and the bathroom was clean and well stocked with toiletries.
I dont like giving negative reviews, but some aspects of this place definitely need improving. Also it was really badly sign-posted and we had to ask someone how to find it. She was a resident and had only a vague idea! Better (any!) directions would help.

Terrible meal!

We decided to splurge and enjoy a nice dinner in the restaurant. The service was a bit slow alrhough they were not very busy. We ordered the dinner with three services. The first course was ok. But the main dish was almost not edible. My piece of beef, described to us as slow cooked for many hours and deliciously tender was just a mass of unedible gelatinous rubber. It was impossible to cut, chew or swallow. If the piece of meat was the size of a deck of cards there was not one mouthful of edible meat. I was terribly dissapointed and mentioned to the wait staff that i could not eat this meat. She said so sorry and walked away. Then followed dessert...it was to be a sort of custard pie....it was so hard that you needed a knife to cut the custard.When you pay more than 140€ for dinner for 2 I expect it to be edible. This dinner was not!

Really nice hotel, lovely design, clean and comfortable rooms, and very friendly helpful staff (especially Colum). Be aware that if you walk into town, the dining options seem to be limited, so maybe eat in the hotel.

Why wouldn't you want to stay in a castle!?

It's a hotel. In a castle. It's brilliant.

We extended our journey so that we could get to spend the night in a castle. Pleased with our decision. Staff were great - they put up with my Franglais and we managed to communicate fine.

Food - excellent. REALLY good kitchen, and we enjoyed a well priced, high quality evening meal. Breakfast was great too.

Then did a tour around the castle, which has nearly 1000 years of history. There was not much else to do in Sedan, otherwise it would have been 5*.

But it's a hotel. IN a castle. It's got to be done.

Very disappointing.
5 Star building, 2 star experience.
Wonderful location in the Chateau Sedan, but a terrible meal and issues with the cleanliness and condition of the room.

Meal, 5 course set meal. The Tartare was poorly prepared and almost frozen and without any seasoning.
Pork Picanha was completely inedible. Looked like it had been left in the sous vide bag.
I gave up at that point as the kitchen clearly wasn't able to present edible food that evening. I could see other diners having issues too.
Raised the issues with the waitress, but nothing was done.
The two worst plates of food anyone has put in front of me for years.

Communal areas are beautiful but the room had peeling paint, black mold in the bathroom, the extractor fans didn't work nor did the safe because batteries had been left in it for years and corroded.

Parking was only available from 6pm onwards, there were no spaces in the communal parking outside of the Fort.

2 stars because the check in experience and communal areas were good.

All the above issues were raised with staff and they were uninterested.

Fortissimo!

The castle is dramatic in it's contruction and the tour well worth the time. The hotel is part of the fort itself and is old and charming. Some rooms are being updated, but ours was already good. Staff friendly and efficient. Parking easy.

Unfortunately my Son left some clothes in his wardrobe and we have had little or no assistance in retrieving them. We understand it isnt the Hotel's fault but we would have appreciated their help finding out where the clothes went as they were very expensive.

It was fun to stay within the chateau-fort walls. The room was clean and comfortable. The bathroom was modern. Breakfast was convenient and good. The breakfast attendant was very friendly and worked hard to keep the buffet and coffee bar stocked.

It's a lovely place to stay but you need really good instructions to find how to get there. Postcode does not really reveal entrance. Would recommend it for ambience. Food fantastic but slightly pricey. Who cares when you have such a fantastic place to stay.

Well worth stopping - fantastic

Fantastic hotel and really superb friendly staff. Location is good and a short walk if you don’t want to eat in the hotel. The second night was fully booked so we tried a local restaurant. Food in the hotel is first class, really first class and they staff were friendly, had a lovely manner and sense of humour. Would be happy to eat there and stay again and again.
Best hotel in France that I have used in years.
Sedan has some shabby streets but is nice to walk around and the hotel is impressive in the Castle walls.

This is an hotel inside a medieval castle. It is atmospheric inside and outside. Rooms are well decorated and comfortable. Grounds are well kept, castle visit interesting. Parking just steps from castle. Very calming and pleasant experience.

Wonderful Setting

Stayed here during the town's medieval festival which takes place on the 3rd Saturday in May every year. The hotel is situated in the centre of the complex that is the Chateau Fort of Sedan, the largest fortified castle in Europe. The setting is wonderful, particularly at night, and the festival itself is very interesting. The hotel puts on nearby parking and a horse drawn shuttle for guests, as the courtyard is taken up with festival activities. The staff are nice. The room was OK, though quite small. It is really a good spot to stay for the Festival but equally is a good place to stay if you are passing through to elsewhere in Europe.

We loved being able to sleep in the castle, and the bed was very comfortable. The room could have had a few extras, such as more pillows and towels than one per person without requesting them, and an iron in the room rather than downstairs. But overall we had a great stay

Nice property but...

The property itself is incredibly charming. The room was nice as well. However, the staff, including both the reception and in the restaurant, could benefit from some customer service training. I was not made to feel much like a welcomed guest either when I checked in or out. Service as a solo diner at dinner and breakfast left a lot to be desired as well. No one seated me, checked up on me, or even brought me my bill.

Be aware that even though it comes off as breakfast being included with the room, you may be charged a surprising 14 € when you check out.

Medieval castle

Staying in the chateau Fort was fantastic as I had worked on the fort in the 90's installing the interactive AV equipment. That was before the hotel was built in a converted part of the fortress wall. There is so much history in the area and although the town itself is rather plain there are a variety of places to visit, especially if you are into history.

Stay in a Castle!

If you want to stay in a castle then look no further. We had a fantastic stay and really enjoyed the rooms which had castle feel mixed with modern comfort. Walking the entire grounds allowed for some nice views and great pictures.Dinner in the restaurant was amazing

Fantastic setting

My wife and I stayed here for one night as part of a short touring holiday in NE France and Belgium.

The idea of sleeping in a medieval castle was really great and the whole hotel from check in to departure went without a hitch.

We ate in the bistro, lovely, a few drinks sitting outside in the courtyard in the warm evening before back to our room.

We couldn't fault it and know that we wil stay there again in the future.

Unusual atmospheric place to stay

We arrived late, hot and exhausted. We had got hopelessly lost in Sedan and was rescued by a kind taxi driver who guided us to the fort's front door. We were welcomed by Collum who was really kind and welcoming. After our experience this meant a lot.

A visit to the fort itself is well worth it, and kids would love it. There was easy access to the small town of Sedan. We enjoyed our stay, the people we met were really friendly and we would love to return.

Medieval castle hotel - dripping with charm.

Europe's largest medieval castle... a great place to stay. Feels like a solidly three-star hotel in a solidly three-star town. Keep your expectations in check. Room was a nice size and boasted an exposed wall, which was really cool. Carpet was a little worn and there was some mold in the bathroom. But overall very well kept otherwise. Parking was a little annoying because there was a bike race going on inside the castle and we had to leave the car a ways out. It didn't seem like the hotel had a backup plan for parking. Castle itself is fascinating and worth the self-guided tour. There's also a back entrance that leads you right into the town of Sedan nearby. It's not Europe's most picturesque town, but there were some good food options.

Perfect Getaway

My wife and I attended a wedding nearby and loved the pictures of this place, so we decided to give it a shot. It was wonderful! We arrived a little before check-in because the wedding and check-in were at the same time, and the hotel was very accommodating in allowing us early access to our room so we could get ready. The room was spacious and elegant and we loved the old-meets-new decor throughout the hotel. The town is adorable and has that genuine French countryside old-world charm.

Stunning Hotel

A fabulous hotel but it would have been nice to sample the restaurant food. Upon arrival we were informed that the restaurant was full - Saturday. If you've travelled a long way and are looking forward to good hot food in your hotel upon arrival, then be warned - this hotel does not put its residents first! We had to walk quite a distance (in the dark) to find food in the town - not recommended for any woman or women who have travelled alone. The restaurant remained closed for the rest of our visit and I would not recommend the food in the bistro/bar (difficult to get a table there, too).

Quirky hotel in the walls of a mediaeval castle

Located in the historic centre in an imaginatively restored and converted castle. The hotel is built into the curtain wall and the rooms are spacious and comfortable. (Double beds are huge.... you need a map reference to find your partner!) The staff are helpful and pleasant and the facilities well up to scratch for a modern hotel while maintaining the feel of the ancient and historic building.

Hard to find using cars satnav but eventually found it and was surprised by the vastness of it all and the entrance thro the gatehouse into the courtyard was impressive. Room was excellent and clean. Inquired about evening meal but told we had not made a reservation so that was that. Unfortunately I had fall in bathroom slipped coming out of shower so take care! Otherwise stay was very good and would stay again.

What a beautiful place to sleep. The hotel part of the fortress has been totaly refurbished to a modern hotel. They kepted the outside wall in all the rooms. So they look old. This place is very nice to stay in. The dinner room is also a good place to eat. Its rated 5 star and taste like that also. Your a 5 min walk to town. And a 45 min drive to Verdun which is a good place to visit the war battelfields.

Lovely to stay in a castle

Used the hotel as a stopover and was very impressed. It is the biggest castle in Europe built about the middle of the 15th century. The exterior walls are the brick the castle is built from but the rooms are modern. A short walk into town with quite a few restaurants. Would thoroughly recommend.

Smart hotel in a rather run-down town.

Stayed here as needed to stay somewhere in this area to break up the journey. Thought the hotel was fantastic, a very impressive building and sensitive conversion. I was surprised that could hear other guests flushing loos in the night! Quite a nice bar where we had some drinks. The restaurant looked smart and interesting but we (perhaps ill advisedly as Sedan is a bit of a dump with limited restaurant choice and a run down air about it) chose to go into town to eat.

Very few decent restaurants in the immediate area. The Hotel restaurant was excellent, service and food combined. Sedan, as we discovered is really not geared to tourism as it is in an industrial area but for an overnighter, we would recommend it.

Not as it looks in the pictures. Staff aloof, and tried to charge !e for two breakfast I had not had and the whole room price again, despite having pre paid, when they confirmed their mistake, not even an apology. The access to ramparts from suite was disappointing mess as building taking place, and three builders vans parked outside the room on the ramparts so unable to take out deck chairs and air outside.
Remanants of other guests toothe paste in grout of bathroom tiles around sink. Yuck!

Nice find, worth the drive

What an awesome find (but be prepared to pay a high ticket price for dinner). The fort is amazing and was really cool to see on a winter day. Our back door opened up to the ramparts of the fort and the night walk was awesome. We had no idea that we needed to reserve a spot for dinner until we checked in, and all that was open was a 9:30pm dinner. We took it because we didn't have much of an option. Dinner was good, but it was really over priced, even for a nice hotel dinner. We couldn't get the wifi to work in our room, which was included in our rate, so that was a bummer, but still, the hotel was beautiful.
I honestly wish the room hadn't been so modern or finished; it would have been awesome to stay in a fort and see the exposed brick instead of plaster - but that kind of detail is obviously rare.

Gem of a hotel, safe feeling living in a Fort

This historical chateau fort was spectacular from the first view. Driving through the narrow front door into the large courtyard to see the impressive structure was like driving through history. Hotel staff was wonderful, most of them were clearly proud of their place and its place in history. Sedan is not the most pleasant town but the Chateau Fort Sedan was well worth the drive. Rooms are a bit cramped but that is to be expected perhaps of a fort.

Hotel Le Château Fort is like a film set, almost expect the three musketeers to arrive. Hotel and parking excellent. if you have time you can go around the fort museum to learn more about the principality. The town is very French and has some very nice buildings. Enjoyed stay and will call in on the way home if room available..

Staying in a 'Castle'

Great place to stay - very different. Our room up on the ramparts was fabulous. A big sitting room with desk, dining table chairs and sofa, then a mezzanine bedroom and bathroom. The only drawback was the lack of windows. The door onto the ramparts from the lower floor was great especially with garden chairs to sit outside overlooking the town. But a couple of skylights to let some more air into the room would have been very welcome.
The hotel was very central to town and was a good base for exploring the area.

We stopped here on the way from Germany to Paris. 3 kids and my wife an I were accommodated in a fantastic room with wonderful views. The staff were very polite and efficient on our arrival, the room was clean and located in the heart of Sedan. We would definitely stay here again and the hotel receives my strongest recommendation.

Atmospheric hotel in a great location

After 450miles driving, much of it in atrocious weather conditions, we arrived at this beautiful, atmospheric hotel to find that they had not received our booking for a suite from Hotels. Com. Full payment had been taken and fortunately they had a standard room available. Apparently that was the SEVENTH time this week this has happened at this hotel. The staff were charming and most apologetic and very helpful in directing us to local places of interest. It was a brief stay but we would certainly return.

After driving around the entire place because we were confused by the directions from the SATNav, we made our way inside the fort and easily found parking. Reception was professional and courteous. When asked if we had made reservations for dinner we answered no and the reaction we received made it sound like that might be a problem--it sounded as is the sleepy French town didn't offer many options nearby. A call was made to the hotel restaurant and we were put on the list for dinner. The room was small, but comfortable. Amenities were modern and enjoyable. Overall, a pleasant experience that we wished could have lasted longer.

We will definitely return and recommend to anyone wanting to visit the area. Bouillon castle is about 30 minutes away. This hotel is worth the little bit extra one might have to drive to see sights in the area.

Awesome!

I wish we had booked more than one night! Such a great atmosphere. A bit hard to find. Google maps directions were a little off, we think and we didn't have more than the printed instructions. It was a very romantic place. We got some Belgium beers at the small bar in the lobby. Very lovely place. Only unfortunate thing was the two glasses in our room had been used for soda or wine from prior guests and they didn't replace them. Hence lower cleanliness rating

AMAZING Hotel

We loved out stay in this hotel; We had a suite and the room was fantastic; an upper loft with full bath and bedroom. A lower downstairs with a fireplace (Not working but great ambience), half bath, sitting area and dining area. You knew you were in a castle and the atmosphere is amazing. Everything was clean and comfortable. We also ate in the restaurant which was superb; Staff was very helpful, patient and friendly! The town itself was nothing out of the ordinary but we wanted a location to explore the Belgium Ardennes region and to stop over on a road trip; so it worked well for us. Only complaint would be except for the bar and restaurant, there was no amenities at the hotel; A spa would've been ideal as in there wasn't a lot to do or see in the town! Would certainly go back.

Beautiful!

Room 610 has a rooftop terrace with great views. Room is spacious and comfortable. Bathroom was clean. Breakfast and dinner were plentiful and delicious. Staff speak English and they were very friendly.

Unique hotel

This hotel is unique. Set in an old fort and wonderfully converted. We did not try the restaurant but had no problem finding places to eat in the town, we stayed 3 nights so had to eat in the town many times!!
Will most certainly be going back.

Staying next to a Medieval Fort

The hotel itself is charming set as it is right next to the Fort. There is plenty of parking space and it is only a short walk into the town. The free wifi worked really well without any complicated logging on procedure. There are lovely
rooms downstairs to sit in and read etc. The barman makes a very good Caipirinha according to my daughter but we were there for four nights and the bar was closed on two of the evenings - Saturday and Sunday which seemed madness. We had an excellent meal in the restaurant and breakfast was good but certainly not worth an extra Eu 13.00 each. Our room was very pleasant and the bathroom was well appointed. Housekeeping could be more efficient and I thought that the taxes at Eu 3.61 per person, per night bumped the cost up.

Good place to visit Sedan fortress

The hotel was very interesting since it was a part of the fortress. We stayed in a superior room which had two levels - ground floor living area with a seperate toilette and top floor with bedroom and bathroom. The room was clean and nicly furnished - especially if you like 'old castle' style. If I were to be picky - in the bathroom the heater was leaking and the bathtube was not cleaned well in the corners - but other than that cleanliness was fair. The big disadvantage - you need to book in advance in order to get a a table in the hotel restaurant - it should be noted in the hotel description. There is no room service and when we asked in the restaurant at least to prepare for us a portion of french fries and a platter of cheeses to take to the room we were denied despite the fact the guests in the restaurant were still being served. We managed however to order a bottle of wine and take to the room. The hotel should have at least some provisions in their bar for a simple snack - a sandwich or similar (even if from a packet). If I needed to stay when passing by the area I would consider the hotel again but only for a short stay 1-2 nights.

Chateau Forte Sedan

It's not an easy hotel to find and Sedan is not the prettiest place. The hotel is on a hill and slightly out of the town so once you get to it it's ok. If we hadn't got such a good deal on room rates via Hotels.com we would have complained about the overall maintenance of the suite.But given what we paid it was brilliant value for money We didn't eat at the hotel. Would recommend Bullion and Dinant - lovely places to visit and lots of restaurant/cafe choices

Comfortable well-furnished room in interesting fort.
Restaurant rather characterless but the meal was enjoyable.
Good choice (help yourself) breakfast but for the price we expected to have been served tea or coffee.

Hotel Chateau Fort, Sedan, France

Finding the hotel was very difficult, GPS does not recognize the street address. The GPS prpblem occurred in France and Luxembourg. The Germans have street addresses; no problems.

The hallways were dark until the hall light sensor saw that I was there, spooky.
The air was humid and dank, the smell of the 30 foot thick limestone walls was strong.
No air conditioning, no fans, humid and uncomfortable.
I did not realize the windows could be opened until the morning I left. They are small and recessed 2 feet into the wall.
Other reviews said the service in the dining room was medicore so we did not try it though the food is supposed to be good. The price for meals was too high for breakfast and dinner.
I had a wonderful meal in nearby Bouillon, Belgium, at a restaurant called Roy de la Moule, very friendly, a very picturesque town. Local restaurants in Sedan closed early. I had an awful meal at a chicken gyros place.

Breakfast at the Le Central Bar a cafe near the open market in town was fun, good expresso and Croque Messiure.. The boulangerie/patisserie (bakery) in town was good. The hotel had some big events the next week that I would have enjoyed.

Great Castle Hotel

This was a great room. We arrived and the only room left was in the tower and was more like a two level suite. The staff appologized that it was a little harder to get to but it was worth the extra walk to ge there. We have stayed in Castles in Europe before and this has got to be one of the better ooms we hav ehad. All amenities were avaialble including internet. Yes we reccommend this hotel and would stay there again.

Lovely hotel, you cant check in till 3pm which is a little strange, only gripe is that when we checked in at 3pm we were told the restaurant was fully booked out which seems to happen a lot as i have seen from other reviews. But the hotel was well prepared for this as they had a print out with local places where we could go!

Stay here, eat elsewhere

Excellent hotel but the service at dinner time in the restaurant was appalling. The food was first rate but it took so long to be served each course it completely spoilt the experience. If we go back to Sedan we would stay here but eat elsewhere.

STEEPED IN HISTORY!!!!

This is a hotel, well Chateau to visit. Its breathtaking, steeped in so much history, so much of it to see. Two days here is a must. Cant wait to return. Such a domineering sight to the city! Take a meal in the restaurant, its a must. 1st class cuisine, real fine dining, WHAT A CHEF!!!! We will return next year for 2 days, 1 is not enough, already planning our next trip.

An old Fort that has been converted to a beautiful, modern, supurb hotel with all the expected services, and furnishings. The Restaurant was fantatic, the presentation adn food quality the best. Breakfast was really good but dinner was mervelous and attractively priced. Think this hotel should be a 4 star at least.

Arrived only to be told no room in restaurant that night. Make sure to ask for gate grille security number. Can't get back in on one entrance without it. We were not informed of this number & had to walk around the whole of the fort to get in. Not a very nice area to be walking about in the dark.Had drunks in our passage way at 1.45am. Night porter said he had problems too, they were trying to get to the drink from the bar

France's best kept secret

On the wall outside, a plaque has recently been fitted to announce that Expedia have rated this hotel to be in the top 1% in the world. Having stayed there, I can heartily agree! It would have been very easy to get this concept terribly wrong, but despite being in a huge castle, they have achieved a warm and homely feel. This is no clone of a chain hotel that could be anywhere in the world. It is a fantastically individual hotel that deserves to be famous.

Le cadre est incroyable, c'est vraiment une opportunité de pouvoir séjourner dans ce cadre historique. L'hôtel est très propre et bien entretenu, le personnel agréable. Les chambres sont un peu classiques mais très bien pour un court séjour. Le point négatif, c'est la chaleur dans la chambre même avec le radiateur éteint, on a été obligés d'ouvrir la fenêtre, avec le bruit que cela entraîne.

Todo limpio, buenas camas, baños comodo. Llegamos a las 9 de la noche un día sábado y no pudimos comer nada! No tenían reservas en el restaurante y no nos ofrecieron ninguna alternativa, todo lo cercano al hotel o cerrado o muy lejos. Lo mejor e inolvidable es donde esta y el castillo maravilloso, soñado!!
