An oasis in the city

A lovely hotel, and welcoming and helpful staff. Our room was spacious and nicely-designed with our own indoor and outdoor shower, and a soothing spa-like feel. Dinners and breakfasts at the restaurant were excellent and a personal tour around town was everything we’d hoped for. It’s a wonderful oasis in the city.

What a fantastic find this hotel was, just 30 minutes from Johannesburg airport. This hotel is well worth the 5 start rating and the service was excellent from our pick up from the airport to our return. Exceptionally good value. We would definitely recommend to other travellers.

nice from far, but far from nice

Unfortunately I was left very disappointed.

- The room phone was faulty and I needed to walk to reception to get it attended to.

- The AC power plug by the desk was not working so I needed to run my cable across the floor.

- The irrigation system outside was not connected properly and spraying the patio and making a noise. The first request to repair went ignored and took a second request for someone to come repair, some 2 hrs later.

- Microwave was faulty and was told that I would not be able to use it! No offer to replace or fix.

- Ordered room service at 6.45pm. At 8pm nothing had arrived and I called reception. 2 min later a plate of ice cold food arrived. Sending it back, 25min later, I was then called informing me that they had run out of stock of that item. Chose a new meal which then arrived at 8.30pm, almost 2hrs after my initial order.

- Upon checkout, I was billed for that same meal twice!

- On advising the check out assistant of my disappointing stay, no apology of any sort, nor even acknowledgement of the issues was offered. It was clear that no training had been provided on how to deal with these situations.

This is a great boutique hotel. Rooms are roomy and extremely comfortable, spa and sauna in room, grounds are spectacular, excellent Resturant with indoor or outdoor seating, and a wonderful well trained staff. Micheal on piano really is exceptional and sets a wonderful mood for dinning and lounge area.

The property is in a nice area and seems to have been nice years back.My experience (sept 14-17 2022) a bit of a nightmare.I booked one of the best rooms with a private jacuzzi.Room was stuffy and dusty.Furniture and decor is out dated and the So called private Jacuzzi didnt even work at all.The front desk staff has no Clue whats going on in the hotel and taking your grievances to them is a complete waste of time.This is just an average hotel which seems to have been great way back ,but now is just an average dumo not worthy to be called a luxury hotel.Was promised a refund for a night,but once i got back to my overseas destination,no one seemed to care and contacting them in anyway is a complete waste of time ,as no one ever calls,emails or contacts you back.Disgraceful how it can even call itself a 5 star hotel.Buyer Beware!!Dont believe all you see on their website..I gues those are the pictures from its early years.The place is stuffy and Musty .Most appliances in the rooms are rusty and as for the So called Jacuzzis..They dont work AND havent worked in a Long time(As i was told by the 5th WAITER who was sent to my room to \"act\"like he was fixing it.What a farce of a place..Nothing but a Bad experience here both from the hotel and the staff and management.

My wife and I stayed at the hotel for two nights and everything was just perfect. Most outstanding was the friendly and interactive way the staff engaged with us.
The spa treatments were excellent and done in a highly professional manner.
The hotel is close to many places in Johannesburg but in a quite environment creating the feeling of \"at home\" .
We will definitive recommend the hotel to others and book again.

Great hotel. Only complaints were that the suite’s hot tub bubbles were not working / broken and they seemed to be leaving it broken vs plan to fix it when I asked about it. Also for some reason the staff would take away the complimentary large bottled water in the room during turndowns before I was done with it and then not replace it until the following afternoon.

This is an amazing boutique hotel. It is one of a kind! We felt like we were staying in someone's home. The staff is friendly but very respectful of your space, they get to know you and anticipate your every want. The hotel is warm and inviting and has many different rooms where you can relax, have coffee or a drink, sit by the fireplace, sit in a sunroom, sit by the pool, etc. The rooms are clean and quiet, the bed is comfortable with beautiful linens, the bathroom was a bit small in our room but had all the necessities. The breakfast they offered had something for everyone and the food selections for other meals was varied. An extraordinarily and comfortable experience. You would not be disappointed if you choose this hotel.

Fabulous - staff so friendly and attentive

Fabulous hotel! All the staff were friendly and so attentive. We stayed for two days without leaving the hotel and it was treat after treat. We booked a suite and enjoyed our balcony with jacuzzi. Bathroom was large and very beautifully presented. Spa treatments (body scrub and hot stone massage) were wonderful. Breakfast buffet was of finest quality and you could choose from a hot menu too. We also enjoyed our casual lunch and dinner and I thought the prices were very reasonable for the quality. Loved having a fridge with complimentary drinks and fresh milk for tea. Lots of beautifully furnished lounges to sit in and an amazing fishpond. Didn’t use the small gym but it had a good range of equipment. Everything has been thought of. Can’t wait to go back!

We have travelled the world and stayed in many fine hotels but this is the first hotel that we were awed by. Everything was wonderful. We wish that it was in Europe or somewhere closer to North America so that we could come back again but Johannesburg is too far for us to return to. it is an incredible place to stay and the neighbourhood is very affluent and safe. If there was an option of giving it a ranking above 5 we would.

The bar tenders, drivers, were excellent. Certain front desk staff were not to helpful and had an attitude. Coming from the W Dubai, and owning a boutique hotel myself, I can say that it certainly was a let down. However the drivers and Lower level staff were excellent and exactly what I would expect. Everything else was on par with a 5 star boutique hotel.

Unusually individual, elegant rooms - ours had a sitting area with fireplace, and outdoor deck with shower. Excellent dining experience. Nice stay but all too brief. Security is heavy around the perimeter, as it is for most in town hotels, homes, schools in Johannesburg. Drove through some run down areas to get to the hotel but the Immediate area surrounding the hotel was nice.

Two nights in Jo'burg.

The hotel is tucked away in a very safe residential area of Johannesburg. The staff team is professional, helpful and make a big effort to make your stay as nice and comfortable as possible. Our suite was a reasonable size and had a lovely balcony with hot tub. The design offered a great degree of privacy which you rarely get in hotels. The public areas were full of interesting things to look at. The Spa was very unusual and offered a great choice of treatments. Restaurants a short drive away. The hotel offers several chauffeur driven excursions which are quite expensive but worth while. Our driver Marvin was a fantastic guide. He has lots of local knowledge and history and was very keen to share.

Old School Vibe and 5 Star Service

We stayed there twice in our trip to South Africa, On the way in and on the way out. Each time we had a suite with unique amenities. The food at the restaurant was some of the best food in the whole country. The service was really spectacular. The staff is super friendly and attentive. The facility even though its kind of easy to get lost because its 3 old mansions put into one large estate is really nice. There are numerous pools and amenities so it was quite a unique setting. We had a hickup w/an airport pick up and management went above and beyond to make sure we were satisfied with the misunderstanding. Great Hotel! -

Huge and well-appointed rooms/suites. Our suite (#15) not only had a large shower and soaking tub, but also a sauna downstairs plus a jacuzzi and pool w private patio! An Intimate Experience At The Residence Hotel

This was our second stay at The Residence; it will not be our last.
An oasis of charm, character and boutique sophistication in big city Johannesburg.
Mr. Moses (?Butler) deserves special mention.
The excellent kitchen also churned out a symphony of great food. The ambience and character of this special small luxury hotel was unsurpassed.
I unreservedly recommend this gem.

A wonderful welcome and comfortable visit

We only had 24 hours in Joburg. This hotel looked after us so well and is reasonably central to be able to visit the Rosebank Mall and Arts and Craft centre (10 mins) and the Apartheid Museum (30 mins). The airport was only 25 mins away too.
The hotel is beautifully appointed with the most attentive staff. We didn't use either swimming pool but did enjoy a wonderful dinner and use of their extensive wine list!
The bedroom was a good size and the be linen and pillows were SOO comfortable.
We will be back!

Absolute luxury!

Excellent staff, amazing amenities, great food, wonderful pianist, beautiful setting. We stayed for 2 nights on our way to and from Madagascar, and it was perfect both times. We booked their car transport to and from the airport and they were waiting for us when we arrived, a welcome sight after a15+ hour flight. We had dinner, lunch and breakfast and all were excellent. There were also lots of little extras in all the rooms, robes, slippers, sherry, amarula, gourmet nibbles and candy. The multitalented pianist who is able to play anything you care to hear, has also written an interesting novel which is for sale in the gift shop. The rooms were beautiful, lots of interesting art, crystal chandeliers everywhere and very comfortable. They allowed us to keep our room for the day as we had a late departure, which was very kind, although I am sure that depends on availability. Many comfortable spaces to sit inside and out, a koi pond, 3 pools, one heated. Beautiful gardens and more birds than we saw on safari.

I truly have to give 6 starts to the folks at The Residence, This was an AMAZING stay. The staff was absolutely outstanding from the moment we arrived to the moment we left, catering to our every need as if we had known each other for years. Special thanks to Mr. Warren and Ms. Charity for all they did for us. Words cannot explain how grateful my sisters and I are for all your care and attention. One of my sisters was going through a very difficult time, hence the reason for our brief getaway and you all made my efforts worth every second of the trip!

This Residence is truly \"boutique\" in every sense of the word. This will definitely be my new 'home\" when ever I visit Johannesburg.. and believe me, I shall be back! :-)!

We work in the travel and hospitality industry, and this was by fare one of the best experiences we have EVER had.
The Residence is exactly that. A place to call home. A place you never want to leave.

A hotel that feels like a home

My only regret is that I didn't get the residence boutique to pick me up from the airport - to ensure the smooth stream of excellent service we received from the moment we arrived at the hotel. I would advise anybody to use their transport services, its affordable and gives one a sense of security and elegance that you don't get from an Uber Black.

After being poured a glass of bubbly and asked some short questions, check in was done! No need for lengthy forms or waits (even though we arrived early for check in). The hotel and room decorations are wonderfully classic old school, without getting too heavy handed. There's a wonderful use of space so that you feel more like you are in a forest maison than in residencial Johannesburg.

We had lunch at the restaurant, and everything was impecable. The tempura prawn was particularly delicious.

But mostly I would have to commend the ever attentive, ever present staff.

It was a wonderful stay, and I have already heartily recommended the lodge to my friends.

A great hotel in Johannesburg

The Residence Inn is located in the upclass neighborhood of Houghton where Nelson Mandela had his home and where his wife still resides. The neighborhood is full of muti-million dollar homes and perfectly safe for walking. There is a modern shopping mall nearby, and the staff will take you there. The food and service were excellent. My wife and I staid in the Penthouse from which we had a view over the tops of neighboring homes. The Penthouse has a deck measuring a couple thousand square feet that has a hot tub, dining table for four, a sitting area for four and a swinging chair all arranged beautifully with tropical plants. We enjoyed breakfast on the terrace every morning and unwound in the hot tub in the evening. I strongly recommend the Residence Inn.

We travelled for our 25th wedding anniversary and stayed one night. From airport pick-up (with free wi-fi in the car) it was 5-star luxury all the way!! The rooms are gorgeous, the staff is fantastic and the service is top notch! Best turn-down service EVER! No ordinary breakfast buffet, oh no they serve every table with its own buffet tray!! The private jacuzzi was the reason we picked this hotel and we are so glad we did - one of the best hotels we have ever stayed at. The only thing I would change is to have a vanity table with a stool, mirror and electric outlet so you can sit down and do your hair and make up instead of standing at the bathroom mirror with the hairdryer plugged into the shaver!

Beautiful Hotel, Terrible Service and Attitude

This is a hotel that bills itself as a luxury boutique hotel, and it is as far as the location goes, the service however is by far not matching it, and the bad attitude is only making it worse.
I reserved for a luxury suite, and at check-in was presented with a sort of window gallery open to the swimming pool with absolutely no privacy, and no safety as essentially public walkways of the hotels had direct access to all my windows and glass doors.
As I politely indicated that I could not take this kind of accommodation, the staff found me another suite, and although I was willing to pay for it, a young staff member (trainee?) indicated that the upgrade was complimentary and that he was happy that they could find something acceptable, to which I indicated that I was much obliged and thankful. Nothing wrong with that, except that at check-out, the price of the upgrade was included. When I asked what that was, I was sternly told that the upgrade was at that cost, and when I told about the staff person telling me that it was complimentary, after a long time debating in some back room, I was told that it was not right, and served a convoluted story about the upgrade being for my original luxury suite to the one I was presented at check-in (remember the one that had the privacy of a train station). And when I caught the staff in question, who was trying to hide as I was leaving, had even the nerve to tell the same story looking me in the eye telling me that he wasn't going to argue

Amazing in every way!

Everything was perfect! I see why it is rated so high. The staff was friendly and helpful, the rooms were huge and well decorated. The hotel was quiet and relaxing. Exactly what we were hoping for after a long flight. We wish we had stayed another night.

We came the first time for a night and found oasis in the big city. We came back after few days again and we were looking forward to come back for another night and a day. It's a such relaxing place with excellent staff. The restaurant is so good that you don't need to think of any other place to go for the lunch or dinner. The transportation from airport to the hotel is excelent.Looking forward to come back.

great place!

This hotel is beautiful and comfortable and feels very safe. The restaurant is lovely and the service is great. The spa on the rooftop was heavenly-great view, beautiful flowers, and wonderful massage. The gift shop was also very nice, with well-priced and fashionable items. The driver, Nhlanhla, who picked us up and delivered us to airport was kind and professional. The vehicle was first class as well. I highly recommend this property and would love to stay there again.

Stayed here for a night. Just to get away and this place is a gem. We were treated like royalty. The food was amazing. Afternoon tea is superb. At night I took a shower outdoors. Room had private deck with jacuzzi and shower. The grounds are emaculate. So many sitting areas. Spa treatments. ..food complimentary sherry and wine in the room

Excellent luxury hotel in Joburg.

Beautifully furnished with antiques. Large room with separate sitting area and Jacuzzi on the terrace. Hyper friendly staff, great assistance with tours, sightseeing and arranging car transportation by the friendly hotel staff. Great restaurant with excellent meals and wine. Great full English breakfast. Honestly, cannot recommend with more enthusiasm. Try it!

Quiet get away

We stayed two nights. We had a nice chat with the owner. This hotel is 5 years old and composed of 3 separate homes tied into one facility. This explains the 3 separate pools. it is 30 minutes from the Airport and 15 minutes north of downtown in the section of town called Houghton.
