I have stayed in many different hotels in South Africa. This is the worst 4 star hotel I have ever been to. Here are my reasons :

1. There were no spoons in the room to make coffee or tea.

2. They placed sachets of the cheapest type of coffee in the room.

3. There were no bath towels in the room.

4. There was a loud drilling sound. Extremely unpleasant experience. I was advised there is a factory nearby. So this is a long term issue.

5. Parking is horrible. I didnt feel safe parking car on road.

6. Door leading to balcony was old and very difficult to close.

7. Very noisey, with traffic and I was apparently on the quieter side of the hotel.

I would suggest management also train staff to double check rooms before allowing check in.

I checķed out the same evening. I just told front desk I had a family emergency as i was not in the mood to get into details as to my unhappiness.

This hotel should be downgraded to a 1 star or 2 star hotel. I have stayed in much better 1 star and 2 star hotels in South Africa.

And to top it all off, I was called the next day with a staff member saying they noticed 2 towels missing, implying I took it.

When i saw their number pop up on my phone, I thought they were calling to check on my stay but sadly it was to accuse a guest of stealing towels which was not there in the first place.

Good ROI and super location

No nonsense stay for Business travellers or backpackers. Clean property with a small seating area, that also serves as a bar, right at the reception. Spacious Bathrooms that may be old but are properly functional. Balconies attached to the room for getting some fresh air. Good bang for your buck if you are not looking to spend lavishly just for the night stays. Safe surroundings with plentiful restaurants and coffee shops within a 5 minute walk.

The Room was clean and neat.
. however there was no water in the room. When we request water it was closed.
The shower drain is blocked. I forgot to mention it to the personnel. They need to give it attention. The parking area in the basin was really scary. I wont recommend that to anybody.
The personnel was fantastic. both when we checked in and when we checked out the following morning. The breakfast was really delicious.
overall we enjoyed the stay.

Our stay at Ascot, was comfortable. We had the standard rooms off the main entrance which were initially noisy due to the close proximity to local restaurants, this soon quitened as the night progressed. Breakfast was lovely and the staff most helpful. We found the hotel to be good value for money.

Nice, clean hotel in a safe neighborhood with many restaurants. Good breakfast and very pleasant staff. On check-in, they requested my credit card and then immediately charged me for 2 nights. I had to point out that I had already paid in full through Expedia.They immediately credited my Visa but just beware...

We had a fantastic 6 night stay. There are a few options for breakfast and the service is always friendly and welcoming (great cappuccino!). Be sure to close out your evening at the bar where we had great conversations and enjoyed live music (as well as generous pours on the G&T).

The hotel is on Grant Street and surrounded by a number of restaurants, shops, and close to a grocery and pharmacy. Head over to The Factory and the Fireside Bistro for upscale, but affordable, meals. You are a short walk from the satyagraha museum and an Uber ride gets you to museums, breweries, and more in only 15 minutes. You cannot go wrong by staying here.

I will be back in Joburg a few times over the next few years for work and will not stay anywhere else.

Hotel was very comfortable and very clean. Two things that are important to me is whether the beds are comfortable and the shower is great! The bed had clean white linen and was very comfortable. The shower was great except the first night there was no hot water as there was a problem with the geyser which was handled very well by the very friendly staff, Andre was very friendly and went out of his way to help.

Beautiful hotel, excellent staff and very welcoming. Day spa was wonderful and loved the room service menu and free wifi.

My only complaint is the evening noise and I was not prepared for the social scene the hotel is located in. I was a bit put off on the area when I arrived as I did not expect a 4 star hotel to be have those surroundings as the website images did not show that.

The evenings are quite noisy in the streets, especially on Saturday the 18th there was partying, very load music and socialising in the hotel restaurant and streets till after midnight. As I was there on business and had early morning meetings I did not appreciate the noise and partying. The rooms do not filter out the noise as, my room 7, has a clear gap in the patio door frame letting all the noise in. I also kept the curtains drawn as the block of flats opposite the hotel's entrance is quite an eye sore and made me feel uncomfortable. Unfortunately I could not get a good nights rest in for my early morning meetings and I arrived quite tired back in Cape Town on Sunday.

Other than that, the hotel is beautifully furnished, the finer touches are appreciated and your staff are excellent. It's really just the noise and location was a bit off for me!

Great evening spent at the Ascot Hotel. Great value. The are however two small thing I would like to mention, Lighting was not good in the room. I am a 6'0\" gentleman and found the shower small.

Modern hotel in good location

The Ascot staff was helpful and incredibly friendly. The facilities were really clean and inviting and the private parking was comforting. The only qualm I had was that the king size bed was actually two twin XL beds pushed together. I would definitely stay here again.

The hotel suited our needs for the 2 nights we were in Johannesburg. The room was small, nowhere to sit except on the bed. Bed comfortable with adequate bedding. All in all it was fine for a short stay but I couldn't see myself spending more than 2 nights. Staff were friendly and helpful. The city views that were touted on the website were not inspiring at all.

Although smoking was not allowed in the rooms, it was allowed on the balcony resulting in the room smelling very smokey. Staff were very helpful & we moved rooms to a much less smokey room. Local area - we felt a little vulnerable walking at night to nearby eating places.

Old outdated hotel

It was the oldest and most outdated hotel I've ever stayed at. No washcloth hard and uncomfortable bed. The balcony has no views and the room doesn't even have complementary bottles of water. Breakfast was ok but limited some items are not included. Wifi was weak only works at your room door or in common areas the pizza shop down the block is open 24hrs with strong fast wifi so we went there at night to use it. The staff was friendly and did their best to help us. there's a charge upon checkout that isn't listed on Hotels.com

Lovely hotel in a surprising location

Lovely hotel with only 15 rooms. In an area of shops so view from room overlooks shops. We stayed for a night away from the kids and to celebrate our anniversary. Room well appointed. Not sure if this applies to all rooms but only has a shower. The staff were very friendly and helpful. The only faults I would point out is the attention to detail in as far as our room tea and coffee, and the fact that two major ingredients for breakfast - salmon and pastrami - were not available.

We had sundowners at a bar opposite the hotel situated in \"The Factory Shopping Centre\" with amazing views of Johannesburg.

We had a one-night stop-over between flights and thought this hotel was closer to the airport than it turned out to be, Nice hotel though, good breakfast and facilities but too far from Johannesburg if your visiting as a tourist and too far from the airport for a stop-over.

Hotel needs an update. Old rugs on reception area that gets caught on your luggage wheels. Room carpets looks old. They still.use old fashion lock and key which makes you not feel secure staying or leaving your stuff behind. Very loud noise from the street outside even windows are closed.

I'm General I liked it. The people were all very friendly and helpful. The breakfast was a really good meal. It is not for people who want a big smart new luxury hotel. It provides all I needed in the location I wanted at a good price. There is some noise and the area is not Sandton but me It was a bit of Africa and perfect. Do not take yout car into the underground parking. It is hard to get out due to a narrow exit.

As advertised, the Ascot is a Boutique Hotel with only two floors of rooms. The Hotel is in the middle of Norwood which has a few eateries nearby. If you're a Muslim, you'd be happy to know that there were a quite a few Halal places there.

Check in was straightforward and the staff always ready to help and assist. The room was comfortable and clean. The bedding and towelling were great. Breakfast was made to order. They provided a menu of several things for breakfast and you can pick and choose which one you wanted.

The only disadvantage which didn't bother me but might bother some very light sleepers was that the windows easily let noises from the street outside.

All in all a very pleasant stay. Would definitely recommend.

Everything was fine with the rooms & the locality of the hotel. Breakfast had limited choice & the service was slow. We had other problems as well! We had 3 bookings & had booked 3 rooms in all 3 bookings, thro' expedia but the hotel did not have our first booking! The staff was kind enough to accommodate us with an upgrade. At the time of check out, we were asked to pay some nominal amount which I did not expect. Another day, we had asked for packed breakfast & at the last moment they coolly said that chef had not come yet & no breakfast was given! The management did not bother much when we complained!

Solid but overpriced.

It was okay. Rather overpriced for what it is. As it is independent I wonder why it has gone for a corporate City Lodge kind of look. The room was small and bland. Looks good in pictures but rough corners. All would be fine but it is expensive for what you get in the end for over R1000 for one person.
Included breakfast was disappointing as they had run out of the (from the freezer so rather tough) croissants after two orders and stood rather helplessly until we suggested the same breakfast with toast. They also only had strawberry juice and forgot to tell us that coffee wasn't included. This all seemed a bit odd as there were 8 of us booked in (following a wedding) so surely they should have stocked enough breakfast ingredients.
Although lacking in initiative, the staff were very sweet. They tried to fix things as best they could. Lovely people. When my breakfast came with toast it was delicious.
If I was back in the area for another trip or wedding I would stay somewhere a bit cheaper with more character and value for money.

small but comfortable, neat and clean hotel. i really pleased on arrival, when a person on the reception, called me by name and warm welcome, that was much appreciated and really feel personal.

staff is very helpful and courteous. area is not that good for the foreigner.

need to improve : hotel has no travel desk, prepare your own itenary and book cab for roam around.
need to expand for the menu in breakfast , meal if frequent foreigners are expected. also need a security guard at the entrance.

Perfect for a inner-city mini break!

We stayed at the Ascot for a one night birthday break, after spending a few hours in their divine adjoining spa - Beauty by Laser (superb!). The staff were wonderfully friendly, efficient and welcoming. It's a very well maintained old hotel, with a narrow carpeted stairway and awesome old elevator to the rooms. The bed was very comfortable, although the pillows were rather hard. We dined out on Grant Avenue and then had a delicious breakfast in the hotel dining area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back.

\"Me time\"

Enjoyed my stay at the Ascot (first time). Why Ascot?.... because of appearance, Spa on premises, near theatres and privacy. Sometimes noisy from outside, view not that great but I didn't mind because I'm more of an in-side person. I will visit Ascot Hotel again as I felt safe, don't want my vehicle to stand outside again. Thank you see you soon.
