Nice hotel near the Wanderers Club

This hotel is a short walk (less than 1 min.) across the parking lot from the Wanderers Club conference center. The staff are very friendly, organized, and efficient. The restaurant is very good, and it opens early (630am) and closes late. My room was very clean, and the desk was large and good for working.

No water available following 2 requests! Only one towel per person each day! No credit issued if you prepaid everything. It is as if you didn’t exist had to pay for everything as you proceeded.
Terrrible hotel would not stay there again !

We were given a room that had 13 steps to go up to. No elevator no ramp. Unexpected. Very nice staff. Nice to have restaurant there. Minimal vegan options and nothing for breakfast but fruit. Unexpected as most places we have good have vegan options. Room super small.

Though about 30 mins from the airport, it is an ideal place to stay. Very secure. Has 3 shopping malls nearby ( though not walking distance away).
The food is lovely . Great choice of drinks . Family friendly.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone interested in visiting Johannesburg

Friendly staff but hotel has zero character.

Staff are friendly but the 2020 refurb of the hotel did away with any acceptable form of personal storage in the rooms. No drawers, just open storage, some of which is very low to the ground. Rooms are small, and not soundproofed. As there is loud music over the weekend, that's not a good experience. Hotel also has no business center. Previous cozy bar was removed in refurb and replaced by cafe style bar which completely lacks character. Could be in a mall. Good safe parking available.

Revamped hotel with great location and service

Great location near Sandton and Melrose Arch with a view over the Eastern suburbs. During Covid, the interior has been revamped to have a fresh new modern feel. Very comfortable. Service is a challenge during Covid-19 times, but staff was very friendly and helpful. Really enjoyed my stay. The weekend rate was exceptional value for money. Recommended!

Awesome stay - very neat and clean...enjoyed the space in the room compared to other hotel rooms we stayed in, it seemed to be much more spacious.
Adherence to covid level 4 rules were on point.
An overall enjoyable stay, definitely intending on booking again soon

The rooms had very few plugs, the safe was minute, enough for jewellery or wallet, not a laptop. No bedside lamps with switches, no drawers in room only shelves in cupboards.

I have been staying here for several years and one thing I saw on this last trip is that the building is in need of smoe renovation. Small things like buttons on the lift not working well, etc.
Things one would notice if you have stayed at newer buildings recently.
But overall, the building is okay.

The one towel in bathroom was dirty when we arrived. When I showered, the handle of the tap came off while water still boiling. Almost burnt myself. There was only cups and glasses four 1 person in room and only enough coffee and sweetener for one person.

Excellent location for my purposes. Excellent parking, check in and check out. Food in restaurant average. Very good value for money, with well equipped room - fridge, work desk, tv, full bathroom, lots of cupboards, good block out curtains, good (small) safe, and very quiet. They do not even have a 'PING' when a lift arrives.

ONLY PROBLEM - terrible wireless internet in the bedroom (room 509). Signal in corridor 100%; NO signal at the desk in the room. Could not do whats app. Could not do basic emails without signing on repeatedly.
Reported this twice at reception - no reaction (probably because the signal near the lifts and in the corridor is so good).

Downstairs lobby area is very nicely decorated with great furniture and a lovely pool area, however the upstairs bedrooms don’t match, with outdated bathrooms, tiny bedrooms and just not what I expect from a 4*hotel - one tiny hand towel between two, one drinking glass between two, one plug socket, no bathrobes, etc. We did have an excellent stir-fry buffet dinner when we arrived and the chef and staff were great, however when we came down for breakfast we were greeted by miserable, downcast, staff who were slow and disinterested- tables were not set, had to ask about 5 times just to get a coffee and the food was not great. We felt the mood came down from management and the staff were unmotivated and probably treated poorly. We did, however have one very helpful young man who served us with bar snacks and coffee in the lounge before we left - nothing was too much trouble for him. We had just left the Hyatt Regency at Rosebank and couldn’t help but compare so we were disappointed in general with the overal space, the rooms and breakfast in particular.

Warm welcome back to Protea Wanderers.

Very comfortable hotel. Well located, near Sandton, near freeway, near Melrose Arch.
Room is not large, but very quiet and comfortable.
Service is very friendly and efficient. I've stayed at Protea Wanderers many times and it's always nice to be welcomed back.
Drinks at the pool at the end of the day was very relaxing with a view over East Johannesburg.
Plenty of parking. Breakfast is ample. I never ate dinner there as Melrose Arch complex is just down the road with a wide variety of restaurants.
No hesitation to recommend this hotel for a business stay.

A beautiful hotel close to the wanderers

When we booked with hotels.com we specified bed type as king size. We were going to check in late so I called them around 2 to inform them of this. However, they called at 6 to find out if we were still coming so there was obviously no message put on our reservations or lack of communication between the reception people. When we arrived at 6.30 I noticed that the room type given was twin beds. I corrected them then they indicated that we would have to wait 30-45 mins for our rooms to be ready. Cherie, the person who checked us in was polite and kind and issued drinks vouchers for us while we waited. The hotel overall was stunning. I was very impressed by the decor and the rooms were comfortable and clean. It was the perfect place for us to stay as we were going to the wanderers stadium the next day. We will definitely be back and hope that the check in process will be more efficient next time.

The Protea Wanderers is an ok hotel. The traffic noise is horrendous. Absolutely no question of opening the window on a hot summer's evening in this hotel. The one meal I had at the hotel was good but not great. For the rest a solid 4 star and at the price, reasonable value.

I had a puncture near the hotel & luckily the manager was in the car behind me. He stopped, organised changing my tyre in 5 minutes, helped me with the car rental company and took us to where we were going, so we didn't need to drive.
Another day I was sick from exhaustion. A different manager phoned regularly to check and see if I was OK. When I asked for toast and coke, he brought it up himself!
All the other staff are friendly and helpful.
Hotel pool is open 24 hours a day and swimming at night was an amazing experience!

Nice hotel in a centric place

I had a great experience; the staff was amazing and welcoming, the shuttle could drive you to near places where you could catch the Gautrain and other public forms of transportation.
It is located near Hyde Park, Sandton and Rosebank malls which was useful for us.
The room was clean and very comfortable, I enjoyed my stay very much!

Our stay at Protea Hotel Wanderers was good. Staff were extremely helpful and friendly. We had a couple issues with check in and with one of the rooms but the general manager went out of his way to rectify the issues!

Overall very nice hotel to stay and and would definitely stay there again.

Avoid hotel for business use

Really poor experience, I needed to use the internet for making business calls, very poor performance and had to cancel some client deals or go to another hotel due to this. Even though the start were great especially Sheri who was very supportive and very strong with her customer services. However, if I am being fair, overall the hotel seemed to have a number of shortcuts and I would not feel comfortable bringing clients in to this hotel.

Front desk staff was not helpful. We asked when we checked in about getting a taxi to the airport for the next morning and were told that it would be no big deal, come down and get a taxi. The next morning we called down and the front desk staff said we should have booked one the night before and that there were no taxis for at least an hour. They wouldn't give us the taxi number nor would they do anything to help us make our flight. We ended up getting an uber ourselves but in the process wasted half an hour with the unhelpful staff.
