We did not know what to expect from this hotel but were very surprised by the cool vibe of the hotel. We knew we had arrived due to the big plane in the front of the property, with a Q on the tail. The front desk greeted us, looked up our reservation and offered to show us some other rooms. Some of the rooms have unusual jacuzzi/hot tubs and the one we reserved had an old copper cheese boiler about 4 feet deep. Very cool, but we are both handicapped and there was no way we could get in and out of it. We usually do not do stairs, but TK offered to show us one on the upper floor. The Caesar Court room is amazing with pillars surrounding the jacuzzi and also the bed. TK upgraded us to this room and helped carry up our luggage. Breakfast was only adequate. The breakfast area has a large round fireplace that is surrounded by 16 vintage/antique barber/styling chairs, with tasteful decorations on the wall. We would stay there again in a heartbeat.

This is our 3rd stay with Don Q and will continue to stay again when nearby.. Staff and family are nothing short of amazing.. always there to help in any way. We stayed in the Casino Royal room. Fun vibe, huge room and bathroom. New massive jetted tub with overhead TV. Pool and hot tub were the perfect end to a super hot day. Clean and well maintained.. Full Breakfast Bar with so many choices. Do not let the outside appearance detour your choice. We stayed in several motel/hotels during our trip with many of them being high end properties and the Don Q was by far the BEST stay.

We had a very clean room, spacious. No couch but was comfortable. Very clean pool area and welcoming staff. Our children were very loud in the pool area but we were still treated kindly. Breakfast was alright too. We've chosen to stay here everytime we make the trip to the House on the Rock or Cave of the Mounds because our rooms are always well cleaned and this place has many unique traits for a hotel. Very pleased.

Definitely a unique property a big 1950s airplane on the front lawn. Our room was large, clean, and comfortable. If you're tired of staying at the 'cookie-cutter' hotels, the Don Q is just the opposite.

I loved the character of the hotel! There is so much history and it is nice to know that the current owners are trying their best to maintain the hotel's quirkiness. The owner is a workhorse and is happy to share information about the hotel's history and places to visit in the area. The hotel has some themed rooms, but I stayed in a regular room, which was clean and very spacious. It would be fun to experience one of the themed rooms. Be sure to check out the plane in the front. The pool and hot tub are great! There is a nice hot breakfast every day. The hotel is close to The House on the Rock and Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin in Spring Green. Nearby is Cave on the Mounds. If you eat in Dodgeville, check out Bob's Bitchin' BBQ downtown. The Mexican restaurant was also recommended to me, but I did not have a chance to eat there. If I am in the area again, I would definitely stay at the Don Q Inn!

The “Theme room” was okay, but very old and not what we expected. The tub had hair in it, some coming out of the jets, so we didn’t use that. The chairs in the room are worn and dirty. and the bathroom is from the 80’s and needs updating. I wouldn’t normally take the time to write this, but we paid $265 for one night, it definitely was not worth that price. We rarely get “date nights” and we were both very disappointed as to how we spent it. The plane outside was an interesting piece of history, we enjoyed that!

My wife and I booked the Arabian Nights themed room for our 10th anniversary because it looked like a fun room. When we arrived at the hotel, TK greeted us very warmly and actually offered to show us 3 total themed rooms, including the one we originally chose, that were available for the same time frame and all the same price or a few bucks less. After touring all 3 rooms, we ended up choosing the Jungle Safari room, and it was the right choice. It was a really fun themed room. The best part of it was the hot tub that actually had the water coming from the \"rock\" wall, so it kind of imitated a jungle waterfall. The only con for me (being 6ft tall) was that I had to duck in a couple places in the room, but that wasn't much more than a minor inconvenience. There was even a second TV on a ledge above the hot tub.

It is an older hotel, so don't expect everything to be perfect, but there were no problems with anything in the room or the parts of the hotel that we encountered. It's all up to date and kept very clean and tidy.

Breakfast was awesome, biscuits and gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage links, a good selection of breakfast drinks... I don't know what the rest of the breakfast was, but there were more options as well.

Overall, I'd rate our trip at 9-9.5/10.

We checked in and our room was dirty, smelled horrible and when complained at they desk was told she'd send someone to check the room later. The hot tub was dirty and when I attempted to clean it found out it didn't drain. The mini fridge had a short in the cord. The TV didn't connect to any channels and found mold when trying to adjust tv. Eventually they switched our room afyer complaining again and first thing I see when walking in was an empty beer bottle sitting next to the hot tub. Large hand prints high on the mirrors. This room was cleaner but questionable by this point.

The Don Q Inn is a very unique place to stay. We chose it because it was close to The House on the Rock and well priced. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. We were traveling and arrived at almost midnight. They had no problem waiting for us to check in, we just called to notify them. The rooms were clean, if outdated, but everything worked well. The pool and hot tub were clean and well maintained. We felt safe while we were there and met nice people who were also traveling. We would definitely stay again for the price and for the vibes. The plane was cool to see and we would want to check out the themed rooms!

I wish I could have seen this place back in the heyday of the weird House on the Rock guy escapades. My son noted that it felt like the House on the Rock had a baby hotel and this place happened. The hotel is clean. The staff was very nice. The game room was underpromoted and one of my son's favorite things. We played foosball, air hockey, pool (billiards) and ping pong. We ran out of time or we would have asked if they had cards to play on the giant cribbage board. The swimming pool was very nice (and clean) too. Areas that feel short. The bed was pretty hard with really old bed spreads, but it was clean. The room was HUGE and clean, but the lighting was low and although kitchy - it felt like it was cobbled together with yard sale finds. I'm not sure how I feel about the rooms being called stalls (knowing house on the rock down the road was all about seggs stuff). The vending machine had only two packages of fruit snacks in it. The free breakfast was not good at all. The first morning the juice machine wasn't turned on leaving only milk, coffee and tea to drink. There were no cold food options (other than cereal) and the warm food tasted weird, like it either was reheated multiple times, or was in the freezer so long it lost what it was supposed to taste like (this included the gravy (for biscuits and gravy), sausage and egg-type circles). No fruit, yogurt, etc. The best part was the local kid, Jack, who taught me about the cargo plane outside.

They were very accommodating about providing an extra blanket because I get cold easily. The airplane is pretty awesome also. Would definitely stay here again.

We loved our stay there. The first night we played pool, air hockey & checkers. There was a tornado watch in effect, so we spent a lot of time in the lobby watching the tv. Breakfast was good but not hot enough. There was a nice variety though. For it being an older building, our room was impeccably clean. The hot tub was perfect for relaxing after a 3 hour tour of House on the Rock.

This property was the most run down and misrepresented hotel I have ever stayed at. VERY misleading on what it actually is. I can’t believe it is still able to operate from a safety and health standpoint. We had planned to stay three nights but after only one night we bolted and are being denied a refund. Creepy and unsettling is the feeling inside. When checking in the owners and/or staff were just sitting on the couch waiting very strangely and quietly for someone to walk in. At first I thought they were guests as they just stared at me before welcoming me to check in. No uniform or anything that identifies them as associated with the hotel. From the start you could tell it was older and run down but we had no idea what we were about to experience inside of the room. The bathroom was disgusting. Openings in the bottom of the wall where you could see insulation. Cabinet doors were all bolted in very strangely. Found large hole hidden behind a painting that was hug on the wall - in the bathroom! You could see a copper pipe, drywall, and insulation. The door knob to bathroom was so loose it almost fell off when opening door. The wall paper was separating from the wall leaving a unclean gap to the drywall. In the room clear gift wrapping tape was trying to hold on the wall paper around the Greek columns. We could hardly turn the whirlpool on as the handles were so worn. Black specs on bottom and unclear jet pumps. One of the windows even had a broken glass! List goes on!!

Clearly there has never been a fire inspection done for this facility. Everything is ran by extension cords. Exposed wires and outlets held by duct tape. Luke warm water at best in the tub. Upon check in I showed my receipt where I booked 2 rooms and paid a deposit of half the room total for each room. The hotel had no record of anything being paid (even though I showed receipts) and had to pay in full again for both rooms to even stay there. Rooms were neat, but for the amount they charge a night, it shouldn’t be in the condition it’s in.

We stayed in one of the Roman rooms, the room was fairly clean, but there was still hair in the shower from the previous tenant and the tub had black specks coming out of the jets. Bathroom drawers are screwed shut with drywall screwers through the drawer face.

The room was generally good, but everything in it was very tired and in need of updating. The tv near the bed had a laughable wiring set up that just looked terrible. It was an extension cord ziptied to the wall over a doorway to an outlet.

The staff were helpful when we checked in, but halfway through the stay, our keycard stopped working. I went to the front desk, rang the bell a couple times per the instructions. 5 then 10 minutes go by, nobody shows up. I call the number at the desk, no one answers. I called the hotel's number from the website and must have got one of the managers. He came down within 10 minutes and refreshed my keycard.



Breakfast was the typical continental affair, nothing worth noting.

My shower was in whirlpool tub, I was afraid of slipping, falling and getting out. Hotel room was definitely not worth the money. I'm going to start with - I love the Don Q. I love the kitsch. I love the room sizes. I love that they have theme rooms. That said, there is a battle going on at the Don Q with time - and the Don Q is losing. This is the second time I've stayed and my visits were 6 years apart. In that time, there has been a steady decline in the upkeep of this hotel. Everything is clean, but dated. The carpets need to be replaced or at least stretched. Repairs were made without finish work to try and mask the repairs (patching in the walls without paint, etc). The balloon in the 'up up and away' room was ripped and held together with duct tape. The rooms not in use did not have the climate control running, which led to a musty/mildew smell when they were turned on and attempts were made to mask the smell with heavy perfumes (of which I am allergic). The parking lot needs to be repaved, but I am sure there are no funds for a project of that undertaking. The iconic plane out front is in desperate need of a paint job. The list goes on and on.

It saddens me to write a review like this because, well, I love the Don Q. The staff was super friendly, helpful and responsive to all of our requests. I just think the area has seen a drastic drop in tourism (the number of people at House on the Rock was miniscule) and the income that this icon of Americana needs isn't there.

The pool was large, clean, warm and we could swim between the indoor and outdoor pools. The decor was quirky and really fun. Northern Lights room: Bathroom in room was dirty and the shower was tiny given the size of the room. Layout of room was really awkward and we needed to move chairs to be able to see the TV. Perhaps thinking of a living room setting would be helpful. No eating area in the room. The heater couldn't get into the igloo so it was a bit chilly in there. We had to get another blanket. Main pool area and hot tub were both dirty and Friday it didn't have any towels and none were brought even after we asked. We enjoyed the lobby and upstairs space to play games as we didn't have a table in our room for eating or playing games. Plenty of parking and within minutes of downtown and attractions of the area. Recommend Bob's Bitchin' BBQ!

The room was clean but, dated. Pool are was fine. No issues there. The breakfast was Okay but, not a lot of varieties. The beds were terrible! I honestly don't try to complain but, my husband and I went with my sister and her husband and out of 2 different rooms both having 2 beds, there was not one comfortable bed.
Interesting little place, as long as you're not staying more than 1 night.
The people running it are very nice and they're definitely doing their best with what they have to work with.

It was very clean and smelled clean despite being an older property. It is a treasure to have a place that clean while keeping the 1970s vibe. The loft areas in the upper level were nice and cozy. and we noticed the game room with pool table. I was impressed by the room size (standard room). Very sufficient for our needs and would stay again. Employees were also very nice. I would recommend asking for a first floor because of haulling luggage upstairs.

The whole hot tub/pool area was amazing. Breakfast was good and kept well stocked. The staff were above and beyond. The place does need a little maintance vut overall it added to the quaintness. And the plane out front and her history were very interesting and fun.
