The location is wonderful, right across the street from the ocean. Friendly staff, great breakfast, lovely pool. Complimentary wine, snacks, and water in the room, along with bathrobes and slippers! There is also a bar upstairs by the pool which serves food throughout the day and has entertainment several nights a week. A great hotel and would definitely stay again!

Great hotel. We had a spacious triple room which was clean and had everything we needed. The reception staff were very helpful. Breakfast was ok, the first morning was incredibly busy and staff were not helpful in finding tables for guests or asking people to wait until tables were available, there were many people walking about with breakfast but no table to sit at. The other mornings were less busy so no issues in getting a table at breakfast. The pool area was nice, it could be improved by having the bar open for drinks/snacks. Overall a lovely stay!

The hotel is in a great location and is only a 15 minute walk to the ferries for both Gozo and Valletta. The staff were always very helpful and friendly. The housekeeping was second to none, always cleaned the room and changed the towels every two days.
The breakfast which was included in our package was suitable for everyone with fresh fruit, hot cooked food and plenty of hot drinks.

I think for the price they charge they should leave a couple of bottles of water in your fridge every day. Quite hot and you do a lot of walking on tours, etc. so I don't think you should worry about having to buy water at least a couple of bottles anyway per day.

Best assets of hotel are the location and breakfast. It is right on the seashore, steps to bus stops, restaurants and convenience stores. Breakfast is of good quality and variety with rotating dishes.
Hotel itself looks like one from the 60's, a bit tired looking. Other than breakfast it offers no meal options

This hotel is in desperate need of a renovation! The pictures are very misleading. The lobby had an odor and the furniture was worn and old. The room they gave us had ripped curtains and the bathrobes were so old and worn we did not use them. To top it off, the air conditioner did not work. I had to go to the front desk 3 times before they sent someone to look at it. The maintenance guy reported that it was fine and did we want a fan. No we did not want a fan, we wanted an air conditioner that worked!! The only staff member that seemed to care was the night manager... forgive me I can't remember his name. I think it was Dominic but he was great and moved us
to a bigger room with a working air conditioner. The pool was ok but again, looked nothing like the pictures. The pool towels were old and stained. Guys, time for a replacement!! I will say the breakfast was very good. Great service and lots of variety. It was the best thing about the hotel. The location was on the boardwalk but not alot going on. You could walk to Saint Julien's which was much more lively but if I ever return to Malta I would definitely stay in Valetta. It had the most amazing old town with great restaurants! Overall, I was extremely disappointed with this hotel and would not recommend it.

Travelled to Malta with my wife to visit my 93 year old aunt in a nursing home who was unwell. I deliberately selected the Diplomat for my two night stay because it is very close to the home and as i am being treated for cancer i am only able to walk a short distance. As we needed to go back and forth to the home the Diplomat location suited this and i booked it weeks in advance.
On arrival the manager told me the hotel was full as it had been over booked and we had been relocated to an alternative hotel in St Julian's Bay, some 1.4 miles away. Despite pleading with the manager he insisted there was nothing he could do.
I tried to find another local hotel but there was nothing available. The manager did offer a free taxi to take us to the alternative hotel and as we had no other option we had to take it. We had intended to see my aunt that afternoon but by the time we had checked in it was too late in the evening.
The following day we had to travel by taxi several times back and forth to the home and were unable to see my aunt on our final day, the day of departure due to the distance.
A wholly unacceptable situation and i would never recommend this hotel to anyone.

On the whole this was a pleasant stay with lots of positives. The staff were so very friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much of a problem. Breakfast was great a huge selection and different everyday.
The room was ok...the view was shocking and although the room had balcony it was not useable due to its size.

The room was too warm for and the air con was still set to warm. This was very disappoointing....to be cool i had to open the balcolny door, but that let in lots of noise so overall my sleep quality has been very bad.the noise from the corridor travels very easily into the room.

The Smart TV in the room (and others) are visable to any andriod phone and i had constant people knocking me off to pair their phone as they chose thr wrong tv.

The jacuzzi and sauna were good and nice and clean, although you needed tobook a time slot of use whicht akes away the idea of spontaneous use. Also take your own water with you as there is non provided in there or thr gym.

So yes on the whole a nice visit bit dubious overthe star rating.

The first room we were given was completely run-down, stains on the walls and furniture, mold in the bathroom, broken grout around the tiles, and broken shower holder. The next morning I asked for a different room since I knew (from reading other reviews) that there were newly renovated 3-person rooms. They had the housecleaning manager meet me at my room to walk them through all the things that were wrong (I'm sure they already knew..) and then they put us up in a newly renovated room which was 100x better. It's appalling that they would give anyone the first room, it was SO bad. I will say this place has a great location, you can catch the bus easily to the airport across the street and the ferry to Valletta is a short walk away. The breakfast buffet was ok, people were friendly enough, but also if you're not a british tourist over 65 you might feel a little out of place here like we did (late 30s, early 40s).

We stayed for 8 days as a wind-down from a vigourous Asian holiday and it was perfect. We had a great view of the Sea and fell asleep to the sound of the surf. The bed was very comfortable - with 2 pillows each - and the room was very spacious. We asked for a fix for a cupboard door that was falling off and again when the TV wouldn't turn on, and maintenance was very prompt in fixing both. The breakfast was smazing. We were even offered a \"take-away-breakfast\" when we had to check out at 4 am on our last day.
They have an events desk that lined up aa one day excursion to Gozo Island that was very friendly, informative and helpful. The Terrace on the roof as great, with plenty of seating snd a great view. The pool looked great but, in mid- October, was a bit too cool for our liking. We made use of the lounge chairs, though. Overall, it was a great stay.

Couldn't fault the hotel and staff. This is ours fourth time to the area of Sliema, Malta. Love this area been coming since 2004, but first time sonce 2014. Great for exploring the island most excursions leave from here. Also options for bus , ferry or water taxis across to Valletta. We love the promenade for walks, stopping for refreshments in the many bars and restaurants.

Spacious room with a nice shower.
Breakfast was great with a great variety and tried to change it up everyday which was good.
The hotel should be flexible amd allow guest to check in early if their room is available. We arrived early around 11am, the receptionist did not check if room was ready, he said check in os at 3pm. At 2.30pm, I asked if room was ready but seemed like I was asking for out of this world. Checked in at around 2.50pm.
Apart from that, the rest of our stay was great. We would stay at the diplomat again.

Dated property needs replacement of windows that have moisture between panes. Deck chairs on roof by pool are uncomfortable due to being worn out. Umbrellas missing.
Breakfast is excellent. Restaurant bar makes a good cappuccino. Won’t replace water bottles daily even though you can’t drink the tap water Wouldn’t let us checkin early. Location is good as is sea view room view. Most staff is great!
Didn’t meet expectations overall for 233 euros a night.

I had an issue with the room upon check in but I was promptly taken care of and moved to another room.
The view was great...Seaview...The variety at the Breakfast buffet was very good and large.
The roof top lack a bit. My group and I didnt enjoy people coming to smoke pot. We didnt spend a lot of time there.
I received a bottle of wine as a VIP member but not room upgrade.
All and all everything was good.

We had a nice stay at the Diplomat. Right on the seafront. Didn't get a sea view room but we could still see the sea from our balcony. Nice clean room with complementary slippers and bath robes (bath robes are not for keeps though). Friendly staff. Plenty of options at the included breakfast buffet. There's a bus stop about 30 seconds walk outside and the buses are frequent and easy to use. Just jump on and pay a fixed fee which gives you about two hours of travel. Can't be used for a return journey though, you have to pay again to come back but it's only 2 euros so cheap as chips. Lots of restaurants in walking distance. Also has a spa, a gym and there's a pool and sun terrace on the roof which was deserted both times we went up there so we had it to ourselves. Has everything you want really. Recommend.

There were cockroaches in the breakfast area , our ceiling in our room collapsed and the next room we were given had no air conditioning . Also the rooms are not sound proof at all . Overall a bad experience and I would never suggest it to anyone visiting Malta

The rooftop pool and bar the best part of hotel, it is in a great location next to bus stops and the promenade walk. we just had issues when we missed breakfast and had ordered it the day before for next early morning (2 times made sure it would be there) nobody was around for 15 min at 5:30am. we did get a free bottle of wine from the manager since no refund on breakfast we missed. Also one person mainly there not friendly like all the others.

Check in was at 3pm and could not check in before yet only 1 member of staff on reception at 3pm and therefore a delay in checking in due to queue. Nice room, although the sea view room did not have a balcony as anticipated. Bathroom was clean with lovely toiletries but shower a little small and did not drain well causing us to flood the room on first use. Superb buffet breakfast. Plenty of bars and restaurants within walking distance. Rock beach with opportunity to swim opposite hotel. Pool small with limited loungers but did not cause issue whilst we were there. On bus route to Valletta with frequent buses.

Location is amazing. Super convenient on the Sliema promenade which I loved walking along. Close to restaurants. 15 minute walk to Sliema ferries. Buses take you everywhere.
Disappointed with a few aspects. I only booked for 3 days with intention of staying longer but I ended up changing hotels.
Staff weren’t friendly, only one at breakfast who made the effort to greet hotel guests.
I had water view which was beautiful. But I can’t explain it, I just didn’t love the feeling I had.

Excellent location, quiet , across the beach and close to everything! Very clean courteous staff. Very nice breakfasts! Nice touches like slippers room was big for European standards. The only reservation I have, is that the hotel has a man sitting in the lobby who I assumed was a concierge. I assumed he would give information with no bias and be truthful. Instead he sold his tours and he misrepresented these grossly. I was really upset that the boat tour was supposed so much more very misleading and then really sit on the beach or enjoy boat amenities ) 1 gross bathroom and a hose outside for a shower? He should not be sitting there doing this I would have haves a couple of hundred euros.

We recently stayed at the Diplomat on a last minute booking through Expedia.

Ultimately, we chose this hotel based on its 4 star rating assuming that we would be comfortable for our short and busy stay. We had also considered the Barcelo.

My experience and expectations of a 4 star hotel were not met in this hotel. We booked a standard room and our first room had what I presume to be black mold in the bathroom on the door and ceiling tile and mildew on the windows. As a result it smelled bad. The baseboards were missing pieces and dirty, walls had spots and stains in places, and the furniture was old and in disrepair. I made a complaint to the hotel and the next morning to Expedia. I had paid the hotel in full and felt hostage unless they refunded and allowed us to switch properties.

The hotels staff did reply to our complaint via email and the front desk greeted us when we returned form a day out. They were eager to help us by switching rooms. The first room I was shown on the same floor also had an issue with moisture and mold in the bathroom. They then showed us another room that while still not meeting my expectation of 4 star was an improvement over the other two. The staff was respectful and helpful throughout this process. They offered to help us move and seemed to understand that the issues I had with the hotel were nothing they could change.

The 3 rooms I saw were on par with a Days inn. I expected quality like Marriott, Embassy, or Hyatt which is not accurate

Hot buffet Breakfast would be cold warm due to not being kept hot on the Bain marie servery.

Noise was due to building works being carried out directly outside.

All staff were polite and courteous but the front of house manager i forget their names (sorry) one was Male and female who were very warm, friendly but also helpful with practical issues about timeframes, access to facilities and concern of taxi arriving which in the end did without a problem but they offered up alternative solution just in case.
So thankyou to all the staff who made the stay enjoyable, they have such a lovely beautiful and blessed country.

Location involves a certain amount of walking - or bus - to St. Julian's Bay or Sliema Ferry, but it is much quieter and pleasanter than its equivalent-quality hotels. Nearby restaurants offer good food at fair prices

We stayed for 4 nights in 2 rooms.
Definitely a low rated 3* hotel, absolutely not a 4*.
Good: location in Sliema. On the sea, near a convenience store and near the Ferry to Valetta. On the main bus routes too.
Pool was nice on the roof top, and the spa was open to shower after check-out.
Bed was comfortable and our rooms were clean.
Shower pressure was great with good products to use.Breakfast did the job and there was a large choice.
Bad:
No exaggeration, the air-conditioning sounded like a diesel generator inflating a bouncy castle, yet its output was abysmal. It did slightly cool the room compared to the outdoors, but only slightly and the room was still uncomfortably hot to sleep in (not 15*c as per the dial).
The biggest issue, however, was that EVERYTHING was damp. Our clean clothing in suitcases became damp, paper shopping bags, even chewing gum! Both rooms suffered this damp and we've no idea why. The shower rooms have an automatic extractor fan and we always showered with doors closed.
The furniture is very old, and the wardrobe door needed wrestling with to open (probably because the wood was damp).
The bath was stained yellow and the suite was obviously really old.
The tap water is yellow so do not drink it!
The pool bar ice creams were extortionately priced at €4.50...which was weird as this was the cost of a lunch baguette too.
Overall the bad didn't ruin our holiday, but we couldn't wait to check out, fly home and do our laundry!
Will not return to this hotel.

Classy and great location

Great pool, pool area and terrace overseeing amazing views of the sea. Room was spacious and shower was great. Brilliant selection at all you can eat buffet. Sliema promenade right on your doorstep and many, many restaurants and shops nearby. Only downsides with the hotel would be the pool terrace bar wasn’t functioning. You could purchase from the hotel bar, but you’d be required to take the lift 8 floors each way every time you did so. Think the hotel are losing out on some income there. Location wise only downside is how busy it is, you’re central and you’ll hear fireworks, many a car beeping it’s never really quiet. But not as busy/loud as St. Julian a short walk away. Heard some describe the region as being like Blackpool with the sun, which is kinda accurate even if somewhat derogatory. A lot of the area under construction and weirdly every second building seems to be available to buy or rent or is a realtor office. Which doesn’t give you the biggest holiday feel it has to be said. So just know that before you go. But back to positives, all staff at the hotel great, from reception to bar staff to housekeeping to wait staff at breakfast. If you’re wanting to do to Malta and looking for plenty within walking distance and okay with a bit of hustle and bustle rather than a quiet area, then this hotel is highly recommended.

Probably one of the worst price to ratio hotels i

This hotel has to be one of the worst in terms of price-to-quality ratio that I've ever experienced.

I don't usually complain, but seriously, you can easily find places that are 50% cheaper and offer the same subpar conditions, if not better, in the same area.

Let me list my complaints:
1. I booked a two-day stay, but the air conditioning was broken, leaving me with either stuffy, humid air or no ventilation at all. As a result, I developed a cough, most likely due to the hotel's poor air quality.

2. The service during check-in was abysmal. The guy in his 30s who greeted me seemed like he despised his job and couldn't care less about providing good service.

3. The bathroom was in terrible condition. The shower had yellow stains embedded in it, and the tap was dysfunctional, making it impossible to control the water flow.

And you might think I'm just nitpicking, but no. I raised my concerns with the staff, and it was only on the second day, in the afternoon, that a helpful staff member managed to provide me with a fan.

But seriously, paying a few hundred euros for something this awful? I'd rather stay in a hostel, where at least I can expect the quality to be quite bad.

Disappointing Diplomat.

Booked a room with partial sea view, given room at the back of the hotel and Diplomat did not change as they were fully booked and said this was room boked (it stated partial sea view)

I was also due a Bottle of wine as I am a Silver Member and this was a perk, I received a miniture bottle of red that was half full. Told by the hotel that thisnis what they offer.

Cleaners where fantastic and cleaned room everyday, toilet had a leak, shower was poor and the bathroom was tiny, struggle to get between door and sink.

Overall not happy with the room and the poor Silver Membership reward. I dont think I will stay at the Diplomat again, its a nice hotel in a good location, but this experience has not left a goodnimpression on me.

Friendly and helpful staff

The hotel is great, we really enjoyed the view from the roof terrace. Unfortunately it was still a bit cold to use the roof swimming pool but it was open.
The staff was amazing, very friendly and always helpful especially Anthonella and Dimitry at reception and also room service ladies.
The breakfas variety was great, nice cooked breakfas, continental, pastries and fruits. Good choice from drinks too.
The location of the hotel is great too, beachbin front and good bus service, even directly to the airport.

This was our first stay at the Diplomat, from the moment we got to reception at the start of our trip the staff were so friendly and nothing was too much trouble, our room was clean and every day housekeeping popped in to make bed etc, breakfast had a large variety of food and you could even sit on the terrace outside their bar,The Old Vic, both staff members of the bar are amazing, we will definitely be going back soon,highly recommend this hotel 🙂

Fantastic view to the sea, but with some issues...

Hotel well located, facing the sea, with ease of transport, restaurants, cafes, etc. Small and shy reception, but with very polite and helpful staff. It is not a 4* hotel, but a 2.5 or a 3* at the most, without decoration or amenities for this category, old and heavy furniture, old towels (see picture). Good breakfast, but the products are very bad: pastries, coffees, juices, hams and cheeses and breads of much inferior quality. The pool was not used due to the cold weather, but it looks good to me. I would recommend this hotel, but with those remarks.

Perfectly located on Sliema seafront the Diplomat provided the ideal base for a nostalgic week in Malta. Straightforward check in (you pay for your stay up front on arrival) comfortable spacious room that is well serviced and a hearty self serve buffet breakfast. No frills but economical and enjoyable.

Ok stay in a centrallocation

Generally good, Room was ok, comfort was ok, cleaning was ok, bfast was a great selection but much prefered the late continental breakfast option. Drinks were a typical hotel kings ransom. Position was good. Roof pool and terrace was nice. Not a 4star by UK standards.

Overall, great location. I had an issue with my door where it wasn’t locking and no deadbolts from inside. They weren’t able to fix it the evening I arrived so I had to move rooms after already unpacking. I wasn’t offered any comps even though I was moved to a suite at the far back of the hotel vs ocean side. They were going to move me back that day once the door was fixed. I left early the next morning for a tour and was called halfway through the day by reception to see if they could move the items from the safe and keep them at front desk until I got back or could I come back earlier. I didn’t feel comfort with either option and so was met with an argument from reception - I mean surely they could have figured something else out ? As others had said not quite a typical 4 star but good enough and great location. Breakfast had a lot of
Options. Go for an Oceanside view/room.

The room smelt like someone had been smoking in it. We received 1 bottle of water on arrival and stayed 3 nights. We asked for another bottle of water and we were asked to pay for it. Then when checking out we asked to not be charged for it and the poor lady at reception had to ask her manager if it was okay. All for one bottle of water. Ridiculous you get 1 bottle of water for 3 nights for 2 people. They ended up not charging us for it but it was an ordeal.

A very happy stay at the Diplomat

The hotel was really good. Very well located and the staff were so friendly and helpful. I could not say enough about the staff.
The room was lovely. The bed was comfortable. Fridge, tea making facilities, air-conditioning and TV.
We had a small balcony view of the street and sea.
A very minor issue was the lack of Toilet Paper.
Overall I would recommend the hotel and would definitely return.

A Huge Disappointment !

My husband & I were traveling to Malta for the 1st time with a friend and we booked the Diplomat for the sea view and Sliema location. The a/c did not appear functional in either room but the mgr told us to give it time. We left for a few hrs but it was no better. The mgr said the a/c in our room was broken and moved us to another room but it was still no better. We asked for fans & they brought us fans with blades that were filthy. When we returned from dinner, there were little black bugs on the white comforter and in the bathroom. The night mgr tried to tell us that the temperature was good and that we were expecting too much. In the morning we told them that we just could not stay without proper a/c. They charged us for the 1st night but did allow us to cancel the remainder of the stay without penalty. Interestingly, I forgot my medicine in the 1st room and then I went to retrieve it, I found that they had already put another guest in the room even though they said the a/c was broken!

A nice stay at The Diplomat

A very nice stay at The Diplomat Hotel, it is located directly opposite the sea and you can get a great view from the rooftop swimming pool on the 8th floor. The rooms were a nice size with comfortable beds and although our bathroom was a bit small we didn’t mind. The breakfast had a wide choice and staff were very friendly. The manager George was very good and ensured that guests had everything they needed.

Hotel very clean and comfortable. Suitable for our 5 night city break. Reasonable decor. Decent choices for continental or full English breakfast but not always served warm enough . Would improve experience if tea / coffee was served at the tables.
Rooms comfortable with tea/coffee making amenities and bar fridge. Hair dryer on bathroom wall very very weak. Bring your own.
Pool to cool off in on rooftop and loungers... Nice rooftop bar and snacks served with sea views.
Receptionist was helpful and kindly stored our luggage as we arrived very early, on departure she printed out my boarding passes and arranged a taxi to airport.
Bus stop 3 minutes walk away. We got a travel bus pass for €21 / 7days unlimited public transport travel. Kat W. H. Smith arrivals Hall, Malta Airport.
Went to mdina (beautiful, go late afternoon then have dinner in one of the lovely cafes hidden away in the narrow streets) ) . St Julian Bay(lively /young..) Valletta (restaurants/pubs/shops/churches/history/pedestrian only centre) . Three cities (returned to Valletta on a little water taxi boat.. Very relaxing experience).. Etc
Can use it on Gozo as well.
It hit 42 degrees while we were exploring Mdina.... Hats and sunscreen needed.

Location amazing but hotel is the worst one there!

The hotel states it has been fully renovated and so we thought all the rooms were too. However when we got to our room it wasn’t done in time so we had to wait. Upon going to our room the door was a hazard to access the room and the bathroom was in the 1960s old movies. And only the eight floor has the renovated rooms. This hotel is deceiving they need to state which rooms have been renovated and which haven’t. Otherwise I definitely would not have stayed here. Plus the room constantly stank and so did the sheets which resulted in me putting perfume on the bed before sleeping.
