The room was clean but there was no coffee machine in the room. English is not widely spoken which makes communication difficult. The pool area is great, however, the system for getting drinks at the pool is not efficient. You tap your wrist band to get a drink and then have to sign a chit later. I waited one and a half hours to sign the chit that was never presented to me at the pool. The hotel was accommodating in arranging a late check out due to a change in my travel plans.

Great hotel and great breakfast. Room was clean and comfortable. Beach right across the street. A little bit out of town which makes it slower and quite but main attractions are about a $8-10 uber ride...get uber which is cheaper than taxis. Overall, highly recommend but if you're looking for night life, stay in town at the main beach area.

I loved my stay at Hotel Nacional, especially the value for money.

Features:
- Expansive Rooms (30 floors)
- Marble Bathroom
- Room Service (5am-11pm)
- Excellent Spa (ocean & lush forest views)
- Rooftop Fine Dining (at Masi Restaurant)
- Large Breakfast Buffet (until 10:30am)
- Blackout Curtains

Only Complaints:
- Soaps not premium
- Air Conditioning sometimes limited midday
- Wi-Fi sometimes spotty
- Service felt personalized, but not effortless

In the end, I didn’t want to leave the hotel! I would definitely stay again.

The room was terrible. The sheets were not clean, and we were expected to pay for ice. Complimentary water was not provided. The breakfast was horrible and not worth offering. The staff did not attempt to speak our language, which made communication very difficult. The room itself was not clean, and to make matters worse, the cleaning staff entered the room without asking or receiving permission. Overall, it was a very uncomfortable and unpleasant experience.

La estadía fue muy buena, el hotel es enorme tiene muchas habitaciones, el desayuno está correcto, lo mejor es la ubicación cerca de todo ( no caminable ) pero si a pocos minutos de Uber. Pocas sillas y sombrillas en la playa pero si vas temprano te aseguras, sino podes alquilar al lado. La vista desde la habitación es un sueño, súper amplia. Muchas actividades para chicos y una piscina animada con música y barra.

Room cleaning will not attend unless you txt/call and ask them to clean .AC was warm, had to ask to change the room . New room AC will not operate in auto mode ( manual off and on ) Pool turn into a Barbecue party , smoke covered all pool area . I have been more than 4 times in this hotel . Unfortunately this was my last . Hotel downgraded . I wouldn’t give 3 stars to this place . Masi top roof restaurant still nice 😊

We arrived to a room that was spacious and mostly acceptable — but also extremely hot. We assumed it was because the room hadn’t been occupied, we turned on the AC, and headed out for dinner at MASI.

When we returned later that evening, the room was still uncomfortably hot. We reported it, and maintenance changed the filter and told us to request a room change if it didn’t cool within a few hours. By the next morning — and again when we returned around 6 p.m. — the room was still hot.

When we went back to the front desk to request a different room, we were told the hotel was overbooked and there were no alternatives. We were repeatedly encouraged to have maintenance return instead, even after explaining they had already been there. Only after about 45 minutes of insisting did a manager finally agree to move us — despite there supposedly being “no rooms available.”

The new room (same category) was noticeably better: cooler, cleaner, and equipped with additional amenities like robes, shower dispensers, bath bubbles, and glass doors. This made it very clear the first room should not have been assigned to guests at all.

Overall, the service response was disappointing, and the situation could have been handled much more proactively. The property has potential — but guests deserve rooms that meet the listed standard and issues addressed without resistance.The issue wasn’t just the heat — it was the unwillingness to address a legitimate problem. We should not need to argue.

The pool area was quite small for such a grand hotel. There were too many kids in the pools, splashing and thrashing around with the pool floats (noodles). If you do not get there in time, you will not find a beach chair to sit. They provide only one towel per key card. On the beach, you have to pay for chairs and umbrellas (the hotel does not provided that). The room was clean but minimal towels (you had to ask for extra). Our iron was burnt so they brought a new one with no issues. My birthday night (12/22) was a disaster. The hotel had let an entire outside group of about 100+ people rent out the lobby for a private party which prevented the hotel guest from enjoying any of the services offered (lounge bar, beach access, etc) and all they did was say I'm sorry. Also, they do not allow you to eat any outside food in the lobby. They instructed us to go to our room (which we could not because we had already checked out) or go outside (like pets). I did not appreciate that at all. We literally got told by multiple staff that we were not allowed to eat our food inside even though we had explained to them that we were waiting for our taxi to the airport which was coming in like 20 min. After spending a significant amount of money on this trip, I was extremely disappointed in my stay here and I would never stay here again. I would not recommend.

Room was spotless. View from the room was incredible. Staff was extremely friendly and hospitable. Server Gabriel was an incredible person and really made my girlfriend’s birthday extra special. The guest services staff was able to arrange the room for my girlfriend’s birthday with balloons and decorations to give her an incredible surprise. I 100% recommend this property for any occasion and will 100% be coming back!

Excellent Stay with Just a Few Suggestions:

We had a wonderful experience at Hotel Nacional Rio de Janeiro. The hospitality was great — the staff were very friendly and welcoming. Our room on the 16th floor had a stunning view overlooking both the ocean and the mountains, which made our stay even more special.

The breakfast buffet offered a wide range of choices, including fresh fruits, pastries, and even live music on the weekend, which created a lovely atmosphere. I would suggest adding a few toasters for bread and warmers for eggs, as well as including some options for guests with dietary needs such as lactose intolerance.

The outdoor pool area was very clean and enjoyable, and having direct access to the beach was a big plus. The lobby was beautifully decorated with plenty of comfortable seating — a great place to relax.

A few small things could be improved. There was no tea/coffee maker in the room, which is unusual for hotels of this category. We visited the on-site coffee shop instead, but the cup sizes were very small for the price. It would also be nice if the hotel offered at least one complimentary bottle of water upon arrival, especially for longer-stay guests like us. Additionally, aside from the reception team, staff generally didn’t speak English, which made communication a bit challenging at times.

Overall, we truly enjoyed our stay and the beautiful location. With just a few improvements, this hotel could easily move from excellent to exceptional.

The hotel is amazing with beautiful views. Everything is very clean. We have a mountain view that was breathtaking and the beach was litterally right across the street. I wish the pool area played better music as the music they played were from the 1950s-1970s. No pool activities but the heated pool was a nice touch especially when it was cooler outside. Breakfast was also very good with lots of variety along with an omlette bar. Overall the hotel exceeded expectations

This stay was very nice. I would definitely come here again. One thing I wasn’t too fond of was I asked the front desk to clean the floors because something had spilled and they did not mop the floors like I asked, but the beach near the hotel was very nice. The food at the hotel was very good. The breakfast was phenomenal. It was a bit out the way from everything in Rio, like Copacabana and the touristy things but very chill if you’re looking for that vibe.

10% of the staff was OK Erica is the one that spoke some English and help me check in, but the rest of the staff was very disrespectful and rude. I don’t think they’re no proper etiquette to assist tourist or clients and guess it was very difficult to talk And there was misunderstandings and some arguing with respect to certain things in Hotel people I’m not trained. that was the biggest issue otherwise Hotel was not bad. It was clean, but they should get there staff together.

I stayed at Hotel Nacional from August 14–21 and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. I usually try not to bring up race, but I can’t shake the feeling that some of what I experienced was racially motivated.

On my first night, the concierge at the front desk was extremely rude and aggressive. She demanded my papers and documents in a very harsh way, and when I calmly confronted her about her tone, she became even more belligerent. No one offered to help with bags, which was surprising for a hotel advertised as 5 stars.

The hotel itself was also not as advertised. The rooms were just average at best, with noticeable stains on the carpet. Room service is listed as 24 hours, but most of the time no one answered the phone. On top of that, the atmosphere of the hotel felt uncomfortable — almost as if I was being watched constantly. Staff frequently delayed or questioned me and my guest, asking repeatedly for my room number, which made me feel like I didn’t belong there. I also noticed them chatting amongst themselves after interactions, which only added to the uncomfortable feeling.

Overall, this hotel does not live up to a 5-star rating. My trip to Brazil was unfortunately altered because of my stay here. Of course, everyone’s experience may differ, but I wanted to provide an honest account of mine

The hotel was lovely however there is a real issue with sanitation and waste. The bathrooms and elevators and floors where the rooms are had a terrible odor. But the location of the hotel excellent! This is definitely not a 5 star. 3-4. Food was good but the selection was the same every day! There is no coffee after hours and no coffee machines in the roams. They really should have a coffee station in the main lobby at the very least. The staff were pleasant very helpful. Security was great and we felt safe! If you’re visiting Rio for the first time this is a great place to stay!

Hotel is located in a mostly residential area therefore the surroundings are not as lively as other areas like Ipanema and Copacaba. For us it was ideal since we were travelling with kids. We always felt very safe, even when walking outside at night. The staff was very friendly and attentive. Everything was helpful. They have a top rated bar tender, I forgot his name now, but he makes some amazing drinks. The rooms were clean, our suite was huge, and the views from the room were amazing. Breakfast was tasty a a huge selection. I wold definetely stay again if back in Rio.

This property was amazing. The amenities exceeded my expectations. You have options for food, property close enough to major areas such as sugar loaf mountain, Christ the Redeemer, selaron steps etc. The room is big and spacious, even though I didn’t have ocean view the views of the mountains were beautiful. The staff were friendly and everyone knew a little English which made it easier. I only have good things to say about this hotel. Oh and the price didn’t break the bank. I will definitely go back.
