Our room was too small, had a only single chair, no desk, no luggage rack, a very rusty shower curtain bar, no grab bar in the bath area, and no heat or air conditioning control. In addition the clerk was dismissive and unintelligible in her attempt to communicate.

Very quiet, perfect for my short getaway, so peaceful! My second floor room was tucked away and LOVED the large cushy reading chair and ottoman. A/C super quiet! Bed was very comfortable (the pillows were like baby belugas so if you prefer a flatter pillow bring one?). Enjoyed the pool once the weather cooperated, nice and secluded.
Suzanne (house manager) is so nice and very accommodating. I’d love to make a return visit!

Beautiful spot. It would be nice if front desk help knew more about the area and if it had more pamphlets and maps on what to do.
A light breakfast would be nice as the attached French restaurant was only open at night.

We liked the areas for sitting outside, to sit with a coffee, talk and relax. It was convenient to have a fridge. A very different accommodation but typical for the island. We enjoyed our stay!

Stayed here during the off-season (late October) on a mother-daughter get-away. The staff was very sweet and upgraded us to a larger room as we were the only folks in the place on our first night. The room however was a little tired (grungy couch) and the bed had to be 3.5 ft off the ground, which was very difficult for my mother to climb into. We asked for a step stool and were given the two-step fold up step ladder that the on site handy man uses. Additionally - the take-away breakfast was just...not edible. I understand covid makes things difficult, but for the price (expensive even in off season) - I was expecting a higher level of amenity and accommodation. The bathroom was really nice though!

Ask if there’s a wedding

Booked for my fiancé birthday we found out upon arrival the entire place was booked for a wedding and was restricted to using most outside areas all day Saturday. Everywhere we tried to move to was occupied by wedding events and the family members openly asked us why we were even at hotel. Very awkward.

Shelter island house is very clean- comfortable and staff was welcoming and friendly and very helpful - we would love to come back -breakfast was fresh French miniatures pastries served in the safest way- a delight!

Very nice stay. Rooms need to have sanitize glass or at least a cup so you can have a sip of water when needed. Explanation was due to Covid. Bar said they were open to eight they were closed at 10 to 7, not a welcoming gesture when of course the restaurant was closed due to Covid and couldn’t even get a water....

Relaxing with friendly staff

We enjoyed our stay at the Shelter Island House despite it not being 100% operational due to COVID. We missed having a restaurant on site for a real breakfast but they did provide coffee, pastries, yogurt, etc. which was very nice. The staff was very friendly and accommodating and the pool area was small but pretty and relaxing. Despite being fully booked the weekend of our stay it was still nice and quiet and mellow. Our room was clean and well equipped although the bed is a bit hard for my comfort level. Also it was a quick walk to the beach which was a plus. Would definitely return.

Could Have Been Better

We were expecting some things wouldn’t be as smooth given the ongoing COVID-19 situation but there were a few things that could have been done better given the price of the hotel:

1. There was only one breakfast option available each day (pastries) for pickup in a bag each morning
2. The restaurant was closed but we had been informed that a food truck would be available for lunch and dinner, however, we only saw it open once while we were there
3. Be warned that you need a car on Shelter Island because there were no taxis and no shuttle service is provided by the hotel

Other than that, the hotel is in good condition and provides a nice setting within walking distance of the small town and Crescent Beach.

Hotel in desperate need of renovation. Well located with a nice pool but incredibly basic. Needs a lot ofTLC. Staff are obviously summer placements and speak very basic English. No drinks or food available until 4pm. Beds uncomfortable. Needs investment!

Fantastic!!

Incredibly hospitable. We were the only guests in the hotel that night as it was an off peak trip. They upgraded our room to a suite! Impeccably clean room. Mattress was so comfortable. Had a lovely, reasonably priced dinner and a few cocktails in the bar lounge area. In the morning coffee, tea, delicious croissants and juice were laid out for us. Very happy with our stay, will return!!!

I was overcharge $111! I've been trying to contact the hotel, filed a claim/dispute with my bank, there was no reciept/reason given for this extra charge. Crazy, never had any problem like it!

Quaint Inn that offers quality service and provides some delightful rooms. Our stay was right at the end of the season so the restaurant was closed but it was a perfect fit for our stay and what we wanted to accomplish which was to have a relaxing extended weekend.

Very quiet hotel, but very cute. We were late to check-in and our key was left at the front for us, it is that secure. Room was nice, thank goodness for the window a/c unit because it was quite humid. Morning breakfast was small but a plus, croissants were delicious. If you are looking for a quiet special getaway to unwind, this is the place.

Shelter Island House owner seems overwhelmed !

The location on idyllic Shelter Island is just great, near famed Sunset Beach-
hidden on a nice quiet back road, very peaceful setting, and quite comfortable Inn .!
However I was very disappointed the restaurant - described in the online listing ;
was closed for renovation -during my stay; since I booked that particular Inn ;
due to the great convenience of on site dining ; choices are limited on this tiny island.
There was construction noise and commotion when I arrived; but the owner
was less than apologetic and frankly just seemed rather distracted.
She had the audacity to confront me in a most awkward fashion ; without
introducing herself as the Inn Keeper; shortly after I checked in for 2 nights;
Shelter Island House was the 10th online booking ;during my recent coastal trip-
but this was the only place I stayed at where I was not shown the level of
respect and welcoming attitude from the Inn Keeper that all guests deserve.

The inn was beautiful and comfortable. It's grounds are pretty and it's on Shelter Island which is almost like a trip to New England - old, elegant, small town feel. The room was comfortable and attractive. Breakfast was quite disappointing, but perhaps will improve as their dining facility opens.

Hotel was convenient and had a nice relaxed atmosphere. Seems to be about the best deal on Shelter Island. Can't comment on much else as I was visiting the Island for work and literally spent most of my time at the hotel asleep!

Friendly staff, horrible bedding

Booked a room here for 2 nights. We were running late on the first day so I called that evening to confirm we could check in late (10pm). There was no answer and found no “front desk” hours on the voicemail or online. I understand not having a full staff considering it’s a small 10 room hotel, but the hours should be listed somewhere. We arrived at the hotel the next morning to a very welcoming staff member. Spent the day exploring the island. By the evening we were exhausted and wanted to relax and get a good nights rest. The beds however were so uncomfortable my wife and I repeatedly woke up during the night. At one point I was convinced it’d be more comfortable to sleep in the back seat of our car. Glad we missed out on the first night now. Will not stay again.

Wonderful and Charming Hotel

We stayed here during the off season and were the only guests in the hotel on a monday night. Staff and property owner were very friendly! We got upgraded to a King Suite because we were the only people staying there. Restaurant opens year round and the bar was actually full on a monday night with local island people for the Giants Game. Room and Jacuzzi tub were amazing! We will definitely be back during the summer. It a short walk to Sunset Beach Bar!

Very dissapointed with Shelter Island House

Staff service dismal at best.

At breakfast on 10-31-2016, staff member sitting in dining area facing the garden with her nose pinned to her cell phone. As I entered I greeted her with a cheerful \"Good morning\" which she barely acknowledged and then told me to sit in the other section of the dinning area facing the parking area, which wasn't set up for breakfast. I let her know politely that I preferred to sit facing the garden with the morning sun streaming through the window.

I asked for decaffienated coffee as none was available, she then pointed to a curtain that apparently had a coffee machine that had no coffee made, so she said she would make some.
I had barely sat back in my seat when she presented me with a cup of coffee which was Luke warm, so I went back to ask for fresh decaf coffee, she then told me there wasn't any decaf coffee and I \"needed to drink regular coffee\".

I told her that I can't drink regular coffee because I get heart palpitations, she sat down and ignored me.

Considering the rates charged at Shelter house I think it would be nice to supply a box of tissues in the rooms and to have coffee and tea making facilities available as well as an iron and ironing board which is now standard in any hotel you go to. You should not have to ask to be provided with these basic requirements.

At the very LEAST provide decaffienated coffee to your customers and educate the staff as to the importance of NOT giving regular coffee to someone who has asked for DECAF

Beautiful hotel, surrounded by nature

We went there off season, so i could not talk about the property when completely booked. The location is gorgeous, the hotel is bright, surrounded by gardens, woods and a beautiful beach a block away. We loved our room which faced the pool. Even though it was the middle of October it got a little too warm, since the sun shone into it most of the day. This could be a plus or an issue, depending on what you like. Bathrooms are clean and well equipped, no in-room coffee maker but it is available downstairs since early morning - and it is really good. Breakfasts are no frills, toast, pastries, cereal, fruit and yogurt. There isn't really anything wrong with this place, but it does feel more like an inn than a hotel.
Beds could be more comfortable, they are the old type spring frame ones, they are creaky and somewhat uncomfortable.

Dejligt sted at slappe af. Man oplever ro, og tiden går sin egen stille gang.rigtig god morgenmad, god bar, super venlig betjening og personale, men når forretterne er rigtig gode, så mangler hovedretterne altså en del i at leve op til resten af opholdet.
