Honestly? This hotel kinda ate. Staff was super sweet, the room and bathroom were spacious, and the lobby is low-key adorable with tons of seating. Plus there’s a coffee shop and an ice cream bar in the lobby, and a couple little stores and an ATM right next door.

However, the air conditioner was only blowing warm air, which made the room uncomfortable, the shower space is tiny, and the coffee shop opens way too late (like please, bare minimum is 6am).

Additionally, the surrounding area offers limited walkability; most shops, restaurants, and landmarks are only accessible by car or rideshare.

I had a pleasant stay at the Grand Mercure Beijing Central. The staff provided excellent service, and the lobby was charming and well-maintained. My room was comfortable and thoughtfully arranged.

However, the air-conditioning only produced warm air, making the room less comfortable, and there were no options for a hot coffee available around 6 a.m.

Overall, a lovely hotel with great service and atmosphere, but improvements to air-conditioning and early-morning amenities would enhance the experience.

When I arrived the front desk staff, particularly Frank was excellent at helping me with an issue I was having. He went out of his way to help me, even calling a few people on my behalf. The hotel location was very convenient, easy walking to two subways and multiple bus lines.

No bar - had one in the lobby but it’s closed.
You can relax only in the noisy restaurant - not good.
reasonably good location. On the map it looks close to Tiananmen and Forbidden city, but scale is deceiving. Was much further than we anticipated.

National Day Chaos

The location is great and so was the room but because of National Day, we had to leave the hotel very sudden one day earlier than expected. We just found a note laying on the floor saying that the road and nearby MRT stations would be closed off. We originally had to check out on ND and after we got the note and went to speak with an employee, we where told I wasn’t possible due to the closure. We therefor abruptly had to pack our bags and find another hotel outside of the city center. We were promised the money back for that last night within 2/3 days but haven’t received anything yet.

I was disappointed by this property with respect to two key areas: (1) The main restaurant on 2nd floor for breakfast, lunch and dinner was mediocre at best. Food was cold, poor quality, The quality of the food was poor and not appetizing at all. Note, the restaurant on the 3rd floor was good, had dinner there twice and found it very good, fresh and flavorful; (2) We reserved a non-smoking room however stepping out of the elevator onto the floor our room was on (10th) all we could smell was the smell of cigarette smoke in the hallways and this smell was present in our room as well (not as strong as the hallways).

Very good stay. Good location Big and clean room. Big twin beds. Very near to 2 subway stations - Xidan and Xuanwumen. We walked to Xidan shopping area, Tiananmen and Forbidden city. Heated pool 29deg and jacuzzi 40deg. Must wear swimming cap or shower cap if use the pool.

Hotel well located close to shopping mall

Checkout time is noon. On my last day I had a day tour to the Great Wall. Therefore I had to checkout early in the morning before going on Tour and a flight to catch in the evening. The staff has kept my luggage and once back from my day tour has allowed me to use the facilities in the swimming pool to have a shower get changed prior heading to the airport. Although officially I was no longer a guest at the hotel having checked out in the morning. This extra service makes all the difference and I have no hesitation to recommend it to anyone and to return to GM on my next trip to Beijing.

This hotel is the perfect location for exploring the city centre. Only a 15 minute walk to the closet shopping mall where there is a variety of shops and western food as well as more traditional food eateries for local cuisine.
The staff were friendly and despite over an hours wait for the room, it was a comfortable base with excellent room service each day.
A great hotel, would highly recommend.

Wrong Location of the hotel on Apple Maps

Don't go by the location on the map. From the Xuanwumen subway station, take exit B2 and turn right (towards Xi Dan). The hotel is located at about 400m, on your right-hand side. The hotel staff barely speaks English. It is safe to have the addresses and some essential phases translated into Chinese.

Outside looking of the hotel not so great but inside is so beautiful. We felt so welcomed on arrival Oct 2/17 [don't know if it was because of national week] all staffs in the lobby were so friendly, helpful, professional & pleasant. We were surprise by the manager who even tried to help us to move our luggage to our room when bell boy was busy. They upgraded our premium room to executive room which was very quiet [good sound proof], newly renovated & spacious. Buffet breakfast was excellent. Good quality control by manager checking during breakfast time. Housekeeper was so nice & pleasant. The only thing I can pick on was the mattress were little bit worn out so up with some backache every morning. Few mins walk to 1 subway station, another subway close by, walking distance to few big department stores. Whats app is blocked in Beijing but We chat works.

Nice spacious hotel, although not very convenient.

Despite being in between two metro stations, that's where the conveniences end of this hotel location. There is no convenience stores anywhere nearby at all, unless you want a drink of a piece of fruit, that's about all you can find nearby. If you walk about 15 minutes up towards the shopping strip you will find McDonalds, KFC, Pizza hut and lots of clothes, shoe shopping etc. As for the hotel itself, nice and spacious, my room was quite large and quiet, air con worked really well and facilities were mostly clean and modern besides a strain on the bench/seat near the entry. Housekeeping tied up my phone charger cables in a nice little loop every morning which was a nice touch and the room was always cleaned well. Bed was comfortable and lots of powerpoints and decent TV.

Sometimes we felt the staff could not cope with the number of guests. The breakfast buffet was empty much of the time (no juice, tea or coffee). The restaurant had many items unavailable from its menu and when we returned a glass of corked white wine, the server poured it back into the bottle. It was however a nice hotel, clean and not a bad location within walking distance of the underground.

Mercure Hotel in Beijing

We were greeted by the people in the front desk who did not speak much english. That did not bother me as much as their insistence that I needed a visa to enter China. This was absurd because I had already been to Shanghai before arriving in Beijing. The front desk was completely flabbergasted and confused that my country does not require a visa for entering China. To this day I am wildly confused why my Visa status is of any concern to the hotel. When we were asking to speak with the manager, they kept saying he was in a meeting...which was a lie. Instead of the front desk asking me to wait while they call the embassy or check the official website, I was told they were going to call the police. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt and say that things got lost in translation, that they were not going to call the actual police. That said, it does not take away the fact that this was my first impression of the hotel and its staff. After this debacle, we were given our room key but we were not informed about wifi passwords, meal times, meal locations, fitness center availability, or any other basic information you give your guests. It was disappointing, but the front desk's lack of friendliness stood out to me the most.

The Grande Mercure Goes Above & Beyond

When I arrived I had been under the weather for several days. The check-in was quick and painless and the service desk arranged my transportation for the following morning. Upon arriving in the room the bed had been turned down, slippers laid out and there was a lovely plate of dessert & macaroons and a fruit basket. I will definitely be staying here on my next trip to Beijing.

The most average hotel of our 3 weeks in China, stayed at some lovely places this one wasn't great to be honest and cost more than some lovely little boutique hotels. First night there asked about nearby food places, went to discover they shut at 9.30pm (we were sent after then) and went back to the hotel to be told they stopped serving food but could order room service. Ordered room service to discover they were out of stock of what we ordered, got a cold pizza delivered an hour later still frozen. Leaving on the last day we asked for a taxi to take us to the airport and the hotel said no problem, however it was 20 minutes late and still no taxi so we walked outside and we flagged one from outside ourselves fine.

Completely unusable internet detracts from an otherwise nice hotel

The hotel is very nice overall, but the internet was unusable.

The hotel location is nice, the room was clean and comfortable, and the swimming pool was good. The internet though, was completely unusable most of the time through my entire stay, with or without VPN. I have been to other hotels in China that have slow connection to foreign countries, but this is the first time in a long time that I had slow connection to Chinese sites. My VPN service (that works just fine outside the hotel) was cut off every few minutes, and when it was connected it was extremely slow.

I hope the hotel can fix the internet issue because otherwise I cannot foresee myself coming back, nor recommend this hotel to my colleagues, despite the rest of the stay being very good.

This hotel brought in workmen on the weekend who spent the whole day drilling in the room right above my head. Calls to the front desk did not result in them stopping the drilling or moving me to another room, or apologizing, or refunding or discounting, or doing much of anything beyond shrugging. In short, not only are they trying to rent out rooms and refurbish the hotel simultaneously, management is indifferent to guests' comfort as a matter of general principle.

I would come back anytime. The location is great; really close to the train station and nearby a lot of nice and cheap restaurants. I am quiet happy with the quality of the hotel service. I just subtracted a star because of the cleaning lady, that was not really nice. But I was very happy with all the other staff. They were very very nice and spoke good english. The condition of the hotel, is pretty new, but unfortunately people before me damaged some of the furniture. My room was very very comfy. I felt very good in it and could relax and take my mind off a lot of things. The price of the hotel is good as well. I loved the fact that I had my breakfast included. They also have a great working out place in the basement. I just can recommend this place to anyone. :o) Because I would def. come back. Thank you for the wonderful staying.

The hotel sounded at a great location and I had a pleasant experience with Grand Mercure Tokyo/Ginza, but this one smelt faulty from the entrance, attending staff at reception were very poorly skilled that my bill had to be debited and credited twice only third one being correct holding me 40 min and making me miss breakfast as I had to leave immediately after for the airport. A hotel to avoid!!!

Once in the room you could not ask for anything better. Comfortable, well appointed, nice view, roomy. We requested and got a non-smoking room. The elevator lobby on our floor was very disappointing. It doubled for a smoking room! Waiting for the elevator we needed to wait in a smoke filled room. The lobby air always smelled stale, so urged us to get to the room or outside quickly. A couple people at the reception desk were fluent in English. The rest could not help us since we were not Chinese speaking.

Bad service: We arrived at 02:00 on June the 20th in Grand Mercure Xidan Beijing Central. We were early to checkin at the hotel and asked if we can get an extra room for half a day unfortunately the rule says it can not. Unless you want to pay for the whole day. Room for a half day fee is not accepted.

We think it is a pity that no additional service is provided while on the website they have much service promises to us. The lobby provides no fresh impression.
The outside of the hotel there has no lighting when we arrived, taxi chaffeaur had to find themselves.
According to the Hotels.com is a 4-star hotel, our first impression is far from it
For the price we have paid $ 380.88 for 4 nights we get ourselves no free breakfast

2. Water is leaking from the AC, we slept with annoying ticking
3. Bed is poorly formatted, especially under the blanket

The staff make this hotel. All requests were greeted with kindness and superb service.
Overall: While the rooms are somewhat tired, with clean but well used carpets and standard chinese (pretty darn hard) beds, they are clean and well appointed with good linens and nice bath areas. The common areas are beautiful.
Food: The restaurants are good, if a bit pricey. Room service options are somewhat limited, but well priced, and delivered promptly. In room water kettle with tea and instant coffee, and the daily complementary bottled waters are a very nice touch.
Amenities: The spa services are well priced and excellent (ask for #240 for a wonderful massage after long days of sightseeing).
Security: Located on a main street, I felt very safe and welcomed here.
Location: A 20 minute walk (taxi time depends on traffic, but approx. 15-20 minutes) to Tiananmen square/Forbidden City or in another direction, a 20 minute walk to the Silk Market.
Travel/Tourist Services: Excellent service and well priced.
Taxi: Easy to get a taxi - not normal in Beijing!!
Interesting: In the evenings, traditional Chinese music and Tai Chi are available in the lobby, near the lobby bar.

- hotel seems old and in need of a remodel, e.g. carpets are old and stained, grout in bathroom
- lobby, hallways, and elevators smell like smoke
- my non-smoking room did not smell too much like smoke, but since people are allowed to smoke in the hallways, some smoke smell entered
- the hotel restaurant prices and the prices for room service seem expensive compared to other Beijing hotels I've stayed at

In the end, if you're looking for a relatively affordable place to stay that's close to subway lines, then the Grand Mercure is not a bad choice. But if you want something luxurious, or if you are picky about cleanliness then you should probably choose someplace else.

good value, large, clean rooms, good location

enjoyed staying here. rooms were very large and very clean. good location for subway and shopping. good little gym. pool looked clean too, didnt try it though. hotel is a little bit worn - but very clean, could be why the excellent value.
check in was a bit of a wait, but the hotel more than made up for it by giving us free drinks from the bar in compensation. a very thoughtful and appreciated gesture!

American vs China standards

This was by no means a 4 star hotel. I expect that this may be considered a 4 star hotel in China but if you are new to China or a first time traveler this is NOT to an American 4 star standards. The service was nice but the room details that you expect in a 4 star hotel are not available. Like name brand bathroom toiletries, soft sheets, or even a pillow top bed. And like many buildings in China the overall maintenance is not kept up. We had a leaky toilet and moldy grout. As an avid traveler I would rate this 2.5 if compared to American hotel standards.

Not worth the money

Service was OK, but nothing speecial, the room was dated, and soe parts were dirty. The walls near the air vents were darened from dirt, edges of the mirror were black as well as the grouting in the bathroom. Not worth the price.

Great Hotel!

This hotel was amazing! Great customer service and a nice room. We made maximum use out of the incredibly clean and well kept pool, jacuzzi, and sauna!

Well worn hotel

The lobby and check-in areas of the hotel have are fine. They are modern and clean. However, the rooms are well worn. The cabinetry is worn. The carpets are worn and lumpy. The bathroom hardware is pitted and far from shiny. The towels were ragged. Overall, the room felt like it belonged in an old cheap motel, rather than in a hotel with the name \"Grand\" in the title.

However, we felt very safe, and it was well located near public transportation and close to the Forbidden City.

I would not stay there again, and would not recommend anyone else do so either. There are much better options for the price.

Location great! Staff speaks NO English!

The hotel was high-class, high-luxury all the way! It was a lovely stay and most of the staff were very helpful, but there was 1 person in the entire hotel that spoke even a little English. In their defense, it was China, but we had a really hard time. The breakfast was epic every morning... wonderful mix of Western and Eastern. Perfectly located near 2 subway stations and shopping.
