We stayed 3 nights in a family room which has 3 beds. Room is spacious and clean. Reception staff is nice and friendly. Buffet breakfast is included, won't be too many choices but considering this is in arctic circle that resources don't come easy. Surprisingly it is not noisy, as contrary to my expectation that wooden cabin has thin walls. Bus to airport starts from the reception area, so very convenient.

We were pleasantly surprised. Spacious rooms, only waited for the bathroom once in the 4 nights we stayed. The staff were very nice and helpful. The common area/bar/restaurant area was very comfortable. Roughly a 2.5 km walk into town. We would definitely stay here again

As a first timer on Svalbard, the Coal Miner’s Cabin didn’t disappoint! I love how it is away from the main part of town and the rustic feel to it. It has gorgeous views and super comfortable beds. The staff were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.

The staff and Coal Miners Cabins was very friendly and helpful. They always made sure to tell me which food had the ingredient I could've eat. They always smiled and were helpful.

The shared bathrooms were kept very clean and stocked with necessary supplies.

I didn't mind the 20 minute walk into town, as I was hiking most of the day and the bulk of the shops were closed by the time I finished anyway. Superb breakfast, very helpful staff, free washers and dryers, and a very usable common kitchen facility for those who might want to cook. I would definitely stay there again.

Good value for money, friendly staff and had everything you need for a trip to Svalbard. The only thing we didn’t realise when booking was that the bathroom was shared. But the shower and toilet facilities were regularly cleaned and this didn’t cause us any problems. The main city area was also a 40 minute walk away.

Property prices were reasonable by Svalbard standards though a room without ensuite toilet cost the same as a 5 star in Dubai or a palace hotel in India. However cleanliness was maintained and in general staff were friendly
I was told by email that I should first come to hotel & check in and then go for a tour (I had asked if I could do sighseeing and then in evening come to hotel). They infact told me there were no luggage storage facilities in the museum.This was by email. However when I followed their advise I was told I am 1 hrs 30 minutes early for checkin so should pay extra. As there were no safe luggage storage , I had to go back. I was advised to walk as weather was good but slipped badly on the icu roads injuring my knees badly. When I got back iin evening , I was again asked to show ID for checkin. This was terrible customer service.Also was told there is common kettle in the cabins but could not find any so could not make tea /coffee or boil water (the reception area and cabins are different and you need to go via a icy slippery path). Also no safe water to drink. Apart from that it was fine and in general the staff were nice and attentive apart from these 2 exceptions. The dinner buffet though extremely limited was tasty and morning breakfast was ample.This property is far from town but that is mentioned and a extremely long walk .Better to go in groups if walking for support.

The property was nice. Easy to get to and the staff are accommodating. We got two rooms with 2 beds. They are big enough for two people and baggage in each room. The bathrooms are shared in the hallways. Each bathroom is private and has a shower. Very clean and warm during the cold winter. Never had issues waiting for the bathroom. There were 4 bathrooms on each floor. The main building had a bar and a lounge to hang out in. Tea, coffee and water offered all day for free. Would stay here again.

We stayed at the Coal Miners Cabin between 9th and 12th Feb 2024 and it was the most convenient place to explore Svalbard from, I cannot recommend it enough.
The room was great for us as we were mainly out exploring. But even when we were back in it was sufficient.
The bathrooms were in the corridor and was shared between several rooms but we did not see anyone or have to wait even once. It felt like our own private space even when shared.

We had our dinners in their restaurant - the food was good and the free tea and coffee helped. We spent the evening playing the complementary boardgames in the restaurant.
Breakfast came with the room and it is lovely - basic but just the right kind. You'll enjoy it i'm sure.

From the airport: When we landed there were 2 buses waiting outside - tell the driver your hotel and they'll direct you to the right bus. We paid onboard for a return and the bus dropped us at the doorstep.

To the airport: Ask the lovely hotel staff for a bus timetable, or check it yourself on the wall around the entrance to the restaurant. The airport bus passed by all the hotels collecting travellers, just stand outside at the appointed time and you won't miss it. The buses are punctual, our bus was meant to depart at 2pm and it departed at exactly 2pm.

Friendly staff who were ready to help and answer questions. It would have been nice to have been offered help with luggage as there is no lift but a kind man who was cleaning helped me when checking out. Several cabins present - some a bit far from the reception but luckily mine was close. Dinner options are decent. The view and surrounding environment are nice and peaceful, but the walk to the town is definetely longer than the advertised 20 minutes, however it can be a nice walk. I don't mind sharing toilets, but it's difficult to control toilet floors being wet when multiple people are using it, which is a bit annoying. The shower curtain for some of the toilets could have been cleaner. Room was clean and bed really comfortable.

We loved The Coal Miner’s Cabin. Our room was simple with a shared bath. It was so clean and cozy. The one improvement they could make to the rooms is better black out curtains. Otherwise it’s just a great place with friendly staff, great breakfast & restaurant. One of the staff set up a Eurovision semi-finals watch party in the restaurant /bar which was so fun!! Would definitely come right back here my next time in Svalbard!

I love the Staff every staff member that I met at Coal Miners including the kitchen staff and Waiter’s Staff absolutely amazing!! I travel a lot all around the world and I have never met a staff like the staff at Coal Miners Hotel
I actually extended my trip because the Staff was so helpful and kind they felt like my family away from home!!
Also, the breakfast was very good and food that was at the restaurant. Very good and so is the waiters and waitresses and the manager was very kind and helpful! I was a bit concerned, traveling alone to a place far away, but best made me feel so happy and very welcome there!
The cleaning staff was also amazing and very kind and very helpful. It’s the very wonderful place to be. I will definitely be going back there!!

I love it here. The people are amazing that work here the food is excellent. It is very cozy. The beds are very comfortable. You have to be able to walk center of town is about 4 km about away you have to be able to take a taxi or they do have a van but it’s very hard to get it any time of day I would definitely come back here. It’s absolutely breathtaking and very pleasant to be here. This place is very clean. This hotel was very clean. And the rooms are big

Perfect....

Perfect. Located at the end of the Sarcophagus where adventure begins. Reception building has great breakfast including 2 types of salmon, eggs, bacon...all the stuff. Room was clean and bathroom well located. Tour was late in checkout day and they were so nice, let me use the room till 17:00 no extra charge. Definitely coming back to CMC my home in Svalbard !

The accommodation is styled as a hostel and in this category the Coal miners cottages ticks a lot of boxes. The two bed sleeping areas are very basic but adequate with sufficient communal bathrooms to avoid bottlenecks. There are also washing machines available and small lounge areas where groups can relax together if they wish. However if you expect air conditioning or room service this is not the place for you. On a serious note although there is a bar there is no catering facility either at or within easy reach of the Coal Miners cottages so you have to eat in town or bring foodstuffs back for an evening meal. It is also worth noting that CCs are approximately 3k from the town downhill going there but uphill coming back!
Of course you can order a taxi but this is an additional expense which you would avoid by staying somewhere more central.

Not sure if we caught them at a bad time, but there were seemingly issues with the plumbing throughout our stay, which meant that one side of the building had no working showers or toilets. Added to this, there was only sporadic hot water in the showers which is far from ideal when it's -20 centigrade outside. The hand towels in the showers were often empty too. On the positive side, the room was spotlessly clean, the breakfast was nice and the bar in the main building is a nice place to spend time after a day out on the ice.

First: bathrooms/showers, although individual, are shared. Rooms are small with separate beds. You have to leave your hut to get to reception/restaurant. It's at the top of a hill, a 30 minute walk from town. But it's perfect! You're in the middle of nowhere, 600 miles from the North Pole. It's tough (in Winter), so live without the usual luxury! Staff are wonderful and can arrange all activities, such as dog sledding, snowcat tours etc. The 30 minute walk into town is lovely or you can take a 5 minute taxi. The hotel sits by mountains, with the glacier behind (not on a street surrounded by stores) all accessible on tours or by snowmobile (take a rifle). It's a fantastic location. You came this far - take it all in! Live the polar life!

A really interesting place to stay.....

Once you accept that anything on Svalbard costs more than you might expect the Coal Miners Cabins are actually a good price. The buildings have been tastefully converted with good beds, brilliant heating and mining themed decor. The bathrooms are described as \"shared\", this could sound like they are communal facilities, this is not the case. They are large individual rooms down the corridor with a toilet, basin and large walk-in shower. Towels and robes are provided.

Our building had a communal kitchen, lounge and laundry facilities. It was very clean and warm. WiFi is free and good.

Breakfast is served in the main building and has a wide range of typical cold Scandinavian options. Loads of bread, endless coffee and orange juice. The bar and restaurant are good and very busy in the evenings.

We thoroughly enjoyed our four night stay.

The accommodation and facilities are fairly basic and a bit tired, but this is easily the cheapest accommodation with own room that I could find in Longyearbyen. All I needed was somewhere to sleep and shower, and that's what I got. I could have paid double to say somewhere flasher.

The restaurant bar is really good, and the included breakfast was great.

I had missed my flight out and needed a not too expensive place for one day until I could catch a flight the next day. This is the most basic of rooms, with no TV and a communal bathroom. The location is on the outskirts of Longyearbyen. The room and the bathroom were clean, well tended and the building was warm on a cold rainy night. The price was less than half of what the motels in town charged. The onsite restaurant was favored by the locals and was great food at a reasonable price.

The breakfast buffet was great. Front desk staff was helpful. The hotel is 20-30 minutes walk from town center but the airport shuttle makes it very easy to get to/from the airport. The only downside for us was that the shower ran out of hot water in just a couple of minutes.

A charming hotel full of character

The hotel is great and has a modern retro feeling. Amenities are basic but adequate. Shared bathroom/toilets are large and well kept. It is shared but private i.e. only 1 person at a time. About 2 bathrooms on my floor.
The restaurant serves burgers,ribs and steak with draft beers from their local brewery.
Note: do note that it is quite a distance (2km) from town center, either a leisure 30mins walk downhill (from hotel to town) or taxi. there is no public transport.

Arctic expedition stay

I stayed here a few days before my Arctic expedition as well as a couple days after. The rooms are exceptionally clean and comfortable. Everything you need in a room is there. Yes you do share shower rooms but these too are always clean and well maintained. The restaurant/common area where reception is located in separate building is also very clean, stylish and comfortable. This is also where you eat breakfast. The staff are always happy to help and friendly. This hotel is a 20 min walk out of town but this is a good thing as you can’t beat the stunning views of the mountains around you. Highly recommend this place to stay. Oh and the food in the restaurant is very yummy!!

all rooms are well renovated, you don't feel its miners cabin, rooms are as sophisticated as they can be. Was worried about shared toilets, but all toilets and showers are well maintained you wont feel that your sharing with others. Hotel staff is very friendly. Their hotel is good for vegetarian burger and beers.

The hostel has a shared kitchen which is well equipped with refrigerator, cooker and oven. The toilet is clean and well maintained. Breakfast was great and room is cozy. The only problem is the accessibility from the hostel to the main shopping street in the city, which requires a 30 minutes walk each way under the cold icy wind which can be quite tough for people who are less fit. In overall, the place is still great and i do enjoy during my stay. Highly recommended!

Great spot!

This was a lot cheaper than anywhere else we could find in longyearbyen so we were not expecting great things. However, it was lovely, brilliant location, lovely bar/restaurant, very comfy beds, lovely and cozy and lots of bathrooms so sharing with other guests was no problem. Great little kitchen also and the shared living space was very nice and really very beautiful. Short walk into town but thats a good thing as you can see the whole town and take amazing pictures. Will absolutly be back again soon!

Affordable accom and good dinner

I was recommended to stay at Coal Miners as it was more affordable and a quirky place to stay. It was nice to be away from lots of light pollution but in winter it felt too far away from me as a solo traveller. I wanted to be closer in the town so I can pop in and out of the accom to dinner or sight seeing, as Coal Miners is a 20-30 min walk and in the snow feels longer. But I enjoyed my stay there (except the guy snoring in my hear from next door), the staff were really helpful and the breakfasts were yum, the room comfortable and warm. The rooms are simple, just two single beds in the one I booked with places to hang clothes and rest books and things.

The cabins are a good 30 minutes walk from the town centre but the airport buses will deliver you and take you back to the airport. They do charge.
They are comfortable rooms if quite basic. You share a set of bathrooms with your floor so no en suite. Bar/lounge area was good but very limited food menu and expensive for what it is.

We expected hostel standards, but it was better then we thought. Nice bar, rooms are clean. It is possible to blackout them during midnight sun (not 100% but enough).
Hotel is obout 30 minutes by foot from city center.

Warm atmosphere

Friendly, helpful and easy going staff who made you feel welcome. The atmosphere is relaxed and all the guests meet up in the evening to share stories from their adventures in the snow. As a woman travelling on my own, I felt really comfortable there. I looked at some of the other accommodation in Longyearbyen, for me, Coal Miners is the best.

Fantastic reception staff! Good dinner food too (amazing burger and corn stew). Spacious and clean individual bathrooms, with several on each floor.

It's a bit of a hike from the city centre but the tradeoff is that it can be a good (easier) opportunity to meet interesting people from around the world. Also it's much easier to get a clear view of the northern lights here than in the city, and there's a neat history to the buildings. The only real inconvenience is that most of the bars and restaurants and museums are near or in the city centre, so if you don't want to walk, or you're having a late night out (Coal Miners' bar/grill closes at midnight), the cost of taxis can quickly add up (budget for 110NOK each way). Otherwise a very enjoyable place!

Beautifully located hotel - basic but clean

The hotel is in Nybyen, just outside of Longyearbyen but easily within reach of Longyearbyen centre, surrounded by 3 mountains and with less light pollution. I chose it in case there was a better chance of seeing the northern lights but it was cloudy the whole time so I can't confirm this. The room was basic and with a shared bathroom but clean and with friendly staff. It's served in the same way as all other hotels by the airport bus and the tour group pickups. Whilst I was in the restaurant we were all treated to a free palaeontology lecture! If my Norwegian was better I could have understood it but the slides were interesting. All in all a good stay and I'd thoroughly recommend it.

Maximum value

Good value for the money as long as you do not mind sharing a bathroom.The lobby area is a good addition and the restaurant in the lobby area had good food for a good price. The rooms are clean and the price includes breakfast. It is a bit far from the center of the town but if you are fit you can walk it or take a cab (which is readily available).

Good affordable hotel

Very friendly and helpful staff. The food in the bar is good and the drinks are reasonably priced (by Norwegian standards! ). The room was basic but clean. The blackout blind wasn't great and would benefit from being a tighter fit to the wall, but the bathroom facilities were good and having a kitchen gives you the option to save some money by self catering. I really enjoyed my stay and certainly stay again.

A bit expensive, but decent place to stay

The hotel was okay. It was more of a hostel. Shared communal bathrooms, small tiny rooms big enough for just the beds. Around 15 minutes walk to where most of restaurants and shops were at. As far as the plus - the hotel has it's own restaurant, good accommodating customer service, free WiFi, the Airport Bus which most people use stops by this hotel first so you are guaranteed room (it fills up quick), the restaurant and the rest of the town take credit cards (including the bus), and most of tours will pick you up at your hotel so don't worry about the 15 minute walk to the central part of town. Just wish it was better priced for it's location.

A pleasant experience over all but this is not somewhere where you go for being waited on or creature comforts. It's a place to sleep so that you can enjoy the many easy accessible adventures that Longyearbyen has to offer.
