Stayed here before and love this hotel but our room this time was tired especially the bathroom.
The bath was old with high sides which made getting into and out of the bath shower difficult and risky especially as we are now pensioners so don’t bounce well!!
One other moan.. the morning breakfast which was great lacked proper coffee machine, nearly every hotel we have stayed at have a bean to cup machine available. Instant coffee is naff to be honest!

Beautiful Georgian seaside hotel. Currently undergoing renovation and the public arrears that have been completed are fabulous. Our room had yet to be refurbished but was perfectly adequate with a comfy bed. We nearly got caught out on the parking though - we weren't advised we had to pay on a machine on exit and that we had to leave the carpark by 11 so ended up paying for a full extra day we didn't need.

The hotel is undergoing refurbishment but the rooms that are finished, and the public areas are great. The new Fat Badger bar has fantastic decor and atmosphere.

The staff were very helpful, exemplified by the manager vacating her parking space when I was struggling to find a space.

The hotel is a bit dated, but that adds to its charm. It had an excellent restaurant and a very well stocked bar. Lovers of real ale will delight in the 8 handpumps! The location cannot be faulted - step outside and you see the famous Abbey on the headland. Magical. The room was well appointed and cannot be faulted. Overall a great place to stay.

First would like to say. We checked into a beautifully finished room. The room itself was excellent but the view was not so good.
I asked at the reception desk and had a very nice understanding interaction with the lady in charge. We were offered alternative rooms with amazing views, it was explained that these rooms were not yet refurbished but were available and if we found them preferable we could choose . We chose a room with a great view, very happy with the room even before its refurbished yes it wasnt perfect but this was explained the view was worth it and would love the same room after the refurbishment is finished as the fit and finish of the original room was very good quality. All staff were exellent and always willing to help. Great place . Highly recommend.

The evening meal was ok but pricey
The staff are very attentive
The room was very clean but the floor is at an incredible angle (room 136) meaning the bed was tipped to one corner so I woke up with a headache and backache so chose to go for a walk rather than have breakfast.
I would definitely stay again but would have to insist on a bed where my head was higher than my feet .... I only ever sleep with 1 pillow so more pillows is not an option.
⭐⭐⭐ Out of 5 based on my mood this morning didn't complain .. learn and carry on 👍

We were let check in at 2.45 as our room was ready (housekeeping was still happening in some rooms on our floor however!)
It was a bit of a maze to find the room initially.
Room was clean
We got the sea view as per our room type/booking
Shower pressure was excellent but water got hot quick.
Yorkshire tea in the hospitality tray a big ✅️ from us
Plenty of towels
Only 1 accessible plug without unplugging other things.
2 extra pillows (but only 1 each on the bed to start with!)
Walls are thin- we could hear upstairs talking/walking around/using the bathroom.
Floors are a bit wonky (but it is an OLD building!)

The room was clean but tiny and the floor sloped. The bed was ok and bathroom was pretty good. The room is listed as having toiletries - there is one wash for both hair and body that is all. It’s an old building and there was a draft from the window and it was very noisy (wedding reception just below our room with music til midnight) ear plugs would have been good. The bar and restaurant were lovely and breakfast delicious. It’s a good location. You need to book parking spots and there are only a few, the overflow was also full so we ended up in the pay and display across the road (this was fine and £13 for 24 hours).

I booked two family rooms for 1 night and was pleasantly surprised at how big and modern the rooms were. A king size bed in bedroom and bunk beds in separate space meant a.comfortable night for our family. The hotel car parks were full but we easily parked in the pay and display outside hotel. Breakfast was lovely, a good selection of hot and cold food. I would definitely would recommend this hotel.

Enjoyed our stay at the Royal, friendly staff, and the room was very good, a little tired in places but nothing to detract from the overall quality of the hotel. Good breakfast choice, although a bigger plate would be nice, a side plate not an ideal size for a full English breakfast. Great sea view from out room and the hotel is in a prime spot to vist all that Whitby as to offer.

Nice hotel but couldn’t leave window open in room and it was roasting. If you go take a small block of wood to keep sash window open.
Staff were very friendly.
Was a bit noisy as events were being held but room was quiet.

A fabulous location overlooking the cliffs. The majority of the hotel has been modernised, with a luxuriant feel that includes an excellent bar. There are some stairwells and corridors that are yet to catch up that feel very tired and a little shabby in places, but it looked like work was in hand to sort this out. There is very limited parking to book and a small overflow that gives reasonable rates, but you'd need to arrive early to get a space. We opted for a non-sea view room and it was nicely decorated with a huge, comfortable bed and modern bathroom. The staff were superb in all areas, as was the breakfast.

This beautiful listed building is beautiful now into a 2nd year of a 5 year retorvation plan as i am told
Our room was changed due to me being diabled
Although it was spacious very clean with ensuite facilities it was very awkward to maneuver getting into the room as the door was very narrow and i had to take the foot steps off the wheel chair to swing in from the corridor.
Once into the room the ensuite room was uneccesable with the wheelchair as them doors were even smaller .
With having only one leg i found it awkard to get into the shower cubicle as it was about 6 inch high to take the waste pipes .
I ended up sat on floor to shower .
I do understand thing cannot be changed so easily in listed buildings without consent
The bar was up to date and buzzing and the food in the restuarant was super good and also very busy .although had to overcome some steps to enter ,it maybe awkward to enter if totaly wheel chair bound for other people .so have some thought dissabled people when planning your eating requirements.
Staff couldnt do enough for you in all parts of the hotel ,we had a great nights stay and will be staying again, once i get a little more mobile

This hotel I in the midst of a full renovation. So this review is based purely in the condition of the hotel right now.

The hotel location is perfect. Right on the West Cliff overlooking the sea, whale bones and abbey. The new hotel bar is exceptional.

The rooms are perfectly adequate for a short stay. They do need a refurb and that is happening as we speak. I have to say though, that the prices seem to reflect that. They are not charging 5 star prices.

The staff throughout the hotel are always great.

I stay here every year and will continue to do so.

Had a room on the 2nd floor with a view of the abbey and the water, what a lovely sight to wake up to. Our meal at the fat badger was also excellent. First visit to the Royal Hotel and I’m sure we’ll be back. Great restaurant and bar areas. Had a great time at one of their events. Stayed overnight in a cosy double, clean and everything you need in a room. Might be too small if you are there for a week. Parking behind the hotel at £6 per 24 hours. Good WiFi.

Good internet and absolutely stunning building with lots of interesting nooks and crannies. Taken over recently by The Fat badger company the downstairs public rooms are decorated in a Gothic style with dark colours and hundreds of pictures, endless antique goth memorabilia and dramatic light fittings. Gorgeous. staff were brilliant and breakfast was everything you could possible want.
Would highly recommend. Views over the estuary stunning.

This hotel is so in need of a reliable hotel advisor ,the cleanliness is so average you cant say any better, the layout of the room is so wrong, bed set against the wrong wall which makes t.v very difficult to watch,wardrobe has two small sliding doors ,makes entry impossible ,flooring is so loose i felt sorry for guests in room below so pleased we were top floor, were the bed is situated there's no plug sockets for phone chargers or anything else you may need to use. The bathroom is so basic for to be called recently refurbished, there's no rails near the sink to have your hand towels available and the only available shelf cant be used because it is used for the rolled up towels,bathroom door has to be kept closed at all times because of the dampness smell when anyone uses the bathroom, there are so many walls in the room that would appreciate a lovely print or picture but the only used is above the bedhead, very strange choice ,the only positive thing about this room is the wonderful view of the Abbey at sunset and sunrise. On the ground floor i cant fault the layout or the services obviously since the fat badger group became involved, hopefully this in time will progress to the upper floors and rooms.

The rm we had was very large and looked out over the rear car park. The room looked like it had had a recent lick of paint to brighten it up. It had everything we needed for our stay. The bar area was lovely and very busy proving it”s a popular place to drink. We will definitely be visiting again.

room was great, kept very clean , room 410 has the best view and is very quiet but along way from reception, the electrics tripped and the staff says this happens at least once a week? Breakfast good but no cold meats/cheese etc.....wifi was good. The hotel is very clean and the staff are really good. Only thing is the smell of paint as they are renovating the hotel. We found the hotel to be very dark but this is a personal choice and some might like the decor. It is a dog friendly hotel but once again I would not want to stay in a room which dogs had stayed in as not having a pet myself this is something that deters me from going back.

Excellent location, remember to book your parking space. Room decor was very tired. Soundproofing almost non existent, and with a function happening somewhere close, and late returning noisy guests, sleep was elusive. Heaters wouldn’t turn off and room was far too hot for us. Fortunately windows opened. Lots of hot water. Bed was a bit soft for us. Didn’t have breakfast but close to town where cafes are plentiful. Staff pleasant enough. Lifts very small.

Buffet breakfast is very good. One comment- the plates are now very small. A side plate rather than a meal plate.

Also the bathroom doesn't have a loo brush. I asked the staff for one and they provided a brush but said it is a management decision to exclude them-- Strange.

Everything was great apart from noise transference from other rooms and the corridor outside. Considering the hotel had been renovated recently I would have thought that some soundproofing improvements would have been made. I could literally hear the people in the room next door talking normally and people talking to each other in the corridor when walking past.

The room was spotless and well decorated. It was spacious with lots of storage. The bed was large comfortable and linen was changed everyday. The hotel is beautiful with a restaurant, bar, coffee bar and veranda all decorated in a victorian theme. The view across the harbour to the Abbey is breathtaking. The staff are attentive and accomodating, very polite and well presented. This is one of the best hotels we have ever stayed in and i would highly recommend that people stay here.
