The room was excellent with a very comfy king-size bed beautiful view of the sea and Abbey. The only downsize was the bathroom is need of a refurb as the shower cubicle is very small and the doorway is very small. Has a bath that we did use made the bathroom a little cramped. It is due a refurb so be great to come back.
The breakfast was very good but would of liked some more options for vegetarians. The bar was lovely with a nice ambience in The Fat Badger Brand

We were first offered a room with no views of anything as the windows were boarded up. The hotel was/is going through some refurbishment and the decor in the room we turned down and the one we accepted was however first class.The decor was very tastful, the furnishings and fittings were to a very very high standard. Bed was huge and the sheets & pillows were very comfortable....... Egyptian cotton?Probably would have extended our stay had we had a sea view but on whole we'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone. Would we stay here again, definitely without hesitation.

Kerry on reception is an absolute credit to you not only was she helpful with us checking in, sorting out our Drinks vouchers pointing us in right direction for food , impartial too , even then thou we dined in your restaurant, where the food was not only delicious but well portioned too. And for your new 2 week old manager looks like a good find for you as he hospitable friendly and knowledgeable.
Back to Kerry thou not only was she helpful to us but also fellow guests an elderly lady who she sorted a sandwich for and then assisted her back to her room. Gentleman on the morning desk could learn alot from her .Breakfast choices no issues and plentiful and tasty, staff there also friendly and with a welcoming smile.
Room very spacious clean warm and the sea/abbey view excellent.
Many thanks we will be back in the future

It was more than what I expected. Great room with a great view in a great hotel in a beautiful town. Food and service were first class. I was a chef many moons ago and worked in some top hotels from London, to Harpenden to Hereford and not to forget, chef for Celtic Football Cluband this hotel would be in that league. Thank you for a wonderful short break. I'll be back someday.

We had a great stay in Whitby, staff were all knowledgeable and friendly. Breakfast was okay for buffet style but nothing special.
Think it would be wise to upgrade the lighting in the rooms as they are very dark with only wall lights and a lamp.
If you do need parking it is best to call ahead to reserve. It was not made clear this was the procedure for their main car park, there is also a small overflow which was full and we had to use public parking for double the cost.

We had a lovely stay. The bedroom was a little smaller than we expected; however, it was advertised as a small double room, so we knew what to expect. Despite its size, the room was very comfortable, beautifully fitted, and spotlessly clean.

The bathroom was almost bigger than the bedroom and was very modern with excellent new fittings heated towel rail ect which was a plus.

Breakfast was delicious lots of choices full English & continental, we had a very enjoyable stay and would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a clean, comfortable, and modern place to stay.

I was there for a 60’s weekend so didn’t use the facilities much. The rooms were fine but bathroom was tired What I expected in a hotel this old. A lot of renovations going on on the outside and a new lift has been installed so money is being invested. Staff were all lovely On a hilly location so need plenty stamina

We booked a family room and asked for one with easy wheelchair access, they don't have any, all family rooms involved steps - however they had free of charge given us a second accessible room next door to a family room, just without going down the steps. Really do appreciate going above and beyond with that. Rooms were great, clean and well prepared, large TVs, good Tea-Tray. Interior to corridors is a matt dark grey colour, most odd, makes the corridors dark, but quirky and you can see the sloped floors of this old building. Very good condition, no complaints on the hotel, Just one problem, a band was playing until 11:30pm and you could hear the bass, boom, boom rattling through the building and shaking the windows. Really was very unpleasant. So our first time at this hotel, mixed experiences, above and beyond on service and support for our wheelchair needs but spoilt by the music, too loud and obtrusive right into the bedrooms. We didn't have any food in the hotel so can't comment.

Noise insulation is not the best and a shame that the restaurant does not do takeaways so guests would have been able to enjoy their meals in their rooms or as room service. Other than that, brilliant views, mesmerising decors in the lobby that definitely added to the charm of Whitby

The staff were lovely. The deluxe room was small for a double, apparently called deluxe because it had been refurbished.
The general hotel was smart but very dark, Only 1 lift. The parking situation is bizarre - if booking make sure you reserve a parking space (weeks in advance).

Room was lovely with a fantastic views! Shame it didn’t contain a king size bed especially considering the size of the space. Room was clean but as windows didn’t open did smell a little fusty.
Breakfast buffet was great with plenty of choice and space to sit.
Really enjoyed the stay and will definitely visit again.

We had an upgraded room on the ground floor because we took our little dog. It was fabulous, so easy to get outside for her if needed. The drinks were on the expensive side and so was the food, but, the food was one of the best we've had, it must be tried. The breakfast again was hot, plentiful and delicious.

We had a newly refurbished large room, but with a terrible view. Also it was a hike from the elevator to the room, down 8/10 stairs, long walk then down another 6 stairs and then immediately up another 6 stairs. No A/C or fridge, VERY limited parking, Once in we didn't dare take our car out for fear of not getting back in. Walkable location for everything Whitby has to offer, but it sits on the top of a hill, beautiful views from the hotel bar, but you will get your 10,000 steps in walking around Whitby then back up to the hotel.

The check in and car parking was good, the charge for parking was reasonable too. We had 2 rooms, 1 was luxurious and I'm sure was an upgrade. The other room was basic and not so good. It was dusty and had cobwebs, the shower wasn't good and the beds were noisy and uncomfortable. The breakfast was good.

Very tired , everywhere , paint peeling from walls and windows, cracked bathroom sink . Suitcase scuffs on stair walls.
Only toast ( soggy ) available for those not choosing a full English breakfast. Bar area only suitable for tall people , very raised seats. Parking very difficult , didn’t dare move car once parking found.
No extra toiletries in bathroom . Permanent stain on bathroom floor behind toilet .
This building could be magnificent with some TLC.

Deluxe double room with wet room was kept immaculate by the hard working daily housekeeping staff. We had room only and ate out as we wanted to try local restaurants/cafés apart from Sunday lunch in the hotel which was delicious with excellent serving staff. We had a few drinks of Thatchers cider from the the Fat Badger, which we enjoyed either on the terrace or indoor lounge. Very comfortable bed with high quality bedding and soft white towels in the bathroom . Blackout curtains which were appreciated from early dawn light. Plenty of plug sockets in the room, also adjustable lighting. Soft close wardrobe doors and bedside drawer. Lots of hangers provided too, hairdryer and ironing board in the wardrobe if wanted. All staff were very helpful. Only drawback was when checking in on Saturday at 3pm the Fat Badger pub was in full swing and as there is no dividing door between it and the reception, it was very difficult to have a conversation and hear what they were saying about directions to the room, however we found it ok plus we were given a typed sheet with clear information about the hotel on it . An excellent stay in a lovely hotel, would stay again.

If you want to use the main car park you need to book in advance. There is an overflow car park but there are not many spaces considering the size of the hotel.

A lot of steps down to the river and shopping centre or downhill pathways to walk. Okay going down hard work walking back if elderly. I managed both ways with my walking stick but had to have a little rest half way back to hotel. (I’m 81) plenty of parking area & nice areas around to drive to. Worth a visit. 👍

The room was up to standard. The lock on the door was old and not fit for purpose, the carpet in the room was dirty and had stains on it .every floor creaked when walked on so you could hear people waking by most of the night. Also the bed was uncomfortable.

Had a great stay at the hotel, the lady at reception at check in I felt didn’t really want to be there, I found the price of the stay slightly high due to the maintenance of the room, the view was amazing though, the room was very very warm and paint work bad. The breakfast was really good and service was very friendly. Had a meal on the first night at the fat badger which was very nice the atmosphere was great.

Great welcoming staff. Old hotel, old spots of pee on the floor from dogs, old furniture all togheder. Old but clean. The owners must to invest, the staff does the best with what do they have. Food excelent. Also a big problen: NO Heating source available in the room. The radiators was cold, the windows (in multiple rooms which I tested so far) are NOT closing properly in order to keep the cold outside. So please invest in windows and heating, and maybe new carpets on the floors.

The staff at this hotel are simply excellent. If they said something would be done or prepared, it was.
Breakfast is seriously good with sufficient staff unobtrusively on hand to assist with any questions or help needed.
Our bedroom, bed linen and bathroom were very clean.
A hotel stay like hotel stays used to be. We will definitely return.

It would have been better if we had control of the room heating but the radiator was controlled by a thermostat that was apparently controlled by the temperature outside the outside temperature was 10-12deg but the radiator was not on so the room felt cold there was an oil filled radiator in the room but it did not heat the room
There was also a towel radiator in the bathroom that only worked for two hours at a time
A liquid dispenser Soap was on the wall at the side of the sink
And a liquid body and hair soap dispenser on the wall over the shower bath

Booked a cosy room with a sea view though currently there is scaffolding on one side of the hotel but still ok. Our room was basic and very dated. Bed was comfy enough though and the shower also good. The tv in our room only had bbc channels unfortunately. Room was okay for a one night stay.

Great stay, staff were amazing, check in was a breeze, including a comp upgrade for our 20th anniversary.
Only stayed for one night; but could have happily stayed longer.
Room was immaculate, view is stunning across Whitby and the Abbey.
Cooked breakfast was great, poached eggs on request, missed out on the fruit, but that’s what a lie in does.
A lie in caused by a really comfortable bed, best night asleep in a good while!
Thanks Royal Hotel, we really appreciated being looked after so well!

Bathroom poor, decorating shabby, peeling paint taps and shower valve really difficult to operate, no shelf for toiletries dangling earth cables under basin, suggest a better electrical contractor because this is a recent addition. Shower waste blocked. The recent window replacement is poorly installed . Better clerk of works required. Dining hall is impressive and well presented good breakfast.
