Our stay at Playa Tortuga was unfortunately very disappointing. From the moment we checked in, it was clear that the property is poorly maintained. The overall cleanliness of the place was lacking, especially in the rooms and bathrooms. The bathroom was in unacceptable condition—there was no shower head, visible stains on the walls and fixtures, and we even encountered roaches, which was extremely unpleasant and concerning.

The room itself did not feel clean or well cared for, which made the stay uncomfortable. Basic maintenance and hygiene standards were clearly not met. For a hotel that markets itself as a relaxing place to stay, this was far from the experience we expected.

The food was average at best. While it was edible, it did not stand out in terms of quality or variety. To make matters worse, on the day of checkout, we went for breakfast at 7:30 AM and were told that breakfast was not available, even though the hotel states that breakfast starts at 7:00 AM. It appeared that service only begins once more guests arrive, which is very inconvenient for travelers with early plans.

Overall, this stay was a letdown due to poor cleanliness, lack of proper maintenance, and inconsistent service. Based on our experience, I would not recommend Playa Tortuga to anyone, and we would not consider staying here again.

Visited during rainy season. Fabulous views, staff, bed, linen, pillows, AC, pool, outside over-the-water restaurant/bar, & beach area. Room w/broken sliding door. Recommend: replace room curtains, deep cleaning floor into corners, sweep bugs (lots of flies). Honors jubalido (resident senior discount).

We had a very large room. A couch and TV at the entrance and a big king size bed with a lovely balcony overlooking the ocean in a separate room. The bed was super comfy. The pool is large, clean and warm.

The hotel has a great location but it is very much in need of an update. I was also told it is for sale which is why nothing is being done. The breakfast is horrible and the food was very inconsistent. The ladies at the front desk were very helpful and friendly.

I am sure at one point in time, this was an A rated resort. It is very obvious that the property has not been kept up since it opened. The curtain in my room was torn, sliding glass in bathroom did not work and was falling apart, every time I showered it flooded, the furniture was old, discolored, and falling apart, the grass was unkept, weeds were even growing in the sand. I could go on and on. However, I will say that the staff and the food was the best thing about this property.

We understand that as any resort they had safety policies but having 4 small kids and being unable to stay all together in the same room is ridiculous. I stayed in this resort many times for years and they couldnt fix anything to acomodate my kids leaving me to the search of a new place to stay with them. I hope they return to their old management or do something different because I could never ever return to this hotel and I would never ever recommend anybody to stay there. Im sure Im not the only one who has something to say about it.I would rather stay on the street if it was my only option. very very dissapointed

This hotel is very big, the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, overall it was clean and if you needed help with a problem it was taken care of.
The food was okay and they will try to accommodate any wishes you might have, the downside was the food might not be as hot by the time you get it at your table.
Would I come back yes but not at any holiday time as it might get to noisy and as this hotel is very big a lot of guests.

It was a great home basis for all the activities Bocas has to offer. Pool was great as was all the toys / balls / kayaks they had complimentary. Food was good, not great, but I would recommend this place and their friendly/helpful staff. It was great for our family vacation.

The water had a lot of chlorine. One of my kids could barely breath after taking a shower and the rest of us had itchy eyes. One we complained at the front desk they merely shrugged their shoulders saying that it was the city's fault, without a hint of sympathy nor look for a solution or alternative (i.e. shower somewhere else).

So much to say... just negative about everything but the staff.
Smell in the room, awfull.
Cleanliness, noway.
Room old and broken=
. AC don't work properly
. A door is about to fall on your toes
. The odor of moisture doesn't gain your trust!!
. The safe? Don't work.
. The pool. So much birds feecies, not sure into what kind of water you are swimming.
. Breakfast - very under standard
. The rooms are always annexed to another, but the door between the rooms is not tight at all, so you hear whatever is going on in the other room, including very late chatting and laughing
. 4 stars hotel? no way!!! it doesn't encounter a 1 star...

The view and the pool is beautiful. Staff didn't see too friendly.
The first night, we were trying to rest up at 8 PM. Next door, a man was renovating and scraping away with a screeching sounds. My husband told him to stop and he still continue. We called the front desk and they said they will tell him to stop, he didn't. By 9 PM, my husband came out and broke out in broken English and firmly told him to stop making the scraping and screeching sounds. I would not book at this hotel again.

Unsafe, Dirty but Nice Staff.

This was a rundown hotel. No wifi. Dirty rooms and very smelly. Then to make it worse, there is a sign that says don't swim where there are buoy's. There were none and I swam. There was a ROCK WALL under the water and I had a very serious accident. The staff said i was the THIRD person that happened to recently and that the buoy goes out to see. They said they would replace it but never did. When I checked in, I was given the instructions for dinner as we had all inclusive. I was told only the adults get certain foods but we paid all inclusive for 4. On the second day the manager apologized and said that was an error but the night before we did not have enough food for our family. The staff were super nice and tried to help us in many ways. And they did. But the grounds are not kept up and the pool is dirty. What can the nice staff do with such conditions. I felt terrible for that. The light switches were filthy and the floors dirty and stained. We got bites from bed bugs. The pool is murky every day despite a nice man trying to clean it out each morning. There are no tours but the staff did go out of their way to help us arrange a boat tour and taxi to town. This hotel is very rundown and very dangerous. The only thing that stood out as good was the nice manager, the great front desk staff, the restaurant server and bartender were also very kind as were the two ladies who helped to clean up my face. But I would not stay here.

The staff was friendly and helpful. In fact, during my check-in, the hotel staff caught that I had already paid for my entire stay. It was nice to avoid dealing with paperwork if this had been charged incorrectly.

I loved the free breakfast as they always had a variety of different foods. And the breakfast was good. Most importantly, breakfast was available early and late mornings to accommodate different schedules.

I also enjoyed the short walk on the pier to the outdoor restaurant area. It's relaxing to watch the waves and view. The hotel also had several pools that appeared clean and inviting although I didn't jump in.

Here's another plus, each room had 2 chairs on the patio. It was nice sitting out either early morning or late evening just to hear the waves lapping. Kudos to the team because there are room numbers outside each room visible from the outside. Numbers on the outside will keep you from entering the wrong room!

Although the room I was in could've used some updating, I'd stay here again. Why? The rooms were clean, comfortable, and the staff was excellent! The hotel is close enough to walk to downtown. However, I believe most of us just hailed a taxi or van.

Hope your stay here is also enjoyable.

The hosts were amiable and attentive. The hotel structure is aged and needs upgrading but is up-kept. Masks were compulsory in the breakfast area. Breakfast had a good variety: fruit, cereal, traditional dishes, cheese, tea, coffee, juices. The pools were relatively clean. The beach was nice to walk on but unsuitable for swimming due to the restaurant structure. The environment was family friendly. There was not additional entertainment, such as music for dancing, shows, games, etc. Taxi cost $2 per person to travel to and from the hotel.

The staff was great. My room had just a trickle of hot water so be prepared for warm showers at best. Mostly cool showers though. No refrigerator or coffee maker in the room which is a huge downer. Air conditioning worked like a champ though!

breakfast was imposed by 12.99 per person and the food was terrible.
The staff was so slow that it took 1.15 to cook some fries and a fry egg. The bar offered happy hour from 5 pm to 9pm and they didnt have supplies for basic drinks. They over charge you in most of the services.

The hotel and pool area are beautiful. The service however was lacking. The staff were all very kind but there was very little info given without explicitly asking.
Their free shuttle to town also has very limited hours, but a cab is inexpensive and they can call you one. However one night the shuttle that picks up in town at 1am never came so I was left standing around at 1am.
Overall I truly did enjoy my stay.

Beautiful propery right on Caribbean ocean. The sound of surf puts you to sleep. Great tiki bar and restaurant. All staff are great and Robert is the best. He set us up on an incredible 5 island tour where we saw dolphin, sloths, mangroves with big star fish, snorkeling on a reef, and enjoying a couple of hours on a postcard perfect island that's a national park. Very special. Thanks Robert!

I guess you have to put things in context. This is Bocas del Toro and so you're not going to have all the modern conveniences of a more \"modern\" part of Panama. The water pressure in the showers is low.
The price was reasonable for something close to Bocas Town that had AC and the pool is nice although it did get a bit skunky a couple of days. This was likely related to the water shortage on the island at the time so they probably couldn't get fresh water to the pool.

I try to understand that somethings are out of the owners hands and a shortage of rain is a fact of nature, but a company that operates in such an environment should plan for such things and have larger water tanks. Having no water pressure for 2 day and therefore no ability to shower in my room definitely made the experience less for me than it could have been.

This hotel has potential. There some really simple things they could do to make it a ton better. See if the owners/manager responds to show they read these reviews and care. If they improve it a little the could raise the prices some and it would still be a good deal.
1. The grounds are bare, stark grass and concrete. Flowers would add a lot including nice birds. 2. The water is not drinkable but they do not give you bottle water like other resorts in this price range. Instead they only sell half liter bottles for $2 each. There are no stores within a mile so you're stuck being gouged. Bring water.
3. The free bus into town has really odd times. Nothing between 2 and 8 pm. So if you want to go into town for dinner you have to go at 2 or 8. A 6pm bus and 9pm return would be good. 4. Gym was okay. But AC was not working. 5. Pool is very nice but all the comfy chairs were in the sun all day, they should put in the shaded areas on the grass.
6. Beach is okay but swimming is safe only a bit down from the hotel. So you cannot sit by the pool and watch kids in the ocean. 7. Lobby roof is in disrepair. 8. Room was comfortable. 9. Wifi was fine .10. The food at the restaurant was pretty good and reasonably priced .reakfast was good (free water -- so bring your bottle). 11. you have to go inside, through the lobby and the front desk to get towels -- they should be by the pool. 12. They should rent bikes since town is 3 miles away and Skullys (good restaurant a mile away.

Ths place has POTENTIAL but it needs to fixing of the rooms.
Overall the common areas are pretty good - pool, lounges, beach area were good. The issues were as follows:
1) Location is out of town by a couple miles so be prepared for that. We liked it bz you are away from La Boca proper and that gives some piece and quiet. The hotel is on the beach so you have your own private beach with sand which you don't get in La Boca.
Hotel runs a free shuttle but cross check the times. It actually comes/goes more often than the listed times.
2) Checkin desk staff will try and give you a sub par room when the resort is not full. Press them for a better room otherwise you get what they give.
3) Make sure 'Desayuno Incluye'. For some reason when we booked I thought breakfast was included originally, but then on final checkout/confirmatoin it was not, so don't make the same mistake. Bz of location out of town you don't have a lot of eating options so you either bring food, or pay extra at the hotel; plan accordingly.
4) Rooms are 'OK' but not great. Rooms could be in better condition for what you pay for. Rooms do have AC but the power went out one day so we lost the AC for a day but it worked the other days.

Our room had an overwhelming smell of cleaning product. It was so strong that I was not able to sleep and opening the patio door did little to clear the stench. The condition of the rooms and hotel are poor. The pool is filthy. Our safe didn't work. It's definitely a run down hotel and its not worth the amount they are charging. Will not stay here again

Hotel's design is outdated.
Whatever is called a game room is a room with a Foosball table and hockey table.
Pool is less interesting than our community neighborhood in Texas.
We rented 2 rooms.
One of our rooms had a broken shower. I haven't checked other one.
Rooms don't have coffee maker or mini-fridge, after I mentioned it in my check-in experience online, both appeared in one of our rooms with an email from the property these are available by request.
Well, maybe there are tons of stuff are available per request but this is not communicated in any way.

We were a little skeptical due to some negative reviews we had read but overall very pleased with everything. We had a first floor room for the first 4 nights, it was a little musty but we had an ocean view, with the hotel kayaks in front of it, still beautiful! Staff was great, maybe they could smile more but when smiled at, they smile back! We moved to a third floor room for the next two nights. Wow, what a view! Both rooms were very clean! It is a rustic island! The Hotel is perfectly situated for us. We were close to town and close to quiet! Thanks Playa Tortuga Your facilities and breakfasts were fantastic!

Hotel okay, it Bocas needs help

Hotel did not have any store to buy drinks or snacks. No ice machine, although was available at bar. Store to purchase local merchandise would be nice. Hotel Shuttle ran on a schedule that was not convienent and needed taxi to go into Bocas town.
Side note, Bocas town had nice resturants, but found the town dirty with garbage on streets. Whole town needs to take pride to repair and cleanup!

Service was awful. Food took too long to arrive, Buffet service didn’t work well (food wasn’t enough, They didn’t replace Juice, coffee and eggs during buffet hours. Overall the food & beverage department was terrible. Tv in the room didn’t work and we had problems with the ac. One of the best hotels in Bocas del Toro but service is unacceptable. They take tourist for granted.

Playa Tortuga Hotel - 2nd Visit this year

Overall good experience, staffing really nice. Didn't had a chance to enjoy the breakfast as price bumped a little bit more, but room service also was excellent. Recommended!!

Beautiful place

My experience is that it is a very beautiful place with crystal clear water, friendly people .. excellent weather.

The hotel has warm rooms and really cozy beds for those who are going to enjoy life ... to rest and to know a place really made by the hand of God.

After reading other reviews, this is about the same. The hotel had very nice service, decent breakfast and a great pool. The hotel is a bit worn but not enough to negatively impact the four nights we stayed. As far as the local area, you have to take a taxi or water taxi anywhere you want to go.

i have had a fabulous time at the playa tortuga. The facilities are great. The rooms are great. The location is great. But the people who work here are the best of all. Jonella and cissie in particular. would come back here in a minute.

Like location but???

The staff is rude, specially the restaurant you have to look for a waiter to get service. Food is pricey. I always to downtown to eat food was much better. I recommend bocas del Toro but consider other hotels.

Excellent view but needs some improvement

Services were great and staff were supportive, friendly and helpful. Excellent ocean view on the third floor and very comfortable with the suite. However, I would recommend improving the following situations: The shower's hot water are not steady, it was sporadic and I had to be careful not be burned with the surge of hot water or be cold with just the cold water. The AC air flow had minor issues and the phone didn't work. No tissue box anywhere. I didn't complain to the Hotel though since I can cope with it. In hindsight, may be I should and the hotel can make improvement!

The best hotel in Bocas

My boyfriend and I stayed here for 6 nights. This is THE very best hotel in all of Bocas. It is just outside the city center with a free shuttle service. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, with A/C and ocean views. There's also a restaurant with breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is a resort and includes a beautiful pool and sunbathing area as well as a private beach. My only suggestion for improvement would be to better insulate the walls as there was sometimes TV noise from the adjacent room.

Beware of credit card fraud at this property!!!!!!

When we checked into this hotel they took an imprint of my credit card. About two days later someone was internet shopping with my card for $3000.00 of goods. My card was then frozen by my credit card company which inconvenienced me for the rest of my trip an I had no access to its use. I think you should remove this hotel from Hotels.com. I would never recommend it to anyone. The food and drinks were bad too.

Excellent beach location, five minutes from Town

We shall not stay here again , not because of the service as that was excellent and everyone was very friendly. The main problem was that our room was very 'tired' and in serious need of upgrading and renovating. Certainly, for the price we paid, we expected much more. The bathroom was a shambles with the sink not draining, the toilet pipes coming away from their wall fixture and, during our last night, leaking and flooding the floor. The pre-arranged Hotel bus did not pick us up at the airport, on our arrival but our taxis fare was re-imbursed at the hotel with a complimentary bottle of wine. Again, the Staff were excellent but I don't think we can be enticed back there for our next visit to Bocas del Toro in three months time.

Save Your Money

We booked this place at the last minute while on vacation in Bocas del Toro. Wish we would have saved our money and just stayed longer at the place we were already at. The towels were horrible. The linen actually flaked off and stuck to your skin. When you dried off after a shower, you then had to wipe yourself down to get all the towel linen off yourself. We never used the sitting area in our suite as there was no light in there. It was too dark to read or do much of anything. We tried eating in the restaurant a couple times and ended up taking our food up to the room to eat due to black flies. As soon you the food is on your table in the restaurant, black flies are constantly swarming you. Your food goes cold because you are spending all your time swatting flies away. We spent the rest of the vacation eating in town. Our only staff complaint was on check out with the front desk. When we checked in we were told they needed a credit card on file in case there are any room charges. To us this was a normal request so we gave them it. They said they put a $400 preauthorization on it. On check out we wanted to pay all our charges with cash. She told us if we don't pay it with the credit card, then the hold will stay on it for 45 days. That is ridiculous! After arguing, we had to put some amount on the credit card to have the hold removed so we put $1 on it then paid cash. They charge you an extra 4% on credit card payments........that explains a lot.

I loved the comfortable bed and chill balcony. The pool is huge! The little beach area there is just ok, but for lounging and hanging and relaxing where you stay, this place is amazing!
