Room is beautiful and so is the house itself. Only thing we didn't care for is the beds were dirty, crumbs and food underneath blankets etc not something you wanna see. Also no hot water. Everything else was a breeze and very enjoyable.

I will give this place a 2/5 stars overall, BUT that’s doesn’t mean I won’t stay here again. I loved the location downtown Denver, it was affordable, and check in/out was easy (self check in/out). We also loved its Victorian-like theme

Things we didn’t like: I tried contacting the hotel staff via email and call, didn’t get an answer both times. Many of our windows wouldn’t completely close. The room had an A/C unit but did not work and the room got warm quick. (we stayed in March, I couldn’t imagine summer months). The room could’ve been a little cleaner.

Entrance had a bad smell. Carpet needs cleaning. Room dirty with beads all over room. Heat worked til around midnight. Radiators. No heat. Area rug in bedroom and bedspreads need to be freshened up or different ones. Looked drab and not very clean. No extra blankets. Beds were ok. Kitchen very clean. Bathroom sink still had toothpaste in from previous guest. Overall a 3.

My stay was okay, but not quite what I expected. The hotel has charm, but the room looked different from the photos, the check-in felt more like an Airbnb experience versus a charming, historic bed and breakfast. Not a bad experience, just not the right fit for me. Good for travelers who don’t mind quirks and a more self-service style stay.

No staff, I thought I booked a boutique hotel, not some sort of Airbnb type rental. No one on premises, no elevator, had to lug my luggage up three flights of stairs. No instructions on how to heat the room, noisy street noise even though they had earplugs. Cute room, but thin walls, heard the couple next door arguing in the middle of the night.

DON'T STAY HERE!!!

I don't normally review but feel I need to warn people not to stay here. My daughter and I were on the 3rd floor facing Colfax. We did not feel safe due to all the homeless out front and night time activity. The pictures on the website are not accurate. It is a rundown nightmare. Outside is totally covered in ivy and the windows as well making it dark in the rooms. The carpet is dirty and ripped. Upon arrival in our room, the first thing I noticed was the dirty bathroom. It had dark long hair all over the floor, a used toothbrush and razor in the shower. The carpet had not been vacuumed, the table was broken and two of the lights did not have lightbulbs. The coffee maker had old coffee in it with mold growing and the dishes in the cupboard were not clean. I have never been in such a dirty dark place. Way over priced. I would pay another 100 a night to stay downtown.

No person working onsite, luckily they answered the phone but weren’t really helpful… offered to cancel our reservation instead of fixing their mistake. I thought my room was very nice and clean. My only reservations with the property was that the area was unsafe. If you walk a half of mile to the east where my son lives , the area is better. I would not walk at night alone in this area.

Nice space and relatively clean room. Do wish there was somewhere to hang towels and fix the leaky faucet in the kitchen. Struggled to clean plates as there were not cleaning supplies. Appreciated the amenities and I would stay here again! The homeless were a bit of a nuisance but manageable. But overall, a very pleasant stay!

Good stay, rough area

I booked this based off being close to a pre concert meet up at a local restaurant. The area around it was across the street from a bus stop. The area around the hotel was covered with trash and had a lot of unhoused people. No one bothered me, but I was a little uncomfortable walking back post concert by myself. My room had an ac unit which was nice but only drapes and with it being seconds from a brightly lit gas station, the curtains blocked the air, definitely need blinds instead. It worked for what I needed and was clean inside which is what the best you can hope for

The television did not work correctly. There was no volume the area around. It was unsafe. There were homeless people everywhere and the 7-Eleven even had a warning sign of recording people that I could hear from my window. The bed was the most uncomfortable bed I’ve ever slept in. I was told that I would get at least 50% off my stay.

A hotel with some charm in a terrible place

The hotel has already (snarkily) responded to others who have complained about the homeless situation, stating that \"all cities have homeless problems.\" Okay but this particular corner of Colfax and High Street is unbelievably bad. Parking on the street was super limited and you had to walk past what can only be called absolute squalor to get to the front door. Inside, the hotel is not without its charms (but is without any staff) and you'll definitely need to make use of the complimentary earplugs and eye masks they leave you in order to get any sleep. I took my earplugs out around 3 am hoping the zombie apocalypse outside would have calmed down, (which it mostly had except the occasional person screaming).

The hotel inside was pretty clean actually but unfortunately the chemical products they use are overpowering and we got out of there as fast as we could in the morning. Switch to some more eco-friendly cleaning products.

If I were the owners of this hotel, I'd be going to every City Council meeting I could and demand that Denver clean up the scene around my business. Are there no police in this town? If it sounds like I am being too harsh here, please note that I have left out some of the worst things we saw. Not just homelessness, but prostitution, drugs, public nudity, and the biggest mess on a street corner I've ever walked past.

Also the listing says, \" ... all while being pampered by the top-rated helpful staff.\" What? There's literally nobody there!

I feel like it would benefit from having someone onsite, the homeless sit around on the steps, making it super uncomfortable when trying to get in/out. There are a lot of noisy things that are happening in the area like construction and large groups on unhoused people chilling outside. Would not be a problem if the windows were all shut, however, one of the windows in the sunroom attached to the suite was stuck open when I arrived and I was unable to close it. I instead had to close the doors that opened to the sunroom to mute the sounds from outside and keep the room from getting hot because all the cool air from the A/C was just escaping and allowing hot air in. The main door to the suite also needs some maintenance because every time I opened and closed it, it was incredibly loud, and I felt bad disturbing others in the hotel. Overall, not the worst experience I’ve had in a hotel, but no where near the best. Please look into doing maintenance of doors and windows in your facility, it is both for comfort and safety.

Beware! Stay away!

One of the worst experiences I have had in a while. The pictures on the website are nothing of what the hotel actually looks like. Lets start with the outside. First of all it says there is parking for their guests.....there is not. If your lucky to find a parking on the street nearby, your blessed but don't count in it. Second, the hotel is really hard to see because it falls in with a bunch of liquor stores and sketched out gas stations. There were homeless people hanging out in the front of the hotel as well as a couple of prostitutes. The door to get into the hotel didnt even work. There was a sign saying read the sign to the left, but there was no sign to read so we had no idea how to get in. After struggling I attempted to call someone for help but there is no human being on this property to assist with anything nor do they answer their phones. We finally got inside the building only to find that the suite we booked was not the suite we were given. I booked and paid for the Albert 4 suite with a kitchen. We got a stinky old room with a 2nd unneeded bedroom, a mini fridge, microwave and an ancient coffee maker. After hearing a commotion outside we decided to get dinner only to find a homeless person asleep in the back of our truck which was parked two blocks away! That was the final straw. We grabbed our bags and didnt even stay at this place. We ended up driving home overnight. Ibhighly reccomend staying away from this place. The pictures they post are bs.

There's was no outside parking, had to find a parking spot on the street, unfortunately there was construction and street closure up and down in front of the hotel which took away any chance of parking close.
The neighborhood was not a place i felt safe leaving my vehicle parked, let alone have to carry luggage blocks to get into the room.
We choose not to stay and find other accommodations

Quaint hotel - neighborhood not great

The hotel and the room were very quaint and lovely - just as advertised. A few things to note, especially for solo women travellers: location of the hotel is noisy (but they provided ear plugs) and across the street from a bus stop favored by homeless people who called out to me. As a woman, this was not very reassuring. The door code provided only worked for one night, instead of the two I had reserved. Fortunately I entered the main door with other people who were returning at the same time. Otherwise, I would have been waiting in the street while a new code was provided. The hosts were quick to respond but it took 5 minutes and standing outside at night would have been anxiety-inducing. The room provided a coffee maker and tea. When I boiled water, I found an old sachet of coffee in the coffee maker - underwhelming to say the least.

Overall my stay was ok. The Property its self could certainly use a facelift. I stayed in 2 rooms for my stay and i must say i love the unique designs of each room, but the rooms its self could really use and update. One of my rooms only had 2 outlets in the main living area and neither were even close to my bed. The other room didnt even have bed side night stands i had to charge my eletronics on the other side of the room. Also this room had a lack of plugs in it as well.

When my husband and I arrived at this location, we were horrified at what we drove up to this location and parked out front, we were greeted by homeless people on the steps leading to the door, we had to physically step over them. When we finally got to the door, as we searched for our code, another girl on the stairs opened the door up with her code, as if she had done it for other before. How incredibly unsafe. Upon entering the building, we were met with an awful smell, dirty rugs and an overall very unsettling appearance. At this tine, we realized there was not any hotel staff on site at all. We never even entered our room, we left and thought it would be 100% safer to stay somewhere else. The location of this “chalet” is incredibly dangerous for out of town guests with plans of leaving their room at any point. To say we were disappointment in this booking is the understatement of the century!!

The rooms are VERY swanky (stayed in the Albert ste) but being that there is ZERO on-site staff, here is the issue: response times if there is an issue... and there was. We ran out of the ¼ roll of toilet paper by the 2nd day and there were only 2 washclothes for 2 ppl for 4 days. I emailed mgnt but got no response. Luckily we had our own TP! Then the 2nd day we found a cleaning person and asked them directly and she took care of it. But then the lock code stopped working on the room door. U have a maglock at the front door and an electric doorlock on the room. Evidently the batteries die all the time but cleaning staff cannot do that. So she let us in by using the master key but we had to wait for the Mgr to chg the batteries and reprogram the lock. Well she was supposed to be there in 5mins as she was already en route supposedly. That was at 9am. I had to go to a trade show, but my wife cldnt leave or she might not be able to get back in the room- and there is NO lobby. The Mgr finally showed up arnd 5pm. So my wife cldnt even leave for lunch or to go outside for fresh air. All day she was basically trapped in the room.

Other issues: the furnishings in the room in the pictures must be for staging bc the room was much more barren when we were there- no decorative credenza, nightstands were diff, no bedskirt at all; the coffee was not replenished daily; the window onto the alley was missing the lock, homeless hang out on the side and in front of the bldg so remain vigilant.

It's definitely a place with character! The area is a bit sketchy and there always seems to be a few people hanging around the street outside--I would try to avoid coming and going alone if I could. The service was great however, and there's air conditioning and the bed was comfy. It was still a great experience. Definitely check out Pete's Diner and the Lion's Lair just down the street.

No way, never again!!
I’m a well-seasoned Denver traveler and have stayed all around the Capital Hill area. I get it- there’s a certain crowd here and I don’t mind.
But, this place is THE worst. I used to walk past this building and I thought it was a hostel. It just had that look- a lot of people hang out right here.
I did have to park 2 blocks away and walk with all my stuff through the homeless crowds. That was rough.
But, the inside of this place is just as bad.
There was marshmallow goo or something on the floor, then on my shoe, then just everywhere.
The toilet leaked and ran all night. I couldn’t get all the curtains closed so I felt every exposed to the outside. The linens are all gray so you can tell how really dirty they are, but if you look you’ll see the stains.
The worker there didn’t greet me, just sort of ran by and opened the door (my code didn’t work) and didn’t say anything. She looked a little rough to be honest.
It’s just a gross place. Doesn’t feel safe at all. Definitely not clean. There was a half eaten bag of open chips in the cabinet so you know they’re not cleaning real deep or anything.
No matter what the price, I would never stay here again. Ever. And, believe me, I’ve stayed some shady places.
And before the sarcastic management that responds to other reviews says something smart assy, let me say- I do know what a hostel is. And I know this area very well. This place may not technically be a hostel, it definitely has that vibe. This place

We tried the door code three times with the code we were given and unable to get into the holiday chalet so we had to find another hotel. This hotel is located in economic deprived area of town with homeless people and pan handlers coming up to us as we tried to get into the front hotel door.

The bed was alright, the room itself was lovely. Really spacious and had a decent enough bathroom. That said the area around the b&b was awful. The steps leading up to the rooms were littered with homeless people shouting and jeering at you as you passed which really wasn't helpful when our key code stopped working on our second night. The rooms are quaint and somewhat charming however, the noise coming through the paper thin walls was nearly unbearable at night. We were kept awake almost all night both nights of our stay by people running around the halls, slamming doors, laughing and screaming and to top it off, someone actually came into our room in the middle of the night as I had fo scream at them to leave. I have no idea how this man got into our room but he appeared to either have a master key or knew the code to enter. I would not recommend staying at this place.

I absolutely loved this place!! I stayed in the Helena suite and it was absolutely beautiful. There was a small kitchen, a sun room and a cute little bathroom. We visit Denver often and just found our new favoriate place to stay! We stayed in the Albert Suite 1 and it was wonderful. The bed was like sleeping on a big, giant, fluffy cloud. I kept waking up, but in a good way . . . \"It's only 2:00 am? I feel like I have been sleeping for hours!\"
If you're not from around here, the location may be a bit off-setting, but you just have to get used to a little Colfax road noise (which dies down around 10:00 pm) and take advantage of the lovely neighborhoods surrounding the Chalet. Pete's 24 hour diner is just down the block and you shouldn't miss it! 81 (?) years in business and still serving great food!
The Holiday Chalet is charming, old world class!

Great price, but safety concerns…

For the price, I couldn’t beat it, however safety of the surrounding community was a concern. Also the parking available was an issue. After a long day, driving around and around trying to find safe parking near the hotel was an issue.

It is a great old house and our room was spacious and clean, with a really comfortable bed and a great little sitting room. There is also a small kitchen, with a full-sized fridge which was stocked with everything you would need to cook a meal. We were there for only 1 night, attending a concert at a nearby venue, so we checked in around 5 PM and checked out at 5 AM the following day.

Although I had some knowledge of the area, I was a bit taken aback by the homeless population. My daughter and I were not harassed at all, but given that parking is on the street, we were super vigilant and cautious. The small amount of interaction we had was just a polite greeting, completely non-threatening.

This being said, I would stay again. Checking in and out was super easy, the rate was reasonable, the room and hallways were clean, the Wi-Fi worked well, and there was security on the premises. I do think it is important for folks to google the area so they are prepared. I would not recommend it to a person traveling alone.

Lovely Denver Gem

Great hidden gem. The beds were very comfortable, plenty of hot water and good pressure. The host was great, she answered all of our questions completely and promptly.
Other reviews mention Colfax being a bit sketchy. This street is a main thoroughfare, however, the neighborhood on either side of the road is beautiful with tree-lined streets and beautiful old houses. For us, the area is a fun mix of beauty, history and access to activities.
We had fun and would gladly stay here again.

‘The Chalet’ is one of the coolest places to stay. Randee does an incredible job making the ‘chalet’ beautiful and filled with love. It is a Classic Brownstone Denver Mansion built in 1896 during the Golden Architectural Age and became one of the firsts BnBs in Colorado (property taxes forced the owner to rent rooms to survive.) Today The Holiday Chalet stands as a memorial to a time when excellence and architectural elegance mattered. The Holiday Chalet is a once in a lifetime experience you should enjoy fully.

Easy to check in & out. Room was clean

The Hotel was in a noisy area. Lot of homeless people around the Hotel asking for money.
I also felt like the Hotel was more like a Hostel than a Hotel. Definitely over priced.
I liked the room I stayed in, but unfortunately I wouldn't stay there again.

The hotel itself was beautiful and well cared for, our room was quiet and comfy. It was at the edge of a residential neighborhood however Colfax is the Main Street there so liquor, convenience and pawn shops dirty cityscape. The owner was very meticulous with keeping things nice. (Blowing the sidewalk out front, security greeted us each time, very secure check in)

Cool place, great location, a bit sketchy.

The hotel itself was nice. A little quirky as indicated in the pictures, but fun. When we had a problem with the lock, the staff were great about finding an immediate solution.

The hotel is on the edge of some sketchy neighborhoods, and that combined with the need to search for street parking was a bit iffy for a family stay. The security of the electronic lock codes… let’s say we could laugh about it now, but it did not make us feel secure.

This is an old Victorian Building, with nice decor, including stained glass windows in the stairwells. Comfortable bed, good internet, clean, nicely appointed rooms, and windows that open. Easy transport from Union Station (bus #15) and a helpful manager. It is close to the Natural History museum and other interesting spots. This is not an antiseptic building and neighborhood, as it has some interesting character, but I felt safe and found local residents quite helpful. I expect to stay there again, next time I am in Denver.

Have stayed here twice and it’s fantastic both times. Rooms are beautiful and clean. Parking can be a little bit of a pain but was always able to find parking within walking distance. Last stay I forgot some stuff in the room Amd the property manager was so nice and gave me a code to run back in and grab it. Will definitely be staying here again.

Very charming rooms and atmosphere. I literally did not interact with any staff (they send you a code thi get into your room), but I also didn't need to. Colfax (the street at the entrance) has a few homeless people on it, but otherwise the area is nice. Lots of interesting places to eat, beautiful old neighborhoods behind the hotel (lots of people walking dogs, big trees, beautiful houses), two nice parks in walking distance, and also in walking distance from the Natural Science Museum, the Denver Zoo, and the botanical gardens (I didn't do the zoo, but the other two were very worthwhile). There's a full kitchen (stove, fridge, big sink, coffee maker with coffee, dishes), and they provide lots of little amenities. I would stay here again.

Give this hotel a pass.

There was no on-site staff. There was a noisy man two doors down who was very loud all night (I left the hotel at 5 am) and he was still heard all over my floor as I was leaving. There was no staff member available to address his behavior. My room faced Colfax and there was loud road noise until about 2:30 am. Coffee in the room was all decaf.
