Although we had a technical issue with the TV on arrival, the staff reacted in a speedy and thorough manner to resolve the problem.
In general a warm, welcoming & helpful hotel - the restaurant staff in the morning exceptional.

Ho soggiornato al socrates hotel una settimana e devo dire che l'esperienza è stata deludente. La seconda stella la dò solo per la cordialità del personale, solare e gentile (non alle inservienti perché non facevano il loro lavoro e sembravano palesemente scocciate dal lavoro che facevano). Abbiaml fatto il check-in che la stanza era sporca (non aspiravano e tiravano lo straccio, ho dovuto usare io uno degli asciugamani messi a disposizione per spostare lo sporco e nonostante questo, il giorno successivo, vedendo palesemente lo sporco attorno e sull'asciugamano lasciavano comunque la stanza lercia) e abbiamo fatto il check out con la stanza lercia. Fortunatamente le lenzuola e gli asciugamani te li cambiavano ogni giorno. Il bagno era invaso dalle formiche, abbiamo dovuto spostare la tazza degli spazzolini (anche qui, abbiamo dovuto usare una delle tazze da thè per mettere gli spazzolini) sul comò fuori perchè sennò trovavamo invasi pure quelli. Mi dispiace ma la pulizia è la cosa più importante in un hotel, due stelle solo per la gentilezza del personale, soprattutto il guardiano notturno ed Espina (non ricordo il nome, ma la signora che serve alle colazioni).

Highly recommended

I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking to stay somewhere close enough to amenities but away from excessive noise. Clean, well maintained and with helpful and pleasant staff. Breakfast was fresh and plentiful, airport transfer a bonus. Pool clean and well maintained, pleanty of sun beds. Grounds well looked after and pretty. Rooms clean and well equiped - only downfall was the shower which is fairly small. Stalis and Malia centre/old town all within easy walking distance. Nearest bars/restaurants/beach within ten minutes walk of hotel.

Lovely hotel

We booked the Socrates as a last minute deal and we were really pleased with our choice.
The welcome from Sophia was warm and sincere and she offered us lots of useful information on the local area.
We were given rm 202 om 1st floor facing swimming pool but enough of a distance away not to be too noisy. The room was a good size with a king size double and single bed, TV, kitchenette, hairdryer, and a small but functional bathroom. The room was spotless and cleaned everyday with fresh towels provided as well as bottled water. A/C was free and worked well. WiFi was strong in reception but weak in the room.
Pool was a decent size and again cleaned regularly with enough comfy beds and a couple of cabanas that there was never the normal rush for beds even when the hotel was full.
The breakfast was buffet style with the usual cold meats and salads, hot bacon and eggs, toast and pastries, unlimited tea and coffee so you could really fill up for the day. Served at the pool bar till 10.30 meant that it was still there after a heavy night on the strip. This then became the bar where snacks were served all day. All again well cooked and presented. Staff were all happy and welcoming.
Socrates is 5 mins from the beach, 10 mins from the main strip and 15 mins from the old town so was handy for everything.
Lovely hotel and a lovely stay!!
NB the hotel advertised with free airport trfers but this is only from Heraklion. Chania will cost around 190 euros!!

Good value hotel with helpful staff

I went with my daughter and her 9 year old son. We stayed in late October right at the end of the holiday season. It was quiet and the staff were very helpful. We took their advice on nearby places to eat and weren't disappointed. There are plenty of restaurants along the sea front road, all within walking distance and very good value compared to UK equivalents. We hired a car for our holiday so we could see different parts of the island, and found plenty to see and do. Our room was kept beautifully clean throughout our 4 day stay. Breakfast was by the pool with a good selection (bread, pastries, cold ham, cheese, yoghurt, fruit, cereals, egg and bacon) and as much as you wanted. Only minor downside was that it seems you can't get a decent cup of tea, but that applied throughout the island, not just at this hotel. Overall we were very impressed with the hotel. This site doesn't allow reviews that include room prices, but for a British tourist it was excellent value, even at a time when the value of the pound was relatively low.

Quiet and Relaxing Hotel

I would definately recommend this hotel, if you want a relaxing and quiet holiday.
Sofia is a very helpful host, and nothing is too much trouble. She always has a smile on her face. All her recommendations were spot on. All the other staff were lovely too.
It's about 10 minutes walk from Malia, and 20 minutes from Stalis.
It's very easy to get a buses, and cheap too.
I would come back here again.
There isn't anything negative I can say about The Socrates Hotel, and its staff.

Great stay, Sofia was amazing at the front desk and helped us with all our needs and everyone else also was helpful. Great location, great service, clean and comfortable. They helped us book excursions and everything else we needed. Less then 10min walk to a main little town and beach. Would recommend.

A OK trip

We spend a week in Socrates, the hotel was within walk in distance to the beach. Local bars and restaurants were also within walking distance. The room was OK nothing else but needs some upgrade like a flat TV. The amenities were scarce and you had to ask for when needed, The reception desk recommended us to bring our own amenities for long stay.
The breakfast and service in the bar restaurant was excellent.

Nice relaxing place to stay in Malia

Our group of 4 'middle aged' ladies enjoyed our short break of 5 nights at the Socrates in early September. Good location, 10 mins walk to beach and restaurants. Although easy walking distance to 'the strip' ( most places were open, but they were pretty empty), the location of Socrates was so quiet. Very friendly and helpful staff on reception and in the bar which also served a lovely buffet breakfast. Our accommodation was a two bed appt with a double and twin beds. It was quite dated and storage was limited but it was very clean and the air con was efficient. This was our 3rd visit to Malia and we were very happy with our stay here. Would recommend for couples, families or groups of friends looking for a happy, relaxing holiday in the sun.

Not a lads hotel

This hotel is very clean, the staff are very friendly and the location is good if you want a quiet holiday because it's a very family orientated hotel, so not the best if you're going on a lads holiday (as we did).

We used the cooking facilities in the room, but as the kitchen is in the same room as the bedroom it made the whole room smell of cooking food, which isn't too pleasant.

The wifi is free but was very slow and kept on cutting out so was pretty useless.

Overall despite those downsides if you want a family holiday and won't be cooking it is a very relaxing place to stay with nice staff and a gorgeous pool.

Staff are amazing and so friendly. The hotel is very relaxing close to both malia and stalis-within walking distance. Pool area is also great and has gorgeous views. Highly recommended. Only disadvantage is that the wifi connection was not very good

We arrived at our hotel late at night. It was after 22pm. We were all tired and we had booked an apartment with 2 rooms for 4 of us. We were welcomed at the reception and shown the map where we were and interesting sites near by. We were shown our apartment and were asked if we were happy with it. He sent 4 teas for us courtesy of the hotel. Whenever we had questions they were happy to answer and if they didn't have an answer they would find out for us and come back to us. Family oriented and quite resort. Family owned and all staff were very helpful.

In the heart of Malia

We had a nice 4-day stay at the Socrates hotel. The location is near a nice (if a little too busy for my taste) sandy beach and a five minute walk to all the restaurants. A little weird fact about the hotel is they do not provide any toiletries at all -- no shampoo, conditioner or shower gel. Our two-bedroom unit was clean and spacious, plenty of room for the family of four.

Good choice for a family

Airport transfer organised by George at the hotel very smooth. A really good choice for families, short walk to beach but an excellent pool is provided and you can laze the day away with cocktails and bar snacks to hand. Although this is a family run hotel it still provides all your needs such as organising car hire and suggestions for tours and places to visit.

Great hotel for all.

The staff were very friendly and helped us to have a great time. They were very informative with what to do and where to go and at the same time where not to go. The hotel rooms are clean and very user friendly and each time we came back to the room after a day enjoying ourselves the room was cleaned beds made and the towels were always in a different pattern, even our clothes that were left out were either folded nicely or put in to a nice pattern which made us smile. The swimming pool is really good and cleaned daily. The gardens look beautifull and are kept well. The food is lovely and a good price and the bar is nice too. I will definetly be going back next year.

Sehr freundliches und hilfsbereites Personal, schöne und saubere Unterkunft (wie auf den Fotos), zentrale Lage, grosser Parkplatz (kostenfrei), gutes WIFI, schöne Poolanlage, im einigen Gehminuten am Strand, leckeres und grosszügiges Frühstücksbuffet….wie waren sehr zufrieden.
Betten waren für mein Empfinden etwas hart.

Plus: Sehr nettes und bemühtes Personal, Riesen Pool , große Zimmer ( hatten Familienappartement), Küche
Negativ: altes Mobiliar, veraltetere Duschen mit klappfalttüren in denen man sich fast nicht umdrehen kann, hellhörig. Frühstück jeden Tag gleich
Insgesamt ok, wenn man es günstig bekommt, .für uns Last Minute gebucht ,im Griechenland zu teuer .
Die tollen Bewertungen sind gerechtfertigt, wenn man das Hotel zu sehr günstigen Konditionen buchen kann.

Trevligt hotel som passar familjer och par

Hotellet var trevligt även om det inte var det modernaste. Personalen var väldigt trevlig och hjälpsam. Speciellt flickan Sofie i receptionen. Vi kände oss välkomna och trivdes bra. Rummet var rent men kanske lite litet. Vi är familj med två barn, så fick två sovrum och två balkonger i lägenheten, väldigt bra! Det ända minuset var att så gen var hård. Annars var allt bra. Frukosten var också bra. Poolen var härlig och stor! Våra barn simmade hela tiden!

Heel fijn, klein hotel met ontzettende servicegerichte medewerkers. Deze mensen weten goed om te gaan met de balans tussen het eigen worden met de gasten en het professioneel blijven. Top vakantie gehad!

Loved the breakfast buffet and the swimmingpool. Stayed in a family appartment with 2 bedrooms not 3 separat rooms as mentioned on the site. Rooms are clean and could use an modern upgrade

prima hotel, nabij het strand, old town en centrum

het hotel is prima, de kamers gedateerd. vooral de (matrassenzijn hard, de douche is ook aan een opknapbeurt toe.
ook zou het fijn zijn als er verduisterings gordijnen zouden zijn.
voor de rest geweldig vriendelijk en behulpzaam personeel.
met name bij de receptie en de housekeeping waren ontzettend vriendelijk!
Je kon bij wijze van spreken van de grond eten!!
het ontbijt zou iets meer variatie mogen hebben, want was iedere dag hetzelfde

Nice little hotel

We stayed for a week and had room 310, on second floor . The room had a small balcony with chairs/table and drying rack. The room overlooked the street but was very quiet and pleasant. In the kitchen, which was well furnished, we had no proper cutting knife and no cereal bowls but made do. You have to buy your kitchen paper and washing up liquid which are not supplied. You get two bottles of water every day.
Bathroom amenities are scarce: two small tubs of shower gel for the whole stay and one tiny soap. But towels are all changed on daily basis and room was super clean.
Air conditioning was good, although we couldn't figure how to regulate it!
Wifi was poor from the room but good from lobby or garden/pool.
Breakfast was good and fresh, served by the huge pool, in pleasant garden.
